There was only one reason Delap played in the premier league and it was because he could throw like that and he always delivered. Don't remember him doing a shit throw.
He wasn't even that bad at the other aspects of the game.
Scored an absolute peach of a bicycle kick for Southampton in his early days, wasn't half as unskilled as he's made out to be.
He was a great athlete. He was an excellent javelin thrower in his youth.

I love some of the reactions when this myth of excellence built up. There was that goalkeeper who panicked on a back pass and kicked out for a corner to avoid a throw. Then there were the groundsmen making pitches longer or placing advertising to stop run ups for throw ins. Or subs warming up in front of him and walking across his path. It was fun and amazed no other team has invested in the tactic
Even as an Arsenal fan I found it so funny to see the panic on our players faces. Think an Arsenal player put it out for a corner instead of a throwin as well once.
Grinding out a 1-0 at Stoke on a wet and windy day was a bigger accomplishment than beating Barcelona.
The secret is the imense backwards rotation he applies on the ball. Thats why you see him often using a towel to dry the ball and get a better grip, so that he can maintain longer contact when throwing in order to apply more rotation.
After throwing, the rotation acts the same way as a bend, only instead of bending sideways it bends up, but gravity counters this and so the ball seems to defy physics by going too slow to have a straight line trajectory.
Obviously he also applies a lot of initial speed, but the main thing is the rotation.

There was that brilliant moment where a team defending against Stoke were about to clear for a throw in but then decided it was better to turn around and concede a corner. Can't recall what team they were playing.
Kasey Escape that happened against Hull in the first or second season up. It may have happened against other teams too. That night Hull also moved the advertising boards closer to the touchline and had a bench player warm up in front of Delap when he was setting up a throw. The bench player was yellow carded LOL

Amazing technique. Reminds me of Martin Chivers but Chiv was a centre forward so it made no sense that he would deliver. Delap's combination of speed, distance and trajectory is like nothing else I've seen however.

I don't get why some people are sniffy about long throw-ins. I'm a "get in on the deck and pass it around" football purist, but you can't be offside from a throw, you can get height and control on it (no worrying about beating the 1st man like on a corner) and the pitches in England are often a little narrower. If you've got a player with a long throw you should use it.

The thing is. With that kind of tactics stoke stayed in the premier league for years often without getting that much in trouble to get relegated. Even once qualified for the Europa League.
