    The 'aged' keyboard player is Richard Barbieri who began his career with the band Japan, fronted by David Sylvian. Seriously talented band and one deep rabbit hole of music to explore. But then, so are Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson and PT are extraordinary. Thanks for doing it.

    They are an English band except for the 2nd guitarist, he's from Florida. The lead singer/guitarist is Steven Wilson, a musical prodigy. He created Porcupine Tree as a fictitious band, kind of like Spinal Tap. He created and performed all the music. It caught on, he was signed to record deal and was told he would have to tour and he would have to create a band to perform with him. He ended Porcupine Tree around 2010 and has been a solo artist since, with another amazing group of musicians around him. He also had about 4 or 5 side projects, the two biggest being No-Man and Blackfield.

    Steven Wilson, English through and through, lol. He has big Floyd influences. The drummer is Gavin Harrison, who was one of 3 drummers on your recent King Crimson video. I was a "mild" Wilson fan until i saw and heard this then i got into him big time. To me, since Frank is no longer here, Steven is the greatest living singer/song writer/composer/multi instumentalist/ producer/mixer etc around.
    A tit-bit, when Steven plays live, he is bare footed.
    He did the "Routine" song you reacted to not long ago

      This was the song that got me too! I especially love the way it transitions from the "head banging" part into a soaring groove.
      I had even seen them live a couple of times and it just didn't click. Now I'm wondering what was wrong with me that it took me so long to get it. 😂.
      Huge fan now.

    his own music catalogue is huge but ontop of that he has remastered/remixed many albums from top class bands. King Crimson, he has worked on many of their early classic albums. Also worked on another prog rock giants albums, Yes. There are other big bands too who's albums he has worked on. Rock giants don't let just anyone re work their albums, lol.

    So, Porcupine Tree are a British band that started with Steven Wilson (guitar, keys, bass and vocals) and Chris Maitland (drums and vocals]). They recorded music heavily inspired by Pink Floyd. They sent their recordings to their local radio station, with a note that said they thought they'd found lost Pink Floyd songs. They got played on the station, and listeners clambered for more. One great hoax of the late 80's. They were signed, and the rest is...

    More Steven Wilson genius. The band's beginning is a very interesting story. It started as a joke but became a monster. They were almost unheard of in the mainstream, but sold out whenever they toured. Deadwing is one of my favourite albums of all time. The first and title track is like getting hit by a train travelling at 200mph and being dragged along through a snowstorm for nearly 10mins. Lots of dark and light, really unique guitar phrasing but yeah, with Knopfler, Gilmore, influences... The drummer in PP is inhuman, the accuracy, the commitment to the performance, is their trademark. They worked really hard to give a wonderful show. Yeah. I thought you'd dig these guys. They were a great band.

Steven Wilson, the composer, lead singer and all round musical genius that heads up the band is a modern day maestro. His solo stuff after PT is also fantastic. Check out his Hand. Cannot. Erase album, which includes the track ‘Routine’ that you have already reviewed, for some of the most fantastic modern day compositions with the very best musicians currently anywhere out there.

    Steve Wilson started Porcupine Tree as a one-time release, almost a joke band. Well, not a "joke" but a "pretend prog band". First release was just a few songs on a cassette, but then he was surprised how many people were interested in those songs so he did some more. The initial releases were more psychedelic or "space rock". But that gradually changed, and by the mid-1990's (albums _"The Sky Moves Sideways"_ in 1995 and _"Signify"_ in 1996) Porcupine Tree was almost *too* much like Pink Floyd, so he veered a little away from that. And then around 2002 he decided to blend in some influences from Iron Maiden, and the band became more metal-ish with the album _"In Absentia"._
    The very first Porcupine Tree releases were pretty much solo albums, but then he started to have chances to do some small tours, so he teamed up with Richard Barbieri (keyboards), who had been one of the key members in the group named Japan. He also added Chris Maitland (drums) and Colin Edwin (bass), which made up the "real" band version of Porcupine Tree for several years.
    There was a bit of a fallout between Chris and Steven, so Chris left and Gavin Harrison came in on drums for _"In Absentia"._ Gavin had been doing session work or substituting on tours for several bands since the 1980's. Richard had worked with him, and I think Steven had worked with him on some other albums. After Porcupine Tree disbanded in 2010, Gavin went on to work in the bands The Pineapple Thief and did a few tours as a drummer with King Crimson.
    And of course the big news is that after about a decade of Steven doing his own solo albums, Steven, Gavin, and Richard started quietly working on some new songs, and thanks to many months of Covid-lockdowns they now have a new album which will be released at the end of June 2022. They're also planning a short tour for the end of this year.

    • @garanceadrosehn9691
      @garanceadrosehn9691 2 роки тому

      Note that this is just a quick overview of "the band" as a whole. A full description of all the music that Steven has worked on would take hundreds of pages. I say that because such a writeup does exist, and it is hundreds of pages long. Both Gavin and Richard have also worked with many groups and have done multiple solo releases of their own. And Colin has been a part of several smaller bands over the last 10 years.

    it had to happen. Prog. (well, Frank was also prog, but then he was everything there's a name for, plus more). Much more PT out there... alas, the band stopped a few years back - but there are rumours of another tour sometime.
    PT also got me buying albums again. No vinyl for well 35 years, then a new stylus for the Shure M75 and at least 8 PT albums now. The PL12D still goes! Early PT (The Sky Moves Sideways) sound extremely like Pink Floyd in their Meddle era - a sound that really did need more content.
    There is tons of PT stuff to look at. A good all around intro is Trains.

  • @sicko_the_ew
    @sicko_the_ew 3 роки тому

    To add to what's been said so far, I'll start with "Wes" (John Wesley - who I thought was from Texas - but anyway it is at least a trans-Atlantic band). He thought he'd landed his long-term gig (but was just hired for this tour, I seem to recall), but this was near the end of Porcupine Tree AFAIK. Instead, then, what happened is his expectations were disappointed, while at the same time his wife divorced him and left him to take care of his little girl.
    (The full story is somewhere out there in the Internet.) He was under a lot of pressure to "get a proper job", but what he decided to try instead was learning the one-man-band barroom guitar-man songbook, and give that a go, instead. That way he could at least carry on working as a musician. The happy end to the story is that he managed to raise his daughter this way, and eventually even had a go at starting a band (with the idea of that becoming his livelihood). The band didn't work out all that well, although musically I'd say it did fantastically.
    Here's a song of his that I like a lot: (I can't remember if it's the one where Alex Lifeson of Rush did a solo for him. They became friends at some point, so I'd guess they still are.) *To Outrun the Light* ua-cam.com/video/RDtk2Dc_Isg/v-deo.html (worth listening to just for that touch he has on the guitar - very intentional - very emotional - very something else je ne sais quoi).

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 3 роки тому

      Richard Barbieri (who started with the band Japan in the late 70's) is still active today. So is Colin Edwin (most blissful bass player on Earth), I think. I saw some of his stuff before COVID sometime, on UA-cam. However, what I need to point you toward at this moment is *Ozric Tentacles* ("electronic music with great guitar" ? It's worth the time, but you might not have the time to spare). They're one of those bands that is a little universe of its own. Seeing as they invented the word *Wreltch* I'll just point you thataway, shall I? ua-cam.com/video/XOaCtCDpfTo/v-deo.html

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 3 роки тому

      One more thing: *Cardiacs* .
      Steven Wilson doesn't use the word "genius" casually, and this is what he regards Tim Smith to be (well to have been, since we've lost him completely now). He did a cover for Tim's benefit album, but just in case you think you've got Cardiacs "sussed-enough", maybe first try this cover and see what you think. (It's not from their wildly energetic side.) It's by Italian musician *Paulo Sala* and with added loving care. *The Everso Closely Guarded Line* ua-cam.com/video/DtB4tEAesgA/v-deo.html

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 3 роки тому

      One more additional more thing: Kavus.
      Kavus Torabi was the lead guitarist of the last line-up of Cardiacs, but also has his own band (and did at the time, too, I think). Wes had to go and sing in pubs to keep going; Kavus does house renovations - and he says I likes it, too. When he's got some spare time, he's involved in things like *Knifeworld* ua-cam.com/video/3ChOeF5gn6c/v-deo.html (I think the band contains the remains of The Monsoon Bassoon - it has horns, anyway). Oh and the song is *The Prime of Our Decline* .
      (Actually his most recent work has been specifically designed to be pick-up-and-go solo, because it's too difficult to get everyone's diaries lined up to put together a band.)

    The singer from this band (Steve Wilson). Has a unique difference to most of the people you listen to. He's a pop and prog music LOVER. He... is like you. That is quite uncommon. If you asked Frank Zappa about some current singer from his time, he always said..."I don't consume pop music." Ray Davies said he listens only to Kinks albums. (Which I don't beleive) and many artists don't listen to much music because they are too busy MAKING music or doing endless promotion and photo shoots if they're super famous. But Steve Wilson listens to ALOT of music and is very well knowledged in the history behind the making of infinite amounts of famous albums from Chuck Berry to Kate Bush. And you can here it in his music.
