This cactus society's largest annual plant auction | 2024 CACSS Mega Silent Auction
Every year the Central Arizona Cactus and Succulent Society holds its Mega Silent Auction. It is a fundraising event for the club to raise money for guest speakers, club events, and more. The plants, which are primarily cactus and succulents, are all member donated and bid on by members and guests. It is one of the most fun events to attend for a cactus and succulent lover. There are no pre-determined starting bids and you never know what folks will bring in so it's always a bit of a gamble and a lot of excitement.
The event includes two auction formats. The main format is the silent auction where each bidder walks through the plants and writes his or her bid amount on a bid sheet. The bids are anonymous because each bidder is assigned a number and uses that number as their bidder ID. Bidders are allowed to go through the plants and bid as many times as they want until the table section is called to an end. Each table section is closed randomly so you never know when your last chance to bid is.
The second format is a traditional live auction where an auctioneer verbally calls for bids from a live audience. A bidder raises his or her hand to bid as the auctioneer verbally asks for dollar amounts. The nicer plants and pots are selected for the live auction, and guess what... our Boobie Cactus in the incredible @Spinesnclay pot made the cut! I was also able to catch the live auction of our plant+pot combo so you get to see all the fun.
My dad came with me to the event and I gave him free rein with my other camera, so there's a bit of bonus footage at the end :). Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~
If you're in the Phoenix area and you love cactus and succulents, I highly recommend to join the CACSS. Almost every month, there is a club meeting where we have a guest speaker and a mini-silent auction with member donated plants and plant related items. There are almost always free items as well - usually pups and cuttings. I've acquired a number of amazing plants at the club meeting auctions at crazy good deals. And all the money goes back to the club.
      That's a good observation. I'm sure there are ph variations. The MG seed starter mix is probably more acidic given that it's peat moss. Moisture retention also varies greatly. I treated them all the same rather than varied care based on the soils, who knows if the outcome would've been different if I had. But given my laziness we'll never know 😁
    Yes mams are drought tolerant however you'll get root rot if soaked at the wrong time which means water when you see growth after dormancy & only a little, then after a time a decent amount. Get yourself a moisture tester it'll take out the guesswork. Soil may appear dry even when looking under the pot or scraping into it ,however around the middle & lower part it can be very moist but you can't see it. Rule of thumb research what their habitat is like & replicate as best you can,majority of cacti tend not to grow in much organic material. Watch other cacti growers on yt you'll get ideas,if its a specific cacti you have issues you may find a specialist
    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti 5 днів тому
      @@scorpnz4433 thanks for the notes. It's tricky figuring out how to read signs from each genus. The squeezable ones are easier, whereas the spikey ones are not as easy to touch and see. I would've guessed that Astros and Mamm care would be the same, but over time, it seems Mamms are even more drought tolerant and need less attention than Astros. Very interesting. Are you based in Arizona?
    • @scorpnz4433
      @scorpnz4433 5 днів тому
      @@cookiescacti Assuming when you say read signs relates to active growth vs periods of dormancy. The spikey cacti will have lighter colors in the top crevices since cacti grow from the top, it's quite noticeable. Here mams seem to like it, then again we have high humidity up over 80-90% which may have something to do with needing less care if they can absorb water from the air which i had no idea cacti could do until two weeks ago. Cactus caffeine does vids & is based in either california or nevada & may have info your looking for regarding cacti in hot dry climates & how to water in the fall (< has a vid on this) as well as colabs with brent wigand & a couple of other dry area nurseries. Think hobbits & you'll know where i'm based & it ain't europe. You'd like it here as its sub tropical & cacti that are so called slow growing are anything but, either that or its all the blood & bone pellets with what smells like amonia i put in the soil. Apparently cacti like battery acid so brent said lol
      @cookiescacti It's definitely OK, in my opinion. I actually think it's what's lacking in most gardening videos. I am trying to turn our front yard into a cactus/succulent garden. I have been watching a ton of your videos, and it's been so helpful. I can plan on what's available in the stores, full sun/shade, colors, design, where to shop, and prices. My husband and I are going to visit a few nurseries after watching your videos. We have never even heard of most of these places. They should use you to advertise! Honestly, if you hadn't mentioned prices, I wouldn't have been motivated to visit them as I would have chalked it up to them being unaffordable.
      Hehehehehe, good question! I'm toying with the idea of continuing to follow this batch of seedlings, maybe with less frequent updates. I kind of want to see when they reach "sellable" size myself, so I can share with you all too. My guess is 3-5 years....
    I Love plants but I can't seem to keep them alive T_T I'm in asia very humid in summer compare to california..so it is very hard to care of cactus RIP copiapoa ~
      I have a hard time too with certain genus in Arizona. It's just so darn hot over the summer that some plants can't take without extra precautions. I'm thinking of focusing on growing the plants that can take the heat - like the Astrophytum. Hopefully leads to less heartbreak...
    Omgosh! This has been so much fun to watch! I wonder what amazing ingredient is in the ECC seedling mix 😆 I agree that using a cheaper soil mix would be best if you're sowing lots of seeds at once. Premium soil mixes can get quite expensive. Also, I'm so glad you're using a website for giveaway entries! I hope my entry goes through this time 🙏 These giveaways are so exciting! May the luckiest win 🥰 And thank you so much for being so generous!
      I see your entry, Gabrielle! I am so happy that you enjoyed watching this series - it makes it so worth it to put the time into making this content. I'm hoping to find some time in the upcoming thanksgiving week to do the repotting... It should be fun?? Lol. Best of luck in the giveaway!
    Happy 1st birthday!? Would it be their birthday or sow day? 😂 Can’t believe the series is over. I did read on Reddit that if astrophytum are grown in conditions that are not ideal (humidity) they will grow up more resilient. Problem is I want them to grow up fast!😅
      😂😂😂 I think sow day might be more accurate 😂😂😂 happy first a-human-decided-to-see-if-you-will-come-to-life-day. Your comment on humidity is very interesting. I have just one set of seedlings that I grew outside under shade, omg, they are the slowest growers ever. Habitat plants probably grow so unbelievably slow... Absolute miracles.
    You get any more plants and you’re also gonna need a team of watering assistants working in shifts. And since you want the collection to thrive and keep growing you’ll probably be putting the watering teams kids through college!
    Could variation in some of the mid tier soils be impacted by grow light variable lux distribution ?
    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti 9 днів тому
      That could always be a factor. The pots have moved around over time. When they were started, one tray occupied an entire shelf to get as even light distribution as possible but it's never perfectly even.
    My simple guess is that the pots with the highest count had smaller seedlings because more seedlings fighting for nutrients??? Maybe??? 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, thank you for seeing this to the one year mark, great experiment!!!
    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti 9 днів тому
      Hypotheses are always fun. ECC has the highest number of seedings in a pot but those seedlings are growing very well. But who knows, maybe his soil is more nutrient dense than the others so more to go around. Who knows!
    Where can I find that soil?
    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti 9 днів тому
      Looks like ECC doesn't sell on Etsy right now. He has his own website and online shop which I think carries the soils.
