Well this newcomer thanks you. I've learned so much from this channel from my first cage build to hatching and brooding. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for this wonderful hobby.
Thanks for all your awesome videos! I studied them, took notes, and am now hatching out my first quail. It's day 18 and many have hatched already. My husband and I are also building the stacking cages shown in one of your videos.
One of my 3 day old quail is walking around with its eyes almost shut. It is otherwise looking well, active, eating well and sings all day. Is this something I can treat?
"lockdown" seems a redundant term, to me - as if you take them out and juggle them daily, beforehand? laughing - with you, not at you. Shoot, once I place 'em in the bator, there they sit, other than day 14, removing from the turners. You've really been a huge help to me in my startup - I've raised many other birds, but the 80 in the Brinsea are my first quail. THANK YOU!
Hello Terry, should you go into lockdown on day 14 or 15? I keep hearing different things from different sources. I count day one as the day when you put the eggs in.
Great information as always. Thank you for sharing! :) I'm short on time due to work, but I'm working bit by bit on my quail setup. I'll be trying some of your ideas. :) thanks again. :)
Thanks for the video Terry. You are always great at explaining things. For hatches that seem to be staggered, early chicks and late ones, what is your cut off day for incubating? I did a day 21 cut off for my most recent eggs, but after doing an eggtopsy, I had quite a few developed which probably needed another day.
I usually don't go past day 19 - 20 as most of my eggs hatch pretty much uniformly. If you have cool spots in your incubator, hatching can be up to 3 or 4 days late.
Thanks so much! this is my first time hatching quails and I really appreciate your in-depth explanations. I made a homemade incubator and it is on a hot water bottle, it stays at the same temperature as any other incubator but I need to change the water every three hours, is it ok for me to open it up and change the water still when the eggs are in lockdown?
Great video. Thank you for sharing these insights with us. I have a question. I keep my incubator at 37.5 celcius. Should temperature be same for lockdown too? I see some people lowering it.
Same temp, increase humidity to 50%-60% pending how "weather tight" your incubator is to the outside humidity. Remember, %50 humidity maintains the water volume of the egg, >%50 (%60 increases it - albeit slowly), decreasing the internal air sack.
Do you think it's important to have an egg turner? I don't have one I just open it up and turn them. I just found your page and I'll be watching the humidity and do lockdown I hadn't done that before maybe that's why I only had 1 hatch each time I've incubated. But my question is do u think that affects where the air bubble would be placed if I don't have them in an egg turner?
I just subscribed, from Puerto Rico i am on the 13th day, my humidity was over 60,and I opened the little flap to let some humidity out. Tomorrow is lockdown and I wonder what humidity I should do, THANKYOU
Day17, locked down on day 15 put some damp sponges in the incubator but none of them are wiggling yet? Temp is 37.5 when candled them all of them apart from two had embryos, so I took out the two that were just yolk.
Had 13 eggs 5 had hatched no problems, but the others had not. I checked the eggs noticed some eggs piped they were facing down as the other hatched chicks moved them stopping them from getting out. is there a way around this problem?
@@CoturnixCorner OK but it was the term "lock down" that I was referring to. I didn't know what you meant by this and why it was different to just "hatching".(which everyone knows and understands). Are you doing anything different during this period or special in any way? Why use a different/non-standard term for it? I'm not trying to be difficult, or confrontational, in any way. I'm just trying to understand if you are doing anything extra for quail that other birds (e.g. chicken) don't have. It's the term that puzzled me. I think most commercial incubators have integral hatching boxes in the bottom where the eggs are allowed to hatch and the birds/reptiles/etc are contained until they are ready to be moved on to less demanding conditions. I do appreciate you taking the time to explain what you're doing and trying to demystify the process.
@@ApiaryManager actually the term lockdown is used throughout the poultry industry. Basically the term is applied to the the last few days of incubation where the eggs are no longer turned and the humidity is raised to help soften the eggshell. I think they dubbed it "lockdown" as during this time you don't want to disturb or open the incubator until the eggs hatch (thus being locked down). Hope this helps and thanks for your comments.
@@CoturnixCorner I've kept chickens for many years and never heard that term until I came across your channel (and also MyShire). I assumed it was a local term or that you were doing something else specific to quail. I reason that other viewers would be as unsure of its meaning as I was. Thank you for clarifying your meaning though.
@Mohammed Kiani I made the incubator Terry had in the video. I found a humidity tester from amazon. I used Tupperware with water with sponges to increase the humidity.
Personally I lockdown on day 14. As far as which is better I don’t think there is a correct answer. If you set you eggs late in the day then locking down on day 15 is fine, on the other hand if you set them early lockdown on day 14.
Can you give me any tip why my hatch rate is so low? Example 50 eggs I only gets 20 maybe 30 hatch but they all have baby in it and the one don’t hatch just die inside the eggs? I got all the humidity and temper according to the manual…
What about food and water? When to feed them and give them water? When do I remove them from the incubator? Do I wait for all eggs to hatch before opening the incubator?
Terry today is 11th day of my incubating. My incubator didnt have power for 2-3 hours. The temp was 28 degrees Celsius. And humidity was %90 percent when it stared working again. Can my eggs survive this? Thank you.
Hi terry hope you are well ,I have quails that have hatched they are not yet fluffy so I’ll leave them for 24 hours , but when placing them in a brooder I am afraid to do so as I do not want to shrink wrap the other eggs , any suggestions. Many thanks !
Coturnix Corner I have chicks that have hatched but two of them seem weak as they can’t get up and walk they easily loose balance , any advice , hope they make it
@@haych9803 when they first hatch they are pretty much exhausted and will rest in the incubator. Just give them time, within 12 hours they should be up and moving around and be dry and fluffly.
I recently boiled my quail eggs and popped one open and there was a gray stonish thing on the inside. Do you know what this could be? And if it’s harmful? Wish I could send you a pic
My quail chicks hatched yesterday, but almost half of them died probably because of turning of the eggs by hatching chicks, what can be the solution for the next batch ?
I doubt that the other chicks affected your hatch rate, I would look into your temps and humidity as well as the fertility of your eggs. Were they shipped eggs?
When the inner membrane wraps around the chick and suffocates the chick inside the egg is known as shrink wrapped.. This happens when dry air enters the egg once the chick has pipped, which is why it is important to keep the humidity levels up and not open the incubator.

The wood in 1" x 3" pine, and yes 16" x 16".

Thanks for sharing and slowing a bit to explain to use newbie's :)
You're welcome and I hope to help everyone of all experience levels.
Do you have standard size quail or jumbo
I wondered why you called it "lockdown". Incubator suppliers refer to the "hatching tray" in the bottom of the incubator. Am I missing something?
Depends on the type of incubator, not all incubators have hatching boxes, the eggs are just placed in the bottom of the incubator.

Hi Terry- I locked down a day early day 13. Are they going to be okay?
I started incubating on Saturday. And then moved them to lock down two saturdays later. Did I remove them from the turner too early?

Locked on 3-19 therefore its the c3-19 variant lockdown. Three days to flatten the curve. (Or 4) 😉
Humidity goes up but does temp stay at95.5?
