    More info on these wonderful plants here: www.abc.net.au...
    The Australian Gimpie Gimpie plant has the most painful stingers in the world. Some describe it as being burned by hot acid and electrocuted at the same time. It is also known as the suicide plant, and for good reason. With extremely fine needles that are stinging hairs, just a simple swipe of your skin over a leaf will embed toxins into your skin, whose painful effects can last for up to two years.
    There is a story of an incident during World War 2 training exercises, when an officer was walking an Australian bush track in Queensland. On the trail he had to stop to go to the bathroom as nature called. During this bathroom break, he unknowingly reached out and used a large broad leaf of a Gimpy Gimpy plant as toilet paper.
    So intense was the agony of the pain in the most sensitive of areas, the officer was driven to madness and ended up drawing his firearm and shooting himself in the head. Such was the story that has been told.

    My son just hit on one while hiking through Stoney Creek, just outside of Woodford Qld. He was traversing some rather difficult terrain and grabbed onto one by its stem to steady himself. It is a truly awful experience to see a loved one endure the raging and searing pain, and I can't imagine I could ever cope with it myself.

    I got stuck on both knees, and up my quads today. I've never been in so much pain. I was screaming at one point. Now, 6hrs on. My legs are still on fire. I tried waxing (holy hell the pain) and the 1:10 hydrochloric acid solution soaked on toilet paper over my legs for 30 mins. If you do this, DO NOT use cold water. Use warm. The pain was excruciating. I've tried topical Xylocaine. Peppermint oil gives instant relief for a minute. It still is sooo incredibly painful. I get that if it was on your face or over whole body, that death might seem like a way out.

    I had fantastic results treating Gympie Gympie with Bentonite clay: add water to Bentonite clay powder and make a poultice, cover the stung area, then cover with a moist cloth and wrap everything with cling wrap (so it's not drying out) Leave for 12 hours, then wash off. Might need a second application for 8-12 hours, depending how it feels, but usually one application works. Bentonite clay is able to draw toxins and impurities (like splinters) out of your skin. This is the only treatment that works and won't leave you with scars like using hydrochloride acid or pain when applying it.

    Going from Top Swanfels Road up the south-west ridge to Mount Doubletop, once you get off what many decades ago might have been a 4WD track, practically can barely tell it was - there is a gympie gympie forest there, the largest I have ever seen anywhere - and it covers the whole slope, no avoiding it, and is deep as well. My party spent over 45 minutes limbo (ducking, dodging, weaving, talking each other past parts of the plants) through that forest. You cannot just smash them down with poles either, because then the fine hairs release into the air, damaging eyes and lungs..
    Surprisingly none of us copped more than a glance there because we were being careful. Later on though, coming down from Swan Knoll through the worst and largest lantana stand I have ever been witness to, there I got stung head to foot everywhere - because they were hidden amongst the lantana, hard to see, especially in the failing light, as we were all a bit panicky about being trapped there overnight, so caution was abandoned for speed. I still remember telling one of my companions I just got stung badly, and her reply was 'That's too bad, we can't worry about that now, we have to get out!'
    On the drive back out it was practically unbearable. And it hurt for days. Worst experience with the plant.

    • @jelbuilderfilms
      @jelbuilderfilms  2 роки тому +3

      Sounds crazy, Darren. You're right, the fine hairs do release in the air and can give you a secondary. On yesterday's hike up to Stinson's Wreck, I got another direct swipe of hidden Gympie underneath my right forearm. Don't care what anyone reckons, these things burn like heck and I've got a reasonably high pain threshold. Still copping the pain today, aaah, it's great to be human. LOL.

    There are a few species of Dendrocnide in Australia, some more dangerous than others. Another trap for the unwary is that stinging trees can be mistaken for the harmless Macaranga tanarius. It's a rainforest pioneer species and tends to grow in similar locations to the Gympie Gympie.

    I wouldn't call it a "weed" like what you stated in the video. The gympie gympie is a native and certain native fauna actually find uses to this plant. (I remember reading it is either a moth/ caterpillar or ant that eats those leaves). According to a local indigenous Cairns, QLD "Fine hairs can sting the skin for two months but the root juice relieves it.”. Also using a wax strip will pull out those thin fine hairs that have stung from the skin

      Poison Ivy is like getting a good slap across the face.... whilst Gympie Gympie is like getting kicked in the face and one's teeth broken. Pretty bad analogy my end, I know, but Gympie's can inject hundreds of neurotoxins in one's skin possibly landing them in hospital for days. Poison Ivy has nothing on our Gympie Gympies.

    Hey mate, these look like young giant stinging trees, not the gympie stinger. The giant stinging trees start off looking very similar to the gympie stinger but the stinging tree grows out to 40m or so & the gympie stinger to a shrub a few mtrs high sometimes higher. The easiest way to identify them (without touching them to check the pain intensity) is the way the leaves connect to the stems. In your video it looks like the stem connects further down the leaf not at the margin as is the giant stinging tree. My screen isn't the best quality so can only go off what I can see. As I wasn't there, you would be the best one to verify.🙂

    Great video mate! I found two small plants near cedar creek North of Brisbane but do you know any spots near brissy where I can find larger plants. I would like to do a documentary for my Polish channel. It is one of the most fascinating plants on the planet.

      @jelbuilderfilms  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. These plants are in abundance everywhere in Lamington National Park, Illinbah, Christmas Creek, Binna Burra and Mt Lindesay areas. I haven't seen them in areas closer to Brisbane... possibly in D'Aguilar National Park but I can't confirm. One thing you might be interested in if you're doing a video on these that not many people know about (and I forgot to add it to this video at the time), is that generally wherever you find a Gympie Gympie plant, there is the Cunjevoi plant nearby which provides a natural relief to the stinging pain. So basically, if the Gympie stings you, find a neighbouring Cunjevoi plant (looks like elephant ears, also called a Spoon Lilly), cut it open and rub it on your affected area, and it will not hurt as bad. Hope that helps.... 😉

But driving up to Binna Burra, heaps of big ones simply growing each side of the road just as you drive a few kms from the O'Reilly's Cafe. Good luck with it, I don't recommend playing with the stuff. It's hairs can disperse if disturbed and get into your respiratory system, and also it'll sting through clothing and gloves, so Def exercise caution. 👍👍
