A process that we use, or that Magnet purchasers can use on our own? Yes to both. We use the Magnet extensively in our critiques - users can upload footage directly to the site, and detailed personalized feedback from us in included in the standard membership. If you're on your own, yes, our core instructional path is the same - the Pickslanting Primer ( troygrady.com/primer/ ). So you can do the same evaluations yourself. But again, we sell the Magnet primarily because players wanted it, not because we think everyone should have to go down a super technical rabbit hole to learn picking technique. That's what the teaching is for. But for those who are inclined and interested in learning more about mechanics, the instructional material simplifies this as much as we can.
I think this is literally the least BS product promotion I have ever seen! It must be at least 10 years since I first found CTC… Amazing and fabulous that it’s still going! Thanks Troy!
I have a Magnet and I'm loving it! Just wanted to take a moment to say how much I appreciate the honesty and transparency about perhaps *not* needing something that you're providing. To me, that's wisdom and trustworthiness. In the very first video I ever saw about CTC, what sold me were two things: The absolute diligence about the subject matter, and the closing line from Troy - "Get in, get better, and get out". That's when I knew this whole thing was for real. And thanks to that line, I intend to stay! CTC is an endeavor I truly want to keep supporting. Once again, big thanks to you Troy, and the whole team!
I love all of your videos and the techniques you've shared are still blossoming in my playing, but this video speaks volumessss to your character. thank you
Magnets will be in and out of stock on an occasional basis as we prep new batches. But don't worry about getting one until you've taken the steps in this lesson first!
Great production as always, and will do! On an unrelated note, have you heard anything about 'pick movement' during fast passages? I've watched your video with Michael Angelo Batio, and have noticed that his thumb, index finger and pick stay rigid at higher speeds. He talks about this specifically on instructional videos and says it enables him to pick faster. Also, Guthrie Govan did a video awhile back with Lick Library and mentioned the same thing. Could you make a video on this if you get the chance? Thanks!
Correction - his index finger does actually move, although his thumb appears to stay still. I observed this while the zoom-in camera focused in on his picking hand, but I couldn't tell from the camera's angle if his pick was moving, too.
Refreshing to see such a non-self serving & honest “product promo” which actually potentially deters buyers from putting $$ in the pocket of the seller!! As you make reference to, this is just plain unheard of in the guitar gear/accessory sales industry!!! Hats 🎩 off to you sir!! 👍🏻
Got mine. Awesome. I attempted to MacGyver a couple different solutions together during the interminable wait😁 - It made me appreciate the real thing that much more, lol. Thank you, Troy!
I understood all you said and appreciate the honesty. With that said, I couldn’t fully focus on what was said sometimes because of the chicken adobo shirt. SICK! You accept payments for the magnet in Filipino food?? =)
My main tip is not to assume there's anything wrong with the fretting hand "speed" until you test all fingering combinations on simple repeating patterns like the Yngwie "six note pattern" ( ua-cam.com/video/2x9tjSLKGUI/v-deo.html ). Test 123, 124, 134. Test 1234, 4321 also. Most people are best with 124 patterns. If that's true for you, ignore the other fingerings. That's what Shawn Lane did.
@@troygrady I love you brother. Big ups, and huge respect to you! I have started 3weeks ago with 124 exercise. I feel so blessed to have you impart your knowledge onto me. Be safe, and keep being great!
For anyone who wants the magnet but can't afford it (though it's cheaper than it used to be), you can get the same effect from two tiny squeeze clamps.
Quick question Troy, is Joe Bonamassa’s pentatonic runs the same as EJ’s. I finally got ahold of the EJ 5s and they don’t match with JBs pentatonic runs
Hey Troy, just love your content. One question..how about a video about Anton Oparins picking..this guy is surely the GOAT in picking. But he makes a big big secret out of how to change strings. He tells everyone he developed his special technique what is superior to all others..so subscribe to his school and so on. But as far as I can tell, he also just uses pickslanting.
You've got to give it up for a guy that tells you not to buy their gear/offers a cheaper solution to get by with. I understand that's it's own type of marketing, but it's effective because it's honest, & we are so f'ing tired of all the dishonesty these days, especially on YT.
Yep, anything can be perceived as a tactic in 2024. I don't even know what's real any more. But we've gotten so many emails about the Magnet over the last year, and we've had to type essentially the key points of this video over and over to so many people, that we made it as a lesson, if only so we can link to it in our customer service responses!
I've been dreaming of purchasing one for years, but with shipping, import fees, and the exchange rate factored in, it exceeds Brazil's monthly minimum wage (R$ 1750 vs. R$ 1412). I guess I'll have to try to make a third-world version of it myself.
Wait what?? Google says 1750 reais is $340 USD. That's crazy. Is that what Passport is quoting you? Edit: Please email us at support@troygrady.com we'll figure something out!
First of all, that’s very kind of you! I really appreciate your attention! I’ll email you to show some screenshots to explain the breakdown of the cost I mentioned.
I don’t know how far along you are. But this stuff is really only beneficial to advanced players, or late intermediate (5 years of private lessons & daily practice) minimum. Mainly in the shred/neo-classical Yngvie style. For most players at this stage the left hand is wayy ahead of the right.. Besides nearly 90% of guitar instruction deals exclusively with the left hand anyway. If you get the right hand up to speeds in this video the L/R will synchronize naturally
I would say underrated - for songwriting. You can put on "Get Out Of My Yard" or "Fuzz Universe" and listen straight through the whole album. If we think of Paul as just three-note-per-string scale playing, that's missing the best of him.
Has anyone done TWO magnets at once? Or, can you do two phones in one magnet in both directions? I would like to see side-by-side of both fretting hand and picking hand in one clip. 😁
There may be apps that can film from the selfie camera at the same time as the main camera. I think Manual Camera could do this at one point so I'd look into that.
Troy, once someone uses the magnet, do you have a process for viewing that person's technique and assessing what needs improvement ?

What was that Ibanez you had in the flashback scene?
Roadstar II, my first guitar. I believe it was the precursor to the RG series.
You have a lot on the right hand speed but I also have a Left hand, how do I get that to go fast?
