For a while, the residents of Manitoba Colony thought demons were raping the town's women. There was no other explanation. No way of explaining how a woman could wake up with blood and semen stains smeared across her sheets and no memory of the previous night. No way of explaining how another went to sleep clothed, only to wake up naked and covered by dirty fingerprints all over her body. No way to understand how another could dream of a man forcing himself onto her in a field-and then wake up the next morning with grass in her hair.
For Sara Guenter, the mystery was the rope. She would sometimes wake up in her bed with small pieces of it tied tightly to her wrists or ankles, the skin beneath an aching blue. Earlier this year, I visited Sara at her home, simple concrete painted to look like brick, in Manitoba Colony, Bolivia. Mennonites are similar to the Amish in their rejection of modernity and technology, and Manitoba Colony, like all ultraconservative Mennonite communities, is a collective attempt to retreat as far as possible from the nonbelieving world. A slight breeze of soy and sorghum came off the nearby fields as Sara told me how, in addition to the eerie rope, on those mornings after she'd been raped she would also wake to stained sheets, thunderous headaches, and paralyzing lethargy.

It is strange how they feel obliged to forgive a rapist but not forgive someone who uses a mobile phone.

Nah you got it all wrong they are all given a chance for what ever the case may be rapist, who gets a phone, bike etc etc they are only punished only when they don't repent keep up the things they bought or owned and again the only punishment is banishing and excommunicate them from the community they don't practice like some religious communities practice like the Muslims stoning to death, honour killing, execution etc etc for leaving the religion .......

I know you're trying to be funny. But first off, they don't condemn those who use mobile phones or any technology; they simply refuse to use them. Second, the imperative to forgive those who seek forgiveness and are worthy of forgiveness is a Christian imperative and virtue that they take seriously. Third, as members of a community living by these religious virtues, the command to forgive while making perpetrators accountable for their actions is largely what holds this community together. What's strange to you is that this community-centered approach to crime built upon mercy and forgiveness is not one most Americans can understand. We offload justice for criminal offenses to the state and reject mercy, forgiveness, and rehabilitation for most people convicted of crimes.

@@TheMOlague I don't know why you think they were trying to be funny. It was a sincere remark on the irony of this bizarre approach to morality. Going softer on rape than on the possession of a phone makes no sense. This is what happens in intensely patriarchal communities.

I am a Mennonite from Manitoba,Canada. I have heard personal stories of these ghost rapes from my own family members living in Bolivia. It’s utmost more so the ridiculous laws mandatory made by the elders-that the incest and ghost rapes are happening and will continue. It’s not happening to the the men and as evidence l have witnessed myself;the young girls and women have almost no credibility or even acknowledged as anywhere close to being equal to men. It’s the elders of their churches that can make a huge difference-but change, even for the better, means sin. Being molested from a child and no one to turn to-l cannot imagine what they must be suffering. My grandmother who lived to age 92 told me horror stories like these from her childhood in Mexico to moving to Bolivia. She told me a story about a family where the husband took care of birth control. When his wife could no longer conceal her pregnancy,he took her to the woods where she wouldn’t be heard and he would tie her down-and using his hands he tore the unborn child out of her. He did this many times and even bragged he decided when they’d have another child. That’s the mildest story of what she’s told me. It’s all about looking like purity in religion not true to being saved Christians. Whether you wear your hair in braids or not seems to matter more than the great sin of incest and rapes!! SHAME on the men as so called leaders who are desperate for things to remain as the way it’s always been before. Selfish as they do not consider the suffering and threat to the little girls with little to no protection even from their own fathers-often the culprits themselves. It won’t change until this darkness is brought to the light.

Rape is not justified, it's not something you can get over, it is a crime worth locking men up for life. death penalty in my opinion! and it is utterly unforgivable, bible or no bible, i'm saying that as a catholic.

The idea to stay as traditional as possible has some fallacies. They claim to stay true to their roots, by comparing themselves to the people that lived centuries ago. People that followed the same way of life. They won't embrace the the latter advances of the 20th, as well as the 21th century. I find it plain stupid to compare yourselves to people in the past who in-fact did adopt the modernity of their time. I am pretty sure they all embraced whatever made life easier for them. So why not buy a car or have modern forms of law and legislature. For the sake of their beliefs, even the Babylonians seem more advanced than they are

@@Seetha-Golden Hi, yes. I saw the movie yesterday and read the book earlier this week. After the movie everyone in the theater just sat still in silence, it was very unusual. I think the movie was very well directed. I read the screenplay last week and it was clear watching the film and noting differences how collaborative and flexible the process must have been. I think my criticisms of Women Talking are more of the book because the movie was mostly an offshoot of that. Although the book (with a prologue) at least acknowledges the real people who suffered and continue to suffer from rape and incest, I am troubled by how both fictions imply a false impression of a semblance of resolution where there is none. I'll grant that at least there is TALK and that is something, especially with such awful trauma. I liked that the book & film included some victims also using the spray out of both fear and the need to control others by making them unconscious, showing how easily the ability to control others corrupts.

And there were eight of them! That's what? About 12 rapes per man on average! Add that to the fact that each of these psychos probably took turns on each victim and you have enough rape sentences to last 2,500 years!

Can someone tell me what "verse" they are referencing? I've never heard such a thing in fact I've seen the opposite ------ 1 Peter 3:3-4 - Whose adorning let it not be that outward [adorning] of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel ------- This is all I could find on the matter.

the entire purpose of their ideology seems to be living a simple and unmaterialistic life. having an 18 wheeler might be a material desire to someone, but i'm sure for them its all a matter of practicality. they even use windmills to power their homes... its not like they're completely against modern technology, but against "frivolous" things that i can only imagine would include things like television. im sure tools and other useful technologies such as trucks wouldn't be so bad.

I didn't know there was such a big mennonite community in Bolivia, I knew about Mexico cuz I'm from there. I always thought that these people lived in peace and calm because they weren't been absorbed by the 21 century society, politics and all the bunch of problems we live in currently but I guess there will always be a form of evil in any mankind such as the incest and raping within the own members of their family which is sad. Trying to live a pretty basic life without technology and material things is gonna be pretty hard if not impossible also.. I think they should establish a form of judicial branch so they can punish the crimes and also let the young guys and girls use technology because technology is part of our life's now!!! Just soften a little be more their society but not so much that it becomes evil and corrupt as ours!!! And don't keep children from getting an education because that's a right every kid on this world has!!!

I’m sure we can all agree of the benefits of modern technologies but we can also agree on the negative affects. This documentary shines a dark light on some dark folks doing sinful things that happen in every group of people... Harvey Weinstein comes to mind.

First, what they speak in this video isn't German, it sounds Germanic but it is not traditional German (in my opinion sounds more like Dutch to be honest...). Second the German for Dutch is Holländer and not Deutsch. Deutsch only means German.

This is bad but I think it's unfair for people to say that all people who believe in God or who are spiritual are idiots. The true expression of Christianity is actually not a religion (a list of rules) but freedom from rules because of God's love for you. When people follow rules they are expressing religion, but faith is something different, and I think the distinction needs to be made.

Just something on the braided hair thing and the bible.
    1 Timothy 2:8-15 ESV
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness-with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
