- Gambit was a television game show, created by Wayne Cruseturner[1] and produced by Heatter-Quigley Productions, that aired on CBS from September 4, 1972 to December 10, 1976.
A slightly retooled version, Las Vegas Gambit, aired on NBC from October 27, 1980 to November 27, 1981, originating from the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Both versions of the show were hosted by Wink Martindale, and announced by Kenny Williams. Elaine Stewart was the card dealer for the CBS version. On the Las Vegas Gambit version, the card dealer was Beverly Malden; she left half-way through the series' run and was replaced by Lee Menning.
Watching this exactly at 11am EST in honor of Gambit's 45th birthday today. Sadly the first ever episode is not on youtube. I did watch the first Joker's Wild at 10am and the 1st The "New" Price is Right at 10:30am. I was 5 years old when these three game shows debuted, just 2 days before my first day of Kindergarten. Ah memories...
"Gambit" was also one of 3 daytime TV game shows that premiered on CBS in September of 1972 after a five year hiatus from broadcasting game shows. The other two were "The Joker's Wild" at 10 am eastern followed by "The [then] New Price Is Right" at 10: 30 am eastern. "Gambit" followed TNPIR at 11 am eastern.
The ORIGINAL Gambit! This is Great!!!
Happy 47th birthday Gambit. Catch 21 was a so-so revival of this amazing game. I wish they'd reincarnate THIS version.
I remember when the show's run ended CBS would air reruns late at night on the weekends. Strange to see gameshows at 10:30 or later and not movies.
I used to want that deck of cards so badly; they were HUGE and had really weird face cards.
Thanks for the upload!
"You have the knowledge! You know the odds! All the rest is in the cards! On... Gambit! A game of skill, fate and fortune! And now, from Television City in Hollywood, your host, Wink Martindale!"
Thanks for the upload. What a wonderful blast from the past.
I would LOOOVE to have a deck of those cards.
T Will Me too. I like the design of the face cards. ♠️♥️♣️♦️
Happy 45th birthday GAMBIT!
The deck of cards would later be used for "The Price is Right" pricing games Hit Me and Joker.
RIP Elaine Stewart
We were on the show and have wanted to find copies of he episodes we were on..
gotta luv it...
Music theme by Mort Garson, master of the Electric Moog music.
There was also a British version of Gambit that ran from 1975 until 1985 that was made by Anglia Television which was originally hosted by Fred Dinenage then Tom O Connor hosted the last couple of series, Michelle Lambourne was the card dealer, the programme used the same style of playing cards as the US version of the show.
BAM! 21 right off the bat!
I had that same issue with Hollywood Squares back in the day.. On the original Peter Marshall version they never showed a wide shot of the elevated part of the stage where Peter and the contestants were located.
Mr. Livingston bears a striking resemblance to actor Kent McCord, who happened to portray Officer Reed on the NBC police series Adam-12 during the time that this episode aired.
And it was said that some stations in the country reran "Gambit" eps. from 1975-76 during the 1976-77 season, so there could be other signs that more eps. of "Gambit" do exist. And also, Good Morning, America also had a clip from a 1973 episode on their show when Wink appeared on there and hosted a mock version of "Gambit."
The "syndicated" version of Gambit was actually reruns of the CBS daytime edition.
Other early to mid '70s GS's that also used synthesizers were: "Password" (1971-late '74), "The (New) Price is Right," "Tattletales" (1970s version), "Concentration" (1973-78 version), and another '70s H-Q show in "Baffle" (1973-74) as well.
Other game shows also uses synthesizers in their theme during the early-mid 1970's was "The Joker's Wild" and "Match Game".
So did I. Somebody could've made some money with a standard size version of those cards.
Marjorie was the Daughter of Mark Goodson, but it pays to have "family" in high places.
I don't think that set ever changed hen it was on CBS.
@blackonyx2002 I want a Deck of the Cards used on Card Sharks.
Just like Marjorie Goodson-Cutt from Classic Concentration.
@secondchance1977 Actually The UCLA Film and Television Archives has some episodes of "Baffle" on file (as well as about five episodes of "Gambit").
THAT was from the "Las Vegas Gambit" revival.
@Rlotpir1972 - that's b/c you already beat me to the punch mentioning TJW. lol
"Double Dare" debut after "Gambit" was discontinued.
I don't think that was the reason. I think that it is looks.
I doubt it.
Dumb fact: Dealer Elaine Stewart was (and still is) producer Merrill Heatter's wife. Maybe THAT is how she got the job...
@megamanj2004X You failed to mention "The Joker's Wild" from the 1969 pilot (1972-1975, 1977-1978).
Do you have any other episodes of other Heatter-Quigley shows like PDQ and its remake Baffle?
Bad.
