    It's not the math that's hard in accounting. The reading comprehension, understanding the situation, applying the principles, and etc are it!

    Many students are afraid of being an Accountant because it involves mathematical equations or operations and they are not really good with it. But actually only the basic one are included with this course. You just need to value "Integrity" and just work hard

      I really don't understand why people think accounting is math
      There is literally *no* math involved
      LOL...
      Sure, it's hard; I'm not going to deny that. But there is no math, although granted, computer science, programming, and data analytics skills are highly helpful and sometimes directly involved in the work.
      But like, math? No, there is barely any math. If you know logarithms, you're good (for certain functions within managerial accounting and costing activities + WACC, CVP analysis, and other similar tasks), but there is no like, actual *math*. You probably don't need more than Calculus for most tasks.
      It's mostly about how you *apply* the mathematics you learn. But also, if you're just doing financial accounting, data analytics skills are useful, but there is very little to no actual *math* per se.

    Thank you for explaining the more deeper details of accounting. I've been working as a contractor doing Accounts Payable for about a year, and as of right now my duties are to deal with invoices from suppliers making sure money gets paid. I would say its definitely a job if you are introverted and don't like to deal with many people and having professionalism.
    It's not for everyone but from what I have experienced so far you're on the computer most of the day making sure the right details are correct.

      What’s the difference ?

    • @idkrachel
      @idkrachel 4 роки тому +9

      @@heymollietchen Personally, while working at a small accounting firm I was preparing Notice to Readers (inputting the trial balance, preparing journal entries, adjusting account balances, etc. to prepare a company's financial statements), preparing tax returns of all kinds , and working on audit and review engagements. Usually if you work at a larger accounting firm, you're put into a specific department like audit or tax. From what I know, working in industry in an entry level position means that you're doing A/P, A/R or payroll for the company that you work for. If you're just starting out, I'd suggest working at a small or midsized firm so you can get a variety of experience and figure out what area you'd like to work in.

My mom works at home and i do not want to do that. That is another reason that i think that this is the job for me and i also want to work at a desk which a lot of other people do not want.

One other thing I wanted to mention is accounting doesn't involve as much math as most people think. If you really enjoy math and want to use it every day I would check out actuaries!

      Look for companies that have Entry Level positions and say Accounting degree PREFERRED! A preference and a REQUIREMENT are 2 different things, I try to stress that to people all the time when looking for jobs!
      I got my position by selling them on my strong Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLookups, etc..and had samples/work from my College courses, got the job and get paid pretty much the same as an Accountant with an Associate's degree.
      I had some Payroll experience too, which probably helped, but I got my certificate yearrrss ago, so this job was a MIRACLE! You can do it without an internship, GO FOR IT!!

    im going to major in accounting, math isn't really my strength so im worried im going to fail lol :( as an accountant do you have to do a lot of math manually or is it just all on Excel and other softwares?

      So to answer your question excel trumps all but you can do the majority of accounting with a basic calculator

    I’m nearly complete with my bachelors. I worry because my average accounting gpa is about 3.5. Will it be hard to get into the field? A lot of schooling is just taking a test then moving on, it feels a bit overwhelming to think about working. Do I need to know have retained everything I’ve learned? I feel unprepared, even though I personally love accounting.

      The CPA exam isn't a requirement! They tend to make more (depends on a lot of variables of course) but if you just want to become an Accountant without taking the CPA exam, you definitely can.
      If you do, you can work while studying for the CPA exam also.

      Thanks! In my experience, accountants do very little presentations. Of course the higher up you get, like most jobs, the more meetings and presentations you have but in the 4 1/2 years I've worked as an accountant I've never given a presentation. Basic social skills are required, as in most jobs, but nothing out of the ordinary. Hopefully that answers your question.

    • @SaraMarie
      @SaraMarie  7 років тому +2

      I'm not sure there's much you can do. But I would suggest finding a study buddy to work problems with and a study spot. One of my friends and I would go to McDonalds (I know not the healthiest but who cares when you're in college) and we would get lunch and work on problems together. It was especially nice when we did homework and had a limited amount of tries because you would basically have double the number of times you could check your answers. Hopefully that helps!
