  • Imagine you're hanging out somewhere in the forests of Australia, when suddenly, it seems like someone has poisoned the air. Your eyes are watering, your throat is going crazy, you can't breathe freely, and you're constantly sneezing. The smallest particles of the most dangerous plant in the world are flying around you: Gympie-Gympie. It looks so ordinary you'd never notice it unless you know what it is. Let's see if there are any other dangerous plants like this to watch out for.

In Australia's embrace, 'neath eucalyptus tall,
A perilous secret, in the forest's thrall.
    Gympie-Gympie, a deceiver's guise,
An unforgiving plant with venomous ties.
In the air, a poison, subtle and sly,
Eyes watering, under the southern sky.
Throat gripped in nature's venomous song,
A symphony of danger, a warning gong.
Beneath the leaves of a seemingly gentle green,
A sting that lingers, a tale unseen.
Oh, Gympie-Gympie, with tiny shards of pain,
A dance with agony, in the forest's domain.
In its touch, a punishment that lasts for years,
A memory of pain, a cascade of tears.
Nature's paradox, in the ordinary it hides,
A perilous secret, where danger abides.
Yet, in the wilds where dangers entwine,
    Gympie-Gympie's not the only sign.
Other plants, in shadows, quietly wait,
    Nature's caution, a perilous state.
So tread with care, in Australia's embrace,
Where unforgiving plants find their space.
A reminder in verses, a cautionary call,
In the forest's dance, where dangers enthrall.

Stick to establish tracks and you'll be fine, it's rare to see it in populated places without warning signs. I've been stung by this plant exploring a forest for a long abandoned mine from the 1880's. The pain was a bit rough for about 24hrs and could feel it for 6 months but I did my remedies for the plant when I got home which probably worked with recovery. Introduced Lantana has taken over most of populated accessible ares where the gympie gympie used to thrive.
