    I acquired some of these quite some time ago as a gift, but haven't had an opportunity to use them until now. The cost of getting the Shave & Save tool here in Canada is lunatic (which is not your fault, but that of the sellers). So, a razor should achieve the same effect, yes? (but with far more care on my part)

    I heard that Derwent doesn't make Artbars anymore. they seem so unique and a bit different from watercolor or oil pastels. I wish I could try them and would if they weren't so hard to get and expensive. Is there any chance of them being brought back? Please bring them back!

    Just got some of these - at first wasn't an immediate fan, but they are growing on me. However, for the work I do, I doubt I use them as a stand-alone medium. With mixed media, I'm finding them helpful in their versatility of laying down both opaque fields of rich color and creating washes. It sounds like I'm coming late into the game on this product since I've seen mentions of them being discontinued. So...I suppose I shouldn't become too attached to using these! :(

    Do art bars resist watercolour, or are they able to be used like gouache in watercolour work?

    But what I would like to add, after sitting for a while in a box, strangely about 1 cm of only one Artbar wax bar turned completely to crumble. It was a mess to squeeze it back together and naturally that piece lost it's strength to be put against the paper. And most other bars from that 72 tin crumble quite a bit at the ends when you first use them (after use those parts smooth out and stop crumbling). Perhaps there is some solution? Like, should I spray them with water, dry them out and use?

    I think there should be a better demonstration of the product. Derwent should do a range of different pictures with all there newer products to give us ideas how to use them in actual paintings.

    My most favourited shade turned out to be Duck Egg Blue. I love it. I have three of it. Earth tones are quite dark, but those are useful in painting shadows etc. I'd say Artbar wax bars are not for kids to play with but rather for some work. Daniele, I do not mean you're a kid, but I mean to say maybe you can try to use them differently, like less opaque - just take them off the crayon with a paint brush and use as an in-between poster paint and watercolours.

    • @GypsyChaos1
      @GypsyChaos1 9 років тому +2

      These are wax based - more like crayons than pastels, though formulated to be water soluble. Oil pastels are just that - oil based; they don't play well with water.

      ***** Inktense are different. These are like watersoluble crayons. Inktense are watersoluble colored pencils. There are Inktense sticks as well, which are decidedly different from Artbars. I know this because I buy everything because I'm addicted to art supplies... :)

      pumkin54 i know the addicted to art supplies feeeeellls!! yh i have inktense im not too keen on them tbh. Im not keen on derwent anymore either :/ only their graphites and studio pencils!

    • @pumkin54
      @pumkin54 10 років тому

      DRAKONETTA I just like Inktense because once it's dry it doesn't budge, so you can do some nice layering and visual mixing right on the paper. I do watercolor though, which does kind of budge, so Inktense took some getting used to.

    I bought a 24 box, and I'm glad I didn't go for a 36 or a 72. What a delusion! Muddy, lifeless, dull, muted colours, the worst I used in my life. Any of the cheapest school gouache colors shine as artist paint in comparison, believe me. If you want to try them go and buy ONE of the colour you like best and test it on paper. You will understand what I mean. A total waste of money, Derwent should refund us the money paid, shame on them.

  • @grahamjeffries
    @grahamjeffries 12 років тому +2

    Well I thought this video was perhaps done before really knowing the product as it seemed quite simple as if trying it out for the first time,sorry but a disappointment to try and sell a new product with a video like this instead of showing what it can do in a painting and not just craft

  • @Lanternamagika
    @Lanternamagika 11 років тому +2

    Dreams, I was't kidding (pun intended). This stuff is a scam. I would not dump this gooey stuff not even on my enemy's kids. Even taking it off the crayon with a brush doesn't make the paint any better: it is always the same dull, lifeless, muted mud. Worse that the worst poster paint off a supermarket shelf. And 30 times as expensive. But if you like it it's ok with me. I don't :-))

    Not a good example of an Artist and Product Manager demonstrating a new product. This video would not make me look twice at Art Bars.

  • @kitale100

    I was quite interested in the Derwent Artbars and was on the point of ordering a box but decided to watch this demonstration first. What an unattractive mess and waste of bars and there is nothing bright or vibrant about these colours at all. The video has completely put me off buying. At least that has saved me a whole heap of money because these bars are not cheap.
