Thanks for watching! For those of you wondering about the Roof Palomino (Lawn Mower Jeep), Taryl is currently working on it and there will be part 2 and more coming soon. These projects take time and we only have so much time in a day/week/month so bear with us! More to come, Stay Tuned...
Can't wait 👍
I also do small engine repair for a living and thought I'd share a tip. I purchased this tool from Harbor freight and it makes removing the carb main jet and emulsion tube from Honda/Chinese engines much easier. It's such a low profile tool that you can easily get to the jet/tube without removing the entire carb. I use the skinny flathead bit that it comes with, it seems to work better than other bits. On a lot of these Honda engines and Chinese snowblowers, there isn't enough room to remove the main jet and tube without removing the carburetor, this tool easily fits in almost all tight spaces and allows you to remove these for a much faster repair. I use a 90 degree pick to push the emulsion tube out. I doubt you'll see this comment but I thought I'd share this tip that has saved me a ton of time.

Hey Mr. Taryl! I just ordered me some stuff.... that fancy grass scraper tool and a signed photo! Thanks for the great vids! Have a great Christmas 🍺🇺🇸👍
Taryl question for ya, what would make a 23 hp Kohler freeze up at the top of the crankshaft under the top seal, I mean just lock up!
Thank you for this video! I’m a 65 year old tiny lady and I was able to repair my riding lawnmower following your video!!
Thanks for posting this tip. I used this method on my Kohler valve cover even though it was a different model. I tried to repair my oil leak just like the Kohler TSM stated twice unsuccessfully. According to the TSM, my Kohler command uses RTV only (no gasket) to seal valve cover. I tried 1/8 bead first, no luck. Tried a 1/4 bead second time, no luck. Then went searching on UA-cam. After viewing this video, I went to NAPA, purchased a FelPRo sheet of gasket material (1/8 inch). Made me a gasket and used your repair method. NO LEAKS. THANKS!
Taryl and Co: Love your videos. This one in particular really was a huge help. I’m not handy, but you have educated me enough to do certain repairs on my mower.
Thank you! Thanks for the laughs and learning. Long live Taryl, Junior, Slippers and Ronnie!
I did this method to fix the oil leaking on my exhaust and smoking issue. Since I did this, it no longer leaks or smokes. Thanks Taryl!
Taryl, I thought I was watching myself all over again. I do the same thing with one exception. I use a high tac brush on sealer on the engine side also. No leaks. I watch you videos daily. Good work. Rick from Easley SC.
Taryl and the gang: Thanks for this video. Using the secrets contained within I was able to repair my 2011 MTD Gold, complete with a Cruller 19 HP Discourage engine. Now I don't look like a Sopwith Camel that's been freshly shot down in WWI. With a fresh valve cover gasket the mower is smoke-free. Don't judge me: The mower came with the property when I bought the house 8 years ago. With your help I have been babying the POS for all these years! Per your latest video, when I went to buy a new blade brake shoe/bracket, which should cost about $6, I was very surprised to see it listed for $63 from MTD. Wow. I will fabricate!
Got my Taryl apparel the other day here in UK, the CD's brilliant and thanks for the freebies!! Great video again as usual boys.
Taryl I just got a Cub that needed this done to it I did it the way you showed me and it worked thank you for being so helpful with all my mower needs
That was an absolute classic video grass rats... thank you all for your service and what you do to keep us entertained...👍👍👍🤣😂😀
I have to say this is the best one I've ever watched. We had an old 2006 Craftsman Ys 4500 red model that leaked. Don't have that one anymore but we do have a I'm not sure of the year Troy-Bilt bronco. It's leaking and smoking and burning oil. Thanks for sharing!
You guys never fail to deliver. Thanks! Hope the kitties are well!
Lol thanks for the lesson on the "Kroller"valve gasket change....just what I needed
The recommendations and directions in this video were spot on...thank you!
Another great video, Taryl! Sadly, I have about 15 Krohler Courages on the lot - they either have that big crack at the front right side of the block, they're knocking and vibrating and they're about to blow, or they've blown up and the block is completely ventilated. But it's a great tip for anybody who's Courage hasn't bit it yet!
I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly! Thanks dude!
*Taryl- and anyone else:*
The actual "defect" that causes this leak- is that the cover itself is incorrectly made.
The recessed gasket area is too deep, and the edge of the cover pushes against the engine before the gasket can properly seal.
To remedy this:
Using either a belt sander or Taryl's sandpaper on table trick he uses to resurface heads- carefully remove some of the edge of the valve cover, about 1 - 1.5mm should be enough.
Make sure the new surface is flat, and the cover isn't warped; see if you can slide a feeler gauge underneath it when on a flat surface.
Today is 31 January 2023. I just found out from your channel yesterday about the list of Kohler Courage problems which could be affecting my mower...which I've been using since 2007. The cover plate bolts weren't loose (the the two in front did move when I put the muscle on them), but the valve cover gasket had been leaking. A lot. I'm gonna put this fix on it. Thanks!
Awesome. Thanks Taryl. I love watching you every Sunday
How many cases of Hamms does it take to write the script? Your crew is fantastic. :)
Ah, my favorite Grassrats guitar riff at about 8:15 - only heard it once before on your vids, but love it.
Another great video by the Grass Rats, keep up the great work. even with the fun videos, we can all learn a lot.
I really enjoy your skits/how to videos Taryl and Crew! You guys are very entertaining! Thanks for the laughs and for the education! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
the right stuff work very well i use it on my differential cover on my Dakota 4x4 no leak at all and it cure very fast! another awesome video from Taryl the master!!:)
Just aquired a scrub cadet for free today because it is leaking from the valve cover and it wouldn't turn over. One of the rocker arm studs worked it's way loose and it set the valve lash so far out that the compression release wasn't working. Tighten it up and set the valves in it and it fired up and ran like a burning barn. Tons of smoke. Guess when it cools down I will be giving this a go.
Thanks for the great info taryl fixes all.
I cannot thank y’all enough for this how to video
Great information for countless gasket applications!
Love your videos they brilliant and so much information in them. Have a great Christmas and a happy new year. Best wishes from the UK. Keep up the good work.
Good Stuff gasket maker, been using it for years works very good never let me down! Great video Guys 👍
Hahaaaaa!!!! Omg that was great! I love you guys! Thank you for all the fun videos!
The right stuff works great and also can replace the engine cover lid .
Love it 😍
Gasket 😊
x car tech here now getting into lawn mowers and rotovaters etc and your vids are great for pro's as well due to getting to know the common faults etc so thank you.... by the way them oil pressure switches are a common fault on cars to , is the heating and cooling also can leak down center and out the terminal .
I love these videos! I can learn the info I need and laugh at the same time!
Thank for the tip it works did it to my Kohler 18 sv540s . No more leaks
Another great episode, keep it up guys with the great vids!
Very informative video as always Trayl! Good job!
Great video as usual
Poor ole Ronnie! He just can't catch a break, Ha, another great video guys! thanks for posting
Method worked great. Had to tighten the valve cover bolts again after engine heated up.
You might be on to something with the two metal pieces getting sealed with the RTV, and cork gasket mates with engine fine, now easy to adjust valves too! Good Tip
Thanks man! Been looking for a fix for this.
Thanks for this. I have a Krowler in the shop for the second time because of the same leak. I never want to see it again! I also replaced the crankcase gasket before but that seems to be in good shape - although I will still check those bolts. (I did use loctite)
Came in from the garage to get beer, hot dam,got a video to. Days looking better. When I'm done using right stuff I put a drywall screw in the nozzle, helps pulling that plug out next time ya use it.
i just found your videos a few vids ago and i love them
Awesome tip Taryl. Wish the video was longer. You guys are better entertainment than anything on tv! 👍🏻
Hilarious! Haha I am still laughing thinking about it! Loved the fix too.
The guy who plays Slippers and Ronnie is the best! Too funny!
My repair using your original method is still holding up well! But this is a good idea for adjusting the rockers
Awesome as always Taryl!!! When is the second video on the old red cart mower? Thanks bud
Thanks guys , made my day :D
Awesome video worked on my Troy- bilt xp horse
That's what I said,carbatrater . LOL
Used some Taryl putty in the garage today on a project bike. Good stuff.
This vid was very helpful. Thanks! BTW, I know a good dentist if y'all need one.
Great video thanks
I love this! This is great!
Hi Taryl I have a 18 hp kohler courage it’s be starting ok but today it turned over slow not enough to start I also noticed the starter getting real hot haven’t checked battery bolts going to check it wondering if it could be the valves need adjusted
This is why I love being subscribed to Taryl. Because of his intro skits
Lol. Love seeing Ronnie go flying. Thx
love that stuff, great on scrambled eggs too
Ha! I didn't know that you followed taryl. I have both of you on my subcribed list. Learned a lot from both of you
So this was our revised Dinner. Lol 🤘🏼
Taryl, at the lawn-mower convention a guy was selling tubes of the Wrong-Stuff-Sealant out of the trunk of his car for a $1.00. it did not work, i think it was toothpaste? haha :) great video.
I fixed 2 Courrage engines with your gasket hack but went one step further by putting a heat shield between the valve cover and the muffler My repair is going two years with absolutely no leaks at all My opinion is I think the muffler is cooking the lower gasket area
Merry Christmas And Happy New Year .
Just got a new gasket it looks like it will seal good without silicone do I have to use silicon or rtv
Love your channel. I'd add one more thing to your general repair of all equipment.
Before you put all the covers and crap back in place, start it and let it run...……..then while running, power wash the snot out of it. that will tell you where not to put water as you'll see and hear the motor slow down. clean everything, everywhere. then put all the covers back. then let it run for a few weeks. then take the covers back off when you are bored and have 6 beers to kill.....then look for new oil stains...if none...drink more beer in celebration...if you find some, fix that, while drinking more beer. rewash and repeat until no new oil or fluid leaks.
Keep it up Taryl I love your videos
I got the same engine. It back fired when running cut it off and now want start. What could it be. Plz help
hey boss gotta issue with a LT1042 Cub. ran fine bit of a slow start, got off of it for bout 30 min now wont start, fly wheel just spins with no sputter, replaced batt. and spark plug. tried to jump the solenoid but got the same result.
While I have the cover off. I'm going to check and set ( if needed the valve clearance. What do I set them at.) I have an 18hp courage
I have a cub cadet v twin built in 2016 so it has 2 and want to make sure to do it right .I changed the one on the troy built with success .I see soot around the 2 on the cub cadet and know that they need changed
The Right Stuff is awesome used on many gaskets never had a leak.
I flattened out the bolt holes using a bench vice and a socket on that cover and resealed it with gasket silicone. Alot of running time later and still no leaks. You need to flatten out the bolt holes due to people cranking the bolts up to tight because it starts leaking and then the extra pressure cause the bolt part of the tapper cover to sink into the cork gasket and form an indent making it impossible to get a good seal.
I just fixed my kohler courage valve cover using permatex high heat. I stripped 2 bolts. So I went up to 7mm bolts from 6mm. They will thread them selves. They will be hard going in but it works. Then put 7mm nuts on the back. Torqued to 75 inch pounds. I will let it sit till tomorrow afternoon. Wish me luck.
Great video love it
Taryl can I swap my Kohler 17hp. out with a 22hp. Kohler and do you have to swap belts as well.
I watch your repair shop just about all the time you really help me out on a lot of my lawnmower repair's.
Hope to hear from you about the engine swap.
George Heard
"The right stuff" every time I do a gasket on a kroler I say that out loud in your little voice like 10 times 😂
After building a few chevy engines I just use the high temp RTV with no gasket, especially the cork ones that will split around the bolts if put on too tight. The key is a very clean surface, put the goop on and bolt it right on with no waiting around unless the RTV calls for it. Let it cure over night and never had a leak. Don't smear it all over with your finger and it will be easier to take off and clean up again next time.
Do you have any problems with the gasket sticking to the engine when you later remove the valve cover?
Great video
On the inner piece of the valve cover there is o hole. There was a little plastic tab that sat over that hole that snapped off when I was pulling the cover off the head. What is that hole for and does it need to have that little plastic piece over the top of it ?
Worked like an charm had no more leaks.
Should you use 'the right stuff' only on the valve pan side of the gasket?
Great POKE at the UA-cam police. You guys are GReAT!
Just what to say Marry Christmas to you and your family, I love your videos keep them coming. 🎅🎅🤶🏻🤶🏻🌲🌲🥂🥂🍺🍺
I will have to try this, everything I have tried has failed, Thanks for the tip.
Taryl, I’m working on an old bucket engine. Model # sv590-0016. I can’t find a carburtrater rebuild kit. I’ve searched kohler, and parts direct. It’s been labeled obsolete. I need a complete rebuild kit. I know it’s a pof. But would like to get it running to flip. Also need the valve cover gasket, but think I can source one of those. Another option is a Chinesium carburetrator. I can get one of those for about $25. What do you recommend?
HAHA!!!!.Top notch video Tayrl/Jr./Ronnie,I like the way this video ended with a blooper on the very end.
The very best way to fix a Krohler DISCOURAGE,is just DON'T buy one in the first place,I'm not sure what happened to Krohler, but every since they started cranking out their magnum V-twins,they have been nothing but problems,I bought a brand new Cub-Cadet model 2185 back in 1994 and it had the Krohler magnum 18hp.V-twin in it,that was the biggest mistake of my life, never again.
Love you guys
Can’t wait to fix this mower I just picked up for $50 lol easy fixes.
@TarylFixesAll what is the purpose of that little sponge inside the valve head cover? Do you think there would be an issue if that was taken out?
Was working on a customers snow blower the other day, and I called the muffler.... A muffkin..... He laughed and said ah you watch Taryl too huh..... I said yep get channel.
lol
Love it you guys great.
Mechanic for 40 yrs, I’ve used the right stuff to glue down curled up car dashboards, body moldings, valve covers on cars( sometimes without the gaskets) etc...the right stuff is the right stuff.
taryl-thank you, i just fixed my leaking valve cover using your method. my top bolts were also loose just as you said they might be. my only issue is that my exhaust manifold bolts keep backing out and i ordered the wrong ones from partstree. i have a 2009 cub cadet that has the internal t45 boltheads. i've seen straight studs where i'm assuming you double nut them to keep them on. if you know the cub cadet part #, i'd appreciate it if you could respond. btw...your channel is outstanding...hilarious, too...
Did it still leak? I did this method and it still leaked. It barely leaks a drop of oil after setting all night.
Still lovin the vids guys! just wondering though, any more work done on the 69 roof palomino?
Tried my hand at replacing but just using hi temp gasket maker. Cleaned the metal, laid it in thick. Nope, leaking again.
I need JUST that bracket that they include with the gasket, cover kit, That applies even pressure to that bottom lip.
That OR I’m
Considering drilling a hole through the cover and back case to put a second bolt through the bottom for
Even pressure
What do you think?
Thanks taryl I will be buying some items.
Thanks I learned something
the gasket on the engine side .. goes on dry ?? i always thought you had to put oil on a dry gasket //tnx Ken
