  • Valve Cover Leaking Oil - This is the MOST common problem i see on any Briggs & Stratton Intek engine single & twin cylinder - over time the sealer breaks down or the valve cover simply comes loose and causes oil to leak out when the engine is running thus dripping on the hot muffler and making the engine smoke - it's a simple fix and i show you how to fix it!

    Dude, stop it with the RTV. Next guy will be looking to choke you out LOL. That crap is such a mess to remove and clean up. Use a simple an cheap paper gasket. This ain't the space program fellas.

      @@jdub976 I ordered the paper gasket but then saw everyone using goop, came back to find out why. Looks like I will stick with the paper gasket unless it leaks.
      Still trying to figure out why I need to remove the valve cover to change the head gasket?

    Anyone that does this should probably check/set the valve clearance while you are in there, only takes a few minutes and will be much harder to do after glueing the valve cover on.

    do you have to use a sealant if you have a valve cover gasket? would there be issues with starting or compression?

    • @rickjames6948
      @rickjames6948 5 місяців тому

      If you tare talking about a paper gasket then NO. No RTV should be used. Briggs makes paper gaskets for these.

    I'm an idiot who screwed the right bottom screw too tight and broke it, so here's to hoping I don't have issues because of that.🍻

    Im having a terrible problem getting the valve cover off on this very engine. Tried pulling it off with pliers--gently. Looks like its ok to use a flat head screw driver. What is the product you used to create the gasket? I was told to buy one off--you guessed it--Amazon but now I think not. What was the product you used? I couldnt quite make it out. Thanks so much for the very helpful video!

      flat head screwdriver will work fine, i use black RTV sealer, either Permatex or the brand Harbor Freight uses (it's better than Permatex in my opinion)

      HA-HA-HA, THIS is why you DO NOT USE RTV here or at all guys. Paper gaskets are cheap and easy to remove. With RTV, you will bend the valve cover removing it. You need a heat gun to soften the RTV.

      @@rickjames6948 Agreed. Someone gooed them on the motor I was working on tonight. Tomorrow is an hour of scrapping then putting in new gaskets. Valves should be adjusted once a year. Who wants to do that every year?

    Thanks, I was actually hoping to get the torque specs, but it's not the head gasket.
    I actually bought the gasket odd Amazon for $8, I have seen a pick up tube clogged from to much rtv, but if it works it works

    • @TheOutdoorPowerGuy
      @TheOutdoorPowerGuy  2 роки тому

      Always use OEM parts from the engine manufacturer when it comes to internal parts, those cheap head gaskets off Amazon won't hold up, the OEM gasket costs more but for better piece of mind stick with OEM. Torque specs are irrelevant for the valve cover, for the head it depends on your model number, some are 180 in lbs others 220 in lbs.

    • @randytravis3998

      60 inch lbs on the rocker cover ,, NOT FOOT LBS .. and yes too much RTV is bad ,,scotch bright pad and or steel wool or a brass wire brush ,,try too keep old RTV from going down the area where the push rods go ,, if you have a oil pump it could plug your pickup screen then you would have to pull the sump off / split the engine .. factor update class for briggs said use a plastic putty knife or plastic butter knife too clean the old rtv .. if you use power tools to clean the rtv it could get a low spot and you will never stop a oil leak ,, hope this helps .. also when you do head bolts do in 3 steps follow the specifications on what order to torque the bolts but do in 3 steps start torque low 1st time and by the 3rd time you go with the torque the engine calls for ..

    • @NoName-ml5yk
      @NoName-ml5yk 2 роки тому +2

      Not a good idea to get torque specs off UA-cam. People make mistakes. Better to download the manual and look it up yourself. I wouldn't use a generic gasket either.

    Fired up my Intek and the muffler is putting down a nice smoke screen. Lol. Great to know it's most likely the valve cover gasket. Won't know until I get her cleaned off. Is there anywhere else they commonly seep from?

    • @TheOutdoorPowerGuy
      @TheOutdoorPowerGuy  Рік тому

      No, you don't have to drain the engine oil, however most of these engines are pressure-lubricated so there will be some oil in the valve area and the valve cover.

    I thought a very thin bead of rtv in the center of sealing surface is way to go ! I know the new HD Engine gaskets have a tiny bead impregnated on them .I also find they leak sometimes so ,?, so don't know bout that . You smear the rtv on there like I used to do in old days . More is better guy here ! Then I hear about rtv clogging up oil pump ports etc ! I have reused valve cover leaving rtv on there and had good luck not leaking , I was adjusting valves and was impatient .

    • @randytravis3998
      @randytravis3998 2 роки тому

      thin layer is better yes too much will stop the oil flow and you would have to split the engine to clean the oil pump screen .. if your engine has a oil filter .. if no filter it will be a splash oil system ..

    • @NoName-ml5yk

      Thin is going to mean different things to different people.
      Ultra Black DIRECTIONS: 1. For best results, clean and dry all surfaces with a residue-free solvent, such as Permatex® Brake & Parts Cleaner. 2.°Cut nozzle to desired bead - gaskets are best formed using a 1/16″ to 1/4″ bead. 3.Apply a continuous and even bead of silicone to one surface, surrounding all bolt holes. Remove excess with knife at once. Assemble parts immediately. Do not squeeze out silicone by overtightening bolts. Re-torque will not be necessary. 4.Silicone dries in 1 hour, and fully cures in 24 hours, at 70°F - 50% relative humidity. Allow more time in cold weather. 5.Replace cap after use. Clean hands with dry cloth or Permatex Fast Orange Hand Cleaner. Clean tools with non-flammable cleaning fluid. NOTE: Not recommended for use on head gaskets or parts in contact with gasoline.
