    I love your accounting videos and vlogs!!! I was just recently promoted from AP to Staff Accountant while I’m still working on my bachelors. I noticed in a lot of my accounting classes there were many people just like me who were promoted up despite not having a bachelors. But, that doesn’t mean the bachelors degree isn’t 🔑 and I’m definitely going to get my masters and sit for the CPA.

      Hi just a question, what is AP? Is that something in accounting? Like a starter point?

    • @SoAnxious718
      @SoAnxious718 5 років тому +6

      Simple Creations it can be a starting point, depending on the company. However you would need to go to school or network with accountants on the GL side for mentoring before being considered for a staff accountant position.AP stands for Accounts Payable, on that team you pay the bills and non-payroll contractors and correspond with vendors. Some accounting knowledge is needed but it’s mostly technical transaction handling.

      @@WithStephie Thank you, but I'm not a professor. I do, however, have a high school class full of teenagers that are in in-school suspension, and we are discussing careers possibilities. I want them to see that there is more out there than working in low skill/low pay jobs. In their minds an accountant is a little old man that counts cash all day, smokes cigars, and speaks with a southern accent (rolling my eyes). Your video allowed me to show them that there is a lot more to it than that. Thanks again. :)

    I'm a CPA and CMA in public accounting, nearing retirement. (I'm tax, but also lots of A&A.) I will show your video to my senior-year HS niece who has a math/technical mind suitable for the accounting profession!
    Some comments: Tax in private accounting is usually ASC 740 work for the tax provision on their financial statements. And in larger (some) companies, they prepare their own tax return.
    In large SEC-reporting companies, the top accounting/finance people almost always come from public accounting firms. Almost never do they start as staff accountants at the company, then rise to CFO/Controller. If you're not an (at-least) CPA manager at a "Big 4" accounting firm, you likely will never be hired to be a CFO of a company like GE or Apple. Reason is simple: The CPA may already be familiar with the company - as an auditor of that company! And the CPA will be knowledgeable of the complex SEC, PCAOB financial reporting and audit requirements. You dont get that knowledge on the company rising-staff accountant route. It only comes from public accounting.
    I highly recommend the CPA credential over any others, including a MBA degree. It has given me the most professional respect and door-openings. And if your goal is a CPA license, I strongly advise you to get the Audit designation rather than the General designation. (These are California designations. Some states may have different names for these two.) Yes, Audit is harder and takes a few years to get the required audit hours. But you will be a much-better accountant overall. Good news: Even if you go for the General just to get the magical "CPA" letters after your name, you can always later get the Audit designation.

Did any of them do it just as adjuncts while they still maintained a full time career doing perhaps any of the things you mentioned in this video? Thanks.

    Hi Stephie, Question: I'm 30 years old, working on my CPA but don't want to go Public (Auditing/Tax and the long hours don't interest me. I prioritize flexibility). Do you think getting a CPA will open more doors for me outside of Public Accounting to well-renown companies, such as a Spotify or HBO, even though I don't have experience in Public Accounting? Do I need Public Accounting experience to go far? If so, I may consider joining a firm a bit more

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  3 роки тому +2

      Hi there! Yes I still think having a CPA is great for marketability and most management/ above positions ask for licensing. CPA is more all around accepted and shows your technical accounting possibilities too.
      In my experience, most large Fortune 500 companies ask for public accounting experience, especially if you want a higher paid role like manager or above. Even some senior accounting positions ask for PA experience as preferred.
      Those two combinations make you much more competitive in the job market but you don't absolutely need to have them if you have an "in" with a company like a friend who works there. It's possible but otherwise it's much more difficult in my opinion. I hope that helps a little!

      Carlos Lopez Rodriguez It depends on which state you are as different states will have different requirements. In California, you will need to complete 150 credits that meet CalCPA requirements, pass 4 sections of the CPA exam, pass PETH (Ethics Exam), and 1 year experience under CPAs. All these things could happen at the same time. Such as you could take the exams while obtaining the experience requirement.

      The CPA exam has 4 sections: FAR (Financial), AUD (Audit), REG (Regulation), and BEC (Business Environment and Concepts). You have 18 months to pass all 4 sections. Once you pass the CPA exam, it depends where you live to know if you need to pass the PETH (Ethic Exam). When you are all done with the exams, you need to meet the experience qualification (again, it’s various in different states) to apply for the CPA license. Good luck on your CPA journey!

      I have the answer for you, stay away from public accounting. Throughout school you'll be pressured and be brainwashed into believing the ONLY way to build a career in accounting is to go to public. I work in public accounting right now, it is a nightmare. No matter what firm you'll go to, you'll work long hours doing work that you don't even understand with so much stress. Not only that, but with the hours you'll put in you're basically making the same as a retail worker. You'll also be pressured to pass your CPA exams when you have absolutely no time to study. Public accounting is the worst. If I knew it'd be this bad, I would've never joined. I'd have rather gone to private.
