This was lovely it actually made me cry remembering all the wonderful times of the United Airlines of the past.If only we had this spirit today in our airlines.
I retired from UA in 2021 after 34 years. I watched a great airline cycle downwards along with it's customers (reason I retired 8 years early). I do remember the days when the airlines were great along with well mannered customers. That's just a bygone era. These commercials do bring back good memories when I was a young man.
Yes, society has definitely changed and not for the better. People have very different attitudes now and no longer care about things that decent folks once cared about. If you look at it this way, not all of it is that people have changed but rather it's that much of the world is now simply literally different people. Many people who were around 30-50 years ago are now gone, and many people who are around now weren't born yet 30-50 years ago. 2:44 - 3:02 - those gentlemen looked like an example of how elderly folks of the 80s were really good souls. I had a great relationship with my grandparents while growing up in the 80s, and other elderly family, and their friends, and other elderly people I ran across. They had many great qualities. The elderly in the 80s were survivors of the 1930s, the Roaring Twenties, and even the 1910s. There's a big gap between them and the elderly now. Now the elderly are survivors of the 1940s-1960s, many of them from the rock'n roll era and even the Beatles era. And we're talking about the oldest generation still around now. The present younger generations don't even remember the 20th century. These are all different reasons why society has changed, and not for the better. Another sad thing is that almost everyone today, even those like us who miss the way it once was, feel pressured to try and act the way today's society thinks because we're afraid of people giving us shit for trying to act old fashioned and care about values and manners, and many people will give us shit and roll their eyes at any requests to act in such a way

All airlines have changed their business and now want low fares over better service. A tip I have is to fly on United and Delta’s larger planes if you want good service. Because of seniority you get better service on larger planes.
United Airlines was primarily a US domestic airline back in the 80s. Cross-country B747 flights were an every-day occurrence. You could even fly a B747 from Los Angeles to San Francisco daily back then. UA began its first international route to Tokyo, Japan in 1983 and expanded their Trans-Pacific destinations with the acquisition of Pan Am’s Pacific, and South America routes several short years later. Trans Atlantic (European) destinations flown by United did not begin until the early 1990s, finally making UA a global airline but still far behind TWA, American, Delta, Continental and even Pan Am. United Airlines post 2020... uh, my crystal ball just fogged up!!!
It is sad UA mismanaged the Latin America hub they got from Pan Am, and once again after the merger with CO (which at the time was much larger internationally), the new UA once again had a huge Latin America network that has slowly been mismanaged once again seeing some of the most profitable routes in the entire system be discontinued. Now when booking travel to Latin America passengers do better to look at AA or DL for US carriers, CM or AV or LA for Latin carriers, or NK for low cost. My last few flights from Central America in UA have been horrendous in business class - the food was inedible, the FA’s did not speak Spanish and were rude if not racist, the schedule is now inconvenient at best, for how awful the service was we booked our next flights on AV figuring they have a better business class product, better schedule, and the fare is the same and within the same alliance
Even the way the planes were decorated was better. I miss Rhapsody in Blue. It was iconic. I miss everything about those days ,when flying had “class” and leg room and actual food if you wanted it on long flights. Today flying is just like Greyhound-load em in like cattle and hope no one throws a temper tantrum.
I was born in Seattle in 1973. Does anybody remember a song from the United Airlines commercials, probably late 70s, where the words went, "United Airlines, we're taking off, that a day, is a day!"
There are few better examples of money well spent today than paying $100 more for a JetBlue transcon ticket over UA. No sour grapes on my part. As a Sales Manager working in a virtual office during the 90s, I escaped much of the increasingly awful treatment of employees by upper management. But, due to continued devaluation of employees, including front-line employees, how could service not degrade?
I have worked in the industry since '87. Have seen a 100 percent decline in the front line workers. Sad,very sad. I hear it's in all industries in this country. There are no morals.
Nice to see what the airline industry was like back then before the deregulation forced the major airlines to cut back on services and compete only on price. From what I heard, the airlines back then provided much better services and the customers had better appreciation for the services they were getting. I also heard that the customers considered air travel to be special, so they dressed up for every flight travel. How times have changed. On the one hand, the deregulation made flight travel more affordable to more people, but on the other hand, it forced the airlines to cram more people into each flight to try to make the same revenue per passenger mile as before, leading to deterioration of travel experience for all passengers (crowded planes, crowed airports, crowded air spaces in the skies leading to flight delays, etc.). The deregulation ended the "Golden Era of Air Travel". Today, airlines make more profit overall because there are so many more people flying, but the revenue per passenger mile actually declined (adjusted for inflation), primarily due to lower ticket prices (driven by competition), according to a report by the GAO. So there you have it. Deregulation drove up the competition, which led to lower ticket prices, forcing airlines to cram more people into each flight and cut back on services to avoid financial losses (total sum of fares paid by all the passengers on a flight must be equal to or greater than the high cost of operating the jet aircraft, to avoid losses). When people complain about poor airline services and, yet, at the same time, demand lower air fares, they tend to forget that it is very,, very expensive to operate jet aircraft and that the airlines suffered significant losses (as in billions of dollars of losses) in the past when they didn't properly balance the cost of operating each aircraft with the ticket prices that the passengers were willing to pay. The demise of venerable airlines, such as Pan AM and TWA, should serve as a reminder of what can happen if an airline simply can't cut back costs fast enough to compete with lower-service competitors.
I flew UA Global First Class to Brazil, then TAM Brazil First Class to Argentina. TAM beat United hands down! Also, both TAP Air Portugal & LOT Poland's Business Class was better than United's First Class, by a mile. Sad, how far United had slipped by 2011. Now in 2020, they are the Spirit Airlines of international carriers.
After reading all the comments, it definitely sounds like somebody should create an airline that goes back to the roots of actual customer service, but I doubt it will make any money since it’s become such a cutthroat industry with pricing people always pick the cheapest service which usually comes with Horrible customer service But if they would have an airline domestically, that was a more top-tier service for just a little bit extra people would prefer to book it. I know I would the closest so far is JetBlue, but the customer service is not like this
PIX Promos & More that started in 1988. United’s ads seemed to be a lot more folksy and hokey before the stroke of genius of the Gershwin/Rhapsody in Blue campaign
So many comments about this showing the ostensible halcyon days of flying. It was just as if not worse than it is now - smoking, drunk passengers, surly flight attendants, crap food, limited entertainment. Sleeping upright on a thin pillow is somehow the standard for having a great flight? Please.
Sorry, but that statement is not true. I grew up with Delta in the 70s because my mom worked for them. Flying was indeed a much nicer experience then than it is now. Even in the 80s, it was still nice. Of course there were disruptions on flights, but nowhere near the level of today. And speaking of food, one of the best meals I ever had was in 1983 on Republic Airlines from Memphis to Los Angeles. In Coach, we were given a choice of two entrees: Rock Cornish Game Hen, or Beef Wellington....in Coach! I have never forgotten it!
i was born in 1995 so I don't know back then but the only things to be nostalgic for likely are the free food, less intrusive security, and perhaps slightly greater seat pitch and width (I don't know the dimensions). There was no on-demand entertainment, basic economy, online check-in or booking, etc.

PIX Promos & More that started in 1988. United’s ads seemed to be a lot more folksy and hokey before the stroke of genius of the Gershwin/Rhapsody in Blue campaign
The Rhapsody in Blue ads are better.
Jeez, were we really that corny back then? Also violating people's space? Lordy.
These are all sweet advertisements until the rear or front cargo door blows out and sends the plane down in a nosedive.
Not a single black, Asian, or Hispanic passenger in any of these.
They were all up in first class.
Some of these commercials are a bit creepy.....Jesus that song at the end.....
You have to wonder how many of the people appearing in these commercials are NO LONG WITH US? If you know please respond. God Bless
