Good video, saved me like $800. Perfect amount of detail and description without unnecessarily drawing it out. Please make more XT5 or GM 3.6L videos. Thanks
Glad it helped!
I'm so glad you posted this! Ours is doing the same thing and of course right before vacation. Thank you.
Excellent. Finally someone has explained the mystery. I have a 2017 gmc acadia, have the exact problem, started happening at about 60,000 miles. Temp gauge would drop to Cold, Driver assist caution comes on and engine fan motor turn on and stay on whether engine was hot or cold. My quick fix has been to disconnect the battery and everything goes back to normal for several months. It typically happens once every 5 months, winter or summer and typically after running 60 mph for 15 miles. So far the car has 97,0000 miles on it, so i've been doing this 2 or 3 times a year. Thank you for the great video. I'm debating on having it fix or not.
im glad I was able to help!
This just literally happen to me and at the exact same mileage imma try the battery quick fix rn
I have a 2018 GMC Acadia six-cylinder I replaced the temperature cooling sensor in the same on this video obviously had the battery disconnected. It went off for a couple hours drove it about 50 miles and the steering assist came back on and fans came back on, was doing exact same thing as a faulty, coolant sensor, as soon as I disconnect the battery, everything went back to normal, I did have a check engine code before so I’m thinking if you delete that code it may just go off. Will see you tomorrow after 50 miles. If it does it again, maybe I would have to change the radiator sensor to.
OK Thanks yes I just hit 60k and it came on I'll do this in a few thanks
@@salthebodyguy6890 did it ever come back on? Mine has did it and we did the steering assist once gave us 17 codes. Did the battery thing once it stayed off for almost a year. Came back on and cleared it stayed off for atleast a month. We want to change temp sensor but cant reach it with hands. An no money to take it to be fixed.
Thanks very much! I could not have done mine without your excellent video.
Thank you for an excellent video. Goodness knows I have tried making videos which might help others with similar problems, but people like you make it look easy. Thanks, I can confidently go to the dealer or mechanic and know exactly what to tell them so I am not taken advantage of.
Excellent work, very detailed. Thanks
I think this is exactly what’s happening with my 2014 Silverado. It is also giving me a ‘Service Stabilitrak’ message though. Thank you for making this video. Very helpful. Also, for what it’s worth, I don’t think you talked too much. I appreciate all the info!
Glad it helped.
I appreciate the comment
I was going to do this repair but I didn't have to !! Try removing the negative lead on your battery for a few moments first. It cured mine and it hasn't come back yet. It can't hurt to try. Good luck.
Did yours come back? This just came up on mine and unhooking the battery cleared it for now.
@@lukepruitt719 Yes, it occurs once in a while but hasn't in a couple months now.
It definitely works! I'm sure this is temporary but now you have a heads up on what's going to happen and can prepare for it. Thanks
black electrical tape over the check engine light works well too. ;)
LOL, that too. Just had mine fixed for the paltry sum of $565. Not too bad for replacing a thermostat.@@ottodetroit
Well structured video. Thanks for timestamps.
I appreciate the explanation, was wonderign what the steering assist had to with a thermostat message code. Your video was very beneficial and will help me when discussing the issue with the dealership.
Thank you for your video, im actually having this same problem with my Acadia and will do it myself, great tutorial!
I'm having the same issue with my 2019 GMC Acadia. Your video was so helpful and very informative. Keep talking because I'm listening diligently to your instructions. Hopefully, I can find a reliable mechanic who can do the job...
Thanks, will do!
I have acadia 2021, and same issue I’ve been faced, it’s really informative 🤝👍🏻
Thank you Bro you were thorough with this video keep doing it this way.
You bet
Thank you Falcons Garage! Excellent video. Completed the temp sensor, thermostat replacement today. While it was apart, I replaced the coil packs and plugs as well.
After reassembling, the P0128 code hasn’t returned. Unfortunately, I have three new codes P0018, P0021, & P0024. I’m confident I reconnected all the electrical connections, just can’t help but wonder what else happened.
Any chance you (or anyone else) has experienced those codes newly after performing the maintenance actions in this video?
Edit:
I had the orange and blue wiring connectors swapped. It’s running great now. No codes!
Great video! I just had a similar problem in my 2017 Acadia. The steering message intermittently came on and sometimes the AC wouldn’t work. Finally, I got those two problems along with the temp gauge staying in full cold and a check engine light. I wound up replacing the temp censor figuring it was the most likely cause and the easiest thing to do. It was harder than I thought and I wound up breaking the connector so I had to replace that too. But still a bit easier than pulling the intake manifold. Upon testing my repair, all three problems remained. So I gave up (getting too old for this stuff) and took it to the shop. It turns out that you need to clear the code (P0128) in order to get everything to work again. I can see the check engine light staying on but to design a system where that light controls the rest of the systems in question is ridiculous. Even the temp gauge wouldn’t read until the code was cleared. Way to go GM! So the moral of the story is, don’t expect a repair to work until you clear the code. PS… only cost me an additional $116.
yeah .. most codes have to be cleared to computer knows to recheck
We have this issue and have reset the battery several times but the code always comes back up even after replacing temp sensor. Taking it to a dealership in a few days and hopefully can get them to reset whatever needed.
Thanks for making this video. I followed it and it was perfect. You probably saved us $600 as opposed to taking our 2019 Blazer to the dealer. $194 before tax for parts I remember a themostat costing $2 bucks in the 80's with the gasket. Someone else said we are going backwards and I agree.
Great to hear!
@@FalconsGarage I didn't replace the sensor because I only got the PO128 code, I think the sensor is a PO118 code and for those who don't have the ability to cancel codes, they can disconnect the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds and get immediate results. Thanks again for making this video. Two weeks from doing this job and no problems. Filled the overflow with prestone GM coolant and still good.
Good job on explaining everything on how to do it , it will save me like 800 bucks on bringing it to mechanic to do it and supposedly it was going to take like 4 hrs to do and watching this video seems easier and it shouldn't take that long to replace thermostat and the sensor
good luck
Pregunta falcons garage el gasket del intake es solo una pieza o dos piezas y gracias por tu vídeo muy bien explicado
I just paid off my 2019 Acadia and so it started doing this immediately... of Course! Watching this made me realize I will be spending a lot of money at the dealer to fix this....
sadly its a common issue with this engines
@@FalconsGarage GM has a lot of known issues that they refuse to recall and fix. My 2020 Silverado is pouring water from the top of the back glass due to a faulty manufacturing of the built in seal and it's going to cost me more than $1000 for that, this will likely run me closer to $2000.
@@bnelson1229 Our 2018 just went into the shop for this code today - air turned off, drive with care, etc.. They said reflashing the ECM, replacing the battery and replacing the sensor will fix this. They also want to replace the shifter handle? Nearly $850 is the quote out the door.
@Florida Stacker mine wasn't any of that. My issue was a bad thermostat that had hung open. They replaced the thermostat and the sensor. That fixed the issue and the cost was about $550.
Because there are so many vehicles impacted by this poorly designed part that a recall needs to occur. Notify NHTSA if you're experiencing this known problem!
Excellent Video, Most just like to go on and on about other BullS@&t rather than staying on point ,keep up the good work Man!...👊😎
Great video. I did this repair a couple years ago and it’s already bk to the same code
Probably same issue. Very commun
good information are you in Raleigh North Carolina this is the problem I'm having with my 2017 Acadia when that cold comes up I get no air but I get heat
Awesome video brother! What should I expect my local mechanic (not dealership) to charge for this repair?
Subbed
Awesome having the same issue on a 2019
Thanks for the video. After putting everything back together, there seems to be a sputter. Where does the vaccuum line at the back of the air box connect to? Looks to be somewhere down by where the thermostat pipe bends back to the radiator hose. Mine got disconnected and I don't see what it would connect to? thanks!
Hi, I got the same message on my GMC terrain 2018 at every time Auto stop in addition the new message (Park break released). Is it the same solution you did on your video.
Do you have info on the O-rings for the fuel return lines? Recommendations? Specs?
Is it necessary to change the housing / pipe also? Would it fix it too if I just did the temp sensor?
Mine had the steering assist message for quite awhile and my husband noticed the temp wasn’t right so he replaced the temp sensor and thermostat but now I’m getting U1510, u0253, u0401 and cylinder 2 misfire. It shakes and has a long second shift. It is also showing messages like service parking brake , and all wheel drive off. Any suggestions?
Where did you get the thermostat and housing from?
Just curious, I had this done at the dealership under the extended warranty. So I got it back a couple days ago and it’s staying on the notch just below the halfway mark on the temp gauge and my obd reader says it’s at 194 degrees. (I haven’t gotten another code yet) Is this the correct temp you got? Just asking before I take it back to the dealership.
Can u help me to find to open for the To release the thermostat
Thank you so much for this video. Just did mine. Only issue is now that I’ve buttoned everything back up I have a vacuum leak and can’t figure out where. All hoses are connected so I’m at a loss
try usins a smoke leak detector
Always replace the intake gaskets on the plenum when reinstalled
Thanx
👍
Excellent video, I am preparing to perform this repair on my wife's 2017 Acadia. Did you drain the coolant from the radiator before starting?
No. I pinched the 2 radiator hoses and the one from the reservoir so I wouldn’t loose allot of coolant. That help allot.
Good luck with the job!
Perfect! Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. Boring part? More like informative part. I have the same error code and steering assist message and always wondered why the two would be related, now I know. Couple of questions. How do I find the right part number for my GMC? The amazon link said it wouldn't work for my 2018 GMC Acadia. Odd though because gmpartsdirect says it does fit my vehicle. Do you have to replace the old O ring, or did you do that just because you had it already? Also, my AC seems to stop blowing cold AC when I get this warning, could the two be related? I know if the car can't determine the engine temperature or is overheating it will turn off things like the AC. So I'm hoping fixing the thermostat and sensor fix the AC as well.
Also, I think I'm going to use tape over the intake holes. AutoZone diagnostics reader didn't say what the solution to the error code is. And a mechanic shop near me wanted $160 to do a more in depth diagnostics check
the part number i show is for my 2019 but you can always call the dealer and ask the parts department and they will give you the part numbers, yes I replaced the O ring because I had it and yes when warning comes on the car will make the fan run all the time and not let the AC compressor turn on to prevent the engine from overheating because it cannot tell the proper temperature
Any chance you have the part numbers for those little “O” rings on the fuel lines? Parts for this job are hard to come by. You did an awesome job with this tutorial. Thank you for posting this!
sorry no .. when i called the dealer and explain to them whati need it they got them for me .. but i forgot to ask for the part number
gm part # 12648547. You won't find it at most automotive stores. I found one at local GMC dealer for $4.
Do these o-rings REALLY need to be replaced? It’s not like you were going to replace them if this hadn’t happened in the first place.
@@jenniferlawless4703 so these pipes are actually coolant air bleed pipes and not fuel related? all of these videos are calling them fuel return lines, etc
Do you have to bleed the coolnt system is these or are they self bleeding? like fill and go?
yes .. you need to "burp" the system .. but its not too hard on this engines
Thank you, I have an appointment this week … good to know what the issue is.
Best of luck!
Would the powertrain warranty cover the thermostat?
@@nakipilivi7503it should.
Love the video, do you have the part number for the fuel return line gaskets. Just so I can order them ahead of time if I need them. Thank you
I dont, but Im sure if you call the dealer they will order it for you or give you the part number
did you ever find this part number?
Good morning! So I just replaced the sensor on mine 2018 gmc Acadia 6cyl … same code , gauge dropped and steering assist and fan on .. replaced the sensor drove perfect! But after 50 miles it happened again… I disconnected the battery and gauge started reading perfect again… any ideas why it did that?? So far hasn’t gone on again.. any tips what I should do if comes on again?
did you replace the thermostat?
This happened on my 2020 Chevy Blazer and I was quoted from the Chevy dealership $1700. That seems way too high, what should it normally cost? They quoted $250 for the inspection just to find the problem. $250 for the part, and $1200 for labor.
I’m not savy enough to do it myself but don’t want to be overcharged if I don’t have too…
What was the item number for the fuel line return O rings? Did you end up having to buy new ones?
gm part # 12648547. You won't find it at most automotive stores. I found one at local GMC dealer for $4.
Hello, I have a 2017 Acadia and have the same problem but does it affect the A/C too?
yes
Great video my 2019 is doing the same thing now but then it cuts off and starts back working. Does that mean it's going out correct 🤔? No check engine light but does read that code.
No. It will never “auto correct”. Mine did the same thing. It’s an issue that has to be solved & fixed.
Mine does this. I just disconnect the battery and it's fine for a week or so then it happens again I just keep disconnecting the battery. I think mines just the sensor and not the thermostat. But if I'm tearing it apart might as well change it
Thanks for the video could you do one on P0011 OBD-II Trouble Code: Camshaft Position A - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
how is your oil? quality and is it up to level?
My 2019 Acadia doing the same thing. We replaced the thermostat and the sensor and still getting the steering assist is reduced and the temperature gauge is at 0. Now what could be the problem?
This issue usually comes with some codes, what codes are you getting?
Also this cars have issues with the hardness that goes from that temp sensor to the main hardness. It’s only about 10inches long or less.
So no need to drain coolant? Only minimal of coolant will leak?
no need to drain completely
Do you have to drain any coolant to do this or will a little bit just drain when you disconnect the main pipe?
no need to totally drain it .. but you will loose some coolant in the process
@@FalconsGarage thank you. I got all this work done, sensor included. But my guage still reads the line below mid. Havent got on the freeway to see if it throws the code yet. I hooked up my obd2 scanner, temp was at 175 when it hit that line, and didnt move as it went to 200. Im baffled. 🤷
@@gedmin383 my wife’s (the one on the video) also never gets to the middle. But the code also never came back
@@FalconsGarage good! Hoping it's the same for me. Thanks again!
Hi thanks for the video, i changed the thermostat and the sensor, put everything back together, this didn't fix the problem, i still get the steering assistance message, no AC and the fan running loud, i don't know what to do next, any idea?
I’m having this problem too. Did you figure out what was going on with it?
Same here wtf GMC!
Don't forget to erase the error message that was my mistake.
I just started having this problem in my 18’ Acadia Denali. “Steering Assist is reduced “ and loud fans. It’s kinda cold right now so I don’t know if the AC is not working, been using the heat mostly. But I don’t know if it’s worth spending the time and money on replacing mine and it’s not work either. Wtf to do?!! Spend dumb money on a dealer visit!? Dammit
Did you figure out what the problem was? My wife's is doing this, minus the CEL. I don't want to go through all this just to change the sensor out. It's ridiculous to have to take all that off to get to a thermostat.
Is it still drive able
Bought my Acadia this Saturday with 54,000 miles. Driving it home from work this morning I had a the same issue. I am NOT happy about it. I feel like the dealership may have known and didn’t tell me, and of course it didn’t come up during the test drive or on the hour drive home.
very common issue
How did you get the sensor out I’m having a hard time taking it out
i used a very small wrench .. it wasn't easy to be honest .. just needs allot of patiance
I used a flex flare nut wrench to get it out.
I found a video of a guy that did the sensor without removing everything. 15mm 1/4 inch socket with a wobbly and some extensions. Took me about 15 minutes to swap out the sensor. Figured I’d try that first before pulling it all to do the thermostat. Unfortunately I’ll be doing the thermostat. Must not be closing all the way because it’s never getting to full operating temp.
Can you please share the video?
GM needs a recall on this. Complete bullshit! Probably will disconnect battery and trade the pos off on a Toyota or Mazda.
How long did it take to complete the job ?
about 2 hours
Whats the part number for the intake gasket?
i believe this is it ...

@@FalconsGarage thank you so much!
Help. My upper radiator hose doesn’t go all the way back into the thermostat
could you explain that?
Will this cause your ac not to work as well?
it could .. but not likely
2019 Acadia fan blows like it’s turbo
, steering assist warning and A/C blows hot 😮
My computer is apparently not recording these occurences so the dealership won’t help me!! Any idea why the computer is not recording the code when this happens??
So when you take your car to the dealership it doesn’t have a check engine light?
We had the same issue with our 2018 Acadia. Drive with care came on, a/c turned off while driving and loud fans. By time the dealership could take it in several days later it was "back to normal" and they turned us away saying "no code". A month later same thing happened. Crazy hot air, "drive with care" and loud fans. We dropped it off today with no service engine light on but just got a call that the battery needs replaced, ECM reflashed with new software and our shifter handle replaced? I don't know what the shifter handle has to do with it, could be separate but just passing on as you never know...vehicle has 30K miles.
Tried this and it is now saying engine power reduce and it’s shaking. Any thoughts or ideas?
sounds like something was left disconnected or not connected all the way .. and codes?
@@FalconsGarage P16A1
Did this effect your vehicles A/C too?
not on mine but ive seen it happen to allot with the same issue .. because of the issue the truck cannot see the temp of the car so it disables the AC
@@FalconsGarage thank you and I appreciate the quick response!
How long did it take you?
about 2 hours or so
How far can I drive my car with this issue for repair?
really impossible to tell .. could be months .. or days .. depends on the symptoms
Why would GM design some BS like this, so that you would have to do all that just to change a thermostat? We have gone backward, not forward. Also electric power steering , no thanks. Could go out at anytime with a thousand causes. Fluid was better, You could drive a car for twenty years with zero problems. Don't get me talking about cheap Chinese parts
you forgot to click back the bracket of the intake manifold. min 16:07
