  • The Earless Monitor (Lathanotus borneensis) is an unusual relative of the True Monitors that lives on the island of Borneo. It is a very unique animal, having split off from Varanids during the Late Cretaceous. The only close relative known from the fossil record hails from Mongolia c.70 mya.
    They are fairly uncommon in the wild and this leaves a lot of their behaviour rather mysterious.

      palm oil has almost destroyed all of them, and there are very few in captivity, breeding them is not easy and keeping them required a good experience of delicate species. Also you won't see them much, a terrarium for them is mostly mud, gravel. They don't show often, they are very secretive. They are a very bad "pet".

    • @HoundofOdin
      @HoundofOdin 3 роки тому +7

      @@nicolasannawn5715 For most people, sure, they would be a bad pet. But there are plenty of people who don't mind keeping secretive animals. Sand boas are extremely popular and they spend their lives mostly under the sand. And there are many people with the level of experience required to keep delicate animals. I wouldn't ever tell someone to get one as a first pet, but if they can keep a green tree python or tegu successfully, why not one of these guys?

    • @dryocampa
      @dryocampa 3 роки тому +3

      Dr.Bright Why are people so adamant on having exotic pets? They’re not domesticated, they carry diseases, they’re taken from the wild, they need special care and maintenance, and usually you need to replicate their natural environment or they get stressed, a place they shouldn’t have been taken out of in the first place. Just get a dog or cat and leave them alone.

    • @nicolasannawn5715
      @nicolasannawn5715 3 роки тому

      @@HoundofOdin green tree and tegu are not hard to keep. These guys are very delicate, and very hard to breed. Their place belongs only in the hands of people who can actually breed them.

    • @SAMMIsLIFE

      @@zekepruett7783 cats have been domesticated for thousands of years 🙃. Animals that are already domesticated are fine to have, but people keep wanting the have wild animals as pets, or they wanna try to domesticate other animals that aren’t yet, and all I’m saying is to *cough cough* LEAVE THEM ALONE. We don’t need to domesticate any other animals because they only suffer in the hands of humans. Some are taken care of,yea, but most don’t have the proper housing, diets, stimulation, exercise, etc. And then there’s people who just outright abuse or neglect animals, abandon them, breed them for profit, etc.
      Animals THAT ARE STILL WILD are better off in the wild.

    Reminds me of a snake with legs, even more so than the varanids. Dr. Polaris, would you be interested in making a video on the evolution of snakes from their non-snake squamate ancestors?

    • @nicolasannawn5715
      @nicolasannawn5715 3 роки тому +1

      varanids used to look more like snakes, they originated from mosasaurus. And about snakes, the matter is still undecided. There are 2 possibilities, the shape could either be for an aquatic lifestyle, or could be for burrowing, actually since the bones are small and very often fragile, it is very difficult to actually find fossils. The first saurian would be Megachirella wachtleri, which is 240 m old, snakes with vestigial limbs from the Najash genus are about 90m old
