  • In 2008, ten women were gathered in a rented mansion under the direction of horror filmmaker James Gunn to determine who among them was the strongest actor and should be crowned as the next Scream Queen. Their prize? To have a starring role in the then upcoming Saw 6. This is the story of the strangest casting process in horror movie history.

Great video... I just don't understand why you'd compare real women, with men in drag though. I get the creative comparison... But women have very different body parts, with very different things to hide. Even a females bare hip & upper thigh showing has a different feel between whether men or women are showing it
I just don't understand what sexualizing women on purpose and men whose entire act is overacting as women and over sexualizing female on purpose has to do with each other besides the fact that RuPaul doesn't touch or hang around with the contestants.

@@Em22-wtf The comparison was with respect to elimination-style reality shows that are horror themed and put their contestants through unpleasant experiences. The difference being illustrated had do with consent and the overall aims and goals of the production. Did the entirety of that go over your head? Maybe stop thinking about genitals for the moment, they're irrelevant to the point.

Thank goodness for MeToo. I know it’s not a perfect system and may never be, but knowing that there is more awareness and higher oversight standards on today’s productions.. That's because the tweets (of which there were like hundreds of messed up jokes) were pushed into public discourse by a far-right blogger complaining about double standards on speech or some trash like that.
Disney then did the obvious thing and just told him there'd be a little social exile of a year until he came back and everyone forgot or simply didn't care because no one cared much before as the tweets were an open secret.
That doesn't get Gun off the hook for that or this - but there were two entirely different set of politics at work and put simply, conservatives do not care about women's dignity or rights or equality except for the use of impolite terms that might upset their little patriarchal illusion.

The moment where Gunn tells the actress he has had film sets shut down for actresses suddenly changing their minds is really upsetting because there are two possibilities.
    1. He is telling the truth which suggests he is piss poor at filming intimate scenes and pushes the limits of the riders so much professional actresses get upset and ask to revisit it 2. He is lying to manipulate her for the show. This strikes me as more likely.
    Both are absolutely despicable.

I think this show was really more on par with America's Next Top Model in terms of how exploitative and misogynistic it was to the contestants, and how it really only served to fuel the ego of the show's hosts. I think in a lot of ways, ANTM was kind of a combination of Scream Queens and Drag Race. But despite what anyone else might say about Drag Race (and how problematic RuPaul might be irl), the show sincerely changed the way a lot of people saw the LGBT community, it allowed people to see the real people and real issues the contestants faced, all with humor, talent, and real creativity. And it's deeply upsetting and unfortunate that of the three shows, there's such a backlash by political groups who choose to view all the positive qualities of Drag Race in a negative light to mask their own insecurities and as a scapegoat for their own issues.

I remember this series and since living with an actor, I’ve learned a thing or two about how the acting business works and I think I can safely point out the accuracies and inaccuracies of how this show portrays the industry. Yes, actors are often called to set or audition at last minute. Yes, actors do have to improvise sometimes. Yes, actresses are very often exploited, coerced into nude scenes, and judged for their appearance over their skills.
    HOWEVER...
No they do not use water to make an actor appear wet, they’ll usually use vaseline because water evaporates. No, having an actor who isn’t trained in stunt work to do something like jump out of a window headfirst is not okay; in fact, it is SUPER dangerous and irresponsible. No, it is not ethical for the director to berate you for withdrawing consent, even if making your boundaries known is important. No, it is not common for actors to lay in a pile of bugs and if such a scene occurs, there has to be a medic present in case of an incident (i.e. if an actor is allergic to beestings and has to do a scene involving bees).
In short, this show was trash and Tanedra Howard deserved better.

Honestly I feel even worse for the second season contestants, at least the role in Saw 6 was memorable and even came back in saw 7 so there was at least a mild chance of getting noticed by someone and making something out of it... the poor winner of season 2 was "Girl tied under car in the skinhead trap". Yes the character had a name, no one cares what it was because she was just someone tied to the ground and barely visible. The fact that the role somehow got even smaller makes that entire second season so much sadder

A lot of reality show competitions give off a sinister vibe, but this looks like one of the worst. I would say Face/Off was a welcome outlier for this kind of show. The first season had a bit of backstabbing and sleazy hookups and standard reality show BS, but they quickly jettisoned all that and focused on the art produced by the contestants. What's more, the contestants consistently supported each other (there were MANY times they banded together to help a struggling competitor get their challenge done) and the judges were firm but not unkind. You never had the feeling anybody was being manipulated or misled, and a lot of the work produced was damn good!

This vid is just making commentary on publicly known facts, however trying to extract info from people involved is messy especially in industries like film and tv. I personally thought it was really silly when James Gunn got cancelled for some edgy tweets he made that definitely read as bad jokes, yet no one called him out for this. Like, I understand that these reality shows are often scripted, but it really does feel like these girls were being harassed mentally and sexually for entertainment and he was very much a willing participant in the whole thing. And it seems like it's all "ok" behavior to the public eye because it's all happening out in the open rather than behind closed doors, you know?
I'm not just disgusted by James and the producers of Scream Queens either, that bit about Eli Roth openly admitting that he just wanted to film some woman jumping up and down on a trampoline because he wanted to watch her titties bounce around sounded so icky. Like god damn, it was such a boys club back then and I hope it's not that bad now.

Just one of countless stories out there of powerful men making their personal woman issues the problem of every other woman they come in contact with now.
I love James Gunn and his work these days and part of that is admiring how he managed to pull himself out of being, by his own admission, a deeply toxic asshole, but Jesus Christ it definitely hurts being reminded just how toxic an asshole he really was. my dad worked at MTV in the early '00s on shows like punk'd, pimp my ride, and next. according to him, probably the biggest difference was that back then, reality TV was in its infancy. most contestants truly had no expectation of what would happen, just that they would be on a "hollywood set." from the executives' perspective, because of the novelty and because of the culture of the time, it was very much an "anything goes" type of vibe. I'm sure the waivers these contestants were signing were absolutely wild and they just didn't have the knowledge or inclination to question that. there was just a lot less clarity in general among the public about how these shows were made and how contestants were vetted and chosen
