  • Judder is maybe well known but still annoying and I am wondering why there is this 24 fps to be cinematic dogma for videos, that are being watched via streaming services, when judder is caused by exactly this combination of technology.
In this video you will find the explanation of how judder is caused and I am shooting three videos at the framerates of 24, 30 and 60 fps to generate the judder test videos linked below, so you can check out on your systems when and how judder occurs in your technical environment. Please let me know in the comment section what you experience and what you opinion about 24 fps for streaming videos is. I would recommend to created videos in a 30 fps timeline if judder is to be avoided.

Vielen Dank für die Zusammenfassung, trifft genau meine Erfahrungen. Und ich stelle mir genau die selben Fragen ... mittlerweile ignoriere ich die Sony-60fps-Shooter-Tipps. Weiter so!

Vielen Dank! In sonst keinem Player...

Thanks for doing all of this and also go above and beyond by supplying separate videos to ensure the framerate stays intact. I've been encountering this after a travel trip and realized that even though 30fps with 180 degree shutter angle looks OK for static shots, when I am traveling panning everywhere, the motion blur prevents you from seeing any detail at all. Couple that with modern LCD displays lacking motion clarity compared to CRT but I don't have a CRT to confirm, maybe black frame insertion displays could help.
If I was shooting a planned video or movie, sure I got the time to slowly pan or test out pans but during travels it's run and gun. Been contemplating shooting 60fps next time and I agree with you, chasing the cinematic look drives me nuts. Grading everything blue or yellow, underexposing, wide aspect ratios and grain to name a few.

good summary :-) "cinematic" is more than fps, right? If you are using Davinci Resolve: Have you ever tried the adding motion blur functionality? It is in the same tab as noise reduction.

24fps: judder noticeable in all speeds
30fps: judder most noticeable under 15 secs, almost unnoticeable in slower speeds
60fps: there's a bit of noticeable judder, but I think it's the camera adjusting the exposure or something similar.

YT is full of 2 very stupid recommendations: shoot 24p and use 180'. AS IF any of those experts got ever shown at any cinema with a cinema 24p projector :)
We all view and get viewed in 59,94 (progressive!) in 99% of cases independent of PAL vs NTSC region (these ancient words need to be forgotten a decade ago) - so we need to shoot accordingly.
Now for the 180' degree. Shoot sunrise with 60', 120', 180' and 360' - why no difference? Cause it's got to do something with the movement, a fast one with that - so that the motion blur is pleasant to our eye. But 30p 180' and 60p 360' gets totally identical motion blur - so maybe the rule isn't a rule? And what if we use the same equivalent of angle for 24p but shoot in 60p - ain't that gonna be thr same but sharper due to FPS increase?
Answer is simple - there's yet a book to be written on these new FPS, cause very few actually played and understood the effect of the same blur with high modern FPS, other still retell that hundred year old tale of the 180 rule, which wasn't a rule even back then.
Bottom line, folks, most of us are not Spielbergs and won't get to the DCI beamer, don't shoot 24 until you got a movie contract signed.

The example videos you linked show the exact issue I am having. However, I don't see where you offered a solution to prevent this or fix this in post, beyond simply shooting in higher framerates. Great topic either way!!

Hi Gage, if it is judder you got then you never know what device people will watch your videos on so the only best guess solution is to go with 30 fps since you cannot do "multiple fps videos" so that the playing device could pull the correct fps. There are some TVs that offer "cinema mode" that do some software based optimization but there is currently no standard solution. I am really asking myself why the "cinematic communitiy" insists on 24 fps when streaming videos, also with Netflix, I do not get it. There are some solutions being offered to keep your panning speed below 7 seconds for one field of view distance but for my understanding this is just a workaround. I would recommend to shoot at 30 fps and maybe do not use the 180° rule exactly to get better motion blur.

Hello! I just finished testing my Sony XH90 65 inch. No noticeable judder for 60 fps.Acceptable to minimal judder for 30 fps, mainly mistaken for motion blur, on only in the first three short pans, of 5 to 12 seconds. The longer the shot the less noticeable the effect. For 24 fps the judder is the worst, an issue that bothered me a lot since I've got my tv but I mistaken it for stuttering ( described on Rtings as an effect on how long an image is retained on screen).
My camcorder shoot in 50 fps only and the TV panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz, not a multiple.I'll make a similar test with 50 fps footage to see how worse it gets.
As a solution, it's stated that the panel of XH90 (X900H in USA) has a Variable Refresh Rate, from 48 to 120Hz, but only for HDMI inputs, not for native playback apps. Some clever guy might be able to write an algorithm for framerate conversion on-the-fly without judder, even with a slight speedup of the movie (as from NTSC to PAL conversion).

I also saw a video on this topic with some TVs having some special modes for it but nothing worked too well. From my understanding the solution should be very simple: the tv just needs to read out the fps of the video and then adapt the refresh rate. I have no idea why this is not happening

im so confused about all this. Im just starting my youtube journey and I dont know if I should shoot 24, 25 or 30fps. I dont want to start creating videos in 24fps only to realise I should have used 25fps or 30fps.

    • @ego-shooters
      @ego-shooters  9 місяців тому +1

Don't worry, confusion will go away. My rule of thumb is: As soon as you are shooting stuff that includes panning and the videos got high-quality content: 30fps (or 29.97fps depending on the camera). I actually always intend to shoot at 24fps for my talking head stuff to save some storage space since files sizes are smaller then, but I always forget to change the settings since I do not have a preset for 24fps. If you are getting across this "cinematic means 24fps and nothing else" - my tip is - ignore it and make yourself aware of the technical background. The promote 24fps with a shutter angle of 180° which results in a shutter speed of 1/48 (=so around 1/50). Then based on that it is about motion blur only so you also can shoot at 30fps and set your shutter speed to 1/50 --> Problem solved. In Germany when shooting indoors with electrical light I need to set the shutter speed to 1/50 anyhow since the AC is at 50Hz to avoid flickering. Just an additional fact that can calm you down: Most of the newer action moview shoot at higher fps because green-screen masking does not like motion blur. I read that Lord of the Rings was shot at 48fps and they later reduced it to 24 in the final post production process. There are also standard features in e.g. Davinci Resolve to increase motion blur exactly for these reasons. So my best tip to solve your confusion: Shoot 30fps/29.97fps with a shutter speed around 1/50 and you will get "cinematic motion blur" and reduce judder since you harmonized the screen refresh rate and fps. I hope I could help.

I don't get this "Let's make Internet videos CiNeMaAaAaTiC" mentallity, is just seems silly as it is a completely different medium. 30fps should be the standard for media made for the Internet, yet I see straight-to-UA-cam short films and amateur movies using 24fps and ridiculously wide aspect ratios just because that's what "real" movies do I guess.
