In general, agree 100%. But.. You go through this "qualifying statement" a couple times about groups or games that are "rules light" or "narrative based." These groups don't need to be qualified, as the conditions that make them different is that they're simply ignoring part of all of the rules. ANY case where the rules are ignored is already outside of consideration, where making decisions within the rules is the entire consideration. They're not playing an alternative ruleset or special situation. They're simply stepping outside of the rules, in many cases for very good reasons. But that's also the reason that they don't need to be qualified as a separate consideration.

I like the party being full of variety but I like it when we have no healer or no heavy armor people and it changes the dynamic of the campaign

All were one shots but I have run an all paladin party, an all barbarian party (both of those at lvl 20 and a lvl 1 one shot with the A-Men combo (all cleric)

I love the idea of a platemail clad great weapon warrior with a dancing fighting style. A super agile ballerina hitting foes with a great axe or maul, greatsword or spear.

I like the idea of not being able to level up until you achieve some great feat like in AD&D when you reach 9th level your DM has the option to hold your 9th level from you until you become a lord (own land) which breeds adventure of course you can remove this for games where it doesn’t fit but you can keep it and have it really impact the game where the title fighter lord means something

If 5e wasn't restricted to just half the sword coast. We'd have the proper fluff for the purple dragons and the war wizards of cormyr

I think this class might work well thematically with the Mordenkainen Hobgoblin. Getting the BA help with extra features, including more healing, really boosts the feeling of a battlefield commander.

I suggested a friend play this for a campaign and just revamped it so that it shares the actual full effects with the party. So 5.5 was a massive buff for that at least.

From the basic rules: "Occasionally, your proficiency bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before you apply it. For example, the rogue’s Expertise feature doubles the proficiency bonus for certain ability checks. If a circumstance suggests that your proficiency bonus applies more than once to the same roll, you still add it only once and multiply or divide it only once."

I use everything and allow pre-errata, no multiclassing

Honestly it's better but still feels underwhelming because it relies on second wind. I did manage to get a solid character with a one shot with origin healer, 5 levels in swords bard 7 in PDK and eldritch adept for pact of the blade. It at least fit well for a field medic type but if I were trying to optimize I probably would have had more success with a swords/celestial warlock multi.

I always thought it would be interesting to run an entire party of Purple Dragon Knights. They wouldn't have much diversity, but they'd be one of the most durable groups around.

Kobold is best leader and is also small. 1 level dip into Warlock gives you pact of the chain invocation, at will casting of Find Familiar. Find Familiar now lets you summon any CR 0 beast. Summon a goat, a CR 0 medium beast with a 40ft land speed and 30ft climb speed. Ride the medium goat because you are a small kobold. Resummon your goat mount at will if it dies. Win at life.

Without a doubt devotion paladin makes a good multiclass dip to get that holy knight feel you'll always have two important support orientated paladin spells on hand protection from good and evil and shield of faith for when you need them you have an amazing channel divinity in the form of sacred weapon for when talk is over and you need to convert that Charisma score into surefire attacks and since channel divinity comes back on a short rest it plays into some of your best fighter abilities which majority of them also come back to you after a short break allowing you to pull off your stuff more often than not

The problem with the Purple Dragon Knight is that it basically saddles your core class features with secondary bits to support your party... And doesn't do anything else. With the 2024 base Fighter, it's so much better because you get more uses of your class features, so you're not trying to hold onto them _just_ in case the team needs them. And weapon masteries help the class feel more full featured overall. Plus, since your Second Wind lets you move up to half your speed as well, it's gotten much better and makes you feel more like a proper commander/bannerman. These things help soothe the fact that you don't have a 14th level subclass capstone.

I really liked this video. I haven't thought about the Purple Dragon Knight in ages, and appreciate your thoughtful approach. One meta comment though about the video itself is that I think you were talking quite fast in places. I normally listen to videos at 1.5x to 2x speed, and there were a couple places where I had a little trouble following you at 1x speed.

You kind of skipped a major change in 2024 spellcasting, that affects EKs more than most casters. Anyone with spells can now cast rituals. Given the extremely limited number of slots, and the fact that most rituals are level 1, this would give an EK a lot more out of combat utility, and potentially take some of that load off of the other casters.

While the kobald's draconic cry fits the theme better, I think I'd go dragonborn for the breath weapon attack, giving you a small aoe effect that if you catch enough people could really help out , and since it replaces part of an attack and not the entire attack you can still hit the enemies with a stick.

I'm thinking I'd be a dual wielding Valkyrie with a devotion to the glory of Odin and war. I'm thinking aura like the Peter Jackson Galadriel version of a corrupted Queen warrior. I'm thinking Oaths, like the goddess of Styx.

Morale was an important part of monster stat blocks! It’s a huge miss that it was abandoned. Might I suggest that the bloodied condition is your new morale failure? Once an enemy is bloodied or outright incapacitated or killed, the others flee! Makes those low level goblin encounters more fun! “You killed Enky! You B@st3rd!

if you take 2 pally levels 1st and get those proficiencies and spell slots, you now have lvl 1 spell slots to concentrate on hex for your attacks. dao genie warlock is probably better choice than hexblade because it gives you bludgeoning resistance, and a free short rest when you sleep in your magic lamp. not to mention wish spell later. should warlocks go melee, or focus on ranged damage with EBs? i personally like 2 pala, 1 warlock, rest valor bard, for magical secrets giving conjure minor elementals for obscene damage, great tanking, out of combat utility and great healing. 2 fighter would be better if you can get great stats in str and char since dual wielding with nick for this build is best, but mostly focusing on 1 stat seems to be the norm. if you get spell sniper and metamagic adept, you can bonus action your CME, then do 1 attack, and cast a cantrip instead of a 2nd attack, which at this point would be 3 EBs for a total of 4 attacks triggering CME damage. after turn 1, you can use your bonus action to trade a lvl 2 spell slot for more sorcery points in case you drop your concentration on CME, and after that do things like give out bardic inspirations/mass healing word/divine smites/etc while still topping the dps :P

I imagine the man-hag could go for more of the weird hermit that lives in the woods so maybe names like ‘Ol’ Billy’ or ‘stinking Jimmy’ for weird old bog man

I am now imagining the male Hag as this grizzled, off-the-grid doomsday prepper that insists on being called "gramps", makes moonshine, and is rumored to feed people who trespass on his lawn to his pigs, but is the go-to guy if you need stuff that just talking about it will get the ATF to put you on a watchlist if you're lucky.

I am looking at playing a moon Druid for my next long term campaign and was really hoping they would expand the versatility on the beast side. Like CR 1 is fine but I feel like CR 2 needs some much more interesting options. When you have 3 whole levels to play in the CRs, I want to explore them to their fullest! (No, the moon druid is not weak now but it would just be a nice to have)

I played one f1 cw14 with a novice dm and it's so fun but I didn't feel anymore OP then all wizards. Take silvery barbs and you can affect every part of combat but very resource limited so I would usely save one for when a party member got hit with a crit. So not a superman especially if you do more combats per day but super fun

Love the vid! Wanted to confirm some details for the 2024 Monster Manual for you based on research I’ve done all over the internet. 1. We are getting two new goblin stat blocks: the Goblin Minion (supposed to be the lowest CR version) and the Goblin Hexer (a spellcaster ported over from 4e D&D). 2. They have confirmed that we’re getting an Arch-Hag stat block, but no word yet on other Arch Fey. 3. Vampires are supposed to have the ability to Dash/Disengage as a Bonus Action now. Don’t know if other creature have also gotten some new retreat mechanics. 4. Happy to hear that the Tarrasque has a ranged attack now! Supposedly it’s a 150-foot AOE that deals Thunder damage.

My berserker is a fire Goliath. I think I’m going to flavor his rage perception as a sort of thermal vision/detection.

If its played straight its not overpowered (WELL, as 'not overpowered' as a wizard can be), its when you get into familiar stacking and mote exploitation that its cracked

To get a familiar that can speak, all you have to do is take Eldritch Adept and take Pact of the Chain. Imp, Quasit, Sphinx of Wonder and Sprite can all speak.

Currently lvl 10 as a chronurgist and just wanted to saw momentary stasis shakes out a bit better than you're selling it! Sure, it's not the best choice on every round but when you're already concentrating or saving slots, your option is to fire off a puny cantrip or a no-resource high risk/reward feature that completely robs an enemy of action economy. It is definitely a good backup tool for a control wizard to have!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can still sub in eldritch blast for the haste attack, right? Haste doesn't let you take your extra attacks from the extra attack feature, but I believe the rule replacing this attack supercedes that rules for that attack, and the 1 attack you do get can still be replaced by EB and not be subject to that restriction. Also, with forcecage now requiring concentration, the Abeyance ability might be better used to pull off the now otherwise defunct "microwave" than to make a melee build (especially one that is just a bad wizard until 18th level).

This multiclass build gains nothing over any other subclass of wizard besides haste. You could build this as a 17 bladesinger / 1 warlock / 2 fighter and you'd be able to cast wish and other 9th/8th/7th/6th level spells not accessible to this build, your AC would be higher, you can dual wield to get a free extra attack (nick lets you take this during your attack action) to make up for the haste action loss, your melee attacks would hit harder to help make up for the 1 haste attack you miss out on, and you'd get an extra feat for more int or cha. Or just go 17 valor bard. You miss out on the AC and +INT to damage (as well as the other benefits of bladesong), but you'd be SAD. The math for the wizard version looks like this: 9(2d6 + 12d8) scorching ray 8(1d10 + 5 + 12d8) EB 3(1d6 + 9 + 12d8) scimitar total: 1,264.5 avg damage. So, we lose 2.5 damage (less than .2%) to gain 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spells. Seems like a good trade.

I played rhis in a campaign that went to level 19. The spell storing is not that useful because of the one hour duration. Using the old exhaustion rules the 14th level could be debilitating. This class for players is a balancing at.

UPDATE!!! Every class in the 2024 PHB has a line in their subclass feature (the single one contained within the list of actual class features) that states that they get every subclass feature (the ones contained within their actual subclass) of their level and lower. This does mean that you would get level 1 or 2 subclass features when you get access to your subclass at 3rd level. Wish it was explained in a section before all the classes were laid out. Additionally, clerics have a specific callout in their level 7 blessed strikes feature that it does not stack with divine strike or potent spellcasting provided by an older subclass. A nice addition, I guess. I still feel like it's not enough, but what do you think?

Until the monster manual comes out I wouldn't even touch 5.5e with a 10 foot pole. From everything I've seen everyone deals more damage and gets more combos
