    It's funny how Doflamingo's backstory, that probably would mess 90% of people up... doesn't justify his evil. Like Corazon said, he was already born evil.

    • @Avarn388
      @Avarn388 Рік тому +103

      @lisboah On one hand, there were things outside his control ,like how woefully naive his father was, but on the other hand, the actions he did, yeah he was bad to the bone. And really, what we're seeing is someone who would have been evil no matter where his life would have ended up. It's ironic in that Corazon means "heart" in Spanish because hearts can end up being dark or light and in Corazon's case he clearly was aligned to the latter.

      It reminds me alot about Griffith in a way, alot of people try to defend them by saying thier tragic backstories made them evil. But in reality, they were always monsters.

    • @lisboah
      @lisboah Рік тому +87

      @@Future_Doggo Griffith had no tragic backstory. You could argue that his entire life was manipulated by the God Hand, but that's about it. What makes him pure evil is not his past nor his mental sanity, it's his obsession with his dream and how he will do ANYTHING to achieve it. That and the sheer level of pettiness he showed at both Guts and Casca during the Eclipse.

      Forgot to mention his exposed hairy legs. All of Doflamingo's design spells Goofy-Saturday-Morning-Cartoon-Villain. However, his body language and sharp lines all over his character design tells the opposite of that. He is a threat! A menace even. Which paints another sharp contrast between his antagonistic behaviour while still being portrayed as human, despite all the heinous crimes he has committed.
      Doflamingo is a masterclass in narrative and character design. No matter how goofy he looks at first glance.

    Something else that makes Doflamingo interesting is his messed up sense of empathy. He burns down entire towns so Baby 5 isn't taken advantage of, then proceeds to use her more than anyone else. He claims that his family is more important than anyone else, but won't hesitate to throw their lives away for his convenience. He seeks out the most messed up, vulnerable individuals, so he can make them into fully devoted servants, a fate nearly shared by Law if not for Corazon.
    Anyway, it's all about the SMILES!

      @@Discodian Yeah- up until he was ready to kill them all and everyone else on Dressrosa to start over, lol. I think Doflamingo returns loyalty with loyalty, but he’s his own top priority. He likes having people who are devoted to him pump up his ego and he doesn’t mind returning the favor when he can. But if he decides that their deaths are necessary, nothing will stop him. His full proof plan is either guaranteeing that his crew are loyal enough to die without complaint, or treating the fact that they aren’t loyal enough to die as the reason that they should. He’s not 100% evil, but he’s sitting around a comfortable 97% imo

      He was ready to expose Smile Factory for the sake of Monet. Her determination on self-sacrifice had him mute for a while. So, Doflamingo either cares or has this mask of caring for his family to stay in touch with his human side.

    • @jamesjoe1690
      @jamesjoe1690 10 місяців тому +14

      He's more complicated than that. If he was purely pragmatic, he wouldn't commiserate with vergo and monet, thanking them for their work when he had nothing to gain from doing so and he wouldn't threaten to kill his soldiers for laughing at picas voice.
      I think doffy does have love for people but only if they swear complete loyalty to him.

    The thing about Doflamingo was that he knew what he was doing and that he took joy into what he had the power to do because he was in control. Seeing those scenes where he got so angry, you knew he was about to lose it because someone like Luffy was the the very person that Doflamingo truly despises that was said to have the "Will of D." and would crush anyone that even had that that would relate to what is deemed to be fate.

    What I find fascinating and tragic about Doffy is that he had very little agency (innate evil aside), he was always being manipulated by someone else.
    -His father making the decision for the whole family to leave Mary Geoise
    -Trebol becoming a mentor figure that encouraged his wickedness
    -Trebol was also the one to give Doffy his devil fruit
    -A lot of his own attacks are modeled after the people that tortured him when he was little
    -He is a puppet master, but is ultimately a puppet himself

    Another thing about Doflamingo's glasses and glasses in general for One Piece that doesn't get talked about is their connection to the wearers viewpoint of the world, Captain Kuro, the villain of the now ancient Syrup Village Arc, had a desire to create the perfect plan of cozying up with a rich heiress, making her write him in her will and then having his crew rampage through the village and kill her, leaving him Kaya's wealth and a new life free from piracy. Thing is his glasses, much like his plan, are shakey and don't quite fit at the best of times, causing him to have to make little adjustments here and there both with the glasses and the plan. Then when Merry, Kaya's butler, presents Kuro with a new pair of glasses Kaya bought specifically for him that would fit much easier, he smashes them, why you may ask? because symbolically it means that taking those glasses would mean giving up on his "perfect plan", an idea which he clearly despises. It's the same with Doflamingo's glasses being tinted and slightly warped looking, Doflamingo, being a celestial dragon that fell from the heavens, has a warped and altered view of the world, and even when Luffy beats him and he gets locked up he still wears those glasses, even when he's chained to the floor.

When he made that lore drop that the Donquixotes were one of the 20 families who founded the WG my jaw dropped which explained how much power he swayed. He knows exactly how the world works and know exactly which to blackmail, kill, or enslave.
    Even after he was beaten and jailed after Dressrosa, he still has some cards on the table as he casually asks Magellan who's coming to kill him now. He KNOWS the secrets the Celestial Dragons/Gorosei that they would do anything to stay secret. Backstory while it can use for sympathy sometime are just used a reason why the villain the way they are.

    I’d love to see Law fight against Germa 66 (except Reiju) and Gamma Knife Vinsmoke Niji. He deserves it more than the rest of the Vinsmoke Family. Also, please do the Sanji/Doflamingo comparison video. That sounds like an amazing video I most certainly would watch.

    You HAVE to talk about Rob Lucci, because I think he's also a great One Piece villain solely because he doesn't want power, fame, wealth, etc. He just wants blood, as said himself. He is a lot different than any other antagonist in one piece. Some other good antagonists would be Katakuri and Judge, they would be cool too.

    "Human Trafficking is old news, It's ALL about the SMILES now~" Donquixote Doflamingo.
    I would LOVE to see MangaKamen do an episode called: Boundless Human Empathy: Donquixote Rosinante.
    While much clumsier than Doffy, Rosinante had the exact amount of Suffering Doffy had, BUT became one of the most compasionate and loving members of the Marines after being found by Garp.
    He wanted to help Law, a troubled little brat who traveled the same path Doffy did, and would have become a second coming of the Monster, but despite all that, even when drunk and ranting, Rosinante cried.
    He knew Law was hurting and wanted Law to be happy, and Rosinante, even at the cost of his own life, died protecting Law and the World from Doffy.
    The only men to mourn Rosinante were Law and Sengoku, who had found Rosinante as a child after the death of his birth father, Homing.
    It is what made the scene after Doffy's arrest with Law talking to Sengoku so powerful to me.
    sorry for the rant, Rosinante and Doflamingo are two of my favorite characters because they show two sides of Humanity's struggle: Great Kindness through Suffering or Great Terror through Suffering.
    Still hopeful MangaKamen does the Rosinante video.

    I’d say two things you missed out on is doflamingo’s jp laugh that’s the biggest offense in this whole video lol and the the second would be that we didn’t have an inkling on what his powers were before the timeskip. We saw this man in a war cleave off a giants leg, cleanly, and then control both pirates and marines to fight everyone. He was pure chaos and it was unnerving

    Doffy counts to my favorite villians in OP together with moria, magelan and crocodil ^^ but with doffy its different because he was the most successful out of the bunch. Sure u could say magelan as well but thats not about him rn. Doffy got this right mix, he cared for his crew but at the same time was a horrible person and a monster. Usually i dont like the celestial dragons because they act like theyre supreme but with doffy he can back it up and the nice change of pace really helps his case out :3 Also, the fact that he got such a close relation to law (kinda his uncle if u wanna put it that way, because cora-san was law dad in a way) and they foiled each other but we getting off track. Doffy is often evil for evil sake and as u said, its enteraining and also know things we dont know yet which will be an important reveal later on (i hope ^^')

    Speaking of villains done right, have you heard of The Legend of Vox Machina? While it’s a very funny and adult D&D styled satire on the surface. When it comes to its main villains, and serious moments, they make them as impactful as possible with no funny scenes.
    I think it would be a good tv show to do a video on.

    His messed up relationship with his crew is also very interesting, they invalidate his beliefs and make excuses for him while he protects them ,
    he also manipulated specific traits about each of them that keep him his crew like with baby 5 and her inability to say no or how butters up diamente’s ego
    but the other side of it is shown in his relationship with Trebol , it feels like a cult but the cultist is so enamored by the fact his believers invalidate his beliefs that he can’t seperate himself from them , which is why he does show care and protection to them when he can, a messed up form of found family contrasting with luffys found family in his crew too

    My only complaint about Doffy as a villain is his impact on Luffy as an antagonist, since the role of antagonists are supposed to be actively opposed against the adversary and mostly the protagonist, like Doffy can be really evil and well explained but when his only interactions against Luffy were having him going to the colosseum and fighting Bellamy afterwards it just feels lackluster compared to other antagonists/villains. For example, when you compare Doffy to Akainu and Teach as obstacles and antagonists to Luffy, both those characters actively played parts in essentially ruining Luffy's life whereas Doffy didn't leave that much impact on Luffy in comparison.
