i worked with a kind of tame one and it was the best animal ever. He was super active and kind of greedy for food. If he thought he´d get some he might snap at your hand but as soon as he realized it wont he was chilled. You could get him out of his room and run around and he´d follow you expecting something. Collegues trained immobilization for their trainee with him and he played along well. At some point he was sick of it and only thing he did was some hissing. Now hes got a bigger place in southern Spain. Miss this buddy.

You nailed it with your observation of their eyes. I raised an ornate Nile monitor from 21” to 72”, about 45 lbs, and 15 years old. Visitors claimed that he staring them down, and I would tell them, “no, he’s looking through your eyes into your soul to decide if you are acceptable in his domain or not. You’ll know quickly if you are not accepted. I’ve watched him run two of the burliest, biggest, toughest guys I know right out of the garage one time because he wanted the fried chicken they were eating. I was eating the same thing but he didn’t mess with me. Hmmmm. I yelled at them to drop their chicken but they wouldn’t so he just chased them around until they did. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever watched!!! He was the ULTIMATE watch dog. People would step into the garage and hear that ominous hiss/deep breath of a monstrous dragon and they did t even have too see him to sense that foreboding. Most people thought he was an alligator. I once had the fire department visit with animal control not far behind because someone claimed there was an alligator in my yard. Ten minutes later the whole fire dept was posing with me and the dragon taking pictures and laughing and smiling and of course next were the neighborhood kids, and everyone had a great time. Then animal control dude rolls up, gets out of his truck, walks towards us and sees the dragon in my arms, noted that everything seemed to be under control, and got right back in his truck. The "oh crap" was the moment I realised the Argus was some serious and deadly business. Thanks for the awesome video as always Clint, but I need to ask: why no Emerald or Black Tree Monitors on the list?
My favourite reptiles are monitors. Living in Australia is a bonus. I've seen over half of our species in the wild as well as komodo dragons, Asian water monitors, mangrove monitors and more overseas. I have worked as a reptile relocator and been called out to many monitor captures. Fun critters! Love your channel.
Thanks for uploading!! i love your channel, ive been thinking about getting a reptile of sorts soon and watching these is helping me a lot lol. Hope you're having a good day :D

I haven't even STARTED the video yet but I already wanna say I'M SO EXCITED!!! I've been waiting for this video for ages, I love Varanids so much and I'm so happy they get their own video! Carry on.
Clint is frigging hysterical. When that Argus monitor hissed at him and he said “oh shit” I literally bust out loud laughing. I love that you infuse relatable info with your sensible opinions. I’ve had reptiles for over 20 years. I’m one of the crazy people that like giants. I have a retic, Burmese and used to have an Asian water monitor. Even my dog is a Great Dane! Lol that being said giants are not for beginners and I think you do a great job giving someone who is tempted to have a wow sized lizard a reality check.
Just wanna say I appreciate your content, been watching for a long time and always love the info. Recently thinking of getting a monitor so I've been rewatching all your monitor vids, I'm a long time reptile owner from snakes, turtles, chameleons, geckos, beardies, uromastyx, I have plenty of experience with lots of variety Even still it truly seems a monitor could be a big challenge so lucky ima hold off for now but one day!
31:34 Instructions unclear, got myself four Komodo Dragons. On a serious note though, monitor lizards are so cool! They're up there with sailfin lizards and australian water dragons in terms of "coolest lizard" as far as I'm concerned.
I don't know if it's just the lighting, but the Timor Monitor scales looked like beads. I couldn't get over how shiny and beautiful they were. Super cool.
Love love love these videos. Had a Nile many moons ago and the cage I build took up a quarter of my family room and he still tried to escape every day. I thought I did a good job of being an owner but I guess my Nile always felt like a prisoner.
I have a mixed ackie. His mom was a red and his dad a yellow. He’s a cutie. I Love him. If you want a monitor they do make a great pet, he has bitten me 5 times but it doesn’t hurt, not like a bigger monitor. Blue tongue skinks and bearded dragon bites hurt more in my opinion.
@@Barabel22 South Asia, all reptiles are considered exotic animal where you need either a zoom permit or exotic pets permit which is going to be really really expensive
Trying to figure out why 105 people gave this a thumbs down. It's legitimate information from a SCIENTIST who studies biology. He tells you the positive and negative about all the species. Are some people so salty they have nothing better to do than thumbs down a video that should realistically have only thumbs up? I've raised Nile monitors for years and still really enjoyed this video. By the way, Clint is absolutely right about Nile monitors. They make terrible pets. I'm from India and I still remember when I was a kid (almost 15 years ago) I went to my grandpa's house and saw like 6-7 monitors crossing because in villages people make bathroom and toilet approximately 200 metres away from house and I went to toilet that time and locked up myself when I saw them. 😂😂😂The biggest one was like 5 foot. I normally see one or two but that day omg so many monitors. 😲😲😲 I love how informative and educational this channel is.♥️ Thank you so much.
OMG that made MY heart race there at the end! I will never get a big lizard just for that intimidation factor, BUT I do love the look of Ackies and it’s on my wish list!

Hey clint, you were a great influence in the decision for me to get a false water cobra from kyle, and he’s doing phenomenal. thanks for your coverage on FWCs in another video, and great video today.
I know I'm late, but I do have some experience to share(I've owned both). It all depends on what kind of keeper you are. If you are a hands-on keeper and want something to interact with, the tegu is the better choice. If you're more like me, in that you prefer to sit and observe animals in a naturalistic enclosure, and handling isn't as important to you, I think you'll find the monitor more rewarding. The biggest thing to keep in mind with Dumeril's monitors is the diet is more specialized and tends to take a bit more work(at least around my area). But I would seriously ask yourself which kind of keeper you are, and if you want more of a pet, or more of a display piece.
@@bradsimpson8724 I know a few people with Dumeril's and they're laid back and fairly social. But they all bought theirs as hatchlings and they're well socialized.
@@curtism-w6b Absolutely, they can be super tame(mine was, and she was a long-term captive, but originally wild). However, their activity level is higher, and they seem more interested in getting away from you and doing their own thing. Tegus often develop an almost affectionate, cat-like personality, where they actually seem to want to hang out with you. Same with the display thing: tegus aren't boring by any stretch, but they aren't much for climbing or swimming, and seem to spend more lounging than the more active monitors.
First time watching this channel, great job, love how informative this is! Also thanks for mentioning space and lighting, cause people often forget this and I've seen people on UA-cam recommend like tiny enclosures. Gonna keep watching!
He is totally boxed in... I am comfortable working with most animals... but in that situation... yeah.... Hey Clint, it is okay if you make the set not as nice for filming in the name of safety in my book and I think most people would agree with that!

The "oh crap" was the moment I realised the Argus was some serious and deadly business. Thanks for the awesome video as always Clint, but I need to ask: why no Emerald or Black Tree Monitors on the list?
They cost a lot and are almost always wild caught. They aren’t hardy at all. They don’t like handling and for their size need a big enclosure
Goodday Mate!!!🤣🤣🤣
Your reaction to the argos is fantastic
Thanks for uploading!! i love your channel, ive been thinking about getting a reptile of sorts soon and watching these is helping me a lot lol. Hope you're having a good day :D
"You're alright" *Hiss* "Oh, crap."
LMFAO - I already was on your side about the ackie you had me ROLLING with that clip. Thank you for another great video!!
Really glad you did this videos. I love monitors
I've been dreaming of this day for a long time!
33:18 That cute "i almost died" laugh made my day
20:39 😂😂😂 THE TENSION! I actually jumped too!
I haven't even STARTED the video yet but I already wanna say I'M SO EXCITED!!! I've been waiting for this video for ages, I love Varanids so much and I'm so happy they get their own video! Carry on.
I laughed soooooo hard lmao thank you for the bloopers lmao
Clint is frigging hysterical. When that Argus monitor hissed at him and he said “oh shit” I literally bust out loud laughing. I love that you infuse relatable info with your sensible opinions. I’ve had reptiles for over 20 years. I’m one of the crazy people that like giants. I have a retic, Burmese and used to have an Asian water monitor. Even my dog is a Great Dane! Lol that being said giants are not for beginners and I think you do a great job giving someone who is tempted to have a wow sized lizard a reality check.
Clint, which do you like more, Ackies or Jeweled Lacertas? 😬
Ackies, but that isn't fair. Ackies beat almost everything for me.
@@ClintsReptiles what about gus? :)
Asian water monitor has always been my dream pet and you confirmed that they have an amazing personality
*HISS!*
Aw crap..
Cut to clint missing a tooth messy hair all scratched up and a black eye XD
The black eye would would imply that the lizard punched him in the face
The moment at 20:30 though.. I love how you instinctively become super aware of the situation.
Argos monitor hisses. Clint "Oh Crap...."
Btw the way that dude was handled was awesome and intense!
I LOVE your channel. Informative and your love of reptiles just shines through like the sun. Just awesome!
Me: *sees monitor in title*
Also me: *immediately clicks*
Also please make a vid about dumerils monitors
I don't know if it's just the lighting, but the Timor Monitor scales looked like beads. I couldn't get over how shiny and beautiful they were. Super cool.
Great video clint! Can you do a video on chuckwallas?
If I can get my hands on one.
I love the candid moments after the filming.
Watching again. Monitors are cool.
Pros: it’s huge
Cons: it’s huge
😂😂
By the way, thank you for all the amazing and very informative videos!
Thank you! I am obsessed with monitors, and I’m researching the heck out of them. This was soooo informative!
20:33 You know it's getting serious when Clint stops talking and even swears, i gotta say that the argus monitor's hiss was definitely not friendly.
Glad the Dumeril's is on your list. I have wanted one forever.
When you live in a place where keeping monitors is illegal but you still watch the video just to get angry at the fact you'll probably never own one
Revolutions have been fought over less...
My country doesn't let locals own reptiles, but with a permit locals can ship wild caught reptiles for the pet trade. Sucks
@@blackgrizly9522 Where do you love that you can’t own reptiles, and why? Just seems pretty pointless...
I consider mine to be calm and I still absolutely would not trust Fred and Wilma around anyone but me. They go to straight kill mode when anyone else comes around. Thank you for all of your videos Clint!
Maybe you should add "two gloves plus ice hockey goalie neck guard" for the extra wily ones
I’m loving my little varanus gilleni. My first time feeding it as a tiny baby, it took tiny red runners from my fingers and continues to hand feed happily :D
Any chance on a video of the Brazilian Rainbow Boa? I've been doing my research and would love to hear your opinion on them.
Clint is the best! Love that guy!
Where are the Green/Yellow/Blue Tree Monitors Clint???!
I will cover them, but they weren't even close to making this list.
Clint's Reptiles Oh nice! I know they really aren’t reasonable pets, but aesthetically green tree monitors are probably my favorite lizard.
His list is trash Argus monitor made the list 😂😂😂 dudes a joke
@@ClintsReptiles Why not Green Tree Monitor? Definitely more user friendly than half of your list ;/
@@xellossdio2720 not really when you take into factor that they're pretty hard to maintain in captivity, especially due to them being incredibly sensitive to certain aspects of care lol
I love your enthusiasm. Absolutely love it. Keep up the great vids!
The person who disliked must really hate rad dinosaurs(kinda).
It was a Nile monitor...
@@ClintsReptiles or a Savannah...
I love how informative and educational this channel is.♥️
Thank you so much.
that argus monitor turned into sonic
OMG that made MY heart race there at the end! I will never get a big lizard just for that intimidation factor, BUT I do love the look of Ackies and it’s on my wish list!
Definitely don't trap yourself with one at chest height...
When that thing reared up on you😂😱
Wow & whoa that was terrifying! Those bloopers were amazing!
20:40 had me DEAD lmfao
Haha I love that the one keeps trying to walk away and Clint keeps dragging it back. Like dang it I’m tryina explore.
They say when you see something you like your pupil widens
Pupil size increased
Monitors definitely give me the dilations...
Lol I absolutely love this video, you with all these big babies. I don't even need a big lizard, but I've always been fascinated with reptiles. I gotta get to RAD sometime. Thank you for this!!
Clint i love your videos they’re stinkin rad . I would like to know where you got gusgus
Thank you so much! I took Gus Gus in as a rehoming when he was small.
Hey clint, you were a great influence in the decision for me to get a false water cobra from kyle, and he’s doing phenomenal. thanks for your coverage on FWCs in another video, and great video today.
He's great! I'm so glad we could help.
Clint's Reptiles Kyle’s a great help with information as well!
We need a Dumeril's Monitor vs Argentine Tegu video ASAP. I love both and can't pick a favorite lol.
Hey Clint honest question: Why haven't you bought an office chair with wheels when you're sometimes nervous to be bitten? :p
Even with wheels I couldn't get out.
@@ClintsReptiles Is it the wall behind you?
He is totally boxed in... I am comfortable working with most animals... but in that situation... yeah.... Hey Clint, it is okay if you make the set not as nice for filming in the name of safety in my book and I think most people would agree with that!
Love love love this!!!! Monitors are my all time favorite reptile, thank you for putting this top 6 list up!! The ah crap moment with the argus though
I have undiagnosed ASD (lots and lots of research on it, like, months of research) and my special interest is pretty much any animals, especially reptiles and amphibians, this channel is like the holy grail for me, I discovered it a couple days ago (this video is 3 years old lol) and I've been watching so much of it, the bat video just came out yesterday and I watched it, I absolutely loved it, I didn't even know birds were reptiles
Plus I love you reaction was handling these monitors I know through personal experiences they can be quite aggressive but you make me laugh a few times thanks again for your video
