  • Growing croton plants indoors isn't too particularly difficult for most people until winter hits and that seems to be when most troubles arise. In this video I go over what I think is the main issue going on with these houseplants. How to water houseplants isn't something with a simple answer, but there are numerous factors that will help with all of our plants if they are taken into consideration which I cover in this video.

In Perth West Australia, I have about 60 crotons, lots in large pots like in the video. I feed monthly, and include Epson salts, to get good colour. I use droughtshield in our hot summers, and we have warm winters. Love them . Nice to see your plants.

My history with crotons is weird. My huge one became infested with spider mites and died last summer. ☹️ I didn’t catch them until it was too late. The 2nd largest started dropping leaves in December and is now deader than dirt. (I think that’s the correct expression) The smallest one loves me for now but I won’t buy another one. Too finicky for me. I LOVE the way they look (yours is incredible) but I don’t have the patience for one more persnickety plant over winter. But note how I was drawn to your video. 😅 There’s always a chance I’ll find one and think…I know I can make it happy this time. ♥️ If that happens I’ll be back to watch this same vid again. Count on it.

Hi, just bought several croutons for outdoor landscaping , I haven't put them in the ground yet. I thought I'd let them get accustomed to their new environment. So I'm giving them about a week before putting in the ground. I planned to put them in the ground with them in the pot after putting new well drained soil, and that is so I can bring them indoors in the fall! They are looking very healthy right now! They are facing east and will probably get 4-6 hours of sun! We live in GA! EXCELLENT ADVICE, I am going to keep a close eye on them and pray I can maintain them. They are sooo beautiful!

I got a croton in a dying clearance mixed planter from Lowe's. I put it in a chunky orchid bark, cactus soil, perlite, worm casting mix. I planted her in a plastic planter and put it it a more attractive catchpot. It's in a window that I put a white sheer on a tension bar behind the blind so it has brite filtered light. Twice a week I lift the planter and when it feels light I water it. To member I keep a watering can on the shelf next to her. This plant was three stems and 2 leaves. A year and a half later is is full and sassy. I do not move the planter around like a ficus I feel it likes to be left alone in its happy place and just don't mess with her lol. I just ordered 2 Mrs. Iceton's feeling confident that I can get them to thrive.

Hi Jeff! Just watched your previous video on repotting your croton, then went back and re-watched your video on Mr. Freckles. Like I mentioned, I keep looking at crotons thinking I may try one again because of the colorful leaves. The three videos are very helpful! I just looked for the Freckles online and didn't see any. Thank you so much for sharing!

Well I hate to say it but shorts are going to be popping up from me too starting in February. UA-cam is pushing creators to make them in order to compete with tik tok. 🙄
Chances are channel that don't make them won't be favored or suggested to people anymore.
I agree though, I think they're annoying and I hate when I'm watching a channel and in between normal videos like 3 or 4 shorts play. It ruins the flow of the videos.
They need to make it an option to be notified about videos and shorts separately bc im sure you're not the only annoyed by the constant notifications.

The prayer plant I bought in no way should have been marked 19.99 as the rest of them were. But come on 19.99 for a small prayer plant? As far as I’m concerned even 9.99 was a stretch, especially for a prayer plant. ❄️💚🙃

Man the best croton I've grown and I do grow here in Indiana is the bush on fire croton. I never have had an issue with it. I bring it in at night as days get colder and I barely get any leaf drop. I say my main issues is it just not getting enough water. But I put the guy in a bucket and it's fine. Love the bush on fire croton though.

They can do that! They'll totally defoliate sometimes when things cool and days get shorter and rebound as long as they aren't overwatered while they're still indoors and cool. Such neat plants 😊

Lol... Don't make the mistake, like the previous owner of my Croton made before gifting it to me prior to moving out-of-state: Take OUT the Drip Tray that was stored IN the pot from the nursery, and put it UNDER the pot!!
Or, make the mistake I made with the Croton: I failed to QUARANTINE it, to watch for any issues... I didn't notice the early stages of a Mealy Bug infestaion, or the fungus throughout the soil that it came in...
I decided to decontaminate it before trashing it AND it's soil, by first killing off the mealy bugs, then bagging everything (including the top soil around it), and sending it off to the dump along with my regular trash...
I still don't know what kind of fungus that was living in it's "soup" of non-drained soil, as it was attaching itself to the Perlite (sp?), and root area... I couldn't tell the difference between the two -- only that there was a LOT more of the fungus (If anyone knows what kind of, Please reply to my comment)...
So, I wound up spending the next two weeks treating the "Hole" I put the Croton in, and the surrounding soil, with a strong combination of Hydrogen Peroxide, NEEM Oil, and a bit of Dawn dish detergent, and water...
Soon, all the cats in the area will have a whole new area in the back corner of my flower garden to claim as their litterbox😫..
More hard lessons learning the hard way!!

The peat can hold much more water than coir until it becomes hydrophobic and then a good bottom water soak will hydrate the peat so that it holds water again but coir never holds a lot of water. They are very different says the old lady who's been collecting and growing for 48 years lol.... I'm old. 🧓
