My heart is broken at our collective loss. Nanci was a lovely person and a fantastic singer songwriter. If there is an afterlife, I hope she and John Prine are having a grand time playing together for eternity. RIP, you beautiful person.
💔🙏😢 I’m so heartbroken. Nanci had a huge talent and a huge heart and she shared it so generously. I wish the angels hadn’t taken her so soon. I hope they show her where John Prine’s bar is in heaven. 🎸🧚🏻♀️🎹🌸😇
I remember being introduced to Nanci's music when I was in my early 20s. I was changed forever. Her voice was always so angelic, yet powerful and aged like a fine wine. Thank you Nanci for allowing us all to see ourselves from a distance in every song. Rest In Peace and thank you.
I viscerally love this artist, Nanci. I love how she writes, I love her voice, her singing and music: her songs offer unique emotions. And I love her sincerity, her honest and clean face and I love her grace, her natural elegance. I love this song of the combative Nanci. Nanci is unique. Love
You have expressed what i had in my heart, am flabbergasted that your writing would have been the exact wording I would have used to describe this artist, she was much underrated in her own country! may you rest in peace Nanci and may your voice joyously met with John Prime and your buddies from Austin Texas.
I still think of Nanci as that shy singer from Austin City Limits that I was sorta wishing was my girlfriend. I'm 61 now and it's sorta a shock to see her aging along with me. I think she should be awarded eternal youth as compensation for the many things she has given us all these years.
Such a beautiful and sad song. One song we should all be listening to today especially in our hard times between neighbors, family members, people driving in cars, and lastly politicians. Too much hate and division today everywhere. Please request this song on your local radio station. I heard it again recently on a Sunday Irish music format show on Sunday (WGBH Boston "A Celtic Sojourn") while driving home and it was very emotional for me. A beautiful song from a beautiful person, Nanci Griffith- may her music and contributions never be forgotten.
Yes, she's great! Love her voice and the songs she writes. Why can't they play her and other greats like Paxton, Prine, DeMent on the radio instead of the commercialized crap that we get?!?
Yes, it can be hard. But "hard" is never the end of the story. Nor does it summarize our experience or predict its culmination. What a beautiful and moving song.
Have been in love with Nanci and her music since I was 21...has been my friend on some bright and dark days. A truly great and genuine artist...no need for sound effects or enhancements...
This hit me this morning. Firstly i miss Nancie.I didn't realise how much.I remember the minute i heard of her passing. I cried for days.Im irish,Nanci adopted our music, culture and country. I saw Nanci at London Feis 2011.Her concert was amazing. I left my company to go see her in a marquee. I met Maura O Connell on my way out.She knew i recognised her with a knoeing Irish smile. Secondly, i went to college in Belfast. From a rural Omagh Co,Tyrone. It was the center of the universe. That was 1980.Through the toughest of dark times, yet the best days.Dare i say as so mant suffered and died.I lived in a student house full of great people, music and craic.( fun ) not drugs.RIP Ms Nanci Griffith RIP James,Stephen and Laura.☘
Beautiful video. Thank you so much! On behalf of the Children's Peace Project of New York, I would like to thank Nanci for giving permission for the children to sing her song for their fundraisers to help children who have become "Collaterally Damaged" by war. Bless Your Heart, Nanci
I am so glad I am not the only person tracking down elusive songs and, yes, her smile made me smile too. I am also proud of the fact that I have lived to see some lyrics become irrelevant.
This women is Brilliant. This woman shows by her presnce she is head and shoulders above mortals. Nanci is brilliant. I just wish the worls would catch up. Lost Arthur Lee ---Don't lose Nanci
I remeber meeting Nanci on Austin city Limits years ago, she was so young and shy then but what a lovely voice. hard to imagine that 30 years have passed since then, but thank you Nanci for many years of music.
I LOVE that there are at least 4 distinctive live versions of this song on UA-cam with unique and inventive arrangements that bring out new colors and textures. Besides this one, I particularly like the Night Music version with David Sanborn's band (and James Hooker) backing her, featuring Hiram Bullock on slide guitar.
I have been searching for this song, for well over 10 years! I saw/heard it only 1 time on TV (PBS concert I think). I have heard of Nanci Griffith before, but have never heard her sing except for the 1 time. I saw her here in a trio with Iris Dement and EmLu Harris. Her voice sounded familiar and I searched for her name & the only lyrics of the song I remembered after all this time. "It's a hard life wh....", and I finally found it!
Love this song, esp w/friends in Ireland - tho things have gotten better since this was recorded. I can still point out Detroit, Capetown, Soweto and dozens of other spots where the distribution of wealth is beyond scope and will bite us in the ass - hopefully after I've departed this troubled world. I was a child in the '60s - they fucked it up.
Sadly -it is very true - "It really is "A Hard Life Wherever You Go" Some of us have better lives then others in this world and others cannot easily deal very well with the cards that have been dealt. Life can be very hard for some no matter what you do.
so it is! .... 'wherever you go' in every corner of the world. the 'some of us' are getting richer in the last months ... and the poorer have been getting poorer ...and even die because of hunger ... that's wrong!
If you know the song, you know it's a political song. If you know the song, you know that here she changes the lyric from "I cannot drive on the left side of the road" to "Finally I'll drive on the left side on the road." This apparently was performed shortly after President Obama's election. One doesn't need to be a neocon to see the connection.
I am somewhere to the right of John Wayne. Nanci is a Texas treasure. If we ignore artists whose politics we do not agree with, especially liberal artists (but I repeat myself) we would have no artists. I find it easy to ignore their politics and focus on their art. The only exception for me is when they demean America. This is not one of those cases.
Last night in Waukegan she said that the first verse was made irrelevant about five years ago and the second was made irrelevant with the election of President Obama and she only hopes that some day the third verse will be irrelevant too.
Did Ms. Griffith suffer from some serious illness in the early 2000s? She was cute in the 90s. Here, she is not yet 60 and she looks older than my mom is over 70. What happened?
Um, what an ass! Are you kidding me dude? Besides she still looks pretty damn good in her late 50s here to most of us. AnD, more important asshat, still sounds terrific.
Ms. Griffith has been singing the same songs for so long, she has become as dated as they are. It's the 21st century for crying out loud! Cronkite? Good gawd, Dan Rather has come and gone! (And we still ain't driving on the left side of the road. The US will always be right of center)

💔🙏😢 I’m so heartbroken. Nanci had a huge talent and a huge heart and she shared it so generously. I wish the angels hadn’t taken her so soon. I hope they show her where John Prine’s bar is in heaven.
🎸🧚🏻♀️🎹🌸😇
Nanci is in heaven, John Prine sits in hell for sexual abuse.
Indeed ‘collective’ loss! Miss her so much, her demise was so sudden....
RIP, you beautiful person
singing so ...... wonderful!

Perfectly stated and communicated!
Thanks, Jeff....it's impossible not to love Nanci

It is not a hard life in Heaven Nanci.....sing with the Angels and we will all be listening. Rest In Peace
Yes, it can be hard.
But "hard" is never the end of the story.
Nor does it summarize our experience or predict its culmination.
What a beautiful and moving song.
I can't quite believe this news. Only 68 years young. Too soon. Remember to live every day of your life everyday. One shot.
Have been in love with Nanci and her music since I was 21...has been my friend on some bright and dark days. A truly great and genuine artist...no need for sound effects or enhancements...
RIP my beautiful lady
One of the best songs of any genre ever written, in my opinion. Epic performance by Nanci and all the other musicians. Sublime. Love and peace.

Thumbs up if her smile at 3:26 made you smile too.
Strong. Beautiful. Telling the truth.💚
Her voice has mellowed over the years. It is better (which is sayin' something!). And she's still cute! One of a kind, a treasure for all to hear.

Lovely to see Nanci perform in the recent past. Still a beautiful voice.
I am so glad I am not the only person tracking down elusive songs and, yes, her smile made me smile too. I am also proud of the fact that I have lived to see some lyrics become irrelevant.

Tom, Are these live performances connected with the Transatlantic Sessions?
Thanks!
She always knew.
My she looks old in this video. Eleven years ago. But beauty internal and external is eternal.

Actually I guess it's closer to 3:24. Oops!
Last night in Waukegan she said that the first verse was made irrelevant about five years ago and the second was made irrelevant with the election of President Obama and she only hopes that some day the third verse will be irrelevant too.
Ненси,милая,Вы Ирланочка!?
here are 96% of the lyrics:
Whadda neocon; turning driving into a political statement; turning time into a political statement - turning ... what part of ... never mind.
Did Ms. Griffith suffer from some serious illness in the early 2000s? She was cute in the 90s. Here, she is not yet 60 and she looks older than my mom is over 70. What happened?
I read she had two separate bouts of cancer that must have affected her, she's only human, needs a medal for continuing on for as long as she did
Um, what an ass! Are you kidding me dude? Besides she still looks pretty damn good in her late 50s here to most of us. AnD, more important asshat, still sounds terrific.
