Spoiler alert! The MCU is Not Dead Yet. If it was, they would already have out of money to produce any new films after Quantumania and The Marvels. In Amphibia, Marcy Wu and Anne Boonchuy were also Not Dead Yet when we thought Marcy died in the last episode of Season 2, and when we thought Anne died in the last episode of the whole series.

Excellent video. Recently rewatched it. I forgot how much I liked this flick. I don’t think I realized how good we had it. Simple story. Well developed characters. Looks like an actual movie(I sound like Harry Styles). Good amount of humor without trying too hard. Excellent soundtrack. Underrated score. Images that look like stills from comic book panels. Gunn I think is up there with Raimi and Guillermo Del Toro(I’d love to see you tackle your love for Hellboy 2) in terms of comic book directors who just gets it.

The third act and the climax of the movie bring it down immensely (that garbage Ares twist, and the lame final fight & resolution that negates the entire message & theme of the film!), and on re-watch, Gal Gadot's performance doesn't really hold up. Diana being written and portrayed as a fish of out water is what makes her limited acting somewhat tolerable. In the sequel and in both versions of Justice League, she's completely stiff and wooden.

While I really like a lot of the points you made I also think it helps if you just don’t view every project the same. I LOVE Guardians for the reasons you give in this video, but not every movie is supposed to be the same. You said it yourself, comics are weird, and different stories require a different approach. No Way Home is such an area of controversy but I really liked it personally. It felt like a Spider-Man story. I don’t think it’s anywhere close to perfect from some arbitrary objective standpoint, but as someone who loves Spidey books, it felt like the most Spider-Man movie we’ve gotten with the character.

I think the MCU still has some great stories to tell, but just as much as I hope they finish the multiverse saga, I hope that they finish _with_ the multiverse saga. It needs to be put to rest, but I hate unfinished stories. I’m just afraid that the MCU movies will stop making enough money halfway through phase 5 and Disney will suddenly pull the plug on some potentially genuinely good films.

  • @nope5657

Vol. 3 is the last MCU film I will see in theaters unless something gets UNGODLY amounts of hype and praise. And I stopped seeing most of them in theaters to begin with since Endgame. And to be honest, I have no urge to re-watch most MCU films. But I do rewatch the GotG films. Often.
The MCU really has ruined how masses of people consume and understand basic storytelling, and I don't think that's dramatic. Legions of fans now think you need a decade of build up to tell a certain story instead of just...telling that story if a filmmaker wants to tell it. You have a legion of fans who think teases and easter eggs are important to narrative or ARE the narrative - hence why you constantly see this criticism from MCU stans: "It didn't do enough to expand the world."
You have entire legions of fans who think are more than happy to just swallow whatever they are fed without criticism and even worse, take all criticism as an attack or people just being haters. The MCU is virtually unable to be criticized, not in any real way, because the fans are legion and will say anything to disregard it no matter how good faith.

I think you nailed why this film works better than 95% of the MCU. James Gunn gets it and feeling and emotion is the key 100%. It's the exact same reason Iron Man 1 and 3 are so good. IMO, I really, and I mean REALLY, don't think the MCU is dead and any version of that phrase beyond the phrase itself, to me, feels like an over exaggeration. I get people's frustrations with Phase 4, but Feige isnt to blame for it. Despite the fact that I overall really enjoyed Phase 4, the lack of consistency in quality across Phase 4 boils down to the blame of one person and one person only: Bob Chapek. He took over as Disney's CEO sometime in 2020 and he was more business focused than creatively focused like Iger was before him. Because no movies were released that year due to the pandemic, Chapek wanted to make up for lost time (and most importantly, money) and rush out all of the MCU projects in production at the time so they could start releasing as soon as the following year in order to turn a profit. He gave Feige and the filmmakers barely ANY time to cook and although the end results of these projects varied from good to bad to somewhere in between, THIS man was the reason why we got 4 movies and 5 shows each year for 3 years in a row. Now that he's out and Iger's back in, there's MUCH more of a focus on quality than in quantity. All the delays we keep hearing about all these projects? That's just Feige and Iger making sure each project is given enough time to properly cook. Because of that, we're back to what we had before where it was like 2-3 movies and shows per year. So no, the MCU isn't dead. It just hit a bump, but it's working harder now to get itself back on track now that Chapek is out.

About humour/bathos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
AKA the basic human behaviour. They're never going to stop with the humour because it's more realistic and makes the characters more relatable. psychologically healthy people gravitate towards people and things that can make them laugh and feel like they're having fun. The humour is probably the only thing about these movies that keeps the audience coming back. Feeling like they HAD FUN!!! Humour is used to enhance drama because once you can make the audience laugh, you get them on your side. You get them to give $h!T what the characters are going through.
This is why the Zack Snyder films are so horrible. Superman died and the movie had done literally nothing to make me like him. He was a moody arrogant moron for most of the film and they expected me to care when they killed him. It was the most I'd ever laughed at a movie and I was genuinely happy he couldn't hurt anymore innocent people.
Think about the people in your life who you enjoy being around the most. They're probably funny.
Also about comic book movie fatigue. When I went to see Endgame there were kids who weren't even born when Avengers hit cinemas. You don't have to worry about people getting bored of the MCU when new fans are literally being born everyday.
Captain Marvel made 1.1 BILLION $$$ and has an "A" cinemascore. Angry manbabies on the internet affected nothing. There are at least 305 thousand scumbags on the internet according to Geeks+Gamers subscriber count. The MCU should never have been making movies for those kinds of people.
If Ghostbusters (a film that's much better than any comic book movie) came out today, you'd have 35 year old man babies crying that there were too many jokes and demanding that if a sequel is made it should have the same tone as a Bourne movie. Ridiculous.
I also love how people rarely give examples of humour undercutting anything. It's just a general statement like they're too lazy to think of a criticism so they just go with one that's been thrown around message boards: music not memorable, cinetatography bad etc.

Fiegi stole the concept of GOTG from James Gunn and transplanted it to his Avengers along with their humor in Phase 4. James Gunn created the world-building of the cosmic side of the MCU which Feigi used for Captain Marvel which was a blatant rip-off.

I recently watched this movie again and it's just garbage, I'm mad at y'all for massively overhyping this mid-trash. This movie is just all plot, exposition, and boring action. If you believe otherwise, it's because you first saw this movie when you were younger and had lesser taste. There is so little character and emotion to this movie, it's completely over-exaggerated how much credit people give it for this. James Gunn showed what he could do with this type of movie with The Suicide Squad. That movie was genuinely great because it led with character and emotion first, meanwhile Guardians leads with plot, exposition, jokes that are sometimes funny, and boring action.

Have you ever considered that *you* might be the individual of “lesser taste”?

while TSS is his magnus opus, yes... GOTG is still great and I'm the biggest disney marvel hater on this planet

@@ThePonderer Yes, I have considered it, and the conclusion I have come to is that I am not. The individuals with lesser taste are the ones who like corporate gobbledygook with no soul or artistic integrity made.

@@nalday2534 Have you watched it recently? I feel like the people saying the modern MCU isn't what it used to be haven't actually rewatched the older MCU movies in a long time, because while the modern MCU movies are also bad, the earlier ones are eve worse. They're getting better. The earlier MCU movies had nothing close to something as good and artistic as Doctor Strange 2 or Black Panther 2. Those are the only MCU movies I've seen that I was mildly impressed by, and I've seen all of them. GOTG1 is the definition of milquetoast, generic, ugly digital diarrhea, lifeless studio garbage.

I’m so glad I’m not the only person who’s cursed with this
