  • In this video, I demonstrate the steps required to repair a common problem with the factory radio in a 2003 Honda Accord. The symptoms of this problem include a loss of the radio backlight, as well as the backlights for the HVAC controls, such that neither are visible at night.
    I have to credit UA-cam users "mitch cox" and "HiTechElectronic" for providing the information I used to make this repair. Please also check out their videos, as I found them extremely helpful. My motivation for creating my own how-to video for this repair is to simply provide all of the information in one tutorial, including the removal, repair, and re-installation of the factory radio. In my initial searches for a solution to this problem, I did not find any videos that contained all of the information in one clip. I hope that this video will be helpful to some of you who have experienced this issue with the 2003 Accord.
    I am not a professional mechanic, and my videos are intended to be used for informational purposes only, so please use this information at your own risk. I take no responsibility for the success you may have at attempting this repair on your own, and I urge you to be smart and do things safely if you do take on this repair.
    Thank you for watching!

    Thanks for posting such a detailed series of videos. BUT BEWARE!!!! Just to save other people the time I wasted on this --- this video shows repair of the OEM radio which has the 6-CD changer. It wasn't clear from the video. For those of us with the single CD player, the radio is completely different once it's taken out of the housing. If you're in this boat, you're better off searching for a replacement radio on eBay.

      Thanks for the update. However, at 01:58 the front of the radio in the middle on top clearly says "6 DISC CD CHANGER".

      @@coloradostrong _“clearly”_ is a stretch in that size 4 font, lol. And anyway it still would’ve been a helpful thing to have heard him clarify on just in case as it does make a huge difference in whether these instructions will work for your application or not. Very thankful to have found this comment before starting 🙌🏻🙌🏻

    This video, and the second one, were perfect. I followed Matt's instructions and it worked like a charm. The only thing I really did differently was solder in a little jumper wire instead of using the conductive ink pen, which was a little tricky because it is a very tight space, but in the end, worked great!

    Thank you, Matt! I just did this fix on my 2003 Honda Accord EX V6 with 6-CD changer, no-Nav. Panasonic radio model number 39175-SDA-A110. Instead of using the pen, I removed the part at R797 and traced a solder bead between the contacts.

    Hey Matt, thanks so much for posting this great video. Your instructions were so detailed and clear. Saved me a bunch! All worked out perfectly.
    3 tips for others:
    1. The ribbon cable was very easy to remove in my Honda. I think the trick is not to try to remove the whole black connector. The Ribbon just slid out FROM the connector, which stays attached to the board. You've just got to be careful putting it back in the right way around.
    2. I soldered a fine "jumper" cable over the fuse. Needed to sharpen the tip of my old Weller to reach into the tiny gap at the back.
    3. Also, to remove the storage compartment, I pulled the gearstick into "1", after putting a brick under a tyre so the car didn't roll away. Ha ha!
    Be brave everyone. You can do it!

    Will be doing this on my lady’s 03 accord. Same issue, went through fuses, a few disassembly and reassemblies, even went down to the junk yard and tried using a different head unit(fail) and lastly installing all 4 new speakers and still nothing. wish i wouldve seen this video sooner but thank you for the precious information you shared with us 🤙🏼

I tried using the circuit writer with the fuse in and could not get a good connection so I ended up having to remove the fuse, which took a long time to get it out, and applied several coat and it worked. This saved me lots of headaches and money! Thanks for posting. The hardest part for me was popping off the front edge of the dash piece covering the top of the radio. I resorted to wedging the sharp end of a paring knife in the crack to open it up just a bit, then sliding the large trim tool to pop it off. Just had to make sure to work along the dull side of the knife to avoid an ER visit.

      Cool! I'm glad this video helped. I think that was the hardest part for me, too, especially since that part of the dash was quite soft and I was worried about damaging it.

    This repair is documented very well in these three videos. I was able to pull it off in about 2 hours after watching this video twice and then having my laptop on hand during each step. The trim removal tools and the solder were my only outlay ($20). You must use a narrow point on your soldering iron to get between the two other components when you lay in the solder, if you go that route.
    I could have driven around without a radio for a week and spent 8 times as much for a swap of a rebuilt unit or 15 times as much for a outright purchase (and don't forget the $50 shipping charges).
    Excellent work and my profound thanks!!!

    2004 Accord V6. Great video! Very helpful. Appreciate the detailed instructions. I opted to buy a new/refurbished board ($50) from an OEM vendor online instead but with your directions it took me a little over an hour from start to finish to replace it. My cable on the circuit board was easy to remove. I placed my fingers as close as possible to the connection point and gently moved the cable side to side slightly and it came right out. Did the same when I reconnected it to the new board
    Great job man! You saved me hours of frustration. You ROCK dude, thx!

    Thanks Matt! I just followed those steps and the radio works perfectly. The whole process took about an hour. After I opened the radio and found the defected component, I realized the pen I got was a circuit coating pen not a circuit writer, so I just got a tiny wire and twisted it around the component to short it. I'll probably have to use the circuit writer sometime soon, but for now it works.

    Thank you very much! It works well! But in my radio, it seemed like there was not much space like yours to make a join and put a wire. So fortunately, I was able to take out the resistance and just put enough tin to make the contact. It really seems they made it easy to break and hard to work there, just to make us pay to change the radio or something like that... Whatever, your video was very useful. Thank you again! ;)

    Honda Accord 2004 EXL V6 radio display light not working.
    Thank you for the very detailed video on removing and fixing the radio display light. It’s not an easy fix but the video was very helpful during the removal and repair of the circuit. Once I removed the circuit board I realized how small the fuse was, and how tight an area you had to work with. I used needle nose pliers to break the plastic case on the fuse which left the two contacts to the circuit board. My soldering iron is a little big for this kind of repair so I was worried about affecting the two circuits on either side of the fuse. I used telephone wire to bridge the circuit, because it’s thinner than normal electrical wire. I cut the wire about 5 inches long and stripped off about an inch. Once the wire was soldered across the contacts I cut off the excess. I checked the radio display light before I put everything back together, and it worked. Total repair time was about 3 hours, but it saved me the 800 dollars the dealer said it would cost to fix.
    Thanks.

      Bob Pearson Great work, Bob! You are more brave and more skilled than I am. I had the same concerns about working in such a tight area, and my cheap, bulky soldering iron seemed like it was likely to butcher the job. Excellent work getting it done with phone wire. My issue is that the control lights for the radio/HVAC dont work, however the backlight for the radio display works fine. Great set of instructions. Radio worked for 4 months after using liquid wire to jumper the fuse. Last night the radio display started to flicker, heavy electric burning odor and then the display went out. Any ideas on what's blowing the fuse on the mother board? Is the problem isolated to the mother board and will replacing the radio fix it?

    So I just successfully did this fix with a circuitwriter pen. I actually pried off the tiny fuse/resistor and worried I had pulled out the leads into the circuitboard... but I guess it's OK. My initial coat of ink almost bled laterally onto the adjacent circuit--was super close, be careful not to over-apply much at once, it will move. I used a 60-watt light bulb about 5 inches from the board, left it for almost 10 hours or so.
    Brought it back into the car, plugged it up, and it worked! But then the next time I turned the car on it was out again. So I brought it back in and did 2 or 3 more coats of ink on it, letting it cure longer under the light each time. Probably total of 36 hours under the light just to be safe. During this time I took the A/C panel and plugged it back in to the car so I could use it while I was curing the radio board. That works fine, all controls work without the radio.
    So after my extra coats I plugged it up and so far today it is working fine! Backlights for A/C work, too. I also took the time to install an auxiliary cord adapter to plug into my phone. Also, apparently the previous owner of my car had hooked up an XM antenna, which was preventing me from getting the lower frequencies on my radio, and almost by luck I realized where the old radio cord was, plugged that back in and I get my full FM radio spectrum now.
    So I was worried that the fix didn't work at first, but putting on extra 2-3 coats of ink (carefully... don't use too much at one time or it will bleed over) and curing it under a light did the trick for me.

    Thank you for the post Matt! It was very straight forward and easy to follow. I did end up damaging one clip from the gear shift panel, but was able to super glue back into place.
    I used the Circuit Writer, put it all back together and the system lit up like new! Unfortunately, my fix lasted no more than 10 seconds. I think my problem is that I only gave it a few hours to dry before testing. Do you know if you have to fully cure before use? Has your fix been long term? Also, my radio lit up but not my other panel lights. Thoughts?

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 років тому

      +Miles Osborn Hey Miles, I'm sorry to hear your repair didn't last very long. When I did this, I let it cure for at least 24 hours....not necessarily because I knew that's how long it required, but simply because I couldn't get around to finishing it up any sooner. In any case, the repair has lasted over 2 years (as far as I know - the vehicle in my video belonged to a friend, who has since sold it to another acquaintance of mine). Several other people have commented here that they had the same issue with the repair failing after only allowing it to cure for a few hours, and I believe at least one person later replied that it worked "permanently" on the second try after giving the conductive ink at least 24 hours to set up before using the radio again.
      I would try again, if you have the patience, and see what happens. Good luck, and let me know how it turns out for you!

    If by any slim chance you're still connected to these videos, I'm looking for some help. I followed and finished and repaired the fuse with the circuit write and lights all work. However, the lights will NOT go off with the power off and key out, etc. The lights are always on and get quite hot. I can pull the radio fuse to turn lights off, which also turns off radio as well.Thoughts? Fixes? I have a tentative plan to somehow "thin" or lessen any excessive amounts of my sloppy circuit writer pen fix.

      I hope you were able to resolve your issue, but in case you are still having trouble - I believe several other people have mentioned that they have the same problem. My guess is that some of the conductive ink may have "bled" onto another part of the circuit board, preventing the On/Off switch from cutting power to the radio. As you suggested, it may be necessary to remove the conductive ink and try again. I don't know of the best way to do that, although I suspect that a soldering iron would heat and liquefy the conductive ink so that it could be wiped/scraped away.
      I hope you have solved this issue, and if so - please respond if you get a chance to let me know what you did. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

    Hi, just have a question. do I follow the same process if the radio does work but the sound doesn't come out???

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 років тому

      Unfortunately, I believe that is a different problem. You could try connecting an external speaker to the speaker connection on the back of your radio to see if you can eliminate the possibility of a speaker wiring issue in your vehicle. If the sound plays that way, then you know you need to trace out the speaker wiring. If you still get no sound, then it would suggest you have an issue with the radio itself, but I do not believe this particular repair will solve that issue. In that case, I would search for a Honda online forum and browse through the electronics section. I bet you can find a lot of good information there.
      Good luck!

I was going to try the "shorting" on the radio fuse to see if that not only corrects the back light, but also the ON/OFF issue, My dealer said it was the mother board on the radio & just to get a new radio. I'll post if I find out anything.

    So when your radio goes blank and sometimes comes on and off would that be a fuse or circuit board

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 років тому

      Zachary Jacobs The backlight going blank could definitely be related to this bad resistor, but I think the intermittent audio is due to either loose wiring/speaker cables, or a problem with the radio motherboard. Several other people have mentioned that problem, and based on the little bit of research I did, it sounds like that problem is caused by a failing motherboard.
      Good luck!

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 років тому

      +stillettopumps86 I honestly don't know the answer to that, but I would think that as long as the housing/trim is compatible with your car and the wiring connectors are the same, that you should be able to interchange the radios. However, that is assuming that they have the same specs....if one has something like a navigation system and the other doesn't, I doubt you'll be able to interchange them.
      I'm sorry I'm not more knowledgeable. I would search for an online Honda forum and see what you can find out. There is usually a technology/electronics portion of such forums with some really good information.

      @mattpayne4087  7 років тому

      I'm sorry to hear about your issue! Unfortunately, I don't think the repair in this video will solve that problem. I'm not really sure what might be causing that, but you may want to check to see if a speaker fuse is blown. You could try removing the radio and then connecting a different external speaker to the back to see if any sound plays. If that works, then you know there is likely an issue with the speaker wiring (or perhaps a fuse somewhere) in the vehicle.
      I hope that is at least somewhat helpful. Good luck, and please let me know if you figure it out, as I'm sure there are other people that may have the same issue.

      +Vignesh Kumar Hi Vignesh, did you wait about 24 hours after applying the conductive ink before testing the radio? Multiple people have said that they had issues when not giving the ink 24 hours or more to cure. If you tested your repair less than 24 hours after completing it, the ink might not have had time to set up, so you might need to take the radio back out and try again.
      If you did wait 24 hours, you may just have not gotten good electrical contact with the conductive ink.
      I hope you're able to figure it out. Good luck!

      @@Babybuuxxx @preciousbullett1482 You stroke luck, i have repaired this 4 months ago and no problem since. If you have the static shredding noise and big pop sound on the radio speakers then that's it (not the screen issue), the problem is failing solder joints. I resoldered all joints and it completely fixed it. I tried other things before doing that and nothing worked. It requires the ability to do fine electronics soldering a skill i already had. Get a quality soldering iron with a fine tip like Hakko, with good temperature regulation, don't buy a generic cheap soldering iron or it will considerable increase difficulty in doing the job. You also need gel solder flux such as in a seringe and small gage solder. First clean the board with ISP alcohol then brush a small area of the board with a thin layer of flux gel and reflow each joint with your soldering iron. Repeat until all joint have been reflowed. I suspect the failing joint to be one of the 32 pins recangular IC which has a longer middle ground joint that looked bad or one of the big diodes mounted vertically on the side of the board. Take your time and if you haven't done it before practice on a scrap board first.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 років тому

      +Yvette Beasley Hi Yvette, I'm not totally sure what might be causing that, but it almost sounds like you have an issue with the power being sent to the radio. If I remember correctly, you have to enter the radio code any time the battery is disconnected. So if the radio is asking for the code every few minutes, it seems like something is interrupting the power from the electrical system. I don't know what might be doing that, but if you want to troubleshoot it yourself, you could pull the radio out and turn accessories on and then use a multimeter to check for voltage at the power connector on the back of the radio unit. If the voltage drops to zero occasionally, then you'll know you have found the cause of the problem. The next step would just be finding the source of the voltage issue, which would probably involve tracing the power wire backwards, starting at the electrical connector.
      I hope that helps. Good luck, and let me know if you figure it out.

    The best thing to do is get the metra dash kit and buy an aftermarket cd player. Honda factory radio on this model is crap

      +Sun Spider Yeah, it seems like a pretty poor design. They definitely had a lot of issues with this particular unit. I hope you can get yours repaired!
