One of the main ways a man and a woman can be friends is if the man gives up or has an extreme self deprecating attitude of himself. The desire may still be there, but the repetitive negative self view can overtake that.

However this is a case by case basis and depends on the person. I'd personally MUCH rather be friends with women than with men. And that's only because I find I click with them better for whatever reason, I'm not even sure why, I just do.

I've been friend zoned a lot when I was younger and single and looking. But now that I'm older, some of my closest friends are women and there's no sexual motivations there whatsoever.
Women tend to do something similar. They get close with guys they want and distance themselves from guys they don't want. Some flat out take advantage of feelings. Men do this too.
So for me, it really comes down to maturity and the person's mindset.

Sure men and women can be friends but its more a question about boundaries and resisting temptation. If you are not good at that, you shouldn't be in relationships you are not equip to handle. Example. I have professional friends. They are attractive, but WAY OFF LIMITS. Messing with them messes with my career. You need to have PRACTICAL boundaries. They work best than the honor system.
