Before the internet I was starting to believe I made this special up in my head. None of my friends saw it or remembered it, so it was like a bad nightmare. Then the internet came and I realized the nightmare was real. This was no bad dream.
that's happened to me sometimes, half asleep watching TV and something really bizarre comes on, I half-remember it later and wonder if it was a bad dream or something
One of those days. You're 4 years old, you see a movie that has a Noah's Ark re-creation in the back yard and there are people getting murdered, and... That's the 1963 version of "The Old Dark House." It has little to do with the 1932 version which has Karloff in a side character part of it.
Lumpy is the key to all of this, if we can get Lumpy working; because he is the funniest character we've ever had in any of the movies before. Oh yeah, Life Day is meant to be a Star Wars version of Thanksgiving, not Christmas. It aired November 17th.
I used to be depressed and had poor time management skills. But that was before I found Skillshare. Now I'm depressed, but I'm more punctual and timely!
I remember being 8 years old when that special aired. They promoted the hell out of it. Specials were a big deal on TV back then and they pushed them hard. And this was "STAR WARS"!!!!! So of course, I was excited!!! I remember waiting all week to watch that damn thing. I had it circled in our "TV Guide" (Remember "TV Guide"?). And then that night, I sat down in our big comfortable chair to watch it. Immediately, I noticed that something was... off. Things were... wrong. About the moment that the hologram circus performers came out, I started thinking that "This kind of.. sucks.". But there was this serious battle going on in my head. This couldn't suck. "Star Wars" could do no wrong back then! It was "STAR WARS"!!! It couldn't POSSIBLY be sucking!!! This was "Star Wars"!!! Then... the musical numbers started... I sat in denial through the whole thing. This wasn't "Star Wars"!!! But it had "Star Wars" characters in it... kind of... My 8 year old brain was in crisis. I was just waiting... and waiting.. for this thing.. to turn into the "Star Wars" that I knew and loved. And then Princess Leia and Wookies were singing some godawful song and it just.. mercifully ended. The funny thing is that out of all my friends, I was the ONLY one who had seen this special. They thought that I was lying about the horror for ages until our 20's when I finally was able to find a video of it on the internet and show them the horror! Haha!!! Better late than never.
I was in the same boat. 8 yrs old when it aired. I loved SW so much I couldn't wait to see this. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as the movie (since it was on tv), but damn. I was so sad how terrible it turned out. Talking about it in school was odd. It was so weird.
I was lucky. We had a snowstorm and the power was out at our house. Went to grandma's to watch it, but the signal was so bad all we had was snow on the TV. Unwatchable either way.
@@caligoclarus I was estimating. I don't know exactly when I finally showed them the video. I can describe that it was grainy and really poor quality like someone had recorded it from a VCR and it was pixelated as crap. Some of the scenes were so dark that you could barely see anything. I don't know what time frame it was in. Maybe early days of UA-cam or some other video site? I don't exactly remember. All know know is that I found the damn thing online and was like, "Holy crap. Remember this thing that you never believed me about?" By then, my friends were pretty much like, "Whatever." anyway. Pretty much the same reaction that I got when I was describing it to them when I was a little kid. So... I was vindicated... but... I wasn't allowed to feel great because no one cared except me. Haha! My roomate and my other childhood friend who were still around at that time did NOT sit and watch the whole thing. I don't blame them.
Malla is still canon (as of pre-Disney) weirdly. She appears in backstory in Episode II, III and Clone Wars stuff. Not only is she dead (shot by a Clone Scout), but she was a Catamaran Pilot! She presumably killed loads of droids and clones.
I actually remember watching this when I was 4 when It came out. I remember my mom telling us it was Stars Wars. Strangely enough the Bea Arthur stuff was burned into my memory and for the longest time I wondered what I actually saw and didn't figure it out until 2010 or so.
Watching this episode of Rental Reviews has become my annual Christmas tradition. I can’t get over how much James cracks in this video. He genuinely can’t contain himself and you always know when it’s about to happen because he quickly looks down 🤣. Like the Star Wars Holiday Special itself, there are too many priceless moments to list.
He was desperate to keep Star Wars around by any means necessary until the toys hit the shelves. The Kenner toyline was a huge part of keeping kids into Star Wars between each movie.
@@RealRuler2112 it's just an audio track you can play along with the special that the crew did under the moniker RiffTrax. It was like 5 or so years ago I think.
@@RealRuler2112 Check out Rifftrax, it's the MST3k guys but doing audio files you play along with movies instead of being on TV. So many of them are epic, my personal favorite is The Happening but the SWHS is amazing, too.

Yes, there is, but it is sadly presented by Harvey Korman (his animated corpse is a testament to the longevity and commitment to quality of the SWHS)...
In Return of the Jedi the Ewoks were supposed to be Wookiees. But after hearing Chewbacas family make noises for over an hour on the holiday special they didn't want to repeat that mistake again.
Princess Leia Organa: [sung to the tune of the star wars theme] A day that takes us through the darkness/a day that leads us into light/a day that we celebrate/the LIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHTTTT!"😅
I was 14 years old when it was on TV. The special aired during a period when my Mom had taken away all our TV privileges (and I guess I should be thankful for that). I remember hearing other kids excitedly talking about the show about a week before it came on. But I never heard anything about it after that. I just thought it was going to be like everything else on TV and get repeated later. That never happened. I didn't realize until recently that Jonestown happened afterward and it suddenly became irrelevant. I didn't find out until about a decade ago what it was all about. When I see the footage now, I wonder whether the 14-year-old version of me would have enjoyed it. A few months earlier was when NBC ran the DC Legends shows, which I did see. Once I realized they weren't going to take it seriously, I was able to enjoy it on that level, but I was still rather disappointed. I probably would have felt the same way with the Star Wars special.

Star Wars: Holiday Special? No
Star Wars: Acid Trip? Yes.

At least acid trips are interesting.
Speaking of acid trips, Carrie Fisher was high off her ass during all of this.
