I want to say thanks for all the good info. You inspired me to buy tools and replace my oil filter housing gasket, pulley's and belt, and given me the confidence to fix things I never thought I would be able to. In the process I broke my radiator (plastic cracked) but I was able to buy a new one and install it. BMW Doctor is the best!

Made the switch to 5w-40 on my most recent oil change and I can confirm that it helps massively with oil consumption. I'm 1500 miles in and haven't lost a single drop in my N52. I was burning a quart every 700-1000 miles before.

Bmw N52 engine is a wonderful engine, easy to work thanks to you - Dean for the awesome diy videos, you are awesome thank you, changed the oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket, switched over to 5-40 oil as you recommended, will change the solenoids and the engine cover and seal the sump at some point, but thanks a million ....... from toronto

100% correct as usual. I changed the oil to 5w-40 as you recommended and haven’t lost a drop of oil after 3000k when i was putting in a quart of oil a month before going by factory recommendation.

How about us with the n54 on a 2004 e53. Already using 5w40 mobile M. Changed oil every 5k and have had all seals replaced with oil pump was replaced around 150k. Thanks, keep the videos coming.
F10 523i n53b30 on 5w40 is perfect, no oil consumption and runs verry smooth. I change the oil and filter every year after 6000 km .
Car has done 150.000 km

I’m in the states 149K on my n51 engine. Using 5w30 for years w 5K OCI. any concerns about switching to 5w40? yes it does burn 🔥 1~2 quarts between oil changes.

I've M54engine with130,000mls on clock been very poorly maintenance in past,l use 10w40 fully synthetic, never uses a drop of oil pretty good eh!
Hi dean...I have a 04 X3 with 3.0 M54 with 195.000...when my sister got car it had 50,000 and it used oil..but when she switched to amsoil 15-40. Diesel oil problem solved..5000 miles on each change...My question is is it possible to tune the engine to get some more? It’s a .six speed with straight exhaust other than the cats...

James from the United States posting here. Try a product called. Go nmf. Friction reducer. You going to see that the vanos is going to be a lot more happy and will last longer the car will also sound different when you go to start it up. And don't be surprised that the car goes into boost a lot quicker. Seriously. Great product...

I have a 2015 Ds DS3 which I believe uses a BMW engine. It's using a bit of oil, maybe 0.5L every 1k miles, the recommended oil is 0w30, would changing to 0w40 make any difference?

For N46 the BMW spec is 5w30 or 5w40, if 5w40 results in less oil burn, and there is no trade-off, then why would they also list 5w30? Or is there a trade-off to using 5w40, I saw somewhere they said that 5w30 will circulate better and therefore provide (somewhat) better protection.

I have a question off subject I would like too pick your brains on and help with please. I’m about too move too a 335d xdrive. Is it possible too change the paddles on the steering wheel to be like the one used in the e90 335d were 1 paddle can go up and down the gearbox. But this method or mod too work on a f30 335d. I use mobility hand controls on the right push too brake pull too accelerate. So would like too keep left hand on steering wheel and if it’s possible too do go up and down the box in sport + which just one paddle. Many thanks I know it’s off subject. Hey Doc. Great videos. My 2008 530I M-Sport (N53N / 190.000km.) has started to get greedy on the oil consumption as well. Up until now I've used Mobil1 ESP Formula 5W-30, with oil/filter intervals of 5-6000 km - and I''ve ALWAYS only been fueling Shell V-power 100. I'm planning to follow your treatment with a 5W-40 oil and the Forté oil fortifier, but what oil-brand brand would you recommend and should it be LL-01 or LL-04? Was thinking of trying Motul BMW Specific LL-04 5w-40? Any comments on that choice? Cheers

I run Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 in an m54 engine ... it's an oil for diesel engines but it runs great and it reduced oil consumption to near zero. Used oil analysis shows that after 7.5k miles Rotella keeps a thicker viscosity than the Castrol 0w-40 euro oil (LL-01) at 7.5k miles.
I've ALWAYS wondered if I could do that in my 2011 f10 550i but was way too chicken shit to try it. With GOOD DAMN REASON, LOL.

I can confirm switching to 5w40 dramatically reduced oil consumption on my n52... Before i was using Castrol 5w30 And i had to top up every 1000km 1L. Now i have 5w40 liqui molly And i'm over 3000km without adding any oil.

Your car is diesel? Be careful if you have a particle filter.. You had to choose oil with ll04. If not, some day your filter are blocked.

My N54 just got some new twins. Before that, it didn't burn oil...could check it after 1,000-5,000 and it would show full in the digital display. Now, it seems to be down about a quarter every few hundred miles. And that is using Liquid Molly 5w-40.

If I was changing the oil on my M52 engine every 3 to 4k
I’d have been changing the oil every 7 to 8ks with my daily mileage. Not feasible for me sold the car cut my loses saved a fortune in oil too and then bought a Merc..doesn’t burn a lick of oil. If your using a daily with M52 engine and doing high mileage my advice would be...sell it..or trade it in.

hate to see people spending big money on extra quality oil just to drive slower than the speed limit in most places; if you need to add some oil, just **ADD** it; it's cheap, it´s not like filling up the tank !!
i refuse to rebuild customer's engines just because they use 1 quart every couple of thousand miles (that is AFTER i fixed the breather system,and the rings/bores are a bit worn,but that being the only --problem-- ...)
