There was an Argus monitor on a construction site I worked on. There was a trench for gas pipes that was open awaiting the pipe, each day this massive Argus would drop into the trench and do his shopping, eating every other animal in there from giant burrowing cockroaches to skinks, elapid snakes and white's tree frogs. The tracks in the sand at the bottom of the trench showed every pursuit and capture. I eventually managed to catch that monitor one day, hauled him out of the trench and was attacked several times when I released him in the bush. By far the craziest monitor I have handled.

I’m loving my little varanus gilleni. My first time feeding it as a tiny baby, it took tiny red runners from my fingers and continues to hand feed happily :D
Once when I was three, my brothers friend brought a baby monitor (I think a water monitor, not sure) and kept it in our basement in a glass aquarium. It was my dads first reptile. Shortly after my dad built a huge enclosure in the basement, then shortly after that he had to rehome it because he was scared that it would eat me!! 14 years later I got a leopard gecko and my dad loves geckos now :)
Love love love these videos. Had a Nile many moons ago and the cage I build took up a quarter of my family room and he still tried to escape every day. I thought I did a good job of being an owner but I guess my Nile always felt like a prisoner.

Great video! Glad to see entire groups of lizards put head to head with pros and cons like this. I have had the honor of working with a Komodo Dragon in the past as a Zoo volunteer. Very cool animal, totally should not be kept as a pet :) It just isn't possible to give them a proper life and handle them safely without being able to have an enclosure as big as a house... a large house really to do it right, and a whole lot of precautions. The one I worked with was very well trained so we could tell him to go into a box for cleaning and putting out food so that no accidents could happen. The box also made it so the vet could safely check on him without the dangerous mouth being a risk. He wasn't mean, but with a mouth full of of steak knives and deadly bacteria, you have to be careful. I love the little monitors too, but I got to say, Komodos (and some of the huge other monitors) have something extra special going on mentally and Tegus actually remind me more of Komodos than any of the small monitors do in that regard, perhaps because both are terrestrial scavengers? Or perhaps because I haven't handled that many small monitors yet. BTW, when I saw that body posture, I thought what you said, lol. Kudos to you friend for knocking it out of that mode.
