The problem is that people do not read. You need to purchase authentic lithium Ion batteries from the manufacturer and not buy them from other companies online. A family in my area is out of their house because they purchased a random battery online for their Dyson and it exploded. READ THE INSTRUCTION MAUNAL!
What about Hoverboards?? Look at how many fires have been started because of Hoverboards, people have died, family’s homes have burned to the ground because of Hoverboard fires. This is scary stuff. What i have been told is that it is very dangerous to overcharge a lithium ion battery. I used to work next to a Sheraton that had a fire sparked by a computer charger.
Strange how the people that push these things, never mention those points when something like this happens! Every one knows that these batteries have that potential, but they still push it like it's some kind of salvation! Some one needs to look into it or recall them until it can be corrected!
The city needs to somehow ban purchasing and selling lithium ion batteries off Ali express and non reputable sellers. Not only for the supermarket an laundromat but look at all those apartment buildings with people living in them that might experience smoke getting in or seeping through their windows etc. an water damage by putting out that fire... Total tragedy across the board...
A good answer would be an automatic cut off - within the bike or battery housing - that simply ends the charging when the battery/bike is fully charged. Mandated on the manufacturers. Over-charging, e.g., a person forgetting to unplug it, falling asleep, etc., is usually the cause of the thing causing the fire. Ebikes are GREAT.
@Burp Robrox oh, really? I'll need to look into that. I have an ebike and I am into them. Don't know too much about the tech though. Thanks for the comment.
It's not just from charging, it's also from riding them and making the batteries hot. I seen a video on here a couple weeks ago where a guy is riding his couple thousand dollar dirt bike looking ebike on the highway and after about 25 minutes of riding it he stops at an intersection and the battery goes POOF and starts smoking and hissing while he was sitting on it. He jumped off and let it fall over and then battery goes POOF again and bursts in to flames.
Just be careful that you buy an ebike from a reputable company. Also, as they may learn here, you need to buy the batteries that are recommended by the manufacturer. And always use an approved charger from the manufacturer. When you follow those rules, ebikes are very, very safe.

This is what happens when you overcharge lithium ion batteries. That’s why all lithium ion battery packs must either have a Battery Management System (BMS) built in or the charger must be lithium ion safe which means it cuts off sending current once the battery is charged. Many of those chargers have a light that changes from red (charging) to green (done). When it’s green there’s no more current flow. As for the BMS I mentioned, it’s a circuit board the ties to every cell in the battery pack and monitors each one’s voltage and current levels and prevents overcharging and even over discharging which is also a problem. The BMS also prevents short circuits by literally disconnecting a battery where there is a current/heat spike. DeWalt manages their batteries safely. When was the last time you heard of a DeWalt battery pack exploding? You haven’t.
