Living in MJ, I got to know Charlie Daniels. He was good friends with RVZ. Charlie told me Ronnie always though Johnny was a better vocalist..
Johnny kept his brother's legacy alive for generations.. Then .38 special.. The Van Zant family is legendary.

This band never got the recognition that they rightly deserved, I think mainly it was because where they came from and that they always played in front of the Confederate flag, I think that turned alot of people off, especially in todays liberal society!!!!🤔

Not especially. In all decades you can find good music. You had Jazz, blues, soul, funk, rock'n'roll, then rock, hard rock, heavy metal, metal and all its movements, hip hop, rap.. What's important is to keep open minded music. Peace n up to the first Skynyrd period.

True true and true. Rolling stone is a joke. But any magazines or review is done by critics. And critics tend to be artsy fartsy trying to be ahead of the curb type of people. And in that vain you can probably understand why Skynyrd didn’t get much credit from them. There’s nothing original about them. I like Skynyrd well enough but take a band I live like Zeppelin and rolling stone didn’t like them either because they really weren’t attempting anything Cream already hadn’t done. AC/DC same deal. Great straight forward rockin roll bands but nothing new and in the cases of AC/DC and Skynyrd not even really a virtuoso in the bands. So I guess what I’m saying is at least they’re consistent

Im a professional music analyst. I study music on LSD and nitrous. I study hard too. And I can definitively say that Lynyrd Synyrd is the greatest American Band of all time. Jimi Hendrix is by far better on his own but as a band they didn't gel like this crew. I can't put The Grateful dead ahead of them either. Bob Weir is your 2nd best guitarist? I just can't do it. When it comes to America, Lynyrd Skynyrd comes out on top in my list. Gel tabs and blue specials my D.O.C.

The corporations had been doing this sh*t even back in Elvis' day. It's amazing that any of these groups got through to the public. The mega-pop festivals, however, provided a venue that the corps could not control. Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Grand Funk Railroad and many of these other bands found their audiences for the first time in those settings. Joplin at Monterey, and Grand Funk at the Atlanta pop festival. The Allman brothers found their audience playing for Southern college crowds at $300 a show in 69 and 70.

One of the strangest gigs I went to Dane was at The Rainbow in London where the promoters seemed to have got things very wrong... Lynyrd Skynyrd were the support act for Golden Earring... The Rainbow was packed out but after Skynyrd finished their brilliant hour long set the Rainbow was suddenly less than half full as everyone seemed to vanish and go elsewhere... Felt sorry for Golden Earring....A couple of weeks later the people who promote gigs properly, finally got it right and had Lynyrd Skynyrd back at the Rainbow - this time headlining... I was lucky to see them at both gigs and then a little later at Knebworth supporting a very very late ( midnight or so ) Rolling Stones... 220000 people there for that one.

Todd Rundgren's Utopia were on prior to them... 10cc on next.

I especially recall seeing them at a club called Funoccios on Peachtree St. in Midtown. Their sets consisted of tunes later to become famous i.e. "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", "Free Bird", etc. They were thunderously awesome, Ed King was with them on guitar and Leon Wilkeson on bass (Steve Gaines would come much later). I recall Ronnie at the mike with a bottle of whiskey in one hand taking gulps now and then and singing with fire, they were very, very tight as a band. I followed them on through to the plane crash in late 1977 and was then living in Mississippi where the plane went down. That was devastating. They came back in several incarnations as a band, but never the same as that original group. "I dig you Georgia peaches..." partial line in "The Breeze". They did spend lots of time in Georgia and along with my friends we will be forever remembering and thanking them.

All accurate . I was the biggest Led Zeppelin fan my whole life . I now feel that Skynyrd was a better band . I still love Zeppelin very much but imagine them trying to play Achilles last stand live in 1977 . Or many of the tracks from Physical graffiti . Zep was a great studio band but I heard from to many geezers that they sounded terrible live from 1975 on for a few reasons . Ronnie van Zant was just the best , most totally in charge (Field General) / frontman I've ever seen . Also a real overall genteman professionally .The band was so well rehearsed they sounded better live than the records .

Let me tell you my story of meeting the very might Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976. My brother and I went to see a newly formed band how just came over from the USA which was made up of the drummer and base player Stu Cook and Doug Clifford from Creedence Clearwater Revival, they play a gig in Hemel Hampstead. At a guess there was no more the 20 people at this gig. The music the band played was rubbish and a great disappointment as I was expecting better from 2 members of my favorite band. At the end of their set most people had left, we were about to leave when the 2nd curtain was pulled back on the stage and their stood 7 or so rockers with 3 backing singer. The very moment we heard the very first notes played we were in shock. We did not have a clue about this band it was only during the show Ronnie VanZan explained that it was a warm up gig and that they were supporting the Stones the next day at Knebworth.
For the next few days we told many people our story but we did not know the name of the band at that time
What a great surprise, It was one of the very best gigs I ever been to. We went to see they many times after this, never a bad gig from those boys, RIP to you boys, I bet you are still paying and kicking up some dust down in the Kingdom Hall

I think it can. Something that a lot of people don't think of is that this... sound has been extensively explored/covered by lot of groups already. There are plenty of newer, very dedicated and accomplished groups/artists who are every bit as good as the 'ole boys like Skynard - they're just not nearly as well known because it's not what sells today. Back then, the music that Skynard and others had was HUGE! It made lots of people lots of money. Now, not so much which is why it's not everywhere. These newer artists have their own sound and it can be every bit as hard charging and guitar screaming as what was prevalent the 60's/70's! I grew up on this music even though I was born in '78 and it's taken me a long time to get out of the mindset that it was the best.. It definitely rocks for sure, but music is a constantly growing/changing evolution. I love both old and new!

His slower leads are just gorgeous and full of feeling, but there are times he gets to let loose and show his chops. Lord he's got 'em! Technical and clean every time. Allen's underrated but so is Gary. And Ed King was terrific too. AND Steve Gaines was beginning to show his own brilliance. The best multi-guitar combo of all time, with Duane and Dickey a close second. Of course I'm leaving out Clapton and Duane in Derek and the Dominoes - a class by themselves but only one album.

The highlight here for me is “Every Mother’s Son”. It is, for me, Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s so prophetic, so simple yet complex, so beautiful and sad at the same time. And, as always, a great message of respect. Just like: “If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?”… does he mean forever?, or just onto the next town? It’s up to you & that statement… in that song… can be both happy and sad at the same time. And, that, was the genius (and fate) of Lynyrd Skynyrd… triumph and tragedy. Lynyrd Skynyrd will never die.

I noticed much the same thing with AC/DC when I saw them during the Bon years in '78... one would go forward, the other retreat back a little, depending on the part, whether vocal or lead. No grandstanding. Very cool.

To show you how badass Steve Gaines was with his addition the following year, Rossington played primarily "rhythm" behind Gaines and Collins. Gary Rossington is such an accomplished player that he could be the lead player in any major touring act.

I don't know if that's true. From Street Survivors, off the top of my head, Gary has leads in "That Smell," "I Know a Little," (slide part), "You Got that Right" (slide part), and "Ain't No Good Life," at least. I feel like the band shared the load quite well even when Gaines came aboard. Rossington had/has a very distinctive sound to his playing, and one thing I can credit him with is that it only takes a couple notes to understand that it's his fingers playing. His slide work is also outstanding, in my opinion, and on display in this video too.

Pulls at the heart strings; I grew up listening to Reggae music, and where ever you find great music you cherish it, and this is what we have here. I've just begun my journey into Southern Rock starting with the Allman Brothers nice tribute from front man Ronnie Van Zant can you think of a better name? Southern Rock is Rock n Roll & Blues' this genre really displays the Vocals, the emotion and the beauty,
touching every heart that listens, this band achieves pure magic and utter soul in each and every single word thank you for leaving musical gold for all the generations to comex

Always the best way to start my day, watch Allen Collins light up that Gibson Firebird, hope the Brits enjoyed his performance as much as I do. Allen always gave a 110% on stage, appears he decided to kick it up to 120% for this BBC show. The entire band was phenomenal.
Rest in peace Allen, Ronny, Ed, Leon, Billy and Cassie.

The original lynyrd skynyrd is all I listen too and when they did the reunion concert but when they started fireing the original band members artimus Pyle ed king and the piano player died and the bass player died with Gary rosenton being the only original member its nothing but a tribute band now its like Paul McCartney and ringo starr getting together and calling themselves the Beatles lynyrd skynyrd died in my eyes when Ronnie van Zandt died I haven't considered any album after street servivers to be a lynyrd skynyrd album

I saw them a few months ago in Phoenix, thought they sounded great! Rickey Medlocke wasn't one of the originals, but he has played with LS, on-and-off, for a long time. And Johnny of course, is the younger brother of Ronnie, so there's that link to the past. It is what it is, Johnny is carrying on the legacy of his brother as best he can.
