The Earless Monitor: An Oddly Charismatic Lizard
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 сер 2019
- The Earless Monitor (Lathanotus borneensis) is an unusual relative of the True Monitors that lives on the island of Borneo. It is a very unique animal, having split off from Varanids during the Late Cretaceous. The only close relative known from the fossil record hails from Mongolia c.70 mya.
They are fairly uncommon in the wild and this leaves a lot of their behaviour rather mysterious.

the smaller, primitive version of a dragon
They really are dragon-like lizards!
The ridges on the back look like a crocodile's.
I saw one on Instagram
They have an incredibly resemblance to the mystical Chinese dragons..
I need 1!
They're like baby Kaiju! They look like a subspecies of Godzillasaurus! Cool!
They really do don't they!
I live in Borneo all my life but I only found out about this beautiful creature today !
They sure are underappreciated!
You do the survey
im live in borneo also and my place near the forest, they are really rare
I am very certain more attention would be given to this animal if they didn't get named after the least interesting trait about them.
Ah, I'd love to draw one of these as a Dragon or something haha! Colours are nice and interesting scales. All you'd really have to do is add wings, and you'd have a dragon.
It's incredible how much they look like the mystical Chinese dragons one have known about for so many years...
Give it a few more million years and it's gonna become the new mosasaurus
I really hope we can get a breeding population established in captivity. I would love to keep one of these guys as a pet.
They are so unique and ancient that they must be protected!
palm oil has almost destroyed all of them, and there are very few in captivity, breeding them is not easy and keeping them required a good experience of delicate species. Also you won't see them much, a terrarium for them is mostly mud, gravel. They don't show often, they are very secretive. They are a very bad "pet".
@@nicolasannawn5715 For most people, sure, they would be a bad pet. But there are plenty of people who don't mind keeping secretive animals. Sand boas are extremely popular and they spend their lives mostly under the sand. And there are many people with the level of experience required to keep delicate animals. I wouldn't ever tell someone to get one as a first pet, but if they can keep a green tree python or tegu successfully, why not one of these guys?
Dr.Bright Why are people so adamant on having exotic pets? They’re not domesticated, they carry diseases, they’re taken from the wild, they need special care and maintenance, and usually you need to replicate their natural environment or they get stressed, a place they shouldn’t have been taken out of in the first place. Just get a dog or cat and leave them alone.
@@HoundofOdin green tree and tegu are not hard to keep. These guys are very delicate, and very hard to breed. Their place belongs only in the hands of people who can actually breed them.
All it needs is a pair of wings
People want everything as pets, smfh, leave them in the wild
but sometimes those people can offer a better, longer life for said animal. such as cats "cough cough"
@@zekepruett7783 cats have been domesticated for thousands of years 🙃. Animals that are already domesticated are fine to have, but people keep wanting the have wild animals as pets, or they wanna try to domesticate other animals that aren’t yet, and all I’m saying is to *cough cough* LEAVE THEM ALONE. We don’t need to domesticate any other animals because they only suffer in the hands of humans. Some are taken care of,yea, but most don’t have the proper housing, diets, stimulation, exercise, etc. And then there’s people who just outright abuse or neglect animals, abandon them, breed them for profit, etc.
Animals THAT ARE STILL WILD are better off in the wild.
@@SAMMIsLIFE that’s vegan bullshit.
@@stefanostokatlidis4861 and ur an idiot
@@SAMMIsLIFE do something about the invasive species you are promoting before criticising me.
is that deviljho?
I didn't think monitors could drop tails. Is this pretty much the only monitor that can drop it's tail? Or did he mean if he loses it from an actual injury?
Who on earth is feeding them endangered sea turtle eggs?
More like dragon without wings.
Is the volume very low for anyone else?
It is good for earless monitor hearing ranges.
It’s a dragon give it wings and firebthen you have a dragon
Reminds me of a snake with legs, even more so than the varanids. Dr. Polaris, would you be interested in making a video on the evolution of snakes from their non-snake squamate ancestors?
varanids used to look more like snakes, they originated from mosasaurus. And about snakes, the matter is still undecided. There are 2 possibilities, the shape could either be for an aquatic lifestyle, or could be for burrowing, actually since the bones are small and very often fragile, it is very difficult to actually find fossils. The first saurian would be Megachirella wachtleri, which is 240 m old, snakes with vestigial limbs from the Najash genus are about 90m old
I love this channel
This is my favorite reptile.
usually u can see these animal at indonesia...because i've seen these before at my backyard but currently these animal really hard to find now...greetings from indonesiaaa
I saw a picture of one on Pinterest and the caption is dragon. So I look it up, and here I am
What a goofy little guy.
I love the Pokémon music in the back😂😂😂
do they make good pets? or i should leave them alone?
Volume is TOO LOW, couldn't hear a word, so I missed this interesting video
Why's the volume so low 😞
why and how tf is Godzilla small irl
Maybe He just never got radiation
Ikhwan Mauaja I see
Its looks just like the postosuchus I swear
It looks like a real baby dinosaur or a dragon
that's a tiny dragon.
They should have named it the Dragon monitor not the boring name it has now
now they got sold illegally
Give it wings
Lol
There head looks like a snake.
They sure are funny looking! Snakes are quite close relatives of this lizard though.
Snakes and Monitor Lizards are closest living relatives, and it's generally accepted that Varanids share a common ancestor with Snakes
This is almost a care guide it provides so much information on how to keep them in captivity.
Aww they got blue eyes.
I get how fair use works, but your dialogue is identical to the Wikipedia article about this beasty. Some kind of attribution is in order when you directly lift text in large slabs. Note that I'm a huge fan of this channel (but not the speculative rubbish), not a hater at all.
New import from beyond
Dracarys! 😅
You might want to do a little work on your audio; music to high, narration too low. Good job overall!
Thanks for the feedback.
WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU??
I went from never wanting a lizard to needing this lizard, is there any way to get one as a pet?
Sadly they are endangered and extremely rare 😭😭
Don’t even think of buying one they’re being illegally trafficked and they’re population is going down by smugglers taking them out of the wild to sell them to people who want them as pets
Get a bearded dragon instead.
get a leopard gecko instead
That is a dragon. That is a fucking dragon.
Thanks, we understood your first sentence. What was the point of repeating it? Honest question 🙄
@@somnuswaltz5586 youre on UA-cam critiquing year old comments under a video of a lizard. I will engage no further
@@KING-tv8ci you're dumb bro 🤣
Speak louder
HOW RUDE YOU GUYS ENGLISH NAME THEM EARLESS LIZARD? And why did we agree to keep using the name that way? Only lazy people give a name to something based on what it doesnt have!
Is that a mini dragon?!?!!!
