It is. Being nitpicky here, There is also another advantage of being lefty, malfunctions. It's definitely easier to just simply look down and see what the hell is going on inside your gun. Other people need to break grip etc etc to view their chamber. All I have to do is glance because well the chamber is right there. Umm lots of people don't look first they will try and tap rack and get nothing and then look, I just say save yourself some time and look right. I can say at least for me I feel it's easier to clear malfunctions on something like an AR-15 than a right handed person but thats just because I feel my right hand is closer to everything going on with the whole gun parts. I also love shooting suppressed. Getting all that gas right back in my face nose and eyes man I love it really makes me enjoy being lefty.

@@onpsxmember It was the tactical model. The Beretta rep for North America brought it to the class, and several people in the class already had them. Chris, thanks for sharing this drill! Based on your earlier SBS & semi-auto reviews, I chose a 1301 with Matchsaver (holds a slug), six mixed 00/slug on a side card, and cruiser ready with a ghost load. For my reload training I’m using a 0.65 full choke (from Kicks) for #7.5 shot. I load one in the mag tube, ghost load one, and one each in the side card and Matchsaver. I rack the ghost load, fire from the mag tube, then reload from the Matchsaver and more slowly from the side card. The full choke allows me to see focused hits from even 10 yards and the recoil is closer to 00.

We do a basic practical shotgun class to go with our handgun classes. Our experience with our new/newer shooters is that the over-the-top reload is both a little faster and more reliable, excepting guns like autoloaders with bolt release buttons that are down low and forward. We have them try both and the large majority settles on over-the-top. Do like this drill- it really does hit the important points. I am considering adding it but modified for birdshot on steel plates, as we use for our main range drills. We get quite a few women and almost all of them decline using slugs given that reduced-recoil ones are normally not available on hand in the store. Count us as fans of the Tactaload Flash-5 for Mossberg and Remington slide-action guns (we like that term better as more descriptive than "pump" and relating better to handguns). More reliable, secure, and ambidextrous than sidesaddles. Maybe even slightly faster, especially for filling the tube. After two and half years of doing the shotgun class, I will have to say I learn more from doing the class than I ever imagined, even more than our stock-in-trade handgun intros. Get quite a few interesting anecdotes from it, too. About that 77-year-old lady with the brand-new, unfired, tricked-out Shockwave Shock-N-Saw...
If one fumbles the single loaded shell under stress when it doesn't get in from the top right away it may fall. If it falls and one loads from below the hand is right there to give it another try. Just a thought, both viable.

Someone said Federal isn’t producing the LE 8 pellet Flite Control shells any more. True? I’ve never found anything that grouped tighter at any distance, even their own 9 pellet shells. That 9th pellet almost always widens the group. Thanks for the content. Excellent as always.
When you have both of your rotator cups fully replaced (like I did), show me you doing that "CQC" technique. I had to modify my gun positioning to be closer to the sternum.
I feel like for a Double Barrel, you could simply do CQB close, body far, reload, body far, headshot far. One less shot but retains that singular reload on what will likely be a longer reload. I bring this up only because I want to run this drill when I get my first shotgun off Layaway, but it is a double barrel.
Nope, gotta do all five shots :) In all seriousness though, I think a four-shot variation would be a fine test for a double, but for our classes, it's always going to be a 5-shot test :)

The problem with chopping a semi-auto is that shortening the barrel can interfere with how the gas system operates. The 1301, for example, can't be shortened unless the gas system is then tuned appropriately, and I'm told that even then it would likely not be reliable with as wide a range of ammo. I would love to see a SBS A300 or 1301, but I'm not aware of any custom shops who would do that work and can guarantee the gun would run. Right now, your best bet for something similar would be a Remington Tac13 converted to an SBS with a Form 1 and a stock added.
