13:03 I think they need to clarify whether this works with the bladesinger’s extra attack feature, because if you cast a cantrip “with a casting time of one action” as part of that attack action, it should RAW trigger the bonus action attack, but that’s not obvious to a casual reader. I think it mostly makes up for losing the bonus damage on your attacks, but then again you might have taken Dual Wielder or PAM using a quarterstaff/spear earlier on, making this feature kinda redundant. In any case, it should be clarified whether this feature is meant to just let you whack somebody after casting fireball or if it can be part of your attack routine
Great catch! I didn't notice that at first. Definitely an upgrade without considering any feats. But also great for spells like conjure minor elementals and spirit shroud (when used as intended).
@@pederw4900 Honestly I don't think that works for a few reasons. - How would you make it work? It's originally a 2nd level spell exclusive to a half caster that provides some scaling by spell level improvement. The fighter wouldn't have spell slots so it would need to be fueled by another resource so you'd have to make a modified format anyways - I honestly think cavalier might be more poorly designed than old PDK. PDK wasn't good as it was tied to very limited resources (that got a bit better frequency was in the new edition) but Cavelier is sort of a mess. The fantasy of cavalry is to ride on a horse or similar creature into battle and then to make a crushing blow before targeting someone else. Cavalier really only has 1 feature dedicated to a mount with the others having some minor synergies (unwavering, warding, ferocious more due to increased movement). Additionally I mentioned the charge as central but what cavalier mainly rewards you for is trying to be a tank. It has one of the few taunts in the game, fending strikes (to self or to an ally nearby), hold the line (although I would note that this has bad synergy with sentinel and thus you kind of have to wait to get to 10), and vigilant defender really rewarding you for getting into the middle of all the enemies to hopefully have them target you or suffer you making reaction attacks (but that's at 18). It also has a lot of X modifier per long rest features and the taunt I mentioned really only works when they are within 5 feet of you. Honestly I think the idea of a dragon knight is fine but I'm saddened to see them sort of give up on PDK being a kind of rallying oriented fighter and for seemingly rectoning lore (I don't think retcons are bad, they can improve things but I know plenty of times I've thought it was for the worse. I don't have that level of connection to FR and I've seen some mixed messages on how much history PDK really had but I know that they've been around for decades at this point in some form and it's been sort of consistent)
@ oh definitely, cavalier needs a full rework. I think they could let you upcast Find Steed at a 1/3 caster sort of rate (2nd level at 7, 3rd at 13, 4th at 19) and just bake that right into the feature, or they could just take the text from Find Steed and make it a class feature that scales with level and pull out the planar aspects of the otherworldly steed statblock. Then they need to reorient it to be more of a kiting striker than a tank
@@brycejordan8987 agreed, I actually really liked the design of the old pdk it a just needed some buffs to make it's play style work well enough to consider using, as it was it was just short of being featureless in 2014 because it all was tied to extremely limited resources
@@foolycoolytheband Honestly the funny part is that the part they kept is potent. The 10th level rallying surge is overall a net improvement. It's still on a very limited feature and the range drop hurts but in exchange it works on 3 people and instead of just being a reaction attack (good especially with a rogue) it can also let allies reposition without taking attacks (nice for classes that don't really use weapons).
Regarding the Storm Soul and Swashbuckler, the Eberron book that's also coming out later this year is going to include airship combat rules. I wouldn't be surprised if the Storm Soul and Swashbuckler were in the Eberron book instead of the Forgotten Realms book for that reason.
I actually think the Purple Dragon Knight is much stronger than then the Drakewarden because it is a Fighter subclass. I believe Rangers should have stronger pets than other classes, but I think this subclass is using a strong base Class, so it won't be weak in comparison. I also think because Fighters get so many feats that I don't think the mental stat will be an issue at all. I will say I don't like that, it's intelligence. This is the 3rd Intelligence based Fighter along with Eldritch Knight and Psi Warrior. I think Charisma fits so much better thematically. I understand it's probably because it's an Amethyst Dragon, but I don't like it. I also don't like the resistance to Force Damage. I think they have intentionally removed Force Damage Resistance from other Subclasses, and they should keep it that way (I am ok if the Dragon gets it but not the player).
I do think the dragon rider fighter subclass is cool as hell, and if I’m being honest I do not care about the lore even 5% as much as I care about the game mechanics, but they didn’t have to change the lore to recycle an astonishingly weak subclass from an old publication. Re-print the PDK leaning into its Banneret style, and give us a better Cavalier (maybe just give it the Find Steed spell), then maybe give us a dragon rider later on. The split between dragon rider and ambassador doesn’t work for me, and I’ll put that in my survey response when that comes out

The monk could still get one in another ua but it probably won't be sun soul since most of its features were cannibalized by dragon and elements monk other than the basic bolt.
A couple of odds and ends: 1) They need to avoid giving out AC bonuses (looking at the Genie Paladin, and to a lesser extent the Bladesinger) and instead do alternative AC calculations. The alternative AC calculation should be about the same AC if you dont' multiclass, but a bonus to AC is exploitable in multiclass (e.g., Draconic Sorcerer getting to add their CHA twice to AC). 2) From a flavor perspective, I hate that the Scion of the Three Rogue can hot swap gods. This is not one cult, but cults of three gods that coordinate. They should make you choose and then maybe add another little feature for each god as compensation. 3) Knowledge Cleric's first feature needs reworked. If you wan to play a know it all, you might have all the knowledge skills at level 1 and you definitely picked your favorite ones at level 1 meaning you don't get expertise in them. It's like they forgot that you get your subclass at level 3 now. 4) Fighters get the most feats, so they're really going to be the only class that can easily get all the feats you want to be amazing on a mount with a lance (mounted combatant, GWM, polearm master, plus all the feats you wanted anyways). Agreed that the flavor is completely wrong.
I haven't looked at all of them, but I was really hoping for an overhauled banneret/pdk that was an off support. Also, I was hoping for battlerager to return. The new PDK made me think they should just do a dragon knight subclass. I also like some people's idea of retooling it into a cavalier that has a bonded mount.
I was very disappointed with the pdk don't get me wrong I'd still play it because dragon riding is cool, but , this would have been better in my opinion if they focused on the lore and updated the mechanics. We don't need another drakewarden if each class is just going to get rehashes of each others subclasses, can I get a gish sorcerer next please. But like I said I'll still play the purple dragon knight just for the cool factor and that the fighter is a better chassis than a ranger for being able to get more feats

The Blinded condition is all they have now that is not literally just non functional or redundant when compaired to a better subclass. They need a BIG rework.
You slightly undersold the PDK’s dragon. The Dragon’s PB is equal to the Fighter’s, because it’s a variable number it’s not factored into its Rend Attack’s hit chance. Once you add its PB in it actually has fairly reliable accuracy. Unfortunately it still deals atrocious damage.

I agree completely regarding the theme of the Purple Dragon Knight. It's a cool subclass mechanically, but it absolutely does not mesh with the lore AT ALL. I'll point out that the capstone may be better than you're giving it credit for. Force damage is the new cool thing in the updated Monster Manual according to those who have an advance copy, so resistance is highly beneficial, especially at high levels when it's common among monsters (apparently).

Which is the fantasy delivered by the new UA. Sometimes lore gets changed for various reasons. The PDK being weak was not the only reason the subclass was forgotten by most players. There have been other weak subclasses that were picked up regardless because they sold a fantasy. The PDK had a dissonance between its name, lore and mechanics that made it one of the most forgettable player options in the history of 5e.
