Deven Green i have the same year/car and am looking to get in the 600whp club i was looking at the speedtech kit but also the bigboost kit. How are you liking the speedtech kit and how much did it cost in total to be 600whp
Bro you should at least upgrade your intercooler and charge pipes. Not sure about the down pipe as no one has really proven the stock one to be an issue with higher pressure, but might as well play it say with a high flow DP.
Was just cruising with either an m235i or an m240i and gotta say one of the best sounding cars ever. 😍 and looks amazing too. Definitely would be on my list if I were to get a nicer car later in life
It really comes down to whether you want to feel a bit more power, or you want to go warp 7! Just depends on the person! Neither is wrong! Personally, I'm not Interested in going 175mph, but tapping into the potential of my car is fun! I'll leave the Space Shuttle on the launch pad! Lol
I am an owner of M235i🫶, had some oil leak problems( typically BMW) , from what i heard the M240i B58 has no more oil leak and is a bit better at almost everything than N55, but N55 has the better sound , and for me that's important as well, if you want you can easily get 400-500 HP for each motor. So both are great choices❤
Its a no brainer - the M235i was discontinued in 2017 and was replaced by the M240i - better engine - better performance - if you cant afford an M240i then get an M235i
2017 M240 with Noelle Tune which keeps the warranty - 440 hp: absolutely kills it at the track (Chuckwalla, Streets of Willow, Button Willow). Amazing handling with solid brakes make it a complete joy to drive. Quite a sleeper and worth every penny.
Manny M did you get the m235i ? I’m confused between the two , I was about to get the m240i but then I liked the sound of the 235i , which one do you recommend is there a massive difference in power ?
Thanks for your vids man. I have been researching cars for about a year now. I was convinced I wanted a new VW golf or perhaps an audi a4 or s3. I've owned Honda products over the past 18 years. 2 Integra's GSRs. Civic Si. RSX-S (wrecked). ILX. I meticulously maintain my cars and love to drive. Everyone told me to look into BMW. I thought "they're nice but overpriced". I saw a blue m240i last summer and was locked in. Your videos along with a handful of others have been helping me maintain my sanity that this is the perfect car and my search needed to get deeper. I looked around new/used for months. I'm in KC. Finding one on a dealership's lot was tedious. They had a ton of 230is. I knew I needed that v6 coming from a long line of underpowered 4 cyclinder cars. The prices were crazy too. We're talking close to 50k for a fully loaded 230i xdrive. 230 not 235i or 240. KC dealers simply know that they can sell the few cars they stock to the Kansas city elite over the course of the year. Snooty dealers that don't inspire love for the brand. They know what's hot in the lineup (M3/M4, 340, 440, m235/240) but they don't have any of those cars even to test drive. I kept looking cross country and found one in Wichita. I feel like a lucky man as I signed a low mileage lease for my new 2019 m240i xdrive - mineral gray. Less than 47k all in. Cannot believe how much superior this car is to what I had before. Maybe the dealer was right? The 230i should be enough power for anyone on the road. This inline 6 however is a demon on the road. I never felt so confident. It's much faster than I thought and seems much faster than 95% of traffic on my commute any given day. You can pass anything at will in this car. There is no such thing as 45mph in this car. You know no one can mess with you in the car as you can just blow by them and watch them vanish in the ether. I'm almost hesitant to drive in sports plus mode as the demon is unleashed further and seems to demand twice the gas. My stomach got quesy the first few times I floored it to "see of UA-cam was right about the acceleration" (yes you guys were). It's hard to explain the joy of driving a car this fast to others that haven't experienced it. The tech is fantastic as well. The digital readout on the display is badass as well. I'm looking for excuses to take it out and rev it up. I'm wanting my friends and family to drive it to let me know it's not an illusion that it's lighting fast. I'm 6 days in to ownership and have my first mod. I did puddle lights that display "M" on the ground when the door opens. Actually pretty stock looking. My only wish is that I could hear the engine more. I'm just starting to look into that but I'm still a novice with car repair etc. Looking forward to watching you mod that gorgeous blue 235!
If you haven't already got it wack the M-Sport Exhaust on, then just drive everywhere with the window slightly open, the barble and pops are awesome.... That's what I do, you'll never get bored until the winter when you have to drive with the windows shut. Lol
I've got an M140i. If I were to modify it, the first thing would be an LSD, otherwise you're just going to spin any extra power away in rubber and smoke and then end up in a ditch. I absolutely love it though, proper hooligan car when you want it to be, then a sensible family hatchback with a decent boot (trunk for my American cousins) and fold down rear seats when you want to be sensible and go food (grocery) shopping.
The biggest advantage is the close deck design. Look up the Supra videos explaining it and you'll see why the B58 is better. I has more potential once the after market pays more attention when the supra is released. BMW knows that with the supra having this engine, aftermarket is gonna pickup for these engines, and thus increase its popularity in the street world. Also, they didn't give the Supra as much power in stock form to keep insurance prices down, we all know the potential this engine has.
2016 M235I with intercooler, chargepipe, 3.5 bar map sensors upgrade both, downpipe, tune and cut stock intake box wider or aftermarket intake and you will have a heck of a car. Most may disagree bit the 3.5 bar map sensors made a huge difference even without an upgraded turbo.
Most Supra enthusiasts are taking a big dump on the incoming model. They are going to be blown away when the reality of the B58 slaps them in the face...
@@Jashue id say let the current companies tune/mod the mk5 and people will start looking stupid once they found out at the last minute it's a good engine.
As someone who owns an M240i, after comparing both, the M240i drives better, and is faster. It is a lot smoother and I think the exhaust note is better. Also a 0-60 of 4.1 seconds of the m240i challenging the M2
apparently when you throw a catless dp on the m235 you can really hear the turbo. i could not find a m240 that sounds the same with a catless dp. whats your experience?
Yea, the 235i is such a good choice dude, congratz! and with the 2 series in general, you really aren't going to need more than 400-450 max, anymore and you sacrifice the drivability of the car and the balance as well
@@lamakicker69 I don’t think so. The only difference in my eyes is reliability and makeup of the engine. The b58 does make power abit easier though like you said and quicker from the factory but both can be tuned to how you want it fairly easy
@@garrenfitzgerald5060 well what you think is wrong. N55 makes about 380-400whp on a Stage 2+ OTS tune. Those tunes also require upgraded downpipe, chargepipe, and intercooler. B58 on a stage 2+ OTS tune makes 500+whp with a downpipe and HPFP needed. The N55 is a great engine but the B58 absolutely destroys it and it’s not even close. Makes far more power, with less mods, and is more reliable.
@@lamakicker69 you can run a tune on the n55 ewg you don’t have to have those mods. There a smart choice and efficient but not a must have if you just want a tune. And my buddy has a m340i with just a tune and dp and he hit 445whp. , my n55 with just e85, hpfp and a charge pipe dyno’d 419/440rwt on a mustang dyno.
@@garrenfitzgerald5060 obviously you can run a stage 1 tune with no mods…but if you want higher tunes you need those mods(unless you want to risk damaging your engine). Your car required more mods and e85 and was still 30whp less lol and that’s with a bad tune on your friends car. Stage 2 (just a downpipe) on the M340i should be 480-500whp…with some e85 it’s 520+whp. Your friend has a shitty tune. It is an undisputed FACT that the B58 is more reliable, it makes more power stock, and it makes far more power when tuned. The N55 is a great engine, but the B58 is far better. Go ask literally any BMW tuner or BMW forum/subreddit and every single person will tell you the B58 blows the N55 out of the water.
For the more typical non-turbo bolt-ons on 93 octane or lower, both the N55 and B58 have fueling issues once you get into the 400whp range. Basically a tune and downpipe will put you in that realm. The B58 makes and sustains a bit more power from 6300 to 7000rpms which gives it better top end legs and the air to liquid intercooling is more efficient. In sub 120mph racing and similar mods, the cars will generate similar acceleration numbers. The B58 has a ton more complexity, lots more cooling components, and a rear mounted timing chain so longterm maintenance costs could be high.
Although the B58 does seem a lot more complex than the N55, I do think it’ll still be really reliable, since Toyota did help BMW with the development of it during the Supra.
Believe it or not! The M235i fits you better than the 335i. After checking out the videos, you definitely hooked yourself up good! "Simply just a car thang" boyeee!
all your videos are good, very good comments. I bought my first BMW 335i sport line N55 engine for my son and I had no problem (one year ago). In November I bought an M235i for myself and so far I have not had any problems.
I’ve been watching you for awhile but havent for the past 2 months. I just bought my 2015 m235i on december 22nd. That saying is really true, once you buy a car, you start seeing it around alot more hahahah
Few years have passed. I think B58's improved cooling has kinda proven to be effective and an efficient engine, alone with the ZF8 autobox (dct is also just fine). Currently own a 128 stick, about to sell it cuz family is growing. But I'm definitely coming back for a M240 in a few years. 1/2 series are such a fun car to drive and easy own. Great review as always~
Nice video mate...really enjoyed it. haven't been on your channel for a long time But I have to say I will probably be back again soon. You seem more comfortable in your own skin now as compared with some of the early stuff you did when you had the 335i. As for your choice of car, I really like how you're thinking. These are some of cars that are helping BMW maintain it's mojo IMO. Smaller, lighter cars designed for driving orientated enthusiasts while retaining decent practicality...that magic formula that BMW have done so well in the past. That's not to say that the bigger brutes aren't awesome machines (by all accounts they are pretty amazing) but I'm really glad that BMW didn't just abandon this segment of the market. The M legends (E46 M3 for example) are getting pretty long in the tooth now and it's getting harder to find one (here where I live anyway...I've been looking) without buying a beaten up one that will become a project car. Hard to get much more performance out of them too without some serious mods. So, it seems to me that the current performance 2 series cars, obviously the M2 but also the 235i and 240i are worthy successors to spot in the used car market that has been occupied by the older M3 cars. Smaller and lighter. It's so often a recipe for fun.
@@germanengineering204 speed.academy/the-2020-gr-supra-is-a-lot-more-toyota-than-you-think/ Last paragraph of first page. That’s one of the sources I could find quick. In essence, Toyota has done a lot of testing of this B58 motor to make sure it lived up to Toyota reliability standards and some things were changed
Great review! I own a 2017 M240ixDrive, and absolutely adore this car. The only issue I have had is that during warmer weather on longer drives, the engine does eat a bit of coolant and I have had to re-fill the coolant. Had dealer check this out and they found no issues. Other than that, this car just absolutely exceeds the value of the sum of its parts.
Joe Blow thank you! I totally believe it, my brief experience of driving an M240i was fantastic and i loved it. I’m curious about the coolant consumption ive read about that on the forums as well
I got the M235i as my first ever car. When I was choosing a car to buy, I narrowed it down to two M240i's and an M235i. The only real reason I went with the one I did was the colour and that it had an auto transmission (I wanted to try an auto and it's a tiny bit faster). One of the M240i's and the M235i were about the same price with the former being slightly more due to it being a bit newer and had lower mileage. I don't think it honestly makes much difference which you buy. They seem very very similar even if their engines are different (albeit same spec).
My understanding was the m240i was the m235i successor. Yet they're now making a 2021 m235i grand coupe but the m240i is not made in the grand coupe? Is that correct? So Is the m235 grand coupe using the M240s B58 engine?
Interesting video. I'm trying to decide between the two at the moment, I sway towards the 235i manual 6 speed at the moment, I feel in 20 years time it will be/still be one of the great affordable "everyman" coupes of the petrol era. One to care for and run long after they stop producing fossil fuel cars full stop
Yea i think it's going to be a great bargain buy as these cars age. They're so much fun to drive and have a ton of creature comforts and practicality with them as well.
Great question. Based on research and test study the M240i would be more reliable. The engine is very similar to the B58 used in the Toyota Supra and Toyota tested the engine against their standards and it passed so that alone would sway me to the M240i. The M4 is larger and has more expensive components all together so the price to own would be more but it is not a nightmare to own like some older BMW M cars with V8/V10 engines. Hope this helps some!
For what a BMW M235i goes for in today's market, what made you buy one over a 340i? I have found that the 340i is a bit cheaper with the same miles as an M235i.
1:01 I live in Wales :) It;s been 2 weeks of rain non stop now ... roads are ok for driving but speed cameras are not uncommon (mobile and fixed) and sometimes bad road surface between smaller villages). We can get these cars in UK 2015 plate /50k miles for 15k GBP (20k USD) so I think that's very similar. For your price we can buy 2016/2017 plat 25k miles full loaded. Only 69 for sale on Autotrader today.
m235i all day. The 240 is just as dope but you may as well get the Supra, atleast I would. for the price you get the same engine in a more iconic car for cheaper with the same if not more potential.
Cannot find a used manual transmission M235 or M240. I sold my 2016 M235 because I ordered it with auto, instead of manual. Very disappointed. All my M3's and 328i's of the past are manual. Will order a 2021 through Costco Auto Program. The best value is buying it stock and enjoy it without taking it to an "illegal" chop shop and butcher it. First, you already lose value the moment you drive off the lot. Then you spend hundreds or even thousands more for something you will never use on a regular basis. Then something will break every few months. Very sad to see a nice BMW/Porsche that are heavily modified.
Greetings from England!! Love your videos, was just wondering why the US didn't get the M135i or the M140i. I've owned my 140 for 15 months now and it's an amazing hyper hatch, fast and definitely a driver's car, with the power all going to the rear wheels making it really twitchy in the wet. Just about to get my first proper mod done, the Remus back axle exhaust, which I will follow with an improved air intake system. By the way, the 140 also has the B58 and its amazing lump, as you've noticed, no noticeable torque delay and now a tuner's dream!!!

jim carson I think the car was a lukewarm attempt to build a hot hatch which BMW wasn’t really in the market for. It wasn’t until 2012 when they built their first proper hot hatch, the M135i, that they started to compete in this sector followed by the M140i, which I own, then the new M135i which became a 4 cylinder FWD, a backward step in my opinion
@@Noname-od5zy I got the M240i! Love it. My only complaint is the roads in Minnesota are often in bad shape and the stock suspension can bounce you around like a pogo-stick. :-) Still, love the car.
What do you think about RWD vs XDrive? I had a M235 (no LSD) from 2014-2017 and was constantly frustrated with keeping the back wheels down. I have a Giulia AWD and love it but I miss the 2er. Will a 240 with an LSD solve those sideways problems or is XDrive the way to go with all that power?
Curious to your thoughts 1yr later now that there are some more used M240i on the market. I'm seeing quite a lot of the M240i sale for maybe $5k more for same miles.

How's the gas mileage/performance? I'm thinking about trading in my 2017 gt mustang to get this car.I'm worried about maintaining a BMW. Did you get a warranty on the car?
trayonelove If you take care of the car it will take care of you. Honestly we’ve had BMWs in the family for a long time and it’s never been this huge burden that everyone says it is. BUT, you have to take care of it. Know your way around the car. Get to know it. Once you do, youll know when something doesnt sound right or doesnt feel right and get to fixing the issue before it becomes an expensive issue. As far as performance, you will not be disappointed. Go test drive a few. Every car requires maintenance, but some cars you can put if off for longer before it becomes an issue. (And yes if you regularly change your oil at the dealer it will cost you, with any car. Dealers rip you off. Personal opinion I guess)

No thanks, m240i ftw. That m2 needs a track to enjoy. You've got almost the same power as an m2 (more torque). Much more comfy ride in comparison as a daily. 240 has better fuel economy. Better insurance rates etc. What do you plan to do with it? It's too much for normal roads imho. Might as well get an cpo M3/ M4 at that price. The m240i can't even use those horses on normal roads less the M2. You tap the gas and you're at 60 before you know it. M2s have to purposefully be driven slower else you're always itching to hit the gas and take it past 80. Not fun for me in the 240i either. It begs to be driven hard. Only imagine the m2 is worse.
I had both. I wish that BMW had continued to offer a "base" M2 in 2019 and later. I loved the Comps power and bodywork, but the suspension was too firm and it had a track alignment that required too much steering adjustment just driving down the freeway

Was just cruising with either an m235i or an m240i and gotta say one of the best sounding cars ever. 😍 and looks amazing too. Definitely would be on my list if I were to get a nicer car later in life
I think it was M235i(N55), it has a better sound, but the M240i(B58) is a bit better overall.
It really comes down to whether you want to feel a bit more power, or you want to go warp 7! Just depends on the person! Neither is wrong! Personally, I'm not Interested in going 175mph, but tapping into the potential of my car is fun! I'll leave the Space Shuttle on the launch pad! Lol
couldn't agree more!
What’s warp 7?
I am an owner of M235i🫶, had some oil leak problems( typically BMW) , from what i heard the M240i B58 has no more oil leak and is a bit better at almost everything than N55, but N55 has the better sound , and for me that's important as well, if you want you can easily get 400-500 HP for each motor. So both are great choices❤
Its a no brainer - the M235i was discontinued in 2017 and was replaced by the M240i - better engine - better performance - if you cant afford an M240i then get an M235i

I live in the Welsh countryside. Surprised the US have heard of Wales! Good video btw
Interesting to see how the B58 gets built up by supra owners looking to crack crazy performance out of it
yea we'll see its potential being pushed to the limits pretty soon
Most Supra enthusiasts are taking a big dump on the incoming model. They are going to be blown away when the reality of the B58 slaps them in the face...
@@Jashue id say let the current companies tune/mod the mk5 and people will start looking stupid once they found out at the last minute it's a good engine.
As someone who owns an M240i, after comparing both, the M240i drives better, and is faster. It is a lot smoother and I think the exhaust note is better. Also a 0-60 of 4.1 seconds of the m240i challenging the M2
Yea I definitely agree, it's an amazing car
4.1 with Xdrive, not RWD
apparently when you throw a catless dp on the m235 you can really hear the turbo. i could not find a m240 that sounds the same with a catless dp. whats your experience?
Yea, the 235i is such a good choice dude, congratz! and with the 2 series in general, you really aren't going to need more than 400-450 max, anymore and you sacrifice the drivability of the car and the balance as well
But you can make 400-450 with the B58 much easier. The B58 blows the N55 out of the water.
Although the B58 does seem a lot more complex than the N55, I do think it’ll still be really reliable, since Toyota did help BMW with the development of it during the Supra.
why the hell did they decide to stick the timing belt on the back??
@@mcintosh.motors its supposed to last the lifetime of the car

The only issue I have had is that during warmer weather on longer drives, the engine does eat a bit of coolant and I have had to re-fill the coolant. Had dealer check this out and they found no issues. Other than that, this car just absolutely exceeds the value of the sum of its parts.

First ever car? How old are you dude? Or were you into bikes or something before?
That blue paint is so nice bro!

My understanding was the m240i was the m235i successor. Yet they're now making a 2021 m235i grand coupe but the m240i is not made in the grand coupe? Is that correct? So Is the m235 grand coupe using the M240s B58 engine?

Okay but how would a M4 reliability compare to the M240i ?
Great question. Based on research and test study the M240i would be more reliable. The engine is very similar to the B58 used in the Toyota Supra and Toyota tested the engine against their standards and it passed so that alone would sway me to the M240i. The M4 is larger and has more expensive components all together so the price to own would be more but it is not a nightmare to own like some older BMW M cars with V8/V10 engines. Hope this helps some!
For what a BMW M235i goes for in today's market, what made you buy one over a 340i? I have found that the 340i is a bit cheaper with the same miles as an M235i.

m235i all day.
B58 is just better built and less things to worry about with the air to water intercooler

samuel, i heard the engineering was done in germany but toyota would bring parts to its factory for stress testing. and the "s"58 is coming to the m2 soon. first, it will make its debut in the m3 with 505 hp.
bob starr The S58 already made its debut, with the X3/X4 M.
Is there anyway you can change your videos. Can you change to pov?
fuck bro I'm out here shopping but insurance is fucken insane
yea it is man
B58 is A KIND
What is your opinion on a fully loaded 228i?
Both are direct injection right? .. how’s the carbon build up??
The only problem I have is that neither is a "real" ///M car.
Get back a 335i
f30 335i n55 400nm torque? I thought the n55 is 450nm standard
Hey! just a quick question. Found a guy selling his 335xi for a fairly low price with a leaking head gasket. It’s at 75k miles and also has a bad alternator. Should i buy it and have it repaired or just pass?
Buy it, make friends with someone at a shop and do the install yourself
Yogi B you think it’s a good idea ?
@@peterodogwu8497 generally, OEM BMW parts can be found for cheap/decent prices if you look hard enough. If you aren't up for the labor or don't have the resources/ tools, then pay an indy mechanic. If you want it, go for it. Just don't take your car to the stealership lol .
@@peterodogwu8497 I blew my front diff on my xi and the dealership wanted $3,000 for a new one not including labor. I picked up a used diff with low miles for around $280 and had my mechanic install for around $3-400 . If you have a buddy and proper tools, you can definitely save the labor cost.
Yogi B thanks man ! I’ll look into it. Atleast someone replied.
Recently bought a n55 car and i have many friends with the same powerplant. Its wonderfully reliable. There is a few common issues to take care of but the motor itself is very solid. Would be a good trade imo
I have a 400whp 2014 335i with basically the same power-plant, it has almost 100k miles with no issues. It gets about 25mpg average and 30+ on the hwy i am very happy with it
love it, gas mileage is fantastic so far averaging around 23.5mpg with normal/mildly aggressive driving. reliability so far has been wonderful. i didnt purchase a warranty
Realistically you're not going to see much of a difference in performance between the M235 and M240 unless you mod it a lot. The N55 is probably more reliable.
Yea that’s a great point. However, The B58 is revealing itself to be a very stout platform to make some good power if that’s your thing
M2 ;-) i have one , i love M235i or M240i alsow nice cars al the 2 ! i have 370hp and overboost 500NM
ahh precovid pricing before insane inflation
N55 FTW🤪
N55
I wanna ruin one of these 🌚
What year is this car?
Which backroad is that?
Bm3 is coming out very soon for the B58!!!
ive noticed when trying to max speed on stock m235i that even on flat road traction control always kicks in and nearly makes me crash.
maybe the wind?? idk but whenever i try to max speed now i always take traction control off
get better tires maybe, when doing high speeds like that tires really show their potential
I traded my M235i for an M240 and a hand full of cash. I couldn't be happier with both cars. The paint work on the M235i was a bit thin so I made sure to ceramic coat my M240i and put ppf on the bumper.
Which one drives better ? And which one sounds better ? I’m so indecisive right now I need help Iv short listed 2 cars but I felt the 235i sounds more aggressive ?
@@Noname-od5zy pros for the 235i. Sounds better and had slightly more at the top end. Pros for the m240i engine is even smoother, more power and torque through the low and mid range. Less turbo lag in comfort. Better fuel economy. Closed block design is stronger so better for turning up the boost. You will be delighted with iether. Put an msport exhaust on the m240 and out sounds good especaily in sports.
ChipZilla69 thanks you How much would one of those msport exhausts go for ?
I had a 435d x drive convertible but it got abit boring need something more nippy
ChipZilla69 also do them exhausts have an impact on fuel consumption?
@@Noname-od5zy used msport exhaust is around £350 and new is £650. Fitting is extra. Fuel economy not impacted by exhaust. M235i and m240i are the same car so drive the same. M240 has a face lift and the new b58 engine as opposed to the n55 in the older model.
I’ve got the M240i on a 24month lease for £489.99/month with 0 deposit and 10k miles.... good deal?
What's the most hp you can get from an M235i without third-party/after market parts? I'm considering buying one used but all of this is new for me and I want to play it safe until I learn more
320hp & 332lb/tq is the most you'll get without any sort of bolt on upgrade or software flash. its plenty of power to have fun with
@@SimplyCarThings Thanks man! Really appreciate your reply. What's a safe limit for hp improvement with a software flash? Businesses in my city claim that they can get up to 80hp with a stage 2, but I don't know if that could be real and/or damage the engine
@ honestly you can squeeze an extra 150+whp with the right setup. just stay on top of your maintenance and take care of the car. These engines/gearboxes are built to handle a lot of power!
NEITHER.... GET THE M2 COMPETITION... YOU'RE WELCOME.
Add price into it....
Shout out to the Welsh countryside ☝️
👌🏼👌🏼
You didn’t drive the 240, how can you compare it ?
its the same car. different engine, but mechanically nearly identical.
Nando completely different engine mate, try it
@@ianmitchell9102 yeah that's what I said. But besides the engine its mechanically the same car pretty much.
Nando but it’s a 2 car comparison, so if the 2nd car is almost the same whys there a comparison in the first place ?
I’ve owned both and yes they are similar but completely different driving characteristics
