Engine Masters did a video of progressively bigger heads on a mild short block and got better power across the band as they got bigger, even with a mild cam. Their conclusion: get the biggest heads you can afford and but the cam that fits the way you drive. Big heads help at any RPM.
not only did you pick up power but you improved the characteristics of the engine, seems more responsive/ explosive and seems to accelerate the engine much quicker
I love that when you get on it you can tell that you’re really “really” driving the car. You look so determined to push it to its absolute limits and it’s hilarious. Bad ass car and it’s an insane swap. Just seeing the hp/weight difference is impeccable. It’s been my dream to LS swap a Miata and one day I hope it as bad ass as this one. Great job guys.
Also, your 100% right about the compression; anyone who says 11.5-12:1 or even a little more is too much for pump gas doesn't belong on a laptop tuning a car. Hell I've tuned an 11.8:1 setup on 87 and had no problem, albeit down on power but still I have a perfectly safe and efficient street cruise tune for an 11.8:1 416 LS on 87 regular gasoline. Knock count is still perfect it's just running a very conservative MBT.
my 2004 Buck Rainier 4.2L I6 is 11:1 on 87 oct. GM made the water jacket bigger and flow better to keep it cool. 275HP / 275 Lb Ft. If I could deck the heads and port them and run E85 to stop detonation , to get 350+ HP I would do it. I love my RWD Super luxury SUV.
How did you check for PTV clearance? I have a 6.0 with square port head and an ASA Cam and I always wanted to bump compression but wasn't confident on the ptv clearance
This build is so inspiring. I loved driving my NB Miata it was a pleasure to drive even stock. Way better handling than my FD RX7. I could only imagine how crazy a V8 Miata must feel. Makes me want to buy a Miata again. Keep it up.
Dude, such a badass little car. Admittedly, I’ve always liked the Miata. I always thought it carried subtle similarities to the RX-7 and even the Viper. The fact that your hood has the viper ram air cutout puts the icing on the cake. Love it!!
3rd Gen Guy agreed, the Chevy v6 is probably the better choice for most lightweight cars. For instance the v6 in the camaro weighs less than the gt86 flat four, and makes similar power to the typical supercharger kits on the gt86.
Sick miata man. So clean and I love the fact that it still looks MOSTLY stock. Doesnt sound it. But if it was at a car meet im sure people just walk past it.
It's crazy how back when I dabbled in Street Cars, 2003'ish, there was 1 Turbo Miata locally, putting down I believe 375whp (maybe a little more, but damn good numbers back then) on the factory 1.6l I think, and was a nightmare to race on the Highway. From a dig it couldn't hook, but from a 40 roll or so, sob hurt so many feelings, including mine... Crazy to see how far things have come. Also, I love the Shirts. Need to order me one shortly.
Love the Miata, it really is the new Cobra, which is a car I've been in love with for almost 40 years now. Love dogs too, great combination in a video! Show us more passes of the Miata. (It's called an MX5 here in Europe)
I keep thinking of getting a miata, even though I never really use drop tops (florida is too hot 8 months out of the year and to cold 2 months, so...), just because they're cheap and really good cars. The few I sat in had enough leg room and all of that for me and I'm at 6 foot. Was planning to get something to mod over time into a (don't hate) fast and furious type of deal. Always loved the body kits and all of that, making the car more unique, but a v8? That's insane. I didn't know that was possible. All of a sudden the idea of a mustang feels like a distant memory hahaha
Thanks for the great Video.Nothing like Horsepower in a light weight Car!I am a Drag racer for many years when younger and the feeling you get is worth the work involved for the results. My son who is 18 is putting another Stock 1.8 in his Miata today. We bought it with only 85,000 miles on it from a wrecked Miata and is a super nice engine in all aspects! He already has the Suspension set up the way he wants it.After this he wants a Hardtop then last is a Paint Job.He is a Senior in school so he pays as he goes.He loves his Cars!My question for you or any Professional Mechanic is what are your thoughts as being a Mechanic as a Career? He is still not sure what he wants to do as a Profession yet.Any feedback is Greatly appreciated.Your Miata,s Power,Suspension set up,and Paint Job look fantastic and thanks for showing other Miata owners what can be achieved with a great plan and of course Money.Young guys its fun but please drive responsible we want you to have fun but we want you back at the Dinner Table also.
My dream car. The only downside- driving it in Florida. I know nice weather and all but damn it would bore the Christ out of me come whip it in New York and you'll see what's good!
That car is so slick 35mph looks like 100! Thats a sweet ride. U wud think a super light car with pile of power would hook up...not. guess time for some sticky street radials hopefully the drivetrain is beefie nuff, but figure u have already adressed that. Wish i could tap 2 thumbs up! whaaaah snif snif!
What a nifty little sleeper! Now you need wide enough tires on the back to get the power to the ground... and probably a wheelie bar to boot, when it *DOES* hook up!🤣👍👍
Nice build; What CID shortblock and cam setup is this running? I'm guessing somewhere in the 408-427" neighborhood? It makes similar power to my 416 build. My NA setup is an LME shortblock with PRC heads, TSP cam/valvetrain package on FuelTech EFI. Makes around 550whp on MS109. I've always been a Mustang guy but it's amazing what these old pushrod style engines can put out. My other LS that's in the Colorado is a little 370 LQ9 based setup built for boost and almost more impressive than the 4 digit power it makes on a Gen 2 7685 is that it made over 400whp NA and it's a low compression build with a BTR tubo cam and it made that power on 93 Shell E10 from the pump.
Golden retriever madness! Lol love the dogs. Don't like miatas don't like ls's but I'll tell you watching your car grow is and always has been sick as hell.. might have a line on a 92 5.0 fox (my dream car) ... and I know you're a Chevy guy but I'd love to figure out a way to have u tune it! Keep up the good work with the videos!
that aint a miata thats a mini dodge viper
Really, its an AC Cobra.
I seen the thumbnail and thought I was a viper at first lol
I think I'm with Pyro, it's more like a mini AC Cobra lol, but yeah Pancho kinda looks like a viper in that thumbnail
sharkface m i think that miata would stroke a viper
@@Pyrochazm more like a GM cobra...
It looks like a mini viper 😂
I heard that the same designer worked on the Miata and the Viper.
@@hilossrt4yup that’s true, i’ve met the guy actually, it was in Monaco last year
Seeing/hearing "V8 Miata" just makes me smile everytime. Bad ass.
God this channel is good. A little bit of learning mixed with a little bit of entertainment and a bunch of cool cars.
Tracy Goodlett totally agree
Don't forget. DOGS!!!
Learning and burning!!! The only thing I can think of that goes together as well is a bacon cheeseburger.
Engine Masters did a video of progressively bigger heads on a mild short block and got better power across the band as they got bigger, even with a mild cam. Their conclusion: get the biggest heads you can afford and but the cam that fits the way you drive. Big heads help at any RPM.
You have to make a video with this thing on the drag strip. Being so little with the hp its gotta go
flying munk89 it's nothing without traction! Unless you've got DRs on it, it'll never hook from the dig.
Newzchspy yeah I know. And you know what that means..... he needs tubs lol
Is he going for zero to 60, Or 60 to I can do this all day?
flying munk89 let's all guess the 1/4 mile time. I'm gonna say 10.379. lol
He doesn’t need tubs if hes running small slicks witht the flares. You can definitely get it to hook up then.
Im guessing the one thumb down lives on the street you tested on 👍👍👍 lmao
Lmao nice
There's almost always one idiot who can't just walk away without negativity and it's against the law to shoot them lol
Haha good one
Those thumbs down aren't for the video, it's their opinion of their life.
ever since the "monster miata" I've wanted to build a v8 miata. Yours sounds and performs awesomely
hey look, another mazdaspeed guy. i used to own one. now i own an evo.
I used to work for a company that sold the brand to monster motorsports in California. I got to drive some of the most amazing builds. Was super fun.
Small block Chevy, Best engine ever made.
you can find them stuffed in every brand, model and type of car or truck on the planet.
not only did you pick up power but you improved the characteristics of the engine, seems more responsive/ explosive and seems to accelerate the engine much quicker
That's a cool ass miata
I love the way your friends face lights up when your on it :-) thumbs up
Seriously, priceless, lmao.
Somebody was having the time of his life!
The smile on your buddies face makes this video so much better. Seeing the joy he gets riding along shows really how fun that little monster is.
Dig the license plate....👍
Robert Evans - beat me to it
Bone stock
thats always been my dream setup. absolutley love that body style with the hardtop
If it wasnt for Cleetus i wouldnt be here. But im so glad i am XD
Cluck Feetus tho.
I love that when you get on it you can tell that you’re really “really” driving the car. You look so determined to push it to its absolute limits and it’s hilarious. I really like Pancho, but I have to say my favorite ever is Thunderbolt (Turbo Tom's Garage).
Numinous I agree
I want to see them 🆚
How did you check for PTV clearance? I have a 6.0 with square port head and an ASA Cam and I always wanted to bump compression but wasn't confident on the ptv clearance
That has to be the best miata iv ever seen. Much love to what you do and keep on making POWER!
This build is so inspiring. I loved driving my NB Miata it was a pleasure to drive even stock. Way better handling than my FD RX7. I could only imagine how crazy a V8 Miata must feel. Makes me want to buy a Miata again. Keep it up.
That thing gets up to the speed limit quick!
This made me tear. If I had mine set up like this I'b be crying a river of joy.
Dude, such a badass little car. Admittedly, I’ve always liked the Miata. I always thought it carried subtle similarities to the RX-7 and even the Viper. The fact that your hood has the viper ram air cutout puts the icing on the cake. Love it!!
Thank you for explaining everything in detail for people like me who do not know a lot. Your channel is great!
I love it when the exhaust sounds really choppy like that.
Jeremy reminds me of an early Commander Riker on Star Trek... Make it so Number One
Subscribed MOSTLY because of the detailed explanation on compression.
Ok it was really because of Poncho🤣
The passanger had a big ass smile as soon as he hit the throttle thats what its all about awesome job guys!!
Smiles all around when the car is accelerating. Love it!
Nothing like a few golden doggo's to finish up a vid
The passengers face says everything there is to know about this car!!!
Very cool!
You make me want an ls in my miata!
He makes me want an ls and a Miata...
3rd Gen Guy agreed, the Chevy v6 is probably the better choice for most lightweight cars. For instance the v6 in the camaro weighs less than the gt86 flat four, and makes similar power to the typical supercharger kits on the gt86.
Fuck that I'll I'll 2jzgte swap a miata
However the ls swap is just nasty
Few videos with a ls turbo miatas. Easy 800whp
I need to buy a miata for the ls7 I have sitting in my garage... damn that thing is bad ass
His non-stop smile in the passenger is brilliant
you guys look like having fun on coco beating the crap out of a v8 miata and i like that, cheers buddys for the work you put in it
Man you gotta get some slicks on it and take it to the strip!!
Well technically it’s on slicks road course slicks
Fasterproms Are you ever going to take it to the strip?
Tha Hoova its a miata bro miatas only like the curvy gay tracks not the straight non gay tracks
Ben Israel you should know you are gay
Screw the drag strip, take it on a road course or drifting !
Review video on everything that is done to the LS3 engine!!!!!!
Sick miata man. So clean and I love the fact that it still looks MOSTLY stock. Doesnt sound it. But if it was at a car meet im sure people just walk past it.
Thats awesome! I Finished building my v8 NB Miata on my channel too, What a perfect combo!
I hope you will spread some of that timing on Taylor Rays miatta when he’s got that running! a hard working dude that deserves some Fasterproms magic
Race neighbor
Do it for the subscribers
Do it for bofus
Do it for Ed
Do it for breakfast
Do it for pineapple on pizza
Hi im your uber driver haha
Best Uber ride ever 😃
Bro your miata is freaking awesome I love it. I’d buy it immediately if you were selling it nice work bro
This is slowly becoming my favorite UA-cam channel
Passenger's smile can cure cancer.
your buddy was just grinning his ass off on that test run. love it
What a proper build. Poncho looks like a blast
That smile on the passengerseat! Lights up my morning! 😄
It's crazy how back when I dabbled in Street Cars, 2003'ish, there was 1 Turbo Miata locally, putting down I believe 375whp (maybe a little more, but damn good numbers back then) on the factory 1.6l I think, and was a nightmare to race on the Highway. A bike is way faster
More timing with that much comp on pump fuel is amazing! Care to disclose how much timing you were able to run?
Love the Miata, it really is the new Cobra, which is a car I've been in love with for almost 40 years now. Love dogs too, great combination in a video! Show us more passes of the Miata. (It's called an MX5 here in Europe)
That’s the largest smile on all of UA-cam!!!! Love it I’m looking for 1 to build with my boys
I love the power gains and of course I love the pups!
Bonus dogs at the end? How much better can this channel get?
Passenger reaction said it all lmao
All ear to ear smiles and looking around at the awesomeness smoking out the back
Your such a Dork, Jeremy😂 "More Cow Bell"
Bloody awesome. Now just need to tub the rear and put on huge road legal drag radials I'd imagine.
I love the look of your Miata Jeremy. It looks like a mini viper to me. Now it just needs a big F1 procharger to finish it off
Jeremy drives like a maniac.. and I freakin love it!
When a passenger has to smile like that, you know its fun!
Your content is next level! Explaining things is so awesome.
Beautiful build...so clean!! Congrats man
Since that insane engine doesn't really need a comment, let me say this:
Not a huge fan of blue cars, but... DAMN! That paintjob is beautiful...
Awsome !!!!!!! You know it's good, when you and your passenger have an ear to ear grin every time you hit it. 😁😁
The smile on the passengers face the whole time says it all.

What a great car! Awesome build. Ready to try a rod-mod LS3 intake and see what it picks up?
One of the prettiest Miatas I've seen, nailed the stance.

You guys killed it. For real, actually, killed it.
Good GOD this Miata is SICK! Jeremy, I think you've convinced me to build a V8 Miata.
Love the paint job of the Panchoo. Rare paint scheme
That thing is a rocketship! I love it & the channel is the best. I cant wait until you get your dads vette tuned!
That car is so slick 35mph looks like 100! Thats a sweet ride. Always just the right amount of Golden Retriever in your videos, well done!
George ported the heads and installed a permanent smile lol!
That thing has to be terrifying to drive! 250 horsepower feels like a lot in a Miata!
Awesome!!! What flares/wheels and tires size are you running? Love the look!! Doing a v8 Miata also
Would love to see this on a race track. Like laguna sega or something similar. Awesome build.
I like seeing what's happening while Cleetus is not there and the other guys. :)
Also a 5 barrel holly at the end! :D
I was thinking about how much these v8 Miata's remind me of Shelby Cobra's as you started talking about it.
Any videos on the Miata build? Great looking car.
Now you need some boom tubes like the dale truck.
Also you have some of the best looking goldens
Great video! Not only informative but very fun to watch! Much appreciated
Great vids man ty for sharing your knowledge I've learned a lot watching your channel
I love golden retrievers. You are so lucky to have five of them
This isn't the little miata that could... This is the little miata that does.
Love the explanation of things in your channel man love it keep it going
Awesome job Jeremy. Loving the channel and poncho keep up the great work

Edit: Pancho vs Thunderbolt from TTG. Yes please.

Keep up the good work with the videos!
Love the paint on this car
That thing is an on off switch with that miata body wrapped around that v8.
Pancho it's a cool hot dog
My freaking dream car. Just have a 2001 miata with 100whp.
This man knows how to build a car, like I would. I like him.
