Hey all! Thanks for watching the video, it means a ton to me. Jake has written the following and asked if I could pin it here so that anyone who sees the video can read this as a final response to everything that happened. Thanks again, and hope you are doing well:
    Hey, everyone,
Today, I was taken aback when I received an email from Sean Duregger, filled with fervent apologies for his abhorrent social media conduct regarding the publication of my novelization for "Halloween 5". I have decided to accept his apology.
Let's delve into the crux of the matter:
Sean's actions were venomous, callous, and downright cruel. It's disheartening to witness such behavior within the horror community, particularly given the unwarranted criticism we already face from those who fail to comprehend our passion. Instead of tearing each other down, we should strive to support and uplift one another. Did the video accomplish anything positive? Or did it merely contribute to the cycle of retaliation? While I believe that the video is important, and got my voice out there, unfortunately, I believe it did the latter to some degree. I must commend Zane for the immense effort he put into creating that video, and I take pride in standing up for myself, and I will stand behind the content of the video. After all, I signed off on it.
Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the negative repercussions of our actions.
Following Zane's video, some of my supporters went overboard. Frankly speaking, they went a bit crazy. A few even resorted to sending Sean death threats, which is utterly inexcusable. This kind of response was never my intention, and I am deeply disappointed and disturbed by it. I must admit that I harbored some vindictive feelings and desired to make my voice heard. However, the purpose of the video was to address bullying, not to incite more of it. The video did serve its intended purpose by providing me with a platform to express myself. I want to clarify that I am not an anti-copyright crusader; I am merely a fan who aspired to publish a book. Granted, I approached the publication process in the wrong way, but I never anticipated being subjected to bullying. I also never expected that those who support my work would respond with acts of bullying. We are adults. We need to act like it.
Since this incident, I have largely maintained a low profile, engaging only in private conversations with a select few individuals and collaborating with Zane on the video.
I am heartened to witness the emergence of constructive discussions arising from this situation and I am grateful that my voice is being heard.
Furthermore, I want to emphasize that I have genuinely accepted Sean's apology. It meant a great deal to me that he acknowledged and regretted his behavior.
I urge all of you to extend your support to Sean's company, "Encyclopocalypse Publications." They produce remarkable books. Where else are you going to find a novelization for "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", "Hardcore", or "Fright Night" for a few bucks? This sounds like an ad for them, I know. It's not. I really dig their work.
Finally, my novelization for "Halloween 5", what this whole affair has been about, will see the light of day, digitally and for FREE on July 1st. Zane will keep you all in the loop, I'm sure. Or, you can feel free to follow me on Twitter at @jakemartinwrite .
Forgive me for ending on such a cheesy note, but can't we all just get along?
    - Jake Martin

    Hey, Ma! I'm famous!
Hi, everyone. I'm B.C. Howard, the author that Zane referenced near the end. Even though I'm a small part of this whole drama, I just wanna thank you Zane for this amazing video. You did justice to B. R. Yeager, Sam Richard, and, most importantly, Jake Martin.
My comments that Zane made reference to are, well, not nearly as eloquent as he has already made here, but on my part:
I would understand if this was somebody trying to profit off of a smaller artist, but it's not. It's a fan project for a huge movie franchise. Particularly, a franchise that, while I love, has been unkind to the creatives who made it what it is. Do we really think it's unethical that smaller creatives will make fanart, zines, and even unauthorized merch out of these franchises? That they will hurt the corporations that own the IP? The answer is no. It's always been no, and people like Sean who think otherwise are wrong.
I am an aspiring writer myself. I doubt I'll ever get as big as Halloween. If I do, I expect unauthorized merch, fan projects, zines, etc., to be made. And you know what? I'm gonna support it. I'm gonna encourage it, because I know it's not about stealing from my labor but showing appreciation from creative people who are getting their start by making a passion project for the things that inspired them.
That is why Jake Martin created his novelization--Love for the Halloween films. And my hurt breaks for him and what he has been through. I can only hope that this video inspires more support for him. I also hope that it leads folks to reevaluate the situation if they think this was somehow a violation of creator rights, because it really isn't.
Thank you, Zane. You are one of my favorite UA-camrs. You are brilliant, passionate, and supportive. I'm honored to be referenced, even briefly, in one of your videos.

It’s deeply ironic that a guy who runs a company dedicated to preserving art history would go out of his way to attempt to bury the work of an independent creator.
What he’s doing is in the same vein as the rights holders who burned silent movies. It’s vindictive, it’s cynical, and it’s pathetic.

The sad thing is that in our culture this actually isn't ironic. It should be, oh god it should be, but of course the guy profiting off of these things doesn't give 2 hot damns about art preservation, the artist, or anything else that we would think someone in that position should value. Instead he values money and his ability to gatekeep. Anyone operating in the same space isn't seen as a comrade or a brother/sister in art, instead it is competition that may cut into your margins.
All I can do is respond in the same way, as I will NEVER purchase anything Sean has even came close to or farted in the vicinity of. I know that wouldn't bother one such as him, but I hope there is more than just me.

Admittedly, it's hampered by its source material, which is understandable given that Halloween 5 is a bad film, so he can't do much about it, but what he does with what he's given it's great.

You know, there have been times where I’ve watched films like Carrie, and I find myself scoffing. The bullying seems almost cartoonish, and so far removed from my own experiences in High School, it’s hard for me to imagine people behaving in that sort of way. But then I see something like this, and I’m reminded. The same kind of people who used to dump pig blood on Carrie White’s head on Prom Night have just moved on to harassing random strangers online. And we’ve *all* been through that.

@@EarthsGeomancer While I'm not too knowledgable on Halloween as a franchise, I assume the fifth installment released long ago that most its original creators don't profit off it any longer besides the company that published it, meaning it's entirely a victimless crime. Besides, as a creative who's seen some of copyright law and its history, back when it was still made to protect we artists copyright was intentionally a shorter period, because it was deemed kind of absurd to try and make your entire living for your whole life off a single property you made decades before. It was assumed you'd make further work within roughly 10 or so years, and most creatives did that and still do that. It was only changed so that non-creatives could continue to profit off the work of those who have artistic minds, only leeches profit off these kinds of copyright (for the most part). What you unintentionally do by supporting laws like these is support the greedy money-hungry types that continue to kill creativity day by day, and it's genuinely a dangerous thing to defend. Some laws can protect and help people, and that's good, but some laws are also simultaneously bad and good, helping some and hurting others or overly serving the interests of others. Something doesn't become wrong because it's illegal, we've changed many laws throughout human history because society and culture has changed, just as copyright changed to protect corporate interests, so too can it retract to protect the artists it once served. Cheers!

The only way they would be forced to at least send a cease and desist is if Jake tried to claim the book was official and put the logo of the rights holders or studio on the book.

Fans keep the IP’s going and prevent them from disappearing with each new generation. It is their hunger and interest in these artists that keep their status in the world. People like Sean are angry because his company wanted to get a bit of that Halloween money and the fact that a new writer self published it as a project of love is obviously eating at him. Suppressing new creators inspired by old works is part of the reason genres stagnate and we end up seeing the same things over and over again. What should have happened here is, if the book is good, hiring Jake to bring new perspectives. In Japan there is a massive "underground" fan comic (manga) market. Big publishers hold an event twice a year where fans can come and sell their fan comics. books, video games, and even movies. The fans make money selling their fan products of big IP's. In return, the big publishers get to review the works and contact the fans they would like to hire or make a contract with. There's a reason the Manga market has completely trounced American comics. If people are allowed to be creative, they will bring more entertainment. Also it's no secret that Copyright law is completely broken.

I'm an aspiring writer and I love novelizations of films. Last weekend I read my pdf copies of Friday the 13th 1-3 and 6, and would love novelizations of horror films that never got one. A Halloween 5 novel, especially a reworked one sounds amazing and it's heartbreaking he was bullied into pulling his listing. Bullying in any form is ridiculous and petty, especially when someone is taking their time to create something for a fanbase that would love said creation, plus it's diminishing that person's hard work. I feel for Jake and I'm in total support of his efforts
Edit: didn't get to finish the video before I commented. the slaughtered lamb had a live podcast but I need to comment on that last bit about AI taking over artistic endeavors. This is one thing I'm infuriated by. I've struggled for years through military service and studying computer science to get to the point where I decided to finally pursue my artistic interests on the side, the writing I mentioned and I've been relearning how to draw so I can make a horror comic along with other art works, and to see AI being pushed to take over people using their artistic creativity is wrong on so many levels. And I have relatives that are promoting it, saying things like "now people have no excuse to do real work!" Like....what? People who are skilled in and enjoy doing the various arts should not be forced to give up their work for an automated program. It's just sad where things are heading

Government law is broken and has been doing far more to benefit bad people and protect the rich and powerful and it is for that reason that it is immoral and we must follow a higher standered of morality and law that is based soley on logic and whether or not someone has been hurt but producing your own content of your favorite IP isn't one of those things that hurts people so...

By choosing to put his book, a derivative work, on a marketplace and placing a price on that book without consent from the IP holders, he's crossed a line. Again, you don't get to choose what laws to obey regardless of whether or not you like them or agree with them. Laws as a whole exist to bring order and stability to society and this isn't the place to debate their efficacy.
Just to clarify once again, I do not believe he was doing this maliciously. He made a mistake. As a huge longtime fan of Horror movies/novels. I would love to read his Halloween 5 novel. The way he described his process has me very intrigued. Halloween 5 and Curse were pretty terrible. Even as a Halloween fan watching them as guilty pleasure films, it can be hard to sit through. It really sucked that the whole "Cult of Thorn" panned out the way it did. When on paper it sounded like it could have been a neat concept for the franchise. Hearing about an author who saw the potential in the story and wrote and published their own take as a love letter to the franchise, is so awesome and really refreshing to hear. It's a fucking amazing accomplishment. It's also one of the many great things of what being a fan is all about. Hell, Jake's dedication and passion alone is truly inspiring. I hope he keeps writing, I hope he overcomes all the bullshit he went through. Jake, if you read this please keep writing and creating not just for others, but to make yourself happy. You absolutely deserves it. I think you did something really excellent and you should be really proud of what you accomplished. You should keep at it. No matter what. You fucking rock! 🧡🖤🎃💀
Another note to add is that I hate Rob Zombie's Halloween movies. I find them awful in every sense. 😂 But, Rob Zombie is just like us, he's an avid horror fan. And despite the fact I genuinely hate his films, I don't want him to stop making films. Ever. I want the man to keep making films, even if I personally end up hating every single one. Because I certainly don't believe it's constructive criticism to wish that his movies never existed. He deserves to have his vision, his creativity and passion for horror movies made and distributed like everyone else. Just some additional food for thought.

This reminds me of the time in the mid-2000s when I was on LiveJournal, I got into the 'Zine scene' & started making my own & chatting in the 3-5 communities (kinda like subreddits) about zines. I saw someone put a small stand (like the old-school comic book stands at the grocery store) in her local library. I decided to give it a try to pit a 'zines section in my town's library also, and had a few creators send me their zines for free to be put in the library. (A typical cost for these zines was $1-$3 + postage of appx 60 cents) Keep in mind, in that time, several well-known personalities online didn't even have PO boxes, just gave out a regular home address, so when I saw these creators' websites, pictures of their zines on sale pages, etc. I had no issue giving address of a family members business & my screen name (with permission), but learned my lesson soon enough! When I was rejected to have my zines stand in the library, I got so much hate & flamed into oblivion online, including full doxxing & ☠️ threats, all over having been sent at most 8 zines, which I promptly threw out in the dumpster (w/ photo evidence to show I hadn't made a thing off it.) Even 10 YEARS after leaving those communities, changing my username, moving on from LiveJournal (which I still feel like was WAY better than the turds we're stuck with now) I still had a troll or 2 stalking me down to leave comments trolling me about being a scammer!! 😮‍💨🤦

Interesting: "Jack Martin" not "Jake Martin" is a name used by Etchison, a horror write of note, who did pen several novelizations, and at least one for the Halloween franchise (if memory serves me), and an unproduced script for one of the films. I'd love to read Jake's passion project. It sounds awesome. Sometimes, because of the deep love and reverence, "fan fiction" outshines anything created by a hack or committee. Jake, like any artist, just wants to share his creation. I totally get it. Couldn't he just make it free? Would that cause legal problems? I'd love to read it! Halloween 5 is on UA-cam in its entirety. Seems the rights holders are really keen to keep an eye on that entry into the franchise.

that's some really disgusting behavior, and now looking at twitter it's sad to see some people making out Sean to be the victim of the situation because people took issue with his behavior or trying to justify the bullying as a conversation about copyright and not a personal harassment campaign by a petty individual.

Thank you for shedding light on this.

I’m in two minds here. Copyright exists for a reason. Is it always ethical? No. Is it always right? No. However, it does actually exist to protect authors, and it’s fairly dumb in my view to publish it where you’re getting paid for it. Anyone should know that would get you into trouble for a huge franchise. Setting up a dedicated Substack for it would have been the better option. I’m not anti-copyright because they DO exist for a reason, and I don’t think people should be able to use other’s work freely or without credit. I don’t think putting Jake on blast was the right way to go about it.

A lot of these defenders are blindly casting doubt on the big companies, immediately dehumanising them, but how can we have any progress or any kind of mediation if the side who feels dehumanised only does the same?

So many people immediately choose to publicly attack and harass someone online, knowing full well that they're opening that person to further harassment, rather than even attempting to talk things out with them privately or respectfully. It's a shame I'll likely never get to read the Halloween 5 novelization, it sounds really good, and I genuinely hope he can keep writing without further harassment.

Oh my god, a face! :) Excellent mustache.
Edit: Excellent video too. As a fellow writer, I really hope this horrid experience doesn't crush Jake's passion. It is no small feat to do what he's done. Completing a project of that size is incredibly difficult and he should be proud of it.

I just wanted to thank you for making this video. I am one of the 34 to own a copy and I am proud of it. There were so many unanswered questions with Halloween 5 that when I saw the novelization, I jumped on it. I had no idea of all the backlash Jake Martin has endured, I think he’s brilliant. The fact that someone dared to do better for something they are a huge fan of is admirable and made us die hard horror fans drool the second we saw it available on Amazon. I hope he doesn’t listen to the BS he’s getting and does do Halloween 6. On another note, I love your video essays. You’re amazing and I will be joining your Patreon next paycheck.

You left out an important piece of how to fight this....where can we get our copies? If the big guys smell blood in the water, i.e, fan money, they'll come knocking. It's probably painful to consider continuing the fight, but let him know he's got support this round.

I'm torn. While I feel that the laws regarding copyright and fair use need to be updated Jake did just go ahead and publish on Amazon. Why couldn't he have just uploaded to a fanfic website? Was it really necessary to have it in physical print? On the other hand if he changed it enough then it should easily be considered transformative and fall under fair use.
If you do art commissions and receive payment but you also upload fanart of Mario, are you in the wrong? What if someone commissions you to draw Mario?
Fuck Sean though. What a petty asshole. Really seems like those "rise and grind" guys all act similarly. Calling him a hall monitor is hilarious.
I want to read the novel. While Halloween 5 has its problems I love the movie and would've loved to read an alternate take on it.

you know of all the amazing points in this video i feel one of the biggest ones that impacted my opinion is the one about how fan artists make money off of creating these 'unauthorized' works *all the time* . why is it so different when a fanfic writer does it? some fanfictions/ unauthorized works ive read carry on a story/ world that has more to tell but that the author is just done with creatively or even passed away before finishing. There are multiple entire long-running series that had one author take up where another left off before passing away; how is that all that different (besides permissions)? what makes their contributions any "better" or whatever m? copywrite has a place but i do feel like this is a kind of gray area that deserves to be explored and talked about more.

Thank you for putting yourself out on this.
I can only hope to one day create something that others find so exciting and appealing, they take it for themselves and give it a new spin. We should strive to live in a world where that kind of art can thrive, where it can enrich and inspire others to make new creations of their own. The alternative is stagnation, a world of endless regurgitation and generative-remix slop.
Copyright has a place, and probably always will, as a tool to hold the powerful accountable. It should never be weaponized to punch down, or even laterally for that matter.
