  • Join Kirsten Segler from The Greenery and discover some fun tropical plants! All of these Colocasia and Canna Lily tropicals feature large leaves and come in a variety of colours. These plants tend to do best in half day sun, half day shade. Use shade cloth over the plants to create the perfect light filter!
Part 1 of the series focuses on the tropical plants we've grown in our water feature. If you plan to plant these in the water as well, please be aware that they will grow much larger than if you plant them in the ground or in a pot!
    Featured Tropical Plants:
    - Colocasia "Fontanesii"
    - Canna Lily "Pretoria" (Similar to Canna Lily "Tropicanna Gold")
    - Canna Lily "Durban" (Similar to Canna Lily "Tropicanna")
    - Colocasia "Diamond Head"
    - Colocasia "Elena"
    - Colocasia "Illustris"
    - Canna Lily "Australia"
    - Colocasia "Black Magic"

I pull up my cannas every fall before the first freeze and wrap the rhizome in newspapers and package them up in a cardboard box. I put them in my basement. they keep well as long as you put them away dry. plant again in spring. very easy to maintain. You don't need to let them die.

Thank you for your message. We agree that it's a waste to treat cannas plants as annuals. In Part 4 (ua-cam.com/video/5cp89uONKfU/v-deo.html), we explain how to overwinter the plants, so it's definitely an option we'd encourage. And we are so happy to hear replant yours every year! Happy gardening!

Canna lilies and elephant ears can take a good amount of frost, as they are grow as perennials up to southern Missouri. I'm in southern Louisiana where they are invasive and grow on bayou and lake banks. They can be grown in zones 6-10 as perennials. My grandmother who is in St Louis has cannas and colocasias and in October she cuts them to the ground and puts about and inch of mulch on top of them, and in May they come back up again. I'm in zone 9a and they die to the ground in mid December and we don't do anything to winterize them. They typically come back up in March.

I wanted to grow some cannas but was worried about them being invasive I'm in the west Midlands in zone 9a do you think it would be ok to plant them in the ground as we do get some cold winters

That's a huge waste to just treat them as annuals; everyone who buys Cannas and Elephant Ears should know how to make them go dormant or keep them as house plants.

I know I'm in the minority, but I find it cruel and really horrible to treat wonderful tropical plants as annuals. Now that orchids and so many other exquisite plants are so inexpensive, this trend has caught on.
I can remember my grandmother cherishing her geraniums and taking them in each year for winter and I do the same. How sad that people just throw away gorgeous plants.

Hi Paolo! These plants love water, so the more the better! We have some of ours sitting in water, that's how much they love it :) We also put ours under a canvas shade to avoid direct sunlight, but they are in a bright area. Hope this helps! ~The Greenery

Ok my cannas ( from plugs in march 20017) were in water for summer but moved indoors for winter next to a window but not close to a radiator. waiting for spring to divided and using a bigger pot, also gonna try netted pot for the new growth. Canna gold is much bigger but I don't know why? Will be good to hear about yours.
