I reckon his enclosure being high up is a factor in him being a little more calm than you'd expect. He feels more secure and confident being above you, Kevin McCurley from NERD always says how it's extremely helpful when socialising baby monitors to lift them high up so they can see their surroundings and you don't appear as large and threatening to them because their natural instinct when threatened is to climb as high as possible - if they're already there they feel safer.

W.r.t. ackies, I'm pretty sure there's a generic component. About half the babies I produce are more outgoing and interactive than the cumingi in this video. The other half don't want any interaction like what you described. Also, if you want really good socialization as a baby, starting with forced handling under a basking light right out of the incubator is helpful.

I used to teach clicker training classes for dogs! This is exciting. Do you think tegus can be clicker trained?

Well maybe just teach the lizard its name, seems to work just fine for me. My lizards do a lot of tricks with just voice commands, and they can learn their names very fast. The youngest one i taught was a 4 month old, of course it was the Cayman Brac the smartest reptile species ever recorded on the internet.
