Blackwater was the most controversial Private Military Contractor, or PMC. Blackwater was founded by a former Navy SEAL, Erik Prince
But here’s one thing I’ve learned from Peter Theil, the billionaire co-founder of PayPal, it’s that if everyone is on the same side of an issue, whether that be Silicon Valley all leaning left, or that Blackwater is bad, there’s probably a compelling argument on the other side that gets drowned out.

Hey Jake, great videos as always 🎉🔥
      Just a suggestion,
As I saw the video getting demonetized for a few controversial parts of the video, why not start a Telegram group and put that full-fledged, unadulterated video which otherwise would get demonetized?
Or else, just put those clips which were cut short as "bonus videos" or "deleted scenes" in such a Telegram group where you can invite people with an invite link.
      That'd be awesome 💪

That's not far from the truth. When I was in Iraq in 2003 the locals were selling US forces Chinese made office furniture for the HQs. But Americans generally didn't know that Arabs sell by bargaining. They offer outrageous prices up front and the customer is supposed to talk them down by 33% to 50%, depending on the seller's circumstances. Most US officers tasked to do the purchasing paid what was asked like they were shopping at WalMart. Those smart enough (and there weren't many) to realize most of the stuff was overpriced just figured the Arabs were being greedy. After a while they were. And not long after that they had to be since the insurgents were targeting them and their families so they needed to pay for their own private security.

LK, I swear, the morning I went to work the day of 9-11 all the people in my office (university grads and clerical - everyone a civilian) were all in a level of fear and anxiety. One of them asked if I was aware what had just occurred to which I responded, "yes," with an angry voice and visage. She and two others just stared at me, incredulous at my belligerent like response. "Aren't you scared?" Another asked. I replied, "scared? No I want to thrust a bayonet through their G.D. throats." Another co-worker had just entered, heard the conversation and said, to the wide eyed nervous group, "what do you expect from a former combat Marine?" He and you are correct, no one has any need for the military until the bayonet is at their throats. Then after the threat is gone and they perceive they are safe, they pooh-pooh the need for government spending on the military and make fun of the culture.

My dad is a retired US Marine and he sometimes talks about how much he and his fellow marines hated blackwater and other PMCs because they were doing basically the same job but with no accountability and making 6 figures when the Marines were only making 40-50k. His job was also going through after action reports and the PMCs still had to file after action reports(even though it didn't really matter if they did) and they would typically read something like "one MAM(military age male) acting suspiciously. One MAM dead." According to my dad, "acting suspiciously" could mean anything like looking at them funny. So my dad sees them as just trigger happy mercenaries who try to justify it to themselves by calling it patriotism and protecting America, despite robbing the american people.

This is not a good primer on Blackwater.
Most of the video has Tran singing Blackwater's praises and quoting their CEO directly. It isn't a bad idea to give background info on the occasion for and details of Blackwater's rise, but he leaves out most of the important stuff. For example, he mentions Paul Bremer to gloat about how Blackwater kept him safe, but he doesn't bring up that Bremer used his dictatorial authority to give all contractors effective immunity to Iraqi law. Blackwater guards routinely murdered Iraqi citizens both on and off-duty, but no one who cared had jurisdiction to do anything about it thanks to Bremer. The worst punishment they ever faced was being sent home early.
When it comes to discussing the massacre that finally soured their reputation in the states, he opts to skip it to avoid losing out on ad revenue. I understand if he doesn't want to interrupt his income stream, but it would be better to leave these kinds of videos to people who are willing to give the full story even if they don't gain as much financially.
Interspersed throughout the video are random quotes about war. They aren't really helpful or appropriate--mostly, they serve to try and convince the viewer that war is inevitable and we shouldn't bother trying to avoid it. Nevermind that the war in question was completely avoidable and started on false pretenses.
This is the first video I've seen by Jake Tran so I don't know if it's a pattern or not. I don't wish him ill or anything. Just, if you're looking to be informed on this subject, look for a video that's been demonetized.

Long post here, but I thought I'd shed a little light on this that the video doesn't mention. I worked as a security contractor for almost ten years. Full disclosure, I never worked for Blackwater, Xe, Academi or Constellis, but I knew and worked with a lot of guys that had and I have a pretty good idea of how the business works. What a lot of people took as Blackwater trying to cover its tracks was a lot more complicated than that. Private security companies (including companies that work primarily stateside) often rebrand or do what I call mutually beneficial acquisitions. This is to maintain eligibility to bid on the government contracts. A lot of government contracts have clauses that state the same company can't bid multiple times in a row or on multiple contracts for the same agency. This is meant to encourage competition and discourage corruption. When this happens, a lot of the top people invariably find new homes in the new company or the company that acquired them in merger, usually with similar positions and salaries. I'd also guess (and this is only a guess), that if you trace all the funds, a portion of funds and assets still go to guys like Prince. That's just how this works. A lot of these guys are ex-SOCOM or ex-spooks, so it's not likely they don't know how to move money and assets around clandestinely. Most of them also maintain good contacts within the government that can help facilitate this movement.

    • @bigpapi6688

Honestly for about a decade of missions and protection I think a billion dollars is pretty small. Personally from a businessman’s standpoint I dont think they profited that much. Choppers alone cost a lot with just operating and maintenance. Not to mention training the one who fly’s it and the training for the security team itself. I think they even had to buy armored vehicles for their own which again cost them. Aside from the cost, I think the US had more to gain specially with fighting terrorist (and controlling and stabilizing the region) with the black water otherwise they would have even thought of partnering with them I mean duhh they’re the CIA (intelligence).

How is it okay for American citizens to go overseas and kill with no legal repercussions? What keeps them from selling to the highest bidder, even if that entity would like America to cease to exist? Why should we allow our nation to be even more tainted by this disinhibited army? These are just a few of the concerns. It's not entrepreneurship. It's lawlessness.

The specific event that most directly signaled the dissolution of the USSR was the signing of the Belovezha Accords in December by Yeltsin and by his Ukrainian and Belarusian counterparts; IIRC the reporter didn't actually outright say "Gorbachev has been deposed" or "the USSR has dissolved" in the report announcing it but there is the live report on it regardless

Blackwater did alot of air drops. The blood, bullets, food, anything you ever needed was done by them. If you ever watched a CASA 212 descend and scrap the gate on the ground. That was Blackwater.

The issue with relaying on one single private company (Or a cloud of connected companies) for contracting military stuff is they can decide to work for anyone at any time, or not be available when you most need. But then again that's probably US hires these "expendables" anyway

PMC doesn't have any strings attached.
Don't have to report death tolls to the public, don't have to report any atrocities, don't have to use them for propaganda, etc
Shit can be swept under the rug more easily

Blackwater did lose men... In fact the death and mutilation of 5 of them was pretty much the catalyst of Fallujah

  • @joryferrell7244
    @joryferrell7244 3 роки тому +13

We have to be thinking of the long term when considering whether or not to deal with PMC companies. In the end...it is a lot easier to sell a war to the public when no bodies of volunteer soldiers are returning home. That means an increased likelihood of engaging in conflicts. It also means increased war-profiteering/corruption. That means a less reliable government. A less reliable government means bad things for obvious reasons. So while in the short-term, you might be willing to support PMC's rather than a draft...you still get screwed, in the long term, by a government that is increasingly hostile to the needs of the people and subservient to the rich.

The bureaucracy meant they needed people to do the work fast without waiting for all the red tapes to be removed.
More importantly nobody wanted to send enlisted sins and daughters to the slaughterhouse and have to justify themselves to the families. Using “contractors” meant they washed their hands of any negative acts including death and controversies.
As for the pay you can have your employee do a job at his daily salary OR you can hire someone else to do it chances are it will cost you a lot more. Same here. Government Contractors at every level are paid a LOT more than anybody under the payroll who could do the same job.
Ultimately in dealing with a fringe that had no respect for human lives be it men women or children and expressed and acted with barbarity you need men able to match hell with hell. Your 18 year old enlisted marine isn’t gonna cut it.

When the Cold War ended Congress could not cut the DoD fast enough, one of the ideas to save money but get capability as needed was "outsourcing" many functions to Civilian Companies; the idea was the DoD would contract as needed for specific services instead of maintaining infrastructure, equipment and personnel that could go years between missions. Blackwater was a result of outsourcing.

When u say the two options for getting men to go to war, you forgot that we went to war without conscription in this war. Yes we used contractors but also a lot of volunteers. And there will never be enough contractors to replace the draft in times of enormous war
