I have a 33 gallon long with a 48" Current Orbit LED light bar, Fluval canister filter and some powerheads. Stunning and super clean looking. With that said, I love them both.
I love the look of a 33 long with a bunch of small fish schooling around in it. But with limited room I'd go with the 40 breeder and it's just more versatile overall. I've been trying to decide what my next tank will be (don't tell my wife). Haha!! Nice vid.
Thank you for this video. I wasn't aware of the 33L before and now it's on my wishlist. Unfortunately they're not available at where I live :( I love the 40B it's so versatile, I also like the 30B as well.
I prefer the 40 breeder, have always liked the footprint of it. I like the 18" front to back depth, gives you plenty of room for aquascaping, then tings don't look so close together in that dimension
I just ordered a 40 breeder for my 2nd tank. Excited to take my time and set it up. The deeper depth is what sold me on the 40. Nice video, good information.
I like both tanks. However if I was given the option of only one of them I would choose the 33L. Most fish defend there territory in a radius, a 40B allows for less territory since the footprint is more square. A 33L being the same foot print as a 55 has accessories that are easier to find and interchangeable with other tanks. Great comparison. I think both tanks have their place and both have benefits. Keep up the great work.
Great video Professor,as always full of good useable info. I have only gotten into planted tanks since 2017 after I got home from hospital. The only problems I have had is with mosses and floaters. On a bright note just the other day I saw some of my Anubias is flowering.
I want the 33 long and can’t find it anywhere. I had the 40 breeder and loved it, but something draws me in to the 33. I even like the 30 breeder but that’s even harder to find.
Great info! Love seeing your beautiful fish. I'm still learning so I appreciate that you added the name of the fish. I have a 40 breeder but would like to get a 33L gallon in the future.
I can't believe I'm just watching this video now....... anyway Jason you got great taste in tanks. I love 33 l, 40 breeders, and 50 gal lowboys. It was great meeting you and your wife at Aquashella. You 2 keep up the great work.
33g is the best I have for my Shell Dwellers (Neolamprologus Multifasciatus). You are right about the availability and lower pricing for covers and stands.
I'm in the middle of this debate for a small area of expansion for Tanganyikans. Perfect timing! Thanks for the well-thought-out comparison. I think I have my answer....33L
I never heard of the 33 long until your latest video about the thousands of fish you got. I looked it up and saw this video. I don't have space for this, but I really like the look because of the low profile. The only thing that won't be good is that I like the 3-4"of substrate. That makes the tank even shorter.
Thanks! This video came right on time. I can put my paired off turquoise Severums in a 40 gallon breeder! Yay! I always enjoy listening to you and learn so much! Thank you!
Do you know who carries a 33 gallon long? I have been searching online, from Petco, PetSmart and more and can't seem to find this size. The 40 Breeder is a great size for sure, and I am sure I will add one to my collection someday but for the short term I would like to try the 33 Long.
I work at a LFS, and our largest tanks are the 33 gallon long size. The center brace is a royal pain when doing maintenance or catching fish. I have not set up my 40 gallon breeder yet, so I don’t have experience working with one.
I have been thinking about doing a biotope-style 33long with some Rummy-nose and Cardinal Tetras. I love my Red Eye Tetras and have been wanting to do a tank just of them, but not sure if a 33 long is a suitable size for a larger tetra?
Excellent comparison, along with helpful species info. I have a 40 gallon breeder in which I house 2 large fatty boy fancy goldfish. For goldfish, I prefer a tank with a larger footprint rather than height. When I upgrade for these boys, it will be a 180 gallon because the height and depth are manageable for me for maintenance and they will get more length to swim in. Then the 40 breeder will become a grow out tank for about another year or year and a half for my two youngling Ryukin females. What will I do with the two Ryukins when they outgrow the 40 breeder, well we will see. Most likely I'll hunt down another 180. My other tanks are smaller, but I do want to upgrade my biotope tank to a larger size, so most likely the 40 breeder will be those inhabitants' new home. It's fun to plan for the future. Than you for your awesome videos! Stay safe and heathy!
What kind of stones do you have in the tank at 5:09 ? I'm actually looking into a tank for a mud turtle and I read 40gal tank is best, but wanted to see what a "breeder tank"is and muds are not much "divers" (so I read) so maybe this will work? Ty
I cant find a 40 long up in ontario 🇨🇦 Canada but i can find a 33 long i still have to order it , but will only taje a week . Than you for a great video has helped me decide 33 longb,
Oh yes! A great video! I came from a 40 breeder to a 33 long and I dont regret it. For the fish I keep, which is mostly smaller schooling fish like neon tetras, a 33 long is more than suitable.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I was lucky enough to find a 33 long in stock regularly at my LFS made by a company called Seapora for only 100 dollars. About the same price or sometimes even cheaper than a 55 would be. Not too bad. 40 longs are nice sized tanks too but generally ridicously expensive like the one my LFS had for 150 dollars. Yikes.
Jason I have a 33 long with pictus cats , vampire pleco and a school of Congo tetra, and they tank seems perfect for those fish, most importantly my water changes and very easy , being tank is so short.but I will definitely stay with the 33 long
It really comes down to perspective in landscaping. A 33L can better capture the feeling of a river or section of an underwater landscape. When you want to show the territorial behavior of your group and have a 'slice of life', the 33L is the pick. 'Course the fish can't be too large or tall, or they will appear confined in the space. White Clouds up through small cichlids, yes. Anything larger, no. The 40 will give you a 'close' or 'portrait' perspective of a 'section' of an underwater environment. Something like a section of mbuna rock work or small cove with a couple of featured inhabitants. For a comparatively inactive swimmer like Discus needing height for security would be ideal in a 40. A simple plant or branch arrangement yielding front-to-back depth where the fish can recede from the front glass is the ideal use for that extra 6". Or something like a community a Platies where a dark forested area could hide babies.. But each choice can become limiting when it comes time to change stock in the tank. Think of how great a tank that is harder to find would be: 72" X 18" X 12" - a 65 gallon that you could really artistically stretch out with. In Jason's priorities, two 6' tanks on the wall instead of 3 shallow 4 footers. Many, many more choices available in something approaching life size perspective.
I have a 55 and an acrylic 40 breeder. Not exactly the comparison you're making here, but of those two, I think I like the breeder better. I like the added depth more than the added width.
Curious what you think of a 29 gallon vs 37/40 gallon tanks? Do extra 8-10 extra gallons make a big difference? Note, I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to fish keeping.
Good question. The 40 breeder is one of my favorite tanks, but stands and lids are a little harder to find. The 37 is kind of a pain because it’s so tall. I would get the 29 gallon over the 37. Have fun!
I like the 33 long better, and finally decided to retire mine after approximately 25 years for fear of age-related, catastrophic failure. And now I can't find one to buy ANYWHERE. I guess that makes the 40 gallon breeder the winner of this showdown by default.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you. I thought the brichardi-looking one is gracilis, but according to my brief research, it should be N. marunguensis. That fish looks way bigger than gracilis' max. TL of 3.5 in, which is basicly the only information about this fish that is consistent on the internet. Although gracilis juveniles in Tanganyika-specialized shop (imported - no breeder in my area) are absolutely gorgeous, I am afraid I couldn't provide tank bigger than 20G if they grow this huge. I am truly hungry to get as much info as I can haha
Hi, thank you for the great content..... Can we use PVC pipe joint for keeping Pothos in aquarium...the joint will be submerged in water....can it be harmful for fishes?
I'm not sure, but I always use aquarium silicone for anything that goes into the tank. GE silicone can be used provided it doesn't have any additives (there are multiple types).
I didn’t know they made a 33 long until I started doing some research a few days ago. Luck of the draw Jason you put out a video! Awesome comparisons. Now I just have to figure out where I can find a 33 long tank. Any suggestions? Are they made by aqueon?
Aqueon makes one, but also if you can find them in your area, I highly recommend a brand called Seapora. Great quality build to their tanks and they use black silicone which looks awesome.
im obsessed with this channel, (ps awesome beard!). im the guy who almost killed my poor guppies with ammonia. ive been watching all these videos just learning, i just bought some guppy grass and duckweed/frogsbit. after adding the beneficial bacteria the other day i can already see it forming on my wood piece i have in there. i cant wait to have little fry, now im just curious if i should order fry cage or if guppy grass should be adequate? im using a 40 tall right now. obviously these are for future plans as my tank is still cycling!
I have a 50 gal breeder and a 30 gal breeder tank, both are 3ft tank same footprint as a 40 breeder ther difference is the hight. I keep a breeding group of 12 cory panda in the 30 and I can't think of a better tank to keep them. Very easy to manage and clean and provide just the right amount of space for the fish.
I just love the surface space of the 40 breeder my Multis are so happy with all the space, I could probably move them into a 30 breeder since they don't really need the height.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Ok, will go with the 40b because of the extra width and opportunities for a greater scape. Also because I just found out that the allocated location won't fit a 48 inch long tank😢.
I dislike the 55 because of the 12 inches fro t to back so I am pretty sure I would not like the 30 long. It really does depend on how and where you want to place them. And the 40b is my favorite tank. I feel it has big tank dimensions in a small tank footprint. Love your channel.
Looking to add some more fish into my 40 breeder with my 12 skirt tetras and 6 sterbai corydoras. I see you have rainbow cichlids, is it true it is best to keep them in large groups? Really looking for a small enough american cichlid to keep apart from rams and electric blue acaras which don't seem to do well in my NYC water :( I lost a couple
My groups of Rainbow Cichlids have done very well in a group. If you keep planted tanks, they will eat every green thing in the tank - and quick! :-) The only issue you will have is if they start to breed - they may be hard on the other fish at that point.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you so much for always providing good advice! I keep plants so I will keep looking for other tank mate alternatives until I can own a bigger tank for bigger american cichlids :)
Aqueon makes one. Marineland doesnt. Another brand which is far better than Aqueon IMO that makes them is Seapora/Aquarium Masters. Check my vids of it
I feel bad for the brevis with swim bladder issue. I have a couple of multifaciatus with the same prob, don’t have the heart to put them down. Is there any solution to this ? 😭
@@PrimeTimeAquatics One of my older breeders had this issue after a few large egg masses my wife calls her mama since shes has had so so many her SB is shot she sits on the substrate but otherwise is healthy so we keep her.
So for them I actually do like something like a 55 gallon or larger/taller. They can get pretty tall - the one I have in my 150 gallon is probably a solid 8" from top to bottom including fins (maybe more).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics No one has and all the LFS said their suppliers did not have so I went to my Glass man told him the measurements of the pieces I needed. Bought Upper and lower frame and built it myself for about $110.
So, Jason, would it be safe to say that your favorite overall tank size is a tie between the 40B and 33 long? Would you also have more 33 longs if they were cheaper/easier to come by like the 40B?
I can see this hobby is going to start to cost a lot of money, as I would like to experiment with all these different sizes of tank. Great video though 🤓
Petco 40 breeder is $55 after tax. We run 24 in our little fish room (only 1 fish room currently its just little) and we love the 40 breeders, we also have 30 long`s divided in to 3 sections (Walmart Mars systems) and they are great also. Some are not divided yet (but will be). Both great tanks for a simple fish room and easy to 3 stack a 40 and 4 stack a 30 long if you are running sponge filters. Looking back if we had the room I would have either got off the floor higher and done 3 stacked on each or 2 for 40`s and 3 for 30 longs. Great video it really explains it well to the average person and had this been out I may have better planned out our first fish room. lol
Good points. I am a big fan of not putting tanks really close to the floor - I tend not to look at them and they are harder to clean. I'm also a big proponent of having lots of working room in the tanks. My original stands all ensured 12" of room, but some of my later builds have less and I regret that.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Yea everyone reading this should take it honesty and advice from 2 fish keepers. I agree 100% I can admit myself we have 2 Breeding Prs of Angels on a bottom row. 1 we feel bad about they are social and the other hate everyone so they tend to be happier same with a couple Blood Parrots. We have Red Jewels and a peacock tank at bottom level also. They got moved to the top and blossomed in to social fish (over time), We have a Koi and some Gold fish in a bottom tank also right now. The Koi was a rescue and the gold fish started as feeders and turned in to pets. Bottom row (near the floor) tanks tend to get forgotten. I discovered Snails in a tank last night. Karisa (this is Neal) was given some snails by another breeder and she did not know where to put them, she saw an open tank and dropped them in. These poor guys have been in there a few days not being fed. because Karisa is just under 5Ft tall I tried to keep the top row a little lower. We got used to the smaller working area between tanks but that bottom row gets neglected a lot. It also runs cooler (much cooler). Anyone reading this please take the time to make a single rack to test when starting a fish room. test run that layout for a week or 2. Go in daily, spend time finding your personal issues with the top and bottom tanks. Do you need to be higher on the bottom? Do you need a step ladder for the top tank for daily stuff like feeding? The time and expense wasted on a temporary stand will be worth its weight in TP (Gold again in the future).
another advantage of the 33 is the cost of water considering the area of the tank is almost the same as a 40breeder. I breed crystal red shrimp and where i live my tap water is very hard and my ph is 8. I have to use reverse osmosis water to lower the ph/kh and tds. the extra 7 gallon difference is well worth it to me in regards of cost/time of making RO water and extra time spend remixing to bring the water parameters required to keep my shrimp alive. it may sound like the extra 7 gallons it's not that big a difference but its HUGE!!!!
I have two yellow labs in a 20 gallon with about 15 fry. That’s all I had to put them in. It would of been 3 but my yellow aci spit in my 75 found two babies in there.

What do you keep in it?
@@steve-yf6xu Mostly Tetras, with some Cory Catfish, and some algae eaters.
Hey Jason can you do a comparison between a 37gal and a 38gal. I know the dimensions are different but i’d like to get your imput.
I'll add it to the list!
Prime Time Aquatics awesome! Looking forward to it.
Feel blissed! Got my 33L today😘
Very nice!
The 33 gallon looks more Classy..! And is awesome for planted aquascapes and Hillstream biotopes.
What are your thoughts on the 30-breeder? ..... I really like the idea of a 33-long or 40-long for active schooling fish like Giant Danios or Barbs.
I like them too. I believe they are the same length and width as a 40B, but shorter. I tend to like shorter tanks.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics - Yes ... It might work well for triple stacking.
Those Red gold severums look great. Longer tank is better.
I would take the 33 long, due to its lower water weight.
im obsessed with this channel, (ps awesome beard!). im the guy who almost killed my poor guppies with ammonia. ive been watching all these videos just learning, i just bought some guppy grass and duckweed/frogsbit. after adding the beneficial bacteria the other day i can already see it forming on my wood piece i have in there. i cant wait to have little fry, now im just curious if i should order fry cage or if guppy grass should be adequate? im using a 40 tall right now. obviously these are for future plans as my tank is still cycling!
Thank you! If the guppy grass grows in I have never felt the need for a breeder box. They usually populate the tank in no time!
Great info for when I upgrade!
I've been trying to decide but 40 is where my heart it with 2 filters and 2 heaters
I'd love to know where did you find the 33g long?
I got them all from a vendor at Aquatic Experience a few years ago. MOst LFS can order them though.
I love 40 gallon breeder but I don't mind a 30 gallon long tank either....I have a 40 breeder now and its awesome..
What would be better for dwarf cichlids like apistogramma, rams, or kribensis? Planning my next tank for one of the species.
I think both are great choices. Just depends on what tank you prefer and the cost associated with the setup.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Ok, will go with the 40b because of the extra width and opportunities for a greater scape. Also because I just found out that the allocated location won't fit a 48 inch long tank😢.
Like you mentioned Jason cost for the 33L is higher than the 40B (which I have a few of). If cost wasn’t a factor I like the versatility of the 33L.
I was lucky in that I picked up the 33 longs at the Aquatic Experience from a vendor who didn't want to ship them back after the show.
I dislike the 55 because of the 12 inches fro t to back so I am pretty sure I would not like the 30 long. It really does depend on how and where you want to place them. And the 40b is my favorite tank. I feel it has big tank dimensions in a small tank footprint. Love your channel.
Thank you!
How many goldfish could I have in the 40 g breeder?
Maybe 2-3 fancies?
What was the tank Behind him
50 gallon low boy!
I really wanted to try a 33L after watching this video, but I called Aqueon today and they have discontinued this size. 😭
Is it safe to use tempered glass with 8mm thick for 40 gallons?
You know, I’m not sure. I haven’t built a tank. I know tempered glass can be an issue if someone ever wants to drill the tank for an overflow.
7:30 the little shrimp on the grass are so cute. I wish my water would allow me to keep them.
What is the fish that is blue with a yellow tail?
Those are cyprichromis leptosoma
This is a great video. I am now on the hunt to find which brand 33 L tank is best.... Any one have video review options?
Aqueon makes one. Marineland doesnt. Another brand which is far better than Aqueon IMO that makes them is Seapora/Aquarium Masters. Check my vids of it
I feel bad for the brevis with swim bladder issue. I have a couple of multifaciatus with the same prob, don’t have the heart to put them down. Is there any solution to this ? 😭
I have tried most of the "treatments" out there, but in this case they aren't working. He's an older fish at this point.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics One of my older breeders had this issue after a few large egg masses my wife calls her mama since shes has had so so many her SB is shot she sits on the substrate but otherwise is healthy so we keep her.
Thinking about setting up an angelfish exclusive tank: what size do you feel would be best?
So for them I actually do like something like a 55 gallon or larger/taller. They can get pretty tall - the one I have in my 150 gallon is probably a solid 8" from top to bottom including fins (maybe more).
Thank you!
I have been looking for a 33 long for month and have had no luck. Can you suggest a manufacturer?
I think all of mine were Aqueon - usually LFS can special order them.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics No one has and all the LFS said their suppliers did not have so I went to my Glass man told him the measurements of the pieces I needed. Bought Upper and lower frame and built it myself for about $110.
Love the 33 long I have one
At 3:20 what type of fish is that?
That is cyprichromis leptosoma.
Where can you buy these tanks? I'm having a hard time finding them.
40 breeders are available at most petco and petsmart along with LFS. Usually an LFS can order a 33 long.
sir, I really want to have a tidal 55 but unfortunately, I can't find even 1 here in the PH even in Amazon, can you help me? tnx
I'm not really sure, besides trying to find it on the internet?
I like the 33 long tank 👍
good info
So, Jason, would it be safe to say that your favorite overall tank size is a tie between the 40B and 33 long? Would you also have more 33 longs if they were cheaper/easier to come by like the 40B?
I love them both, but I'd still have a mix because I also really like the depth of the 40B.
I can see this hobby is going to start to cost a lot of money, as I would like to experiment with all these different sizes of tank. Great video though 🤓
That happens to a lot of us. :-)
The first tank is always the most expensive.
😃👍
(Per gallon, anyway)
✌️😁
Posted this question an older video first: 40b too much for (1) Betta, (10-20) school of green neon tetras, (5 -6) school of corys?
I think that could work.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks! Just bought one - last day of the sale + buy online discount for $37!!
what is that shallow tank??!!
That is a 50 gallon low boy made by Zoomed. I love those tanks!
40 breeder just because I already have a 4 foot tank other wise it would be to hard to decide I would end up with both.
Is the tank at 4:50 a 40g ?
Ya, and the ones right behind it are our 33 longs.
I have two yellow labs in a 20 gallon with about 15 fry. That’s all I had to put them in. It would of been 3 but my yellow aci spit in my 75 found two babies in there.
That is too funny. You have babies everywhere!
I have a 60g frag waiting
