  • Testing and reviewing the Hatching Time Chick Brooder and Grow Out cages. Hatching Time was kind enough to send me a Brooder setup which I added to my existing grow out cages. In this video, I show the components that are included in the brooder setup and run a few quick test prior to placing chicks in the unit.

    Whoa I have a lotta research to do raising quails. I had no idea each stage of life requires a different cage setup. Thanks for sharing!

    Such a pity we don't have these in South Africa. It looks amazing. Thank you Terry, as always very informative.

    I have one on the way. Very excited, as the first layer from them is working really well!

    5/4/2024 @ 9:05 PM - my heater fluctuates from 96 to 103. Is this ok?

    Wish I could get some but with my retired income I have to be very careful of how much I spend. I build all my pens but use large totes for brooders. PS I have 16 chicks just hatched with 10 to go.

    can you get the brooder and then just swap out the doors without moving the chicks?

    Hi Terry, Just wanted to ask if there was any problems with using a blue or red bulb due to white being so bright? Thank you another great video from you.

      I've always used white lights, but I do know that some use red. I've never heard of anyone using blue though.

    Hello Mr Terry. I got a few questions. 1 on the incubator you made what is the egg tray made out of that you layed the eggs on and would that mess the feet up being on it for days. Im wanting to build a 8'×4'×2' brooder box outside i was thinking about foam board in the walls and put metal on the inside walls how many light would you put in it.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  2 роки тому

      The flooring in the egg trays is 1/4" hardware cloth with a drawer liner material over that. As far as the brooder, you will have to play with the lighting to see what gives you the best results. Watch the chicks, if they are all huddled together you need more heat, and if they are scattered away from the heat source it is most likely too hot.

    Terry - can the vertical nipple waterers be used for newly hatched chicks or should I use the red chicken cups?

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  2 роки тому

      For newly hatched chicks I would use the quart waterers with the small basin until the chicks get a little size to them and start to feather out, then you can switch to the nipples or cups.

      @@CoturnixCorner Thanks, Terry. I made something similar with a jelly jar. I cut a 1/4" by 1/4" notch in the neck of a 12 oz. jar with a diamond saw. Then I set the full 12 oz. jar upside down in the lid of a 16 oz. jar. I got a 1/2" ring of water that's only about 1/8" deep. The chicks don't have any trouble drinking from it. My concern was whether or not the vertical nipples would work. Thanks for the help, it's appreciated. I ordered a drill and tap for 1/8 NPT so I can install the nipples into some PVC pipe. I was going to do that for my rabbits also. I know the rabbits can use the vertical nipples.

    these are nice but very messy. And water drinkers are finicky have to check them make sure they are not overfilling and make sure they are working. Use a temp gauge the one on the unit is not accurate. overall nice I used black plastic to block poop from going out the sides and the rear of the cages.

  • @jamesfrazier6206

    The only problem I have with those brooders is there's no way to block off the front to the feeder tray when swapping it out/cleaning. I've had a couple chick's go in the front and get stuck there so I had to try and block it off for the first week or so.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  2 роки тому

      James the feed cover folds down over the opening. As long as you have the feed trough installed and the cover closed chicks can't get out.

      I am going to have to look into this, because I am having the same issue as above. Very frustrated with chicks getting into the feed tray and getting cold/ dying.
