    So funny how the seedling with the husk still on it grew really tall to find the light, never knowing it was already IN the light but just wearing a hat :D

      😂😂😂 I'm chuckling reading your comment. And then this giant alien goes in and knocks the husk off and the seedling doesn't even know what happened.

    With the seeds in the cup and on the table, I counted 17 sowed. 13 germinated making it 76% germination rate. Only 4 did not germinate so that’s really good! That’s definitely a successful batch 😄 Hopefully they continue doing well. I have an obesa I got online and it hasn’t moved in 2 years, I wonder if it’s alive lol. I’ve been wanting to get another one but I would have to get it online b/c I’ve never seen one around where I live.

      Thank you for finding out the yield, Maria! Omg you're the best! That's pretty decent yield... I never would've guessed 😂 They're still kind of a mystery to me. I hope you get to see your Obesa flower some day so you can check if it's a boy to a girl!

    Again, a fabulous video! Thank you for doing this one- I am planning on sowing seed today and this gave me the motivation to start. I haven’t successfully obtained seed from my plants… yet. 😊 Also, I think the seedlings are at their cutest at week 2, I can’t wait to grow these! Side note, I use the same method you do, except I also give the pot a spray of physan-20. Happy growing!

      They're so funny at 2 weeks old! This is so awesome that you're sowing more seeds. Have you found that spraying with physan20 helps control fungus for starting seeds?

      Ohhhhh, happy growing! Gosh, all you need is one male plant and you'll get tons of seeds!

    That's amazing! Thanks for sharing. It's inspiring. Do you think it's possible to grow these from seed indoors year-round using just natural light from a window?

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  3 місяці тому +2

      That's a good question about natural light. For Obesa it may not be enough but there's only one way to find out! I have yet to try to grow seedlings indoors without grow lights.

    U need to keep them wet or not dried out for long periods. Also once they do get going they dont do well in extremely dry and sunny areas. Mines in canadian summer in my gh where the humidity drops to 20% during day with alot of heat but then at night it shoots up to 70 to 90% rh. (Lots of fans). My soils kept pretty moist and full of organics.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  3 місяці тому

      Ahhhh very interesting. This could very well explain why my Obesa were struggling outside. I'll try a more organic soil with that male plant that has not recovered from desiccation and see if it can recover. Thank you very much for sharing this information with me.

    Lovely video, i wanted some obesa seeds this year, but my seed sellers was all out 😖Maybe a good thing, becouse i would also have had them with shade cloth on ^^ Do you have succes keeping fungus gnats down with Mosquito Bits ? i am strugling with those gnats, and feel that each time i use the BTI, another gnat just lies fresh eggs :x i have to use it with each watering... Best regards :)

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  3 місяці тому

      Ha! It took two batches of growing them from seed before I realized how much light they need lol.
      I also struggle with fungus gnats. I've tried sprinkling mosquito bits directly on the soil (because I'm so lazy) but I don't know how effective it is. I haven't found a good solution but I also haven't put a lot of effort in it either. I have one domed tray right now that has a layer of dead fungus gnats stuck to the moisture on the inside of the dome, ew!

      @zhaezz84 3 місяці тому +1

      @@cookiescacti Uff that is def. nasty ^^ But dont you have a lot of seedlings faling over with no roots? i had it in one tray, i used some starkle G on that tray, and they seem gone now. But they did kill about 20% of seedlings :x

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  3 місяці тому

      @@zhaezz84 so far, I haven't had seedlings seem to hurt from the gnats but who knows if that will still be true a little further in the future from now. I'm actually struggling more with an orange fungus right now.

    Are all obesa rusty or just certain types? And can obesa children grow like gymnocalycium in each rib?

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  Місяць тому

      I don't think Obesa tend to pup, but I have seen examples of both old single headed Obesa and multi-headed Obesa. I wonder if the pupping types actually have some hybridization in them. But I am not an expert on this subject at all so I wouldn't rely on what I wrote here.

    The seeds may have inhibitors that need to be washed out before they germinate.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  3 місяці тому

      Interesting! Where did you learn this information? Maria counted 13/17 seeds germinated without any treatment on the seeds 🤷‍♀️

    • @unleashthekraken7548
      @unleashthekraken7548 3 місяці тому

      I really dont think you can treat inhibitors out of seed , it more or less not all eggs in the same basket scenario. The seeds will not germinate all after one rain, it may take a lot of wet- dry spells to naturally wash it out sometimes in the desert this could take years I guess. So don't throw out your soil place whatever soil have the seeds left on top of a plant you dont plan on transplanting for a while.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  3 місяці тому

      @@unleashthekraken7548 I mean I didn't wash the seeds and the majority of them came up on the first round of humidity. Are you referring to the remaining 4 seeds that didn't germinate? That perhaps with more time or more rounds of humidity that those 4 will also germinate?
