  • Being a talented photographer doesn't always make you a better photographer. Practicing photography more often will definitely make you a better photographer. Don't blame our lack of talent as an excuse to not improve our skills as photographer, go out, take more pictures, and become a better photographer right away.

I think that you are absolutely correct Gary. Too many times we forget that creative art ability requires a lot of practice in order to be expert at whatever we do.

I once saw a quote (free from a slightly faulty memory):
Great art consists of 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration.
Whether it is called inspiration or talent is probably the same in this context.

Practice...and try something new or different. Love the successes. Embrace and enjoy the attempts, the journey.

Great points and agree Improve to increase ability (Talent), Any can dedicate and develop some talent so dont be disparaged if the skills are not at the level of talent you want it to be :)

For decades I have seen a lot people that practice for many years and never get good photos, so you need some talent !

There is a saying: "Genius Is One Percent Inspiration, Ninety-Nine Percent Perspiration". You can easily replace "Genius" with "Art" and it will be also true.

I would phrase it different. Practice is everything when you are talented but when you have no talent practice is nothing!😉

Then you completely missed the point. Maybe you think Eddie Van Halen was born that good on guitar and didn't practice when he first picked one up? Master artists never screwed up a painting when they first picked up a brush?

Perhaps. I find, though, that when people work hard at something and don’t improve, it’s because they have been misguided about something basic.
Also, there is a difference between working hard at something and just doing the same thing again and again and again.

@@RoderickJMacdonald Let me explain it this way. An example in sports is perhaps more obvious. To become a top athlete in sprint running, you need the right physics, which means long legs and well-growing muscles that are suitable for sprinting. That's the talent you need. In addition, there is probably also the mental strength to endure hard training over many years. The rest is then the absolutely necessary practice, with a very good coach. A person of short stature can certainly run fast with a lot of training, but will never become a top sprinter.

@@knofi7052 That makes sense. Just as long as it is not an excuse for people to buy expensive cameras instead of practising, or not trying to improve instead of practising. I see far too many people take a group picture with their smartphone in vertical (portrait) position. Any body can learn a little.
I think we have to see the truth in each others’ statements. :-)

You cannot get better sitting on your couch at anything.....you get better by getting out and taking pics
    Snap....reflect...edit...refine
Repeat....find a style YOU like. Don't compare yourself to pros ..and yes I'm a professional and the worst thing I see is people asking me for settings or what lens was that ...or what camera do you own
Gear does matter but not like you think ....it'd only any good if you actually turn the camera on and take pics 📸
