They had a completely unjustified “insane firefight”(actually war crime) that killed unarmed civilians. The people retaliated by killing men from blackwater and hanging their burned bodies on a bridge. This was the turning point incident that created heavy involvement between marines and insurgents, leading to the bloodiest battle America has seen since Vietnam.

Black water didn’t have plausible deniability. It was a US military contractor tasked with security duties and stuff the military didn’t have time for. It wasn’t some black ops secret unit going out where they shouldn’t be.

Since Blackwater was used as the main outer security for every CIA installation in the middle east and were also used as security for CIA agents during operations it meant the US government could blame Blackwater for any warcrimes or fckups the CIA committed. They could also use them to soak up the blame for navy seals, delta force, rangers, and even basic military because they operated in all the same areas and at first Blackwater was willing to shoulder this blame because they were being paid for it and were promised no real punishment, that was until congress and the senate were looking for a boogeyman to destroy...
Don’t forget, Erik Prince is still in the military-for-hire business and he is the brother of former DoE Secretary Betsy DeVos.

There were thousands of private contracters in afghanistan and iraq, and the media labeled them all as "blackwater" so alot of the crimes that were alleged against blackwater operators, were not even really in blackwater. Then the politicians turned on them, that was pretty much the end for blackwater. Out of all the charges against blackwater only a few very minor ones actually happened, and only 2 blackwater operators ever saw the inside of a jail, although i seriously doubt whether they actually did anything wrong.
