    We need a 6.2 vs 6.8 comparison. I think this would interest more guys coming from 6.2 trucks.

    • @coolftp
      @coolftp 2 місяці тому +2

      I'm not sure if 6.8 is a tribute/offer to 6.2 users, or perhaps a result of initial problems with 7.3 in the detuned version for chassis, government orders and fleets, which may have resulted in the rapid introduction of 6.8s to replace the existing special versions of 7.3. I'm not sure.

    • @Tman0517
      @Tman0517 2 місяці тому +2

      The 6.8 was because of the popularty of the 7.3l. Like he points out its the same block now in a 6.8 and 7.3. This means they only need mount points for 2 different engine blocks. Also the 6.2 was tapped out as far as power they could relably get from it hence the 18-23 6.2's have lots of stupid issuses like intake manifold failures.

      What were its problems?

    • @coolftp
      @coolftp Місяць тому +1

      @@gregparrott I heard about a small batch of engines (probably in the initial phase of production), mainly in chassis cabs for public orders, i.e. slightly reprogrammed and running a large number of hours at idle. Someone from Canada also discussed problems with the pump and what this may result in when running at idle speed, and I also heard about problems with overheating. I don't know which years this applies to. It doesn't seem like a global problem, but for a while the engine's reputation seemed to be slightly at risk.

    My work truck is a '23 7.3l cclb 3/4 ton 4wd w a service body, old truck was a '19 6.7 ps cclb 3/4 ton 2wd with the same service body. Initially i was not excited as i had gotten used to the powerstrokes get up. Argued w the bosses about it. But trims have changed to be able to stay under 10k gvwr and stay off elogs. Didnt take long driving the 7.3 gasser to enjoy it more. Fuel mileage is arguable cost wise, 6.7 ps 2wd got 15.7 avg weighing just under 10k curb, 7.3 gasser 4wd is avging 12.2. I like the 10spd tranny alot more, though its not for people who are jerky or on and off the dang pedal, tends to hunt and buck alot. We have a 21 7.3 2wd service truck that one of our guys drives and hes a pedal hopper, its miserable to ride with him as the truck lurches and lunges hunting gears and he complains, its even been into the shop for it, the entire problem is his complete on and off the pedal constantly causing violent downshifts at undesired times. Smooth on the pedal leads to smooth predictable shifts.
    All in all im much more content in the 4wd 7.3 than i was in the 6.7 ps 2wd, contrary to my initial rejection of the 7.3.
    Having drove enough things, that 7.3 is far more fitting for most than the 6.7 ps is. I live in truck country but 75% of diesels here still have chrome on the hitch ball and paint in the reciever. Imo the diesels are an absolute waste for 75% of purchasers. They just dont use them like they need them, but sure think they gotta have it, i know i did, thought a heavy service body truck needed to be a diesel. Having went to gas im totally changed. Hopefully the 6.8 gasser does well in the segment. The 7.3 is awesome.

      I use to work with a guy who would drive like you mentioned always off and on the throttle. I hated him for it lol. We would start going up a hill on the highway and the truck would down shift. Then he'd come off the gas a little and the truck would up shift. Then he'd lay into it and it would drop a couple of gears. Then he'd let off. And I'm not even talking about the 10 speed. This certain hill is about 1 mile of a slight incline. I swear that truck would shift about a dozen times within that mile. Again, it literally made me hate the guy.

    Much of what i've read and heard between these two engines is there are a few internal differences beyond the shorter stroke. Forged crank and rods to name a couple. That said, I don't think that's a big deal for anyone keeping it stock and staying within the rated capacities of the truck. I do think the less robust tranny is a far bigger concern. I'm just wondering why Ford even bothered with the 6.8 when it's only available with such a narrow bandwidth of options before you're forced to move up to the 7.3

      Every vehicle I’ve owned called for premium because they’ve been boosted or high compression. Thought I could get away with 87 on this engine until one day I had pretty significant knocking. Wasn’t my first tank running 87 so I firmly believe I got bad gas, but it was enough for me to keep it simple and fill up with premium every time. I don’t typically tow heavy but I do tow often, this way I don’t have to worry about what grade fuel I have in the tank if an impromptu desert trip comes up. All my desert toys also burn premium so it makes filling up my jugs and truck simpler. On the flip side I did gain a solid 1 mpg. I can’t say if this is attributed to fuel or merely the truck getting broken in, perhaps a bit of both but I can say it correlated with the fuel change.

They wouldn't be able to sell as many and stay within the BS federal CAFE standards and various V8 quantity restrictions that exist (that most people don't know about and are also BS and should exist). So many unnecessary regulations limit our choices and most of all cost us a HELL of a lot of extra money on the bottom line.

    Wish the 6.8L and 10R100 were the standard engine all the way up into the Lariat. Then 7.3L and 10R140 was the option. I would have ordered my 2024 Lariat with the 6.8L. Now that I have it, I do like the 7.3, but would have preferred the 6.8. I don't tow heavy. This is my overlanding pickup so have a light-weight slide-in pickup camper (1,600lb) and am about 2,500lb payload with camper, gear and people. Most I tow is 3,000lb fishing boat or 3,000lb enclosed trailer. 6.8L would have been plenty and would have gotten better mileage, even if a small amount, when driving, when idling, or when putting along in 4low for hours at a time on a trail. The 6.8L would have done everything I need and more and been more efficient while doing it. I only needed a Superduty for payload. I have no need for a 6.8L much less a 7.3L, but those are all one can get in an SD. I would have opted for the 6.8L if I could have.

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 4 місяці тому +1

      @jimmyb4956 I'll take miniscule efficiency gains as I absolutely don't need the power of the 6.8L much less the 7.3L.
      I don't tow heavy and simply need the payload for an overlanding pop-up slide-in camper. Once we are loaded with camping gear, recovery gear, two passengers, and put on receiver hitch with MTB or tongue weight of little 3,000lb trailer, we well exceed max payload of Fullsize pickups. We are 2,000 to 2,600lb payload.
      Any small V8 would do the trick for our use, especially with the 10 speed. Hence why I would have preferred to at least have had the option of choosing the 6.8L.
      Informationally, my small 4.6L V8 in my Tundra did everything I needed with camper and trailer; the chassis just didn't have the payload we needed so finally changed to an SD.

      @@MrChadx1 agree, payload is definitely the reason for the step up to a 3/4 ton truck, half tons have some perks, but don’t have the required payload. Yea, they can tow a good amount, but no payload to speak of. Heck they have unbelievable 4cylinder performance numbers these days, that would work for a good entry-level 3/4 ton truck option, especially with most days of the truck being a commuter vehicle or a grocery getter. IDK, time will tell what they do next.

      The 460 was a nice engine. Besides, I like the big blocks. However, by all specification I've seen, the 7.3 engine has more horsepower and essentially the same amount of torque. The 460 was rated at 365 hp and 485 lb.-ft, while the 7.3 is rated at 430hp and 475 (now 485 lb-ft) The displacement are also pretty similar: (460 vs. 445.5 cu. in.)

      Specifically, my 2017F-350 XLT came with incandescent headlights. Even with low beams, if the headlights are on, ALL 4 ARE ALWAYS ON.

      On the plus side for oncoming traffic, the 4 incandescents are not very bright/blinding. They're far less than LEDs or halogens. But reflexively, 4 headlights suggests hi-beams.

    I have a 2023 6.8 and the transmission SUCKS! Super clunky around 3rd and 7th gears. Probably going to take it in under warranty :( Great motor tho.

    I wish Ford would actually test equipment before they throw it out on the market. They used to be really good about that. Don’t seem like they do that anymore.

    Why doesn't Ford offer dual exhaust, cost savings I'm sure.

    No doubt about it, the 7.3 sounds better. The other one sounds like it has the hiccups.

    Wasn’t the 7.3 having lifter issues?

      I came to this video wondering about the same lifter issue. How common was it?, Has Ford found the cause? Has that issue been SOLVED?
      It troubles me that I'm not finding any updates on the issue, let alone on its resolution

    A lot of government applications require the use of E85 fuels. So it seems to me the 6.8L was designed to suit the government applications and the fleets that needed the ability to run E85 to suit their
    "green" agenda.

    These are impressive, high-displacement engines, but not big blocks in the traditional sense. The bore spacing is much closer to a small block, or perhaps a "medium block" if such a term existed. Small block Chevy = 4.40 inches. Godzilla = 4.53 inches. Big block Chevy = 4.83 inches. Big block Ford = 4.90 inches.

      Ford had three engines the third one was the Fe the fe was in everything 330 to 427 ci displacement bore spacing 4.63 close to Oldsmobile 4.627

      If I remember right, the Dodge 440 Big block had the widest bore and shortest stroke. But I don't remember what its bore spacing was. Do you know that spec.?

    No comparison, a diesel is an absolute POS!! The cost along with maintenance and fuel cost is no comparison. The gas truck is more economical in the end for the problems that diesel has especially with the Def system. Fuel mileage is not enough to make up for the problem’s diesel have.

    • @Tman0517

      You have to be working a truck daily to warrent a diesel these days. The whole "i tow a big camper" isnt really a good argument with great gas options out there. But if you have the money more power to ya.

      @@Tman0517 as a longtime shop owner I would suggest if a truck is working daily to buy a real truck with a tilt hood and better diesel not a pickup cause the amount spent and the difference in maintenance 🧑‍🔧 is not smart to buy a diesel pickup compared to a larger 2 ton real diesel preferably with air brakes. You get much more towing capacity and a lot less maintenance. Otherwise a normal pickup gas is the best option all around. It just won’t give problems

      I have a 2017 F-350 SRW with the 6.7. At 33,500 miles a check engine light came on. The error code is DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Ford said I should replace the DPF filter, with the cost being $1200. Checking online, there is a chance that a 'Manual Regen' mode (not accessible without a special tool) might (just might) enable the particulate filter to be burned clean. When I mentioned that I drive very conservatively (gentle acceleration, no flooring it), have rarely towed, and with no tow so far exceeding 5,000 lbs, I was told that my light use may actually ACCELERATE DPF issues because the engines are meant to be driven harder. VERY frustrating to be gentle with it and be penalized for doing so.

      @@gregparrott You just proved my whole point!! I been mechanic for over 40yrs, Diesels are best ever in medium /heavy duty trucks, tilt hood air brakes etc, but automotive pickups are a joke. You pay as much for them as a real commercial truck with half the towing ability . Not to mention the more expensive maintenance less powertrain life and the engine accessibility is a complete joke. Gas engine is best option for any pickup period from a mechanic point of view. If people want a diesel buy an air brake truck with tilt hood !! They will out last out perform any pickup. People have to see the real issues and cost , the long term cost difference speaks volumes, between high diesel prices and maintenance cost along with initial purchase cost difference, gas engine is more economical and less maintenance. Not to mention the more quiet ride and easy parts available. To each his own, but from a veteran mechanic, I refuse to own a diesel in a pickup period . Good luck!!

      @@Gearswapper Yes, I commented KNOWING it substantiated your view. This was the first Diesel I've ever owned. I appreciate the power and torque, and can see why people towing large travel trailers, fifth wheels, etc. willingly pay a premium. But, my anticipated towing requirements will never exceed 10 or 12 thousand pounds. That light towing, plus the realization that Diesel emissions systems are a particular sore point on pickups, has prompted me to consider switching to the 7.3 gas engine.
      When I bought the F-350 SRW new in 2017, the only gas engine was the 6.2. Comments about it were OK, but its power was lacking. Had the 7.3 existed in 2017, I would have bought it. I recently test drove a 2023 F-350 SRW with the 7.3 gas engine. It's nice. BUT, the dilemma is whether to live with the Diesel, appreciate its torque and power, but accept a substantially higher maintenance cost than I expected, or pay a fortune to get a new F-350 SRW, where the price for the same vehicle and trim package is now a solid 50% higher than in 2017.
      I respect your view as a mechanic, and advantages of a tilt hood (if only the pickup trucks could be offered with that!). But as an average driver, one who does not have a CDL, I don't think a full size commercial truck is a viable alternative for the vast majority of pickup truck owners.
      #1) The cost for a commercial driver's license, associated insurance, and periodic testing, would be substantial.
      #2) It's very likely these vehicles would have to get in line with large rigs at weigh stations and agricultural checkpoints. (A real pain in the a##)
      #3) I very much doubt that the ride quality would match that of a pickup, especially when its towed load and payload have been detached
      #4) A full size truck is gross overkill for a light weekend camping trip. carrying a dirt bike of ATV, or getting supplies from a hardware store.
      #5) A commercial truck will not fit in most people's garages, and aren't even allowed in many residential districts (including mine).
      #6) A lot of people doing off grid camping or skiing in mountainous terrain (I do both) occasionally need 4wd. That is a very pricey item in a large commercial truck.
