Woah! A+++++ approach. Step-by-step rock solid strategy for healthiest propagation technique for large-scale Cactus cuttings. I've stumbled along and made some of the Rookie (rot) mistakes and all your updated suggestions are in allignment to rooting out and propagating in healthiest possible approach. Even your technique of washing out rootbound cuttings and then letting washed out roots dry out and heal vs. immediately plant was a verrrrrry interesting approach. Yeah, not all plants survive and thrive with the cut and stick in the ground method. Can't thank you enough and also agree - this updated Vlog is a Master Class for the larger Cactus propagation methods. Kudo's to you for connecting the dots with this approach👍👍👍🙏🍀🍀🍀
Thanks! The big Terscheckii plants are unfortunately is not mine. I did get a large cutting from it, all the rest of the plant was destroyed by bulldozers the day after I took the cutting.
Thank you for sharing this great idea. I experimented with a similar idea for a much smaller cutting. I put about two inches of cactus soil (similar to your soil / perlite mix but perhaps more organic material. Then I poured about 1.5-2inches perlite on top, then I place the scabbed cutting on top of the perlite then fill perlite around the next 2-3 inches of green flesh. In this set up I water occasionally so I see a bit of water come out the bottom - then let it dry for maybe a week, then water again. The idea is to keep humidity in the soil to stimulate root growth, yet the perlite under the cut and on the sides dries quickly and allows air circulation. In 2-3 months I had a good amount of roots and some corking started. When I planted in soil I also kept rocks near the base of the green flesh as it had not corked entirely. 😊
Thanks for the Video Jerry. I just potted my cuttings the old way where I mix vulcanic rock with soil mix. Next cutting I would like to try your new method. Cheers!
Great video and I’ve tried your technique with the volcanic rocks and it works flawlessly with cuttings, thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge, Hunter Trail from Mississippi!
Selective breeding: You are right to partner with a community that uses the cacti in ceremonies. What constitutes a strong psychedelic experience may vary from person to person and occasion, but if all participants in the ceremony are allowed to rate the strength (from 1 to 5) then the average/mean value will be a good guide as to which cacti are the strongest and most valuable to cross with each other. In this way, new even more potent strains can be produced.
Terracotta pots and dry soil.. simple as that, experimented with even not allowing cuttings to callous after harvest and still never had rot, "obviously letting them callous is preferred though" but either way without moisture in the soil nothings going to rot, Cacti can stand long long times without water and its long enough to allow the cutting to root without effecting its overall health, when they start to root water
Could you give me some advice on some seedlings I started a couple years ago. They are still in tray and like 1" by 12" . I was thinking I would them in half and then plant the top cutting and repot bottom in a week. Any advice would be appreciated.
I heard honey is used in old school tree grafting. It is used instead of grafting medium. I think it would help promote root growth by adding some honey to the water for the cuttings to take root fater. What is your opinion? I havent tried it I just had the idea
Wow I have learned more from San Pedro Mastery, Cactus Quest, Cactus Jerk, Liam from australia man you guys are the G.O.A.T.S of the cacti-verse. Anyone root cuttings Indoors? Im curious how this can be done and if u need a light or can u just do it in a window
I have a well established, potted T. Pachinoi andthat I must keep short enough to move so, I started using it to make cuttings for propagation. It's been in the same 10 gallon clay pot (with me), for at least 3 years. I'm not sure how long it has been in the pot overall (5+ years). The first 12 inches or so, above the soil, appear to be corked BUT, it could be damage from spider mites, which I battle constantly. I can't be sure. Either way, it's not the prettiest plant but, I'm sure the roots could use some freedom but, I don't think I can replicate the native soil that came with it. Do you have any suggestions for cutting and/or repotting something in this situation? I can't go much bigger, for the sake of portability. I'm considering just raising the soil level around the corked base and/or, full repotting and/or cutting the plant itself lower to start again. I should have at least 2 more months of decent hot weather and have hopes to build a greenhouse for the upcoming season but, the cactus will likely go into the crawl space for the low humidity. I can put lights down there but, I don't know if they prefer the dark in the winter? I've kept them that way for the past 2 years and, they seem to do fine but, maybe it could be better. I live in a generally hot and humid environment however, the weather is so unpredictable these days. We often go weeks, sometimes months between rain in the summer, then it rains for 3 weeks solid and dries out over again. I can't leave cactus outside in the winter because, while it might not freeze it goes below 45F at night and has gone 15F below freezing (32F) for weeks!
Hello my friend! I have a question! I just chopped two healthy pups of my TBM clone B. I used a very small amount of IBA rooting hormone. I know TBM are more squishy than other varieties generally, but these pups have kinda shriveled and got squishier but aren’t showing visual signs of any damage. My pups are about .75-1 inch in diameter or like 20-25mm. Very small but all healthy before cutting. The plant was kind of dehydrated before cutting the pups. My question is this, do you recommend taking cuttings from hydrated plants or dryer plants first? Mine are well fed it had just been a few weeks between watering and I plan on taking more cuttings soon and I want to know if it’s prudent to water beforehand as it’s just now approaching springtime where they’ll start getting some sun to wake them up from indoor dormancy. They’ve gotten some sun on the occasional warm day, but they’re fairly dormant right now. Any response appreciated. You’re a wonderful person and I appreciate your content tremendously.
Thanks man I lost a bunch of cacti in the freeze in texas 2 years ago and this winter i lost a few more from rot..... how do you deal with freezing temperature cause they chemtrail the sky above dallas fort worth texas i tried brimging them in but thd got rot and the ones I left outside froze and turned to mush.....the freeze drop to freezing in like 5 hours. I use hard chore leather glove they feel great and the leather swing is wY better than a plastic spray on wooden gloves.... How often do you preforms cuttings?
If your plants are in pots, bring them inside your garage and put just enough heating so that it won't freeze in there. If they are in the soil, then you can try covering the tops with polystyrene cups, also covering the entire plants with a blanket.
How cold did it get? In pots they can handle to around 25 before they start dying and in ground around to 15. It's on you to check the weather forecast days or even a week ahead of time to see how cold it will be and that will give you time to bring them in if you need to. I'm in San Antonio and I usually have to bring them in once a year sometimes twice a year when gets under 25 and then I bring them back out after the cold front passes. The only other option is putting them in a greenhouse in the winter and putting a heater in there. They really can't survive in Texas in ground without winter protection, the only spot in Texas is the southern tip around the Mexico border because it rarely freezes down there.
Have you ever tried indolebutyric acid for roots? That or indoleacetic acid. These chems I have success with and it's the main ingredient in root hornone that is for sale. Also there's another one, but I can't remember it's name. ❤❤❤
It seems like you could do steps 2 and 3 at the same time. Why not cork it with lava rocks while it is sitting on the surface and rooting? Perhaps this is basically your old technique, but I'm not sure why your new one is better.
@@HeyHeyHarmonicaLuke There seems to be more roots when you separate the steps. Maybe because the air flow is better? Plus, when you have a lot of new cuttings, it's very easy and quick to just lay them on top of soil, and you'll worry about giving them a proper repotting (step 3) at a later date.
Would wax be a good way to seal the cutting. I've been drying one for a week and a half. It dried and sunk in very slightly. I barley pressed that area and it cracked open. Will wax cause block roots? Do roots only grow from center area. If wax is good I'll just do that. Maybe hydrogen peroxide spray first, dry then wax
I recently bought a Bolivian torch from a website called San Pedro source does anybody know if it’s legit I’m wondering if they gave me a real sacred cactus

I know it seems absurd to suggest, but what about water without submerging…just keeping the absolute tip wet to facilitate intake periodically…between evaporation and refills. I noticed some of the succulent community does this so I tried with a prickly pear (would be foolish with better cacti) and so far the roots are taking off well. Maybe a test drive with a PC, or is this just beyond dumb to even consider in the first place?
I set a prickly pear pad on the floor in some muck and it rooted, the muck dried the pad lifted off taking grit with it , set it on the soil and it's anchored in, column cactus form roots but need air, jungle cacti will root directly into water, I do zigzag and orchid cactus in hydroton clay pellets and water only, still can't beat the black spot that they occasionally get though whether it's water, hydroton or my specific growing mix

How do I cut off the spines like you did?
Hi, thanks for the video. Can I ask what are these black pots with the ripples you use for replanting cuttings? Any idea where I can get them.
The pot with the holes is an air pot, for air pruning roots. It's from the cannabis genre.
How much sun is okay for the two weeks after the cut? Full sun is fine?
Do you sell San Pedro seedlings? I finally have been successful at growing my first seedling and would like to start a family!

oh oh, maybe the absence of lava rocks means the soil around the cut end dries out much faster, reducing the chance of rot. Is that it?
