    Omg thank you Steph! Literally you're a godsend. You are the ONLY UA-camr who provides quality conent on the true life of an accountant. I left my liberal arts college where I was studying international affair and now I am serious about accounting because of the versatility, practical skills and job security. I will always keep watching your videos. You're an amazing combination of beauty and smarts and youre such a positive influence:)

      +TaelurAlexis Awww thank YOU sweetheart! Your comment made my day and I'm just glad that you and others enjoy hearing me talk about accounting haha :) I could probably talk about accounting for hours and it's nice to do it where people understand! I totally understand your reasons for choosing accounting and I think you will be very happy with you choice :)

      +Stephienese Definitely a godsend, perfect definition, I am so happy I just found your channel! I'm currently an undergrad student working towards the accounting profession and its been hard to find anything on UA-cam (or very many other places to be honest) about it. You wouldn't happen to have any advice or videos or specific knowledge on the tax side of public accounting would you?
      I'm not really sure where I want to go in accounting, but I'm currently working in a small time (only about 600 clients) tax and audit firm. I work directly with the owner about 6 hours per week and it is my fourth tax season right now. All I know is that I enjoy doing the manual input of taxes and learning about them and being able to just work with tax, but I've never experienced anything else in the field so I'm open to new experiences.
      My main question is how I should approach things after I graduate. I want to work for a couple years and start working on credits towards an MBA, as well as get my CPA as soon as I can. I would like to work in public accounting and work my ways towards one of the big four, specifically pricewaterhouse (since they are the primary offices near where I currently reside).
      Oh, also, I've done research into it myself and talked with my boss about it, but would you say that being able to fluently speak both english and japanese would be a decent plus to my resume? I'm currently studying japanese, I love the culture and the country and its history and everything about it haha; but I'm not sure if it will really come in handy when it comes to my paygrade. Maybe down the line? This is just a side question, so feel free not to answer (if you answer this comment at all).
      Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read all of that, I really really appreciate it! Now to go binge watch the rest of your videos! Thanks again.

      Rob B. Neither. LOL. I live is south east asia. So basically the weekend is when I cramp everything in the gym, studying, and groceries. My classes are after work hours and I haven't been signed to clients yet so things are good so far and luckily the partner for my team is very supportive about my study. That helps me a lot so that I won't be assigned to any clients out of town. I'll be home by 11PM and wake up the next morning at 5AM and repeat. All you need is motivation and determination to finish what you've started. Oh and a shish ton of coffee for sure :P

      that is incorrect. You get "banked over time pay" that is spent when you take your mandatory vacation time... So no. And it's frustrating because people don't tell you that...

    • @dseer13
      @dseer13 7 років тому

      Yes no extra money at all... they put it toward your vacation time, so while you're on vacation you're "getting paid" your "banked overtime hours". I don't know why people don't tell people this...

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  7 років тому +4

      +Blair Waldorf for the big 4 & mid tier, we don't get any overtime pay. The increase in hours is technically built into your compensation (salary, benefits, PTO) & hopefully flexibility. Depending on your job position you get either 3 -5 weeks of vacation. However, the overtime hours you work don't accrue to more vacation. I hope that makes sense. Not sure how it works for smaller firms though.

    Hi Steph, a video about internship do's and don'ts or how to succeed in the first year of public accounting (esp for big four) would be great :)! I'm starting my internship soon and I'm nervous about doing well haha...

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  8 років тому +5

      +Ophie O I can definitely do that! Nervous is good, it shows you care :) As an overall thought, just have a positive, up for anything attitude... ask lots of questions and take notes. Volunteer to do things, even small things like scanning or copying something. If you are charged with ordering meals or coffee, be sure to double check the orders. I really think that an intern's/new associate's most important characteristic is attitude and willingness to learn. I'll put it all in a video though and will try to get it up before you start :) Congrats, btw, that's huge to be doing an internship! You're gonna make so much $$$$, get that overtime girrrrl! :)

      +yamilex de pena I haven't decided because i would rather stay in finance because I have a degree in it, it pays more, not as much hours as auditing, and it's my passion. But there are very little opportunities for finance jobs where I live. There are a few accounting opportunities but I don't have a background in accounting and I would have to go back to school for about 3 more semesters to satisfy the 150 credit requirement to take the cpa exam (I graduated with 124 credits). So in other words I'm still deciding lol

I know I love business, but I am afraid that I will be missing out on something great in one of those fields. I feel as if I am leaning towards Finance, but I am still skeptical about Job opportunities.

    My question for the next video is. If you are an individual looking to start a family soon and care more about the work/life balance in a sense (of course not saying you just want to work 40 hours), is going the mid-tier route from the start a good idea or do you think it is absolutely necessary to start at the Big 4 to be successful in this industry? I know the Big 4 will provide a better outcome and more opportunities but you know some people would rather have a little more free time for family and probably be content with climbing up the ladder at the mid-tier.

    Thank you for all of this solid insight! Definitely struggling with opportunities to either do Big 4 (EY) or Mid Tier (GT). Big4 seems to burn you out, but has great training and value with opportunities afterward. Mid-tier seems not to carry as much weight on resume it seems, but people seem to stay longer at the firm. Any suggestions?

      @@frisdaferdiana2735 hello and congratulations on your internship. My career took a different path after my internship and worked for a Defense Contractor and Renewable energy firm as a Program Manager. Albeit vastly different than what crossroads you’re facing, I have learned that while certain company “prestige” may sound nice, it’s the networking and work experience that offers the greatest value. Once I stepped away from the accounting world, I did realize that industry does have a strong “kool-aid” culture. Don’t feed into that too much. “Go where celebrated, not tolerated” and you’ll be fine. Best of luck!

    I work at a local firm in a rural town as a staff accountant. The biggest challenge is working with the mom & pap businesses who do their own bookkeeping but have no clue what they're doing. Then it's my job to clean up their mess. I work around 70 hours per week during the tax season, but I'm able to bank my hours so I can take more time off in the off season. It's pretty flexible and family-friendly for the most part. It's also very independent, the owner (my manager) has enough work to do himself so he doesn't have time to boss us around. Which is the way things should be. If you can't do your job without someone micromanaging you, then you don't have enough responsibility and integrity to be an accountant. That's what I like most about the firm: the amount of trust our manager has in us and the amount of independence he gives us.

    Hi Stephienese,
    Thanks for doing these vids - very helpful! I have a few questions I hope you don't mind answering:
    1) Can someone in their 30's get into Big 4 providing have Accounting background and working towards CPA?
    2) Is it worth someone in their 30's looking to get into Big 4 considering has family obligations?
    3) Is Big 4 honestly more suited to people in their twenties, i.e., younger people most likely can work 60+ hours a week?
    4) How many hours a day does one spend at a desk in Big 4 jobs? I currently spend 8hrs per day at a desk and wouldn't mind something where I get to move more.
    Many thanks!

      Don't give up! I was in the same situation in 2009 when I had an offer from a Big 4 firm rescinded right before I graduated. Luckily I took that down time as an opportunity to pursue the CPA while working as an accountant at the New York Times. I continued to apply for Big 4 firms in the Virginia area while I was completing sections of the CPA and was able to secure an audit role with my firm a year later.
      Best of luck and always keep your options opened. Its not about where you start in your career but what you do with it.

      Don't give up. Big four is not for everyone and you don't even need the big four to be successful in accounting. They will work the hell outta you for 70K an year. Research and decide where you see yourself working (based on your strengths, how you want the work environment to be, etc.)

    Not sure why people always want to be general about their compensation. I don’t think it should be a taboo subject. Sharing your salary allows you to compare to others and find out if you’re making what is fair in the market. It’s a win win for both you and people you share it with.

      @WithStephie  8 років тому

      +Myriam Bamba Awww thank you for taking the time out of your day, especially with having kiddos :) I would recommend public accounting for parents but I would suggest a mid-tier firm or smaller. Going into public accounting, you'll just have to know that longer hours are expected during busy season but most firms have programs like reduced hours for reduced pay. If you are interested and go through the interview process, just be upfront about what demands you have with your kids and if you'd be able to have flexibility. It's going to be demanding though so you might have to work more at home or after the kids go to bed especially during busy season.

    -I've seen several people move from the Big 4 to industry or a smaller accounting firm - do you think it's just the long hours that get to people over time? And why do you think that others stick it out and stay with the larger firms over the long run - do you think it's the higher pay/ better job experience/ or maybe some people just enjoy the higher demands of a larger/ Big 4 firm?

      Many people leave the big 4 because of the amount of hours you are required to put in. Not like they specifically tell the amount of hours you will be working per week right before you start. But, once you get assigned a client then you start realizing it will require a lot of time to complete and you will have to work overtime to get the job done on time or you are fired. It's stressful but many people go through that route just for the experience to add to their resume so they can ask for more money at their other job. You gain a lot of knowledge but you burn out quickly. You get no overtime.

You see I don't like working in an environment or at a desk where two people sit at, I'd rather work in a cubicle or in an office where I can hang stuff up and do what I want with the space. While in school, I know interning is great junior/ senior year. But when you got your job offer was it to start after your senior year? Or did you start after you finished your classes to get to the 150 hour threshold for the exam? And technically you don't have to have your liscense to be able to work for the firm but you have to get it eventually correct? This has always confused me lol but great video as usual. Thanks so much for sharing!!

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  8 років тому +1

      +Luis Antonio My job offer was after my senior year and I could have extended it longer if I had gone the graduate degree route. But keep in mind, when I graduated my senior year, I had taken extra classes to get 150 hours. They're usually flexible depending on your graduate date (for example, if you graduated in May, you could start in September to have the summer off to study/ chill). For the Big 4, they want you to be CPA exam eligible when you start. You don't have to have your license when you start, you just have to get it before you can be promoted to manager & to get a bonus if your firm provides it (normally a few thousand if you pass within 1 - 2 years of starting at your firm). My mid-tier firm we do hire on people who may be a few credit hours shy of being CPA eligible. These people either take classes at night or online classes to meet the 150 hour threshold. I hope that makes sense! lol

I was a student during the busy season too. :/ I got no training at all was just thrown out there on engagements. Always was told "SALY." No employee moral at all. No holiday parties. No Training. Nothing. I got a full-time offer 2 months before I graduated. I was going to get a raise of 10k+ after graduation, but I quit one month after graduation and before my raise. I read the caption of your video and expected the salaries to START at 100k/year given that you mentioned you worked a minimum of 55 hours a week. Why would anyone in their right mind work 55-80 hours a week for only 50-75k/year?!?! If you do the math to calculate an hourly rate, you would make more working as a manager at McDonalds! I currently make 125k/year plus a 15-20% annual bonus working in hedge fund accounting with no CPA or advanced degree and I work 9-5. No overtime ever

      Good point John. However accounting offers a level of job security that finance simply does not. Plus, many accountants use public accounting to build a solid foundation and reference before they transition into industry where they can earn their 6 figure salaries and finally have that long coveted work-life balance.

      +John Patrick Sullivan agreed!! I've been approached with hedge fund accounting positions before but wasn't sure what it all entails since I don't deal with fund accounting very often. I don't work for the firm I talked about in this video anymore, partially for that reason.

      You can get a job in partnership accounting either on the asset management side or the administration side. Asset managers being large or small investment firms, hedge funds, private equity or venture capital firms. Nowadays almost all investment firms outsource their administration (ie: fund accounting, tax, financial reporting) to administrators (ie: State Street, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citco, BNY Mellon, BBH), but asset managers always have a small team of in house hedge fund accountants to review and oversee the work prepared by the administrators. I spent 13 years working for 4 different administrators and am now in my first position on the asset management side. The asset management side is much easier hours because you're just doing the reviewing vs. all of the work. Asset managers love people with CPAs too.

    • @Pat7629

      Those are not accurate. It also depends largely on what city you are located in. A HF accounting job in NYC or Boston for example that pays 100K will only pay 70K somewhere like Florida or Texas. I've always worked in Boston, which is an "A" market.

    Thanks for the video. I just saw it. I am currently a pre-nursing student, I have applied to nursing schools and was even accepted to some but science is not my thing. my GPA is 3.3, I don't know if I will get into my current school nursing program and I think transferring isn't an option because I can end up not like nursing and ruining my GPA. I have always been good at math and some other skills that accountants do, I am confused right now but your videos are very informative. Thank you.
