I understand the need to move to a modern building, but the famous novel "In this House of Brede," was written with Stanbrook Abbey as the fictional Abbey, so I think it's a shame that the former Abbey, where hundreds of women lived their entire lives cloistered, has been turned into a wedding venue. However I wish these wonderful nuns nothing but the best. I hope many women will enter this monastery.Thank you, dear cloistered Benedictine Nuns!
I am a monk in a religious order and I would love to live here! There is something very spiritually uplifting about the clean lines, the minimalism, no distractions to inner contemplation. Also, it's accessible to all of the older members. Please think of that before you begin criticizing.

It does not matter what kind of building they live in, as long as they continue to keep their Benedictine traditions and its life styles. As long they are happy to live it for God. That's what it count.
Sadly the old Stanbrook has now become a Hotel and they are registered to hold Civil Ceremonies. The Lady Elizabeth Sumner (Lady Abbess) who I met on a few occasions when I stayed with the Chaplain would be turning in her grave

Okay so they have a new modern looking Monastery that looks like some apartment complex. Some old traditional religious architecture could have easily been implemented along with the more modern. The look and feel of this altogether white-washed apartment complex looking monastery leaves these nuns who are still wearing the traditional garb look so out of place and awkward. Architecture can be an art form that inspires and communicates profound religious feeling. I just feel that they could have Incorporated some aspects of the traditional religious architecture. Now all we have here is just a bunch of nuns in traditional habits living in some kind of modern apartment complex.

I bet it had been built by Pugin, it looks like Saint Augustine's Abbey in Ramsgate, Kent; this abbey too has been left by the Benedictine monks because it had become too expensive to keep, but then the National Trust took over and mantained it through the heritage fund; now it's the National Shrine of Saint Augustine's in England and Vincentian Fathers live there and opened a retreat centre there

No, they do various things to make an income. I don’t know if they still have it but they used to run a printing press. And they don’t retire. This is a commitment for life which lasts until death.
It's more like the religious community takes care of each other. When a nun is too elderly or ill to contribute much physically, then she would be taken care of by the rest of the sisters, in whichever way they support themselves.
I cant believe they sold their old monastery, and built something so ugly! To contemplate God, you need somewhere beautiful, like their old convent. why on earth did they move? I bet they dont get many new vocations there.....
The new abbey at Wass reflects so beautifully the spirituality and charism of this incredible order of nuns. It has a plain simplicity on the exterior, but the interior is so well-made, incredibly functional, long lasting and looks out upon God's wonderful creation of the North York Moors. What concerns the religious is not the external appearance, but rather the internal reality, and they have certainly created a really good place of prayer that they as a community can live, work and pray in. I'm really impressed with how committed they are to good stewardship of resources, both financial and ecological!
Ah, so well said at 4.10. These women did not enter the monastery so to have their vocation taken over by the maintenance demands of an ageing building. They entered such a life for their love of God. Now they are in a building which frees them for their actual vocation.
The maintenance was actually probably good for them. Work is good for the soul. Order and routine and hard work produces spiritual benefits. Bet they get older faster in the new building.

Are these women Roman Catholic or C of E? I'm always dubious of this kind of thing. The old location was beautiful and spoke to the worship of God. The new place looks hideous. The environmentalist movement is full of pagans and is steeped in earth worship. If the old place was too expensive, fine. But if we're trying to be good environmentalist here than I've got a problem with it.
I personally prefer , Roman , Gothic & Italianaid architecture. Of course an individual can serve God without that. I admire St. Theresa of Avila , religious statues meant a great deal to deepen her spiritual life , I guess what Im honestly saying is the religious look really deepens my spirituality and others . Glad this works for these beautiful nuns, I think it STINKS 😇

I'm a nun. Pretty sure they don't wear their habits to sleep in. You get used to a veil after a few weeks and you normally have a thicker habit for winter and thinner for summer. The sleeves can be a bit impractical though!
Thanks for responding sister, I have some music on You Tube that many nuns and monks seem to like (my mother is always giving out my CDs at retreats etc.) You might want to listen to a couple, I compose them to give people peace and joy as I'm sure you give much of to the world. I think it is a luxury hotel now, sadly. I was blessed to stay there for 5 days when I visited England.
Being ecologically sensitive totally makes sense. The selfless practicality of these sisters is mesmerizing!
