With so many iconic dance sequences competing for a spot on the list, I'm not surprised that one of my favorites was missing. I went to college in Utah. The drive in where I saw Footloose was ACROSS THE STREET from the Lehi Roller Mills building where the dances were filmed. And the drive in where the teens met was Hi-Spot but it's now a florist.

Fun fact: Jumpin' Jive was shot in one take and without rehearsal. The Nicholas brothers were the greatest dancers of all time, and even Fred Astaire said so.
That is not true at all, that it was done "without rehearsal". The Nicholas brothers may very well have been the greatest dancers of all time, but even for them there is a 0% chance that they could have done that dance without rehearsing it. And they never claimed they did. What they said was they didn't rehearse the jump splits on the stairs because those were too dangerous to do over and over again. Other people said they didn't rehearse the dance at all. The Nicholas brothers didn't say that. And me saying that is in no way dissing the Nicholas brothers, that dance scene is the greatest dance scene I've ever seen.
If you watch the new Aladdin, w/ Will Smith, look for an homage to the Nicholas brothers at the end of ‘Friend Like Me.’ Of course, Aladdin had to do it with special effects. 😏
Of course it wasn't done in one take, it just isn't possible with film 🎥 because of the shots. Very really is anything filmed in one shot! Or one take! & Yes they rehearsed working out the routine. You have to! Even Donald O'Connor rehearsed & didn't shot his scene in "Singing In The Rain" his "Make Em Laugh!" routine is one of the most difficult and physical routines ever done! So while these guys could do this on stage in one go, you can't on camera! Even on a sound stage. That's what makes them spectacular! Knowing that someone doesn't need to be made to look better, they can do it without the extras! I love them all!!! And special kudos to the Nicholas Brother's!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 But here is a fun fact: if you want to see how damn good all the Black dancers were from that era watch "White Night's" because Geoffrey Hines does a number with most of the dude's who were still around! Pick em all it's brilliant specially if you loved them!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I was super happy to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers included among these iconic movies. I think it's a very underrated movie. Even if you thought the story was silly, there was so much choreography and good writing in there, it's a classic.
So many great, entertaining moments. Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr in the famous "Shall We Dance" ballroom dance scene. Shirley Temple with Mr. Bill Robinson dancing on the stairs in The Little Colonol. Travolta and Uma Thurman doing the Twist in Pulp Fiction to "You Never Can Tell". The large crowd dance in the desert in Jesus Christ Superstar. Can Bye, Bye Birdie w/Ann Margaret get an honorable mention? The "Super Freak" dance in Little Miss Sunshine. I couldn't help but smile all the way through the dance scene to "That's How You Know" in Central Park in the movie Enchanted. The Breakfast Club dance scene when the kids are in detention. The cringe worthy dance of Napolean Dynamite. Too many awesome dances of Anne Miller, Danny Kaye, Donald O'Conner. What about Ester Williams with her underwater dances? Tom Cruise - not in Risky Business, but the comedic dance in Tropic Thunder. So many memorable dance scenes creating fun times. One more - I don't remember the movie, but Christopher Walken dancing through a building - awesome.
All good picks, both yours and the ones in the video. I'll add one that I like called, _Steam Heat_ You can see it by typing in: _The Pajama Game - Steam Heat_ As you watch this you may suspect Michael Jackson may have also seen this same dance sequence and incorporated some of those moves into his stage act.
I’m 60 years old and I remember being 5 or 6 years old standing on my Daddy’s toes as he danced around to Fred Astaire singing, “Cheek to Check”. So, my vote goes to Fred & Ginger! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm in the age group that can recall most musicals, from the Busby Berkeley era of the '30s up to the present day offerings. It would be impossible to name everyone's favourite musical dance scene as tastes change over the years. Every musical ever made brings something to the table. I'll just say, to quote ABBA, "Thank you for the Music."
Busby Berkeley was a very talented musical choreographer but the man was an absolute tyrant. I took several film classes including one on musicals. He was borderline abusive to his dancers and pushed them way past their limit. It was fascinating to learn about him.
One of my all-time favorite movie dance scenes is when the Jets have to be “Cool!” Such spectacular and emotional dancing!! Unbelievable that then-19 year old Eliot “Baby John” Feld was terribly sick during this number and STILL killed it with all the rest!
I came here to say the same thing. Ice getting the gang under control after a traumatic event and the emotional and primal release of energy, added to incredible coreography, can't be beat.
My heart is super happy to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers -- and in the top 10 no less.. This is my favorite musical and this dance scene I watch over and over... Never gets old..
“Whatever Lola Wants” or “Who’s Got the Pain” from “Damn Yankees” needed to be here. Both dance numbers are truly iconic and how can the incomparable Gwen Verdon not be a part of this?
@@victormargraf7180 Loved the way Ginger moved her body-her arms and hands. So graceful and feminine. I don't watch Fred when he and Ginger dance together.
No she didn't. She didn't remotely do everything Fred did, seldom did anything "backwards" (you'd have to have no understanding of dance to think this), and if you pay attention, Astaire's style often had him dancing on tiptoe - Functionally the same as dancing in heels. _And_ she never said that...
This list makes me smile. So many great memories! Another honorable mention: Marilyn Monroe, Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend. The beautiful ballet dancers in the beginning, in their soft long pink tutus and flowers in their hair. The Men lifting her across the floor seamlessly towards the camera. It seems simple, but it’s not. As a former dancer I can attest to this. All the subtleties in the movements and arm placements. Of course the little shimmies that just flow naturally, so they seem so easy. The singing and the iconic outfit she wears, tends to outshine the dance number itself. 💖
I really liked "All that Jazz". The dancing is phenomenal in it. I watched this movie in 1979, I was 18. Then I watched it on the internet about 10 years ago and was just as amazed by it as I was back in 1979. The only difference was, in my early 50's I had a better understanding of what the movie was about. As a teenager, I was just drawn in by the dancing.
Delighted that you added the Tango from Moulin Rouge!! Such an intense and precise dance. I totally agree with the list but then also remembered Diamonds are a Girls's Best Friends.
Absolutely top 20! Also his gym dance in She's Working Her Way Through College that blurs the lines between gymnastics and dance and Lookin' For Someone To Love from So This is Paris. He was the most underrated dancer of all time...and for my money, the absolute best.
Really great list....I’m just a little sad that Cyd Charisse didn’t feature at all....great dancer, her number with Fred in The Band Wagon didn’t even get an honourable mention...oh dear
I can't believe you mentioned 7 Brides for 7 Brothers!!! That was my favorite musical growing up! And I memorized that dance sequence! Well, as much as I could! 🥰
I love that SBfSB hit the 7th spot, nice touch! Deeply underrated classic! I'm surprised not even an honorable mention for Astaire's "Ceiling" dance in "Royal Wedding."
The director of both those films was featured on Directors on PBS. He started out as Gene Kelly’s asst choreographer and did some amazing work. Stanley Donen
I'm 100% on your number one pick. "Singin' In The Rain" is the most purely joyful dance number ever filmed. It's so happy it never fails to make me cry...go figure.
White Christmas is one of my favorite movies. And Mandy is a lot of fun. However, the best dancing in that musical is Choreography. When Vera-Ellen descends to perform her machine-gun tempo taps I become mesmerized. A good list.
I agree - Donald O'Connor's "Make em laugh" is absolutely phenomenal. Its hard to rate things like this against each other, but overall I think you got them all right, but Dirty Dancing should have probably been farther down the list and Eleanor Powell should have been on the list - everyone says Fred and Ginger, but Eleanor was a far superior partner and dancer......and she didnt look at her feet, the way Ginger did.
In the movie “Coming to America “ the dance scene when the African dancers perform before Eddie Murphy’s character meets his possible future queen always blows me away.
The word "flashdance" was invented to describe the Nicholas Brothers. They should be number 1 in any list of dance numbers. And you should see them in Down Argentina Way. Amazing.
Absolutely. Gene Kelly is extremely famous, and a complete schlub compared with the Nicholas Brothers. Gregory Hines reportedly wanted to make a movie based on them, but nobody - nobody - could repeat their moves.
I think singin in the rain deserved to be number one… it was groundbreaking but certainly the Nicholas brothers deserved to be higher, as did Fred astaire
What about the wine bottle wedding reception dance from Fiddler On The Roof, the dream sequence in The Red Shoes, the seductive ballet rehearsal in Center Stage, Oklahoma's dream sequence dance number
The choices in the one were mostly meh for me. Some, like West Side Story, on the other hand, I fully agree with. Though I personally prefer "America" for its energetic fun and "Cool" for its barely contained rage. 😄 If I'm looking at a top dance movie list, though, nothing beats Bollywood!
Yes definitely The Sound of Music. My favourite dance scene from that movie is actually the Laendler scene, Maria and the captain dancing at the party. The connection is my “ah warm and fuzzy feeling”
I loved A Chorus Line and as a kid with my friends would try to learn the audition dance and final dance, good times. I still love the style of that eras dance ware, shinny lycra leotards & catsuit, leg warmers & jazz shoes 😁.
I really loved A Chorus Line. I was also surprised to learn that Jan Gan Boyd, who plays Connie Wong, was in it. She was on the cheer squad when I was in high school. That was when I learned she had gone on to be an actress. Great to see her success!
@@kerensabirch5214 It’s the first time anyone did up the wall and flip over, I think it deserved a mention. It didn’t make you laugh? I’m sorry for you, you mustn’t have a sense of humour. Still makes me smile and I’ve watched it lots of times.
I remember watching that movie and I was so surprised when what I thought was a hallway was a painted wall! The effect is lost in the damn HD copies, though
"Cellblock Tango" is actually difficult to dance the tango to, because it isn't really written as a partners dance. Ginger Roger's dress in "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" was beautiful but it shed feathers the whole time. Fred Astaire said that it was like dancing with a snow storm. After that, his nick-name for her was "Feathers."
A surprisingly good list. I understand that you don't want any one dancer to dominate the list, but I think that Astaire's "You're All The World To Me" from Royal Wedding and his hat rack dance from the same movie are at least worth an honorable mention. I would also say that the Nicholas Brothers' "Jumpin Jive" dance sequence from Stormy Weather is spectacular.
I was a real life dancer until a genetic condition showed its face and now I am in a wheelchair. I will always look back on my dancing days as something very special. :-)
I also was a dancer from before I could walk through a few months ago when I slipped and fell down the stairs and broke my back. The dox said I probably won't dance until I'm completely healed. I feel like my life was taken away!
while fed and ginger are iconic, his knockout pairing with eleanor powell in cole porter's "begin the beguine" (from "broadway melody of 1940") is absolutely amazing. powell was completely astaire's equal as far her phenomenal capabilities as a dancer, and it really shows in this routine: two masters at the peak of their art.
Also my first thought. I've got a published poem about that. I like Fred Astaire dancing on the walls and ceiling. I also like Gene Kelly better than Fred Astaire. So sorry, history, Gene Kelly was the better dancer.
@@edwinacross3452 I dimly recall seeing them on an interview show as old guys. They were all like: You're the better dancer. Oh no you're better than I am. No you Really it's you. And on and on.
One of the most UNDERRATED dance scenes in the movie 'TAP' is when all the greatest tap dancers, AND dancers of all time, come together to show Max how to really get down on the dance floor. Dancers like Sandman Simms, Jimmy Slyde, Sammy Davis Jr and Harold Nicholas of The Nicholas Brothers were maybe 80+ plus years of age and they showed they still got it!! A must to consider for UNDERRATED dance scenes in a movie.
I remember when I was once a Rum Tum Tugger understudy in, “Cats,” in high school which I practiced the dance to the point where I know the steps from memory. I am not a skinny kid, I am chubby. But when I auditioned for the part, the instructor said that even though I didn’t be the one who performs, my dancing was really, REALLY good to not have me as an understudy. My first time on stage was during my high school’s play production of, “12 angry men,” which I auditioned for because my younger sister was in the tech crew, who built the set.
One thing more I appreciated about "In the Heights" was the inclusion of dancers of all shapes and sizes; lots with legs like mine. :-) esp in the opening and the If I WIn the Lottery number.
Jennifer Beals face is still one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life - yes I know it isn’t her dancing here but her coy sadness when looking at the judges (and her incredibly young age - she was 18!) is amazing!
Pretty much all of the dance sequences in Strictly Ballrom were incredible, especially when Scott learns the real Paso Doble from Fran's father, Scott's after hours solo in the studio & and the backstage rumba. Also, how could you not include Pony Song from Magic Mike? The duet between JLo & Richard Gere in Shall We Dance was good and the teacher/student duet and the threeway finale dance in Take the Lead were impressive as well.
Love musicals!!! Great list. White Nights is one of my favorites. So many wonderful performances. (Also, there so many others. The list could go on and on….) Pure joy!
I would have mentioned the last 20 minutes of the musical "Scrooge!" with Thank You Very Much, Father Christmas, Sing a Christmas Carol, etc. Love the choreography in that movie.
Nothing from “Hair”? So many great routines in that movie. And the Nicolas Brothers should have much higher on the list. Those guys were freaking genius.
While I love "Step In Time," my favorite Dick Van Dyke dance number is "Me Old Bamboo" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Also, not for nothing, I think Robin Williams' going through the examples of different choreographers from The Birdcage should have gotten an honorable mention.
Omg I was going to mention Me Old Bamboo, but I limited my chosen routines to just one per musical otherwise my comment would be a mile long.😊 I chose Toot Sweet.✌️
I love that Singing In the Rain made #1! Gene Kelley was sick with a fever during that scene though you can't tell it. The old musicals were full of such true talent that is scarce today. One of my other favorites is the Masquerade scene in Phantom of the Opera.
Please do a second list. Dance movies are my childhood & what inspired me to persue it. I wasn't that great but these movies made me believe I had a chance. Here's my list ❤❤❤❤❤❤: 1. Breakin - Street People 2. Step Up: All In - The Ending Dance 3. Center Stage - The Ending Dance 4. Save The Last Dance - The Audition 5. Fast Forward - The Ending Dance 6. Grease - Hand Jive 7. La La Land - Any Of Them 8. High School Musical 3 - A Night To Remember 9. Footloose - The Barn Scene 10. Chicago - I Can Not Do It Alone (Catherine Zeta Jones was pregnant during filming & she SLAYED every single dance!). Honorable Mentions: Step Up 3D - I don't dance Cats Don't Dance - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now High School Musical - We're All In This Together Breakin - The Sweeping Dance
I'm _so glad_ they mentioned those dance scenes from "White Nights" & "Strictly Ballroom"... But a couple of other dance scenes that I would've liked seen mentioned are Napoleon Dynamite's dance, & the school talent show dance from 1989's "Sing".

I can't watch the barn raising dance too many times.
Yeah, nothing like kidnapping, forced marriage, and human trafficking to get you in a dance mood.
@@byronmccall1554 Exactly!
I can’t stop laughing at what you said oh my sides hurt that was perfect. Thank you Debra Bader❤️
Should have been #2.
The Nicholas brothers are so talented & thank you for highlighting them.
The Christopher Walken one was the music video for Fat Boy Slim's "Weapon of Choice".
All good picks, both yours and the ones in the video.
I'll add one that I like called, _Steam Heat_
You can see it by typing in:
_The Pajama Game - Steam Heat_
As you watch this you may suspect Michael Jackson may have also seen this same dance sequence and incorporated some of those moves into his stage act.
Agree with all of these too!!! Add Jimmy Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy as well so many great choices
I was so pleased when I saw 7 brides for 7 brothers made the list!
Me too! It needs more recognition.
Saw this play at a dinner theater in Jacksonville Fla. Amazing dancing on a small stage. 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎵🎵
So excited!
Should have been even higher. No camera tricks or cuts. They did those stunts.
I’m 60 years old and I remember being 5 or 6 years old standing on my Daddy’s toes as he danced around to Fred Astaire singing, “Cheek to Check”. So, my vote goes to Fred & Ginger! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love cheek to cheek but his dance to top hat and especially the soft shoe routine is great.
Lots of folks love Fred but I say Ginger was better, she did what he did, backwards in heels!
Born in ‘86, but my mother raised me right. On musicals! From every decade!
Same age group here! And, speaking of ABBA - how about that Dancing Queen dance in Mama Mia? Maybe not in my top ten, but SO enjoyable!
Yes where's the Judy Garland musicals with Mickey Rooney??
Busby Berkeley was a very talented musical choreographer but the man was an absolute tyrant. I took several film classes including one on musicals. He was borderline abusive to his dancers and pushed them way past their limit. It was fascinating to learn about him.
One of my all-time favorite movie dance scenes is when the Jets have to be “Cool!” Such spectacular and emotional dancing!! Unbelievable that then-19 year old Eliot “Baby John” Feld was terribly sick during this number and STILL killed it with all the rest!
The original West Side Story is probably the best musical ever made. Perfection in virtually every aspect of the movie.
Totally agree. That was one of the best numbers for sure.
I came here to say the same thing. Ice getting the gang under control after a traumatic event and the emotional and primal release of energy, added to incredible coreography, can't be beat.
One of the male dancers said that dancing on concrete and asphalt in sneakers all day killed their feet.
My heart is super happy to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers -- and in the top 10 no less.. This is my favorite musical and this dance scene I watch over and over... Never gets old..
I love that you included White Nights eve if it is an honorable mention because yes both both Masters deserve credit for the amazing work they did.
It should've been more than an honorable mention. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines? LEGENDS.
I watch Baryshnikov’s incredible turns just because it’s so stunning -
@@valmacclinchy I agree wholeheartedly.
“Whatever Lola Wants” or “Who’s Got the Pain” from “Damn Yankees” needed to be here. Both dance numbers are truly iconic and how can the incomparable Gwen Verdon not be a part of this?
Because these things are the kind of thrown-together venture that one should expect from a dance connoisseur that can't pronounce "frug."
I completely agree. And Rich mans frug, from sweet charity.
How about Top 10 Fred Astaire and/or Gene Kelly dances? Those 2 WERE Film dancing for 30 years!
that would be a good one or top dances by style - Fred Astaire "Dancing on the Ceiling" was ground breaking and still great
🕺💃❤😍
I actually loved the Jazz Hot routine from Victor, Victoria.
good one!
I personally loved James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy! or Cagney with Bob Hope in the dance off, from the movie The Seven Little Foys
As Ginger Rogers said when people gushed over Fred Astaire's talent, "I do everything he does only backward and in high heels."
She never said that. It was said about her and she vehemently disagreed with it
People definitely noticed that. No dumb bunnies, here!
Fred was elegant and she was not . I love Fred and i like Ginger. He was the one i looked at the most. piccolino is my favorite.
Donald O’Connor Debbie Reynolds And Gene Kelly Doing the Song GoodMorning, from Singing in the Rain ☔️ Was a great dance number too.
Definitely more difficult than these selections!
Yes. That's one of my favorites.
That was impressive.
I agree. Better than Kelly splashing about in puddles.
yes!
Ok but I totally agree with the first pick. Gene Kelly was a flippin Genius.
Meh
@@deed468 That really added a lot didn't it?
He was impossible to work with, according to many who worked with him.
My dad knew him growing up
When he did this routine he had a temperature of 104 F due to illness
The dance with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in The Sound of Music should have been on this!! It was absolutely beautiful!!
Oh yes!! The moment we see they are in love! ❤️
Yes, I loved their rendition of the Laendler. It was so beautiful.
The dance in the sewers from Guys and Dolls. One of the greatest dance numbers of all time, either on stage or on screen.
Also one of the best movies ever!
The Blues Brothers, Ray's Music Exchange/'Shake A Tail Feather'
Yes! Can’t believe they left out the blues brothers.
The disclaimer says "strong dance scenes throughout the films"
I agree, some of the best dance numbers were in a "non-dance" movie; the diner, the church, Ray's.
They made a list of Dance scenes in non-dance movies. I think that movie was on it.
Shake tail feather
I really liked "All that Jazz". The dancing is phenomenal in it. I watched this movie in 1979, I was 18. Then I watched it on the internet about 10 years ago and was just as amazed by it as I was back in 1979. The only difference was, in my early 50's I had a better understanding of what the movie was about. As a teenager, I was just drawn in by the dancing.
I watch that film at least twice a year and it is 100% fantastic watching! Bob Fosse is a god.
The final scene with the very young Jessica Lang as the Angel of Death was heart stopping! (no pun intended)
Delighted that you added the Tango from Moulin Rouge!! Such an intense and precise dance. I totally agree with the list but then also remembered Diamonds are a Girls's Best Friends.
Definitely agree with #1. Gene Kelly's athleticism was amazing.
Don't know if it's Top 20, but always loved Gene Nelson's "Kansas City" number in "Oklahoma!". Makes me smile every time!
"Dancing In The Dark", the ultimate romantic dance.
The greatest dance couple in movies of all time. The Bones Club. Then the last dance sequence at the end of the movie. Can' be beat.
I can't believe you mentioned 7 Brides for 7 Brothers!!! That was my favorite musical growing up! And I memorized that dance sequence! Well, as much as I could! 🥰
It‘s crazy how acrobatic the dances were back in the day. You don’t see that nowadays.. absolutely insane!
They danced and moved like they were on air. So light and effortless. Incredible!!!
A Chorus Line has been one of my favorite musicals since I was a kid. i loved Stormy Weather, Grease, Flashdance and Dirty Dancing as well.
I'm so glad The Barn Dance from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers made the top 10! It's one of my favorite dance scenes of all time!
You could do an entire list just based on Bob Fosse. He was the greatest choreographer of the century.
White Christmas is one of my favorite movies. And Mandy is a lot of fun. However, the best dancing in that musical is Choreography. When Vera-Ellen descends to perform her machine-gun tempo taps I become mesmerized. A good list.
I agree, but "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" takes the prize.
Yes!!! That was my first thought! Basically, every scene in that movie is magical. I watch it throughout the year I love it so much.
R.I.P Ann Reinking
I agree - Donald O'Connor's "Make em laugh" is absolutely phenomenal. Its hard to rate things like this against each other, but overall I think you got them all right, but Dirty Dancing should have probably been farther down the list and Eleanor Powell should have been on the list - everyone says Fred and Ginger, but Eleanor was a far superior partner and dancer......and she didnt look at her feet, the way Ginger did.
I absolutely agree with you regarding Eleanor Powell. She's the only one who could make Fred Astaire dance with two left feet.
I agree w/ you about Donald O'Connor. I just commented on my favorite dance number, Moses Supposes! O'Connor was a gift from the dance gods!
Fred’s favourite dance partner was Rita Hayworth apparently, though I think Fred and ginger were amazing together
In the movie “Coming to America “ the dance scene when the African dancers perform before Eddie Murphy’s character meets his possible future queen always blows me away.
YES! And it was choreographed by Paula Abdul!
Al Pacino tango in Scent of a Woman was perfect
Yes, my favourite.
Jacci thank you! I'd forgotten about those classics and now I've got to go watch them 😂
Another play done on a small stage at a dinner theater. The wine bottles on the top hats is soooo cooool!!
OMG. Yes!
Remember the fantastic dancing of the Israelites & the Russians in “Fiddler On the Roof”? Magnificent!
No shit! That was amazing!
The choices in the one were mostly meh for me. Some, like West Side Story, on the other hand, I fully agree with. Though I personally prefer "America" for its energetic fun and "Cool" for its barely contained rage. 😄
If I'm looking at a top dance movie list, though, nothing beats Bollywood!
Agree. America is a standout.
Agreed. Bollywood should have been in here.
The Sound of Music - Leisl and Rolf dancing to 'Sixteen Going On Seventeen' - That was one of my favs along with 7 Brides for Seven Brothers
Yes definitely The Sound of Music. My favourite dance scene from that movie is actually the Laendler scene, Maria and the captain dancing at the party. The connection is my “ah warm and fuzzy feeling”
Total agreement regarding the Laendler scene. It's classy and sexy.
In my youth I was an Arthur Murray ballroom dance instructor. The tango is definitely among my favorites--a license to become a total drama queen.
Al Pacino in "Scent of a Woman".
I’ve always liked “Make ‘Em Laugh” from “Singing in the Rain”, too.
Meh. Never made me laugh either.
@@kerensabirch5214 It’s the first time anyone did up the wall and flip over, I think it deserved a mention. It didn’t make you laugh? I’m sorry for you, you mustn’t have a sense of humour. Still makes me smile and I’ve watched it lots of times.
@@kerensabirch5214 Let me guess, Gen Z?
I remember watching that movie and I was so surprised when what I thought was a hallway was a painted wall! The effect is lost in the damn HD copies, though
"Cellblock Tango" is actually difficult to dance the tango to, because it isn't really written as a partners dance. Ginger Roger's dress in "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" was beautiful but it shed feathers the whole time. Fred Astaire said that it was like dancing with a snow storm. After that, his nick-name for her was "Feathers."
If you watch carefully, you see the shed feathers rolling around, like tumbleweeds, on the floor in the air currents created by their moves.
It is so nice to see dance movies being celebrated and I appreciate your detailed analysis of the featured scenes.
any fosse dance is insane, and so awesome
A surprisingly good list. I understand that you don't want any one dancer to dominate the list, but I think that Astaire's "You're All The World To Me" from Royal Wedding and his hat rack dance from the same movie are at least worth an honorable mention. I would also say that the Nicholas Brothers' "Jumpin Jive" dance sequence from Stormy Weather is spectacular.
I've always loved Ann Margaret dressed in pink in the crazy dance number in Bye Bye Birdie myself. But the Nicholas Brothers were the greatest really.
The "Time After Time" dance in "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion".
Christopher Walken in "Pennies from Heaven."
If you ask me best dance in the movie Grease - i would never say You’re the One That I Want. It would be Hand Jive.
And ONJs trousers weren't leather, they were Satin, you can tell by the shine on them.
I don't think any of the dance scenes in Grease are even memorable! Why are they even in the same category as Gene Kelley?
iT WAS A COPY OF SLUEFOOT.
I thought the very same thing.
I was a real life dancer until a genetic condition showed its face and now I am in a wheelchair. I will always look back on my dancing days as something very special. :-)
🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪
You’re still a dancer.
I also was a dancer from before I could walk through a few months ago when I slipped and fell down the stairs and broke my back. The dox said I probably won't dance until I'm completely healed. I feel like my life was taken away!
I am so very sorry
I’m so sorry❤️🤗🐝
while fed and ginger are iconic, his knockout pairing with eleanor powell in cole porter's "begin the beguine" (from "broadway melody of 1940") is absolutely amazing. powell was completely astaire's equal as far her phenomenal capabilities as a dancer, and it really shows in this routine: two masters at the peak of their art.
Agree 100%
Eleanor Powell is one of only two woman dancers who could keep up with Fred Astaire (Vera-Ellen is the other).
@@elwoodblues9613 Cyd Charisse could. Check out The Band Wagon. The "Dem Bones" scene is highly unusual and GREAT!
Just remember, ginger did everything fred did , but backwards and in high heels.
My first thought.
my mother reminded me of this everytime they were on tv
Fred Astaire also danced with a mop.
And made the mop look good.
They were all like:
You're the better dancer.
Oh no you're better than I am.
No you
Really it's you.
SO many good dance scenes in this film!
Agree!
That’s really cool.
Absolutely fantastic. I still love Disco.
Strictly Ballroom one of my favorite movies.
This is a wonderful video. I also loved "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity. Performed by Shirley MacLaine.
I love that movie. I have an album with all the songs in it. That was a long time a to ago
I had a smile on my face for the entire 24 minutes!
Me too!✌️
Love musicals!!! Great list. White Nights is one of my favorites. So many wonderful performances. (Also, there so many others. The list could go on and on….) Pure joy!
Ok but speaking of awesome tap duos the Moses Supposes dance in Singing in the Rain brings me SO much joy. Easily one of my fave dance scenes
Right!!!
Hair had revolutionary chereography, also Jesus Christ Superstar--Twyla Tharp
@@modernartx Or perhaps decades later it wasn't all that "revolutionary" after all, and no one is impressed...
Yes. My number 1 musical of all time. Could watch it over and over.
Omg I thought of Hair too
One of my favourites : Fonzie doing a dance-off Russian style, brilliant!
that was a favourite, the part I loved the most though was Ralph singing the Anniversary song
"smooth criminal " from the "moonwalker" was the most cohesive, theatrical, dramatic, exciting with the moves like the "lean"- iconic.
On the town my favourite musical had some marvelous numbers d.parkinson
“Molly Brown” the scene in the ballroom.
Fabulous dancing by Debbie and company.
All the dance numbers from 1961 “West Side Story.”😊
Strictly Ballroom was such an underrated move. Loved it from beginning to end.

Amen to that, a wonderful number.
I agree
Glad that "Strictly Ballroom" got some love as an honorable mention.
I love that Singing In the Rain made #1! Gene Kelley was sick with a fever during that scene though you can't tell it. The old musicals were full of such true talent that is scarce today. One of my other favorites is the Masquerade scene in Phantom of the Opera.
Gene Kelly- great dancer, but stiff and overrated
I shouted out loud when you showed the scene from "Strictly Ballroom!" Absolutely loved that movie!
This could be Top 100 dances and it still wouldn't be enough! LOL
Please do a second list. Dance movies are my childhood & what inspired me to persue it. I wasn't that great but these movies made me believe I had a chance. Here's my list ❤❤❤❤❤❤:
1. Breakin - Street People
2. Step Up: All In - The Ending Dance
3. Center Stage - The Ending Dance
4. Save The Last Dance - The Audition
5. Fast Forward - The Ending Dance
6. Grease - Hand Jive
7. La La Land - Any Of Them
8. High School Musical 3 - A Night To Remember
9. Footloose - The Barn Scene
10. Chicago - I Can Not Do It Alone (Catherine Zeta Jones was pregnant during filming & she SLAYED every single dance!).
Honorable Mentions:
Step Up 3D - I don't dance
Cats Don't Dance - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
High School Musical - We're All In This Together
Breakin - The Sweeping Dance
I'm _so glad_ they mentioned those dance scenes from "White Nights" & "Strictly Ballroom"...
But a couple of other dance scenes that I would've liked seen mentioned are Napoleon Dynamite's dance, & the school talent show dance from 1989's "Sing".
I met one of the Nicholas brothers in 1978. He was an older man & I always remember that meeting.
