I’m aware Nintendo has a contract with K’nex and that’s why there are no Nintendo themed Legos. What I mean is, it’s just a shame that they don’t exist. Because Nintendo Legos would be awesome! -Mike
Nintendo had their own version of LEGO before they were a video game company, that's what that stage is based off of. It's from Super Mario Land 2. Also, the "Throwing Guys" are Pintas from Super Mario Sunshine. The more you know ;).
The fact that they were able to get a functional Yoshi on the NES is a feat itself. Apparently Miyamoto planned on introducing Yoshi in Super Mario Bros 3 but was unable to due to hardware constraints. So it's pretty impressive that whoever made this was able to not only do it, but do it well.
2:29 - where's his tongue? The basic challenge of having Yoshi on the NES is that it pushes the sprite limit. To have Mario (at full size) plus Yoshi (about the same size as Mario) and Yoshi's tongue, that's around 20-30 8x8 sprites (of the total limit of 64) or around half as many 8x16 sprites. But there's also an 8 sprite _per scanline_ limit - which is a real problem for things like Yoshi's tongue, which extend horizontally. Break either limit, and at best you'll get slowdown or flicker... At worst things just won't work. IMO, what we see here isn't so much surpassing the limitations of the NES as accepting a lower level of quality in the result.
This looks fucking brilliant. The guy who made this mod deserves a medal. Gravity levels, upside down levels, Yoshi, custom power ups, save system, star warp system, star coin system and checkpoints and the list goes on. Holy fuck man. Good job, and good job on the review Mike.
Those "Legos" are actually called N&B Blocks, which were a Lego-type toy developed by Nintendo in the 1960s. You can see the N&B Blocks in Super Mario Land 2, specifically the final level in Mario Zone.
Cinemassacre lol I love it how Tubewings posted an interesting factoid and got 0 likes, but when you replied with a simple thank you, you got 11 likes.
i was going to mention that myself.. that was their thing before they got into gaming. very cool of the modder to include that.. but i also get what mike was saying with all the lego themed game franchises they have it would be neat to see the mushroom kingdom in that world.
you can tell she only did it to be a bitch, pretending to be all mature like young girls always do, with her made up power concerns... what a fucking suckup, mommy daddy look at me i'm such an adult even i'm fucking mad at her
While the sub-301 club is in effect, woo 3Mix! Shame about the end though, I would never have released it with a bunk start point. My guess is either a defunct start point OR the cart repro itself is bad. Lesson learned, incorporate a checksum function in any other ROM hacks. EDIT: It is a bug, as figured out by another comment. 7-6 sets a checkpoint erroneously. It can be worked around by entering another level to clear the false checkpoint. You just have to get through 7-6 in one shot. So noted, I'll try to figure this bug out.
A ROM with the correct checksums in your readme is difficult to find. I'm really interested in playing this but even after Googling for the PRG1 [!] ROM, I can't find anything that matches. Could you PM me a link or point me in the direction of a set that includes it? Thanks.
Rossco Indalane I don't especially keep up on ROM sites, so I'm not sure what your options are. I think DopeROMs had a good one, but they're having server issues so I can't check. As long as what you have is marked as a verified good dump of a US PRG1 ROM, try patching it anyway and see if you get the correct resultant checksum values. Even if there's a couple byte disparity for some reason it may not matter if the region is overwritten anyway.
+Cinemassacre @5:50 The "Lego" level already WAS a Mario thing. It's paying homage to -- if not straight-up ripped from -- a VERY similar level in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. I mean, He'll, it's even using the actual level's music from the Game Boy game! Also, the World 6 overworld music seems to be an 8-bit version of the Isle Delfino overworld music from Super Mario Sunshine.
This review was really good Mike. Usually I don't care enough about mods or hacks to even click on a video like this but your points kept it interesting. I love reviews that are just clear concise opinions. Can't wait for the next one!
When Bowser Jr. was introduced, I was a little sad because I thought he was replacing the Koopa Kids, who I really liked and missed during the N64 days. I'm glad they wound up eventually bringing them back!
Agreed. The koopa kids are a lot more fun and I'm so glad the Koopalings made a return to the Mario games, even if it did take them years. I'm so glad they're in Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros.
Just imagine if this was released as a full official title (with some bugs fixed) back in the original NES days! This is a really nice modern take on a classic Mario game, bravo Southbird, and bravo Mike for the great review!
This really does look like a brilliant game. Sure, some notable bugs that can drive you crazy, but they're easily overlooked for everything else. It really looks cool!
I'm surprised they got Yoshi in this hack, that is quite the feat as he was planned for SMB 3, but shelved for the time being due to hardware constraints. I actually would be interested in owning this as well despite some of those bugs/glitches that were shown. Great review, Mike!
Yeah, the fact that Yoshi made it into the game blew my mind. The glitches aren't too bad honestly. And maybe I could get through that last level if I entered with a P-Wing, though I'm not sure. I don't see why it glitched out upon entering though. (the final thing I showed in this video) Strange. -Mike
Cinemassacre I imagine a lot of these games were built on emulators and not necessarily meant to be run on 100% hardware. This is probably another example which if I threw onto FCE Ultra would work with fewer flaws.
Cinemassacre I don't know, either. I wonder if the cart repro you were using was bad? Did you try restarting from a save? There's absolutely no way I'd release it with a defunct starting point like that. (And I didn't recognize the cart repro you were using either.) I guess if I do any future ROM hacks I better incorporate a checksum feature to make sure they're 100% correct.
Cinemassacre I can't say if your cart is messed up, but I certainly never released a version with a bunk start point. (MAYBE a checkpoint got messed up? Check if it persists beyond a save reload.) In the future, if I do ROM hacks, I'll be sure to have a verification function to make sure the ROM is 100% accurate. You can input a cheat at the title screen to get further, but obviously that's sort of "eh" at this point.
Damn, this is pretty incredible considering it's on the NES. I really should give this a try. Also, does anyone remember the name of a Mario 1 hack that was Metroid-styled? It was Japanese as far I remember, and the final boss was a giant Bowser.
Hey. I encountered the same glitch you did in world 7, but it is easy to fix. The glitch is tied to the stage checkpoint. Just beat the stage from beginning to end without activating the checkpoint and you won't have a problem. If you do happen to activate the checkpoint by accident, just save the game and quit. Then enter the level again (which should send you back to the beginning of the stage) and beat it without hitting the checkpoint. This worked for me, anyway. If you get it to work, you should add a section to this video about the prankster comets and world 0. They are very cool.
"How is Nintendo legos not a thing?" well they kind of had their own thing back in 1968 called N&B which is what Super Mario Land 2 was paying homage to in Mario Zone.
Im playing this during this week and it is really good, not just design, but the difficulty is not crazy, very enjoyable. It really feels like a better version of Super Mario 3 very often.
Refreshing to see a mario that isn't designed to be UBER-HARD and unfair. this '3mix' is a nice blend of what we all fell in love with in the first place. Excellent find and review Mike !
the music from world 6 ( 5:23 ) is the music from Bianco Hills in Super Mario Sunshine. and the guys that throw you ( 5:34 ) are piantas, also from Super Mario Sunshine.
in the pyramid in world 5 i think it is, its because you held left on the D pad while the level was loading, you can do the same thing in the original smb3, world 2-1 you can notice the most
5:37 Those are Piantas from Super Mario Sunshine. Some of them would toss Mario after he talks to them. There's a stage in Sunshine called Pianta Village, and one of the secret missions actually requires having Piantas throw Mario around from place to place.
I beat this rom once with all star coins as well as playing the Shooting Star Challenge versions of the levels. It was a lot of fun as it reminded me of Mario Galaxy where sometimes, the same mission could be played again, but on a harder difficulty with some unique challenges added in.
this actually looks like the best mod on the NES. it would be really nice to see someone make brand new games for the Nes and Snes, not mods but actual original games. I would think theres software available these days to do something like that.
Um no. I can tell you without a doubt that this mod, and all other mods are about 100 times more likely to be played using an emulator than on a cart. Plus, emulators aren't illegal. ROMs are.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is my #1 favorite video game ever. I used to feel that the game's only flaw was not being able to save your game. Now I feel differently and am fine with it as I like the challenge of having to beat it in one sitting. Besides, the All-Stars version has a save feature.
I hope you do more of these RomHack videos, Mike. They're very fun, and I love finding out about new versions of old games. A fun one, if you haven't already played it, is Sonic 2 XL.
Mike, the level you were dying on (total black screen) on the overworld map had some cogs near it. There's some on the other side too, so I was wondering if maybe you needed to satisfy some other objective in order to have the level appear, or something. I really have no idea but that was my guess! Awesome video, they're getting better and better every time!
Jeff Wittenhagen KWKBOX Actually, it has been isolated as a software (not hardare) bug. 7-6 does store bad checkpoint data for some reason if you hit about the halfway point (I haven't figured out why yet.) But it can be worked around if you enter any other level to clear checkpoint data and try again. If you can clear 7-6 in one shot it'll be fine. I'll look into it and hopefully release a fix-patch on my channel.
i own a copy. where you are stuck, you need to go to the right while falling. On that stage the gravity is inverted.its really tricky. When you beat the game, all the levels change after a meteor shower.
those glitches don't exist in the 1.0 release, i'm thinking the repro cart he has uses the beta version. or maybe it's an issue with the nes actual hardware. but emulate version 1.0 and it's fine for sure, got every star coin
In either case, I certainly didn't release it with a bunk starting point. I am wondering if the cart is bad. Lesson learned, in the future, I better include a checksum feature with future ROM hacks.
guysafari Sato Actually, turns out the bug exists in 7-6 in any case. If you get about halfway, it stores bad checkpoint data for some reason. This can be worked around by entering any other level to clear it and try again. Completing 7-6 in one shot avoids it. I'll look into it and hopefully release a patch on my channel eventually.
Hey Mike. I love the videos. Have you ever done a video about the differences between mods and hacks? Also, what are your favorite mods/hacks on nes and snes?
3:38 -- uhh.. if alternate exits weren't a thing in SMB3.. explain how you can either get the card on world 1-3 or get the whistle, fight boom boom in the world 1 fortress or get the whistle, or world 5-1 either get the card or fly up at the start of the level and find a pipe where you can get a chest with a music note box
This hack is a God among hacks. Just finished it today. Very satisfying. The inverted music really bothered me. I didn't enjoy it at all. While the gravity mechanics were quite inventive for the NES, they were also very shoddy as far as the levels when you had to "cling" to the planets. I will definitely play through this again 2 or 3 years in the future. I intend to collect all of the coins and play the remaining secret levels but as of right now I am burnt out after playing the original game and this hack back-to-back. I would recommend this to anybody.
Thanks for taking my request ;) haha. I've completely beaten the game, that issue isn't present in the "1.0" release. My guess is that reproduction cart is using the beta version.
The fact that there's no save to Super Mario Bros. 3 is kind of why my brother and I don't play it often. We like to take our time, save some fun for later and get to know stages. it's why Super Mario World will always be my all time favorite Mario game.
I've never played the game, but from watching someone else play it, I think that world 8 might be a sort of a timeline stage, where each stage is based on the different games in the timeline. Stage 1 is Super Mario Bros on the NES, stage 2 is Super Mario Bros 2 (from the USA), stage 3 is Super Mario Bros 3, etc. It goes all the way to stage 8, which seems to be based on New Super Mario Bros.
There actually was a short lived series of Super Mario Bros Lego late in the second half of the 90's, and I'm stunned to find that no one seem to know about it and that I can't find any picture proof of it on Google. I had a smaller set with Mario, Bowser, a fire, Wendy Koopa, a Koopa Troopa and a Goomba. The characters were thick paper cutouts and were stuck down square LEGO bricks with four buds and a slit that the cutouts fit in. I live in Sweden and they sold this in at least one toy store that I knew of then, like I said, late 90's, but it never appearently catched on I can tell. As far as I remember the buds on the bricks didn't have "LEGO" imprinted on them, so I don't know if it was official LEGO. Probably not. But I am perplexed that it isn't even as far as mentioned on the internet as far as I can see. As I've said, I have no proof of it in these days, but someone should remember. Reply if you (anyone) know anything.
Hey! I mentioned this Rom hack a while back here on Cinemassacre's UA-cam page, in another video about hacked Mario Roms! I'm really glad they actually made a video for it, as this hack is excellent.
Dunno if it's been addressed here yet, but to those of you who are using this review to help you decide if this game is worth your time, do it. The bug that Mike mentioned near the end (referred to by the creator as the Matei Bug) has been fixed and the level is now fully playable (along with some other bug-fixes)
I’m aware Nintendo has a contract with K’nex and that’s why there are no Nintendo themed Legos. What I mean is, it’s just a shame that they don’t exist. Because Nintendo Legos would be awesome!
-Mike
Its basicly a billion dollar idea.
I agree! I would have loved that as a kid! Also imagine Metroid Lego!
Maybe that's why we haven't had a Nintendo LEGO game yet.
Cinemassacre
Mike, where do you get physical copies of these home brews and hacks?
Nintendo had their own version of LEGO before they were a video game company, that's what that stage is based off of. It's from Super Mario Land 2. Also, the "Throwing Guys" are Pintas from Super Mario Sunshine. The more you know ;).

Scope-Eye video that's quite the breakdown. Thanks.
BrOwN3yer0$eBUD I think I heard it on a Did You Know Gaming? Mario episode.
He planned for Mario to have Yoshi, or similar character as far back as SMB1
This looks fucking brilliant. The guy who made this mod deserves a medal. Gravity levels, upside down levels, Yoshi, custom power ups, save system, star warp system, star coin system and checkpoints and the list goes on. Holy fuck man. Good job, and good job on the review Mike.
Yeah, it's a really fun game. Thanks for watching!
-Mike
If think this mod is brilliant then you should play Mushroom Kingdom Fusion.
This mod is designed by Captain Southbird.
WisconsinWrestling KFA Heh, damn right it is. :) But thanks to all the positive comments here.
WisconsinWrestling KFA
Your point? I'm well aware Southbird made it. It says right on the title screen and Mike says it in the video, thank you.

I always forget Nintendo was founded in 1889 and used to make toys...
I love that he's still mad about his sister turning off the Nintendo like twenty years ago
Never Forget *gif of Luigi crying*
Yeah because he was totally serious...
you can tell she only did it to be a bitch, pretending to be all mature like young girls always do, with her made up power concerns... what a fucking suckup, mommy daddy look at me i'm such an adult
even i'm fucking mad at her
Now they have something to talk about today during Thanksgiving.
I'm from the future, they did make a mario lego thing
I'm from even further in the future, and I sadly miss mike Matei
I'm from even further further...yall will love this lil thang called COVID.
...wait....that was 2 yrs ago or whatever...nvm
I'm from the FURTHER FURTHER FURTHER future and you guys will love the mario movie

You'll only keep learning and getting better! Keep up the great work :)
Bro, absolutely amazing hack. Will definitely give it a try some time.
Was it hard to add all the new stuff that wasn't actually in the game?

The Mario Lego level is a reference to Super Mario Land 2, where it is the final level in the Mario Zone where you fight the three piglets.

Also the map music from the beach world is bianco hills from mario sunshine
This looks really awesome. Especially with all the nods to Sunshine.
Im playing this during this week and it is really good, not just design, but the difficulty is not crazy, very enjoyable. It really feels like a better version of Super Mario 3 very often.

I love that this mod includes things from the Gameboy games, like the bunny carrot and the N&B blocks from Super Mario Land 2. That's very clever.
the music from world 6 ( 5:23 ) is the music from Bianco Hills in Super Mario Sunshine. and the guys that throw you ( 5:34 ) are piantas, also from Super Mario Sunshine.
I love hearing all those remixed music tracks taken from other Mario games! 6 Golden Coins, Sunshine, Galaxy...
I'm glad you got to review this, it's a pretty overlooked title. Fantastic review.
in the pyramid in world 5 i think it is, its because you held left on the D pad while the level was loading, you can do the same thing in the original smb3, world 2-1 you can notice the most
I followed the guy's channel while this was being worked on, I was so excited seeing the updates. It's a really in depth hack.
What a crazy mix of all our favorite Mario Bros. games!
"Created by Captain Southbird"
NO SHIT. I love that dude's videos. Didn't know he did ROM hacks.
love the star coin icons in the menu, as you said its the best part of the new games and id love to have them in the old games!
Mike is not dicking around with these reviews. Keep it up man.
That's a damn well done Super Mario Bros. 3 mod! Nice review Mike!
Interesting. Many new forms in power ups, and Toad. Quite challenging.

Devin, a homebrew, hack, or mod is normally on a cartridge. It would be quite a surprise to see an emulator of this. Plus, emulators are illegal.
Um no. I can tell you without a doubt that this mod, and all other mods are about 100 times more likely to be played using an emulator than on a cart. Plus, emulators aren't illegal. ROMs are.
You got everything backwards.
TheBlimpFruit True. Thanks for pointing that out!
... checkpoints were one of THE best features added!!
Super Mario Bros. 3 is my #1 favorite video game ever. I used to feel that the game's only flaw was not being able to save your game. Now I feel differently and am fine with it as I like the challenge of having to beat it in one sitting. Besides, the All-Stars version has a save feature.
I have never EVER heard about "Super Mario Bros. 3Mix" mod before. It looks way cool though =)
The "guys" tossing you were piantas I think and the lego land is from Mario Land 2.
This is the kind of mod I like. Full on effort to creating new obstacles and enemies, or "intermixing" different games.
this is just one step closer for a Vinesauce/AVGN crossover
Hahha was eatching this randomly and just hear capt southbird and got excited i talk to him on chat hahahahaha
Do these more often Mike, there great and always getting better.
I'm happy to let you know Lego Mario is now a thing!
That stage with the people throwing you around on rooftops is a Super Mario Sunshine reference :)
Looks like Mike has started a homebrew collection. thats pretty cool.
I hope you do more of these RomHack videos, Mike. They're very fun, and I love finding out about new versions of old games.
A fun one, if you haven't already played it, is Sonic 2 XL.
Whoa, those custom lego bits are cool.
skabcat242 Thanks. My favorite one I have is Kefka from Final Fantasy 3 (SNES)

"we ended up getting into a huge fight over it. Then I threw my sister into a woodchipper, and used the mulch as lawn fertilizer"
Mike, the level you were dying on (total black screen) on the overworld map had some cogs near it. In the Gameboy game "6 Golden Coins", there are LEGO-inspired levels. So it has happened before.
Actually it is N&B blocks, something Nintendo made to compete with lego long ago.
I love how you guys are into the rom hacks these days :D
Maybe you had an old version? My world 7-6 didn't do that, but maybe hold right when you start to initiate the gravity?
lol yea we were able to record more footage and show past that point. I have it scheduled to post this Saturday at 5 PM.
Awesomeness. I'm still meaning to come back and finish collecting all the coins and comet coins to unlock the final world.
Jeff Wittenhagen KWKBOX Actually, it has been isolated as a software (not hardare) bug. 7-6 does store bad checkpoint data for some reason if you hit about the halfway point (I haven't figured out why yet.) The guys throwing you off rooftops are the piantas from sunshine
3:25 Booze Woods was always my favorite!
Wow there’s now LEGO Mario 5 years later
Captain Southbird is the guy who does Vinesauce Tomodachi Life stream edits. Awesome dude.
i own a copy. where you are stuck, you need to go to the right while falling. On that stage the gravity is inverted.its really tricky. When you beat the game, all the levels change after a meteor shower.
Some glaring glitches aside, this game looks like a lot of fun
those glitches don't exist in the 1.0 release, i'm thinking the repro cart he has uses the beta version. or maybe it's an issue with the nes actual hardware. but emulate version 1.0 and it's fine for sure, got every star coin
Captain Southbird Exactly what I did.
John Mitchell 7-6 bug is fixed in Rev 2
Hey Mike. I love the videos. Have you ever done a video about the differences between mods and hacks? Also, what are your favorite mods/hacks on nes and snes?
LOOKS FUN! Im a old school gamer! Going to have to try & find these games!
mike is a great sidekick, keep up the good work guys
Sato what's the Konami code for ? It says use it !
thank you very much to help us to found that specific type of games
Holy shit, this is probably the most impressive ROM modification I've ever seen, thanks for pointing it out! :O
Man, I so wanna play that version of Super Mario 3.. That looks so cool...
The fact that there's no save to Super Mario Bros. 3 is kind of why my brother and I don't play it often. We like to take our time, save some fun for later and get to know stages. it's why Super Mario World will always be my all time favorite Mario game.
The Lego world looks really similar to the giant robot Mario in SML2.
The guys who chuck you around are a reference to Super Mario Sunshine, they're Piantas called "The Chucksters".
Nice foreshadowing with the Nintendo Lego sets!
THese reviews really are outstanding.
@Blue How come?
This game look's awesome, I think i'm going to go play it xD
***** And toad did get in, in peach, because he looks like a d*ck.... *****
and ***** did not get involved because he dosn't live in the mushroom kindom
***** no way.
Where can u get this game ?
Yoshi Plush Well, i'm not sure, I tryed to get it on an emulator, but I can't find a rom.
I knew they could push the NES further. It's nice to see people still experimenting with hardware.
There is nothing that can eliminate possible fights with my sibling.
8-bit Galaxy music in the space level. Oh my god.
Watching this in 2021 and it's funny how you mentioned the Lego Mario should definitely be a thing because my son absolutely loves it now.
"Captain Southbird"
Hey, I regconize that name!!!

Me: did he just predicted future!?!?
Also me: 2020 anyone???
Mike agrees with me about the Koopa Kids. They're way more interesting than Bowser Jr.
Wow, thank you, Mike; this looks incredible, and somehow, I've never heard of it!
This game is awesome, I was so happy to see Yoshi on NES !!!
Miyamoto be like "We can't make yoshi on NES" this guy be like, "Yeah, you can".
I need more of Mike
The bug that Mike mentioned near the end (referred to by the creator as the Matei Bug) has been fixed and the level is now fully playable (along with some other bug-fixes)
lol the end was cute. stuck in the frickin ceiling
Getting damaged by flipping the gate on a koopa also happened in the SNES version

5:37 Those are CHUCKSTER PIANTAS! They are from Sunshine!
I wonder, did Southbird actually end up fixing that issue on World 7 Stage 6 that was shown at 10:10?
This seems to be a very promising home brew. Thanks for sharing Mike
Bowser Jr. is definetely older than Mario Sunshine. He was the final Boss of Yoshi's Story for N64.
